Why Does Rockstar Keep Doing This?

Upon release of GTA IV, the Rockstar writing crew received an excessive amount of praise for the creation of Niko Bellic. Two years later, many people have realized that there was a huge disconnect between the game play and the character of Niko. How can this man, who wants to have a different life in America, kill hundreds of cops and even some men that he has called his friends? Subsequent releases of The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony did little to correct the problem.

In a way I agree, that bank robbery mission in GTA4 along with a few others basically forced you to kill more than a few cops in order to complete them. It wouldn't be such a big "disconnect" if Niko was like one of the main characters from Kane and Lynch, but he was a character that showed emotions. Still, Rockstar has no control over what the player does aside from the missions, so in my opinion, it's all acceptable.

Redempteur5053d ago

There is no problem at all these character simply get into a spiral of problems and it's very hard to escape from it .

As for the bank mission , it's a epic mission with a lot of action and it's one of the best ones in GTA4 ( blowing stuff , escaping ... ) So kills cops ? and then ?it's a damn game.. Also by the time , kino realised that there was no american dream for him . ( back stabbed twice , lied by at least 3 people )

Dee_915053d ago

i didnt know so many people get caught up in the life of these video game characters

Bereaver5053d ago

Actually, I think the whole point of Neko is that he has this amazing ability to change himself to please so many people.

gtamike5052d ago

Just make a GTA as good as San Andreas thats all I want

sofocado5052d ago

They did already. It actually was better than San Andreas.

gtamike5052d ago

Not downgrade with new graphics and physics engine (GTA4)

N4g_null5052d ago

What is funny is you the player can choose not to play the game thus having the main character not go thur these horrors.

Maybe rock star should go even further and make an Althernate mission where the character gives up and works as a toll booth worker and get evicted from his apartment.

I did find it strange that John Marston was willing to kill thousands of frontiersmen, rebels, and government officials to protect his family. Now THAT'S sociopathic behavior...

Incognegro5053d ago

lol so I take it you won't go to great lengths to save the ones you love then. I can understand the author's beef with the game, but I think Rockstar did a better job of presenting John's character than they have with previous tries.

In Mexico, he gets questioned a couple of times with siding with De Santa and John even goes on to mention that he doesn't even care about the outcome of the ware, and that his only concern is to save his family. Another aspect was that he wasn't always quick to kill people either. He would only do so if he really needed to. Well, that's my take on it at least.

Silver3605053d ago

Those people he killed were between him and his family. John only has his family. His mother was a whore that died early his father a drunk that died on him early to. Dutch his father figure left him shot up and dying. He had no one but his wife a former whore and his son. The man is has no human connections outside of those two, so of course the rest of humanity are either there to assist him or obstacles in his way.

Darkstorn5053d ago

That does not change the fact that John Marston's behavior is beyond sociopathic.

seinfan5053d ago

Sociopaths don't care for anyone. Why would he care for his family?

masterg5053d ago

Do you know what a sociopath is Darkstorn?

HolyOrangeCows5053d ago

Better question: Why don't journalists ever catch these disconnects in Rockstar games?

Because Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear, etc...they all get away with murder with these giddy journalists.

maddhatter1235053d ago (Edited 5053d ago )

with halo and gta you have a point but you can beat mgs4 without killing anyone even the bosses.

KaBaW5053d ago

How do you 'not' kill the bosses?

Sean Ryno5052d ago

Where in Halo do you have to kill another person? Beyond that, there are very very few situations where you HAVE to kill anything. You can get it done being all Swiss. With the exception of:
-A Scarab Halo3
-Tartersauce Halo2
-The monitor Halo3

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies5d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken5d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing696d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker6d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing696d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt5d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken5d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

fan_of_gaming19d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long19d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

fan_of_gaming19d ago

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple10119d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor19d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing6919d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming19d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno19d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming19d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

Rockstar still strying to make GTA plus work
Should be $6 for the rdr game on sale not 6 bucks for a months playtime

Exvalos34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

I hear ya, 49.99 or whatever the price on that game is, is a bit stiff seeing as it's just a port.

anast34d ago

Why would anyone rent this game?

jznrpg33d ago

One of my favorite games from PS3 generation. I have the remaster as there was a buy 2 get 1 free deal a while back but the price they are charging for the port is way too high although not surprising at all.
