Microsoft Patent Shows A Dual-Mode Xbox 360 Controller

A Microsoft patent shows off a new dual-mode Xbox 360 controller that can be used both wired and wirelessly. Unlike the current play and charge kit, this controller would give you the accuracy of a true wired mode when plugged in.

That is nice. Doesnt the DS3 controller have better accuracy when plugged in already? I am not too sure.

Fishy Fingers5045d ago

I dont think so, from what I've read in the past, both 360 and dual shock have basically zero difference response times between wired and wireless.

Although, multiple gamers on one system using wireless can slow down response times (say 4 player split screen), but again, it's very minimal.

@FISHY FINGERS thanks

@disagree How could I get disagrees for asking a question? and saying what M$ is doing is good?

PirosThe4th5045d ago

That issue u are mentioning doesn't occur while using bluetooth it's only the old radio wave technology that M$ uses... That is why ps3 can have up to 7 controllers while xbox only gets 4.

SeanRL5045d ago

lol, retarded stealth trolls disagreed with your question? That's pretty pathetic.

Spenok5045d ago

Thats what i thought. Thanks for clarification.

@lolking not too sure about the disagrees but people might have been trying to answer your question without an actual reply, with the disagrees meaning (the ds3 does not have improved accuracy) but who knows

tunaks15045d ago

isnt that the original xbox?

3dawg5045d ago

i wouldn't click on it my self but the picture they're showing is the original xbox. trying to get easy hits by putting an interesting title. lol besides i do that with my controller anyway because i don't want to buy batteries. its wireless but i have it plugged in. i know what they mean but i don't think it would make any difference quite honestly

Fishy Fingers5045d ago

It is the original xbox and also original pad (post S controller), but the patient is recent.

Good, I'm opposed to anything wireless with gaming because it's a bad idea due to the lag.

Xeoset5045d ago (Edited 5045d ago )

WiFi lags. Connections drop. Interference gets in the way. This is factual.

Wired > Wireless in terms of performance.

EDIT: I read your statement correctly, just wondering why tools were disagreeing with you.

The USB cables only supply power. Both the 360 and PS3 controllers still communicate wirelessly when plugged in, to my recollection.

Remember console OSes are meant to be as simple as possible, to save memory. They do things ONE way, and avoid having lots of extra paths for doing things, when the one supported way works just fine. Supporting USB communication for 360 controllers would just be more code and interface support that just isn't needed when you're trying to fit your entire OS in 32MB, to make as much room for games as possible.

kneon5045d ago

I don't know about the Xbox but the PS3 already supports all kinds of wired controllers so the code is already there anyway. I assume the old Xbox wired controllers work on a 360 don't they?

I expect the limitation is in the controller itself, they were probably designed to only communicate wirelessly.

writersblock5045d ago

I have a wired PS3 controller (lot cheaper) I got from gamestop, so it can use wired controls and likely does when charging

I couldnt buy one for the xbox though, he said they dont make them. So I guess it doesnt have that

"The USB cables only supply power. Both the 360 and PS3 controllers still communicate wirelessly when plugged in, to my recollection."

I don't think that is entirely true at least for the PS3 case. I think the USB actually provides proper connection between the controller and the PS3 even with the SIXAXIS and DS3. I once forgot to plug-in my BT & WiFi adapter in my fat PS3 after I fixed the YLoD the 1st time. the console turned ON ok but the WiFi didn't work and my DS3 won't work either unless connected with USB. that where I noticed maybe I forgot to reconnect something back when I put my PS3 back together. so I opened my PS3 again and reconnect the BT and WiFi adapter and zing! everything went back to normal. but the thing was, although just connected with USB, my DS3 worked like it should and all motion sensing control was possible. that's a solid proof that the USB provides more than just power to the DS3.

the other great example is the capability of the PS3 to recognize any USB controller to be used with it. I only have 4 controllers and sometimes I play FIFA with 5 others. So I simply use 2 USB controllers I use for my PC on my PS3 and it works like charm.

This will likely be a way for them to rid of the battery styled controllers and have a batter incorporated and be able to charge it as well,

Xbox is making strides I think to cover up how cheap their system comes off sometimes, new look, controller with out batteries, they were able to sell crap for a while and at the expense of them R&D refinements for their products, seems simple enough
