For the four weeks ending May 29, 2010 NPD says $823.5 million was spent on video games in the United States. That is drop from May 2009 when $863.3 million was spent on video games. The major culprit for the decline was hardware - which is selling at lower prices and lower rates than in 2009.

Wow, they released the NPD numbers? Correct me if I am wrong but aren't they supposed to do this every second thursday of each month?
M$ has seriously locked up the U.S region with HD consoles. Outside America, it seems PS3 is doing extremely well. Lets see how June figures turn out to be. I am guessing M$ will have a big margin over PS3 because of the Xbox 360 S but they need to do something good outside America too because they are almost dead in Japan and Europe loves PS3 as well.

Short answer... they don't. They make their numbers up. It's impossible to know the numbers from Europe and Rest of the World (beside USA and Japan).
