The 3DS will be the end of the PSP

Whether Sony chooses to announce their next-generation handheld or not, the 3DS will guarantee one thing: the end of the PSP. Whether this hypothetical death comes quickly or slowly, it all depends on how aggressive Nintendo markets their newest handheld and if they can continue to convince publishers to put more attention towards it...

I don´t get why people don't understand that the 3DS is meant to be a next-gen handheld. So please wait until PSP2 launches, until they start making comparisons.

NExaminer5071d ago

The reason why comparisons are made is because they'll both be out at the same time. The PSP 2 may do just fine, but if Sony stays with the PSP when Nintendo releases it's 3DS, they are going to lose sales which is why the article discusses it.

Games4M - Rob5071d ago

so is the xbox 360 the end of the PS2 ?

NExaminer5071d ago

@Games4M - Rob: The xbox 360 and ps2 are honestly fairly simliar features. Their main selling points were games and graphics . The 3DS offers a lot of gameplay features that the PSP does not have which means its a very large step up; not just another handheld with better graphics.

Snakefist305071d ago (Edited 5071d ago )

I dont think so cause I no sony wont give up so easily look at ps3 at 2007 they say same thing the end of ps3 but sony never give up ended up with ps3 slim and had boasted the sales..Maybe psp gonna be a same thing.Sony never gonna give on handheld so easily so they need the PSP2 in order to beat 3DS.But it had to be cheap!!!!

Trroy5071d ago (Edited 5071d ago )

@ Nexaminer

On the contrary, the 3DS is on par with the PSP, as far as graphics go, if its rendering 3D.

If its cost is well above that of the DSi (which I would wager it will be), I don't see how its any more competition for the PSP than the DSi. The entire DS line is founded on being durable, relatively inexpensive tech for kids to use. The 3DS, to some extent, may break that mold, which may, or may not, be a good thing.

With the PSP and 3DS being so close, with regards to performance, we may very well see an influx of PSP/3DS cross-plat titles, since developing for the 3DS alone would not provide 3rd parties with enough potential buyers to make a serious risk worthwhile, for the first year or so. Heck the 3DS even has the ONE analog nub of the PSP -- virtually identical controls.

The PSP is far from "dead". The simple fact that the 3DS is basically growing the potential consumer base for software products in the PSP's power range will inspire 3rd parties to make even more games for the PSP (and 3DS) than they do already.

PSP = 3DS without 3D screen, and much cheaper. Your argument that people will abandon the PSP for a more expensive version with some additional features sounds like an argument for buying the PSP Go over the PSP-3000. Don't underestimate the power of "cheaper", or of a userbase already 60 million strong.

paladin_veltron5071d ago

am i the only one who thinks psp is amazing? its got the adult games i want, remote play which i also use with my ps eye, i can see whats going on in my living room from anywhere. all i got to say is that if sony releases a psp phone with two mini joysticks and all the games they have now its over for iphone and the ds. who wouldnt want the awesome games the psp has plus the cool features like remoteplay in a psp phone. fuck the 3ds i hate all the games for the ds, im using the word hate here, the most boring kiddie games are on the ds. psp phone, im telling you that would blow away any competition.

HolyOrangeCows5071d ago

The PSP will most certainly be cheaper. Don't doubt the power of that, either. Handhelds tend to be parental purchases, which tend to be highly influenced by price.

badz1495071d ago

people says PSP don't sell because it often only gives console games on handheld. rather play the superior console version over handheld, and there's no point buying one. people said the DS sells because it offers unique games not found on any other platforms. but, now the 3DS is upon release, the spec is revealed and proven to be quite powerful, the games being announced for it so far are the so called "console games" in 3D, and people expect it to sell just like the original DSs? why will the DS audiences convert to this 3DS? IMO if they really like these console type games, they would have already bought the PSP over DS from the beginning! did I miss something here? am I the only 1 thinking that Nintendo is actually trying to be more like the PSP with the 3DS and then some?

I agree Colonel also I hope it does mean an end for the original PSP. I have been waiting patiently for some time now for a new PSP to release.

cygnuszero5071d ago

I dont know, last time I checked it not only looked like a DS, but has DS in the name too, and also has DS functionality! It's a DS, with a 3D screen.

jjesso19935071d ago

As far i no 3ds is still codename and also has new carts 2gb in size. this deffentley not a ds with 3d screen the graphics according to the previews says it tops psp by miles. Nintendo are top dog with handhelds nothing change that.

NExaminer5071d ago

It's a next generation handheld with better graphics and a lot more features in comparison to the DS. Also, the image we have is the E3 model, not the official look it will have at release. It will likely look a lot more unique by release day.

Myze5071d ago

@jjesso1993

Haven't read anywhere that the 3DS tops the PSP graphics "by miles." Sure, it's a little better, being roughly equivalent to a Gamecube, but with 3D. Although, honestly, if it wasn't better graphically than the PSP, that would be almost pathetic, since it will have been out for almost 7 years when the 3DS is released.

Anyway, I'm slightly interested in the 3DS at the moment, but can't say I'm a big fan of handhelds in general, and not the type of person to sit and play a handheld when at home. I enjoy a lot of the current DS games, and that may lead to a 3DS purchase, if the right games are released for it. However, right now, the PSP is getting better games than the DS, and that's more important to me than anything else in making a decision. Hopefully a PSP2 is announced soon, so the competition between the two stays strong.

Spenok5071d ago

Seriously. And at NExaminer, dude just as Games4M - Rob said, thats like comparing 360 to PS2 since the PS3 wasnt out yet.

raztad5071d ago (Edited 5071d ago )

@paladin

You are not alone.

I love my PSP-2000 GoW edition. It has a fair share of mature games, playing PW as of now, while waiting for Persona 3 and some other big hitters.

Honestly I dont think the PSP could do worse in terms of sales western-side, with 3DS or not. The DS as is right now outsells the PSP by a wide margin, still there are some good games incoming to the platform that make me happy to own one.

What Sony needs is to implement Trophy support, diminish piracy somehow and make sure the stream of good games dont stop.

EDIT: I forgot to add that price is key. If sony manage to sell the PSP as a cheap alternative to the "costly" 3DS, it will secure a portion of the market.

pain777pas5071d ago

Look they got my money but there are games on the PSP to play like 3rd Birthday and Peace Walker plus GOW:GOS is coming out too. PSP is on the ropes for sure once 3DS is released but with Nintendo showing its hand Sony can do something different for their next system to counter both the 3DS and Iphone.

RageAgainstTheMShine5071d ago (Edited 5071d ago )

Japanese gamers beg to differ and wont give up on the PSP.
The PSP will be there when the DS hype cools down.
Plus look at the games coming to the PSP in America. They are incredible.
Like the PS3 and Wii have different markets so does the PSP and DS.

Let's wait and see when 3DS and PSP2 bring out all the guns to determine the outcome.

Aphe5071d ago (Edited 5071d ago )

To be fair, we already know the outcome.

Evidence A - The DS

gamerz5071d ago

What's really going to chap Sony's hide is when the 3DS makes a killing on most of the existing PSP library.

Active Reload5071d ago

What, ports? You may be right...

CharlesDCI5071d ago

If the PSP2 doubles as a phone like its rumored too, I'm sorry but the 3DS will not end it at all.

gamerz5071d ago

Haven't heard those rumors but yeah, it would certainly be interesting - like the iPhone and iPod touch. I always thought the nGage was a good idea but horribly executed.

BeaArthur5071d ago

PSP2 will have to up its game if they want it to compete.

iceman065071d ago

They could be happy with their portion of the handheld pie. Nobody...not even the mighty (at the time) Sega was able to bite into the handheld pie like the PSP. 60 million sold and counting is no slouch. No, it's not DS numbers. But, this is still the first generation for Sony in the handheld realm. My bet is that they don't try to compete on the same grounds. Sony will probably continue their more adult slant on the handheld. Not saying that the DS is for kids. But, if you look at the initial marketing from Nintendo...it was aimed that way. Then, once the Brain Age phenomenon happened. They realized that they were missing out on potential customers. I would like to see a better integration of multimedia functions, another analog stick, a touch screen (not for gimmick games but for functionality), better battery life, and support...and I'm all in for the PSP2!

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno14d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers23d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken22d ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

phoenixwing23d ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H923d ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola23d ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn66923d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle23d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.
