Opinion: The Culture Scapegoat: The Real Reason Ad-Hoc Doesn't Work in the West

Gamasutra: "Do Western gamers despise the very sight of one another? This a question that has been raised, with less hyperbole, by journalists and gaming executives trying to understand why ad-hoc play is so unappealing in the West.

Local, wireless, on-the-go multiplayer made Monster Hunter's PSP versions into multi-million sellers in Japan, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for PSP's similar gameplay comes with the hope of capitalizing on that success. And considering how poorly the PSP versions of Monster Hunter have done in the West, there's a questions of whether Peace Walker will suffer the same fate."

i've never used the ad hoc function on my psp and the only time I use download play on the DS is when my girlfriend wants to play tetris.

There are rarely people around who play the psp in the states like they do in the east. You go anywhere in asia and you'll see people walking around with psp's in their hands. Trains, burger king, mcdonalds, starbucks. Most kids after school go and hangout at cafe's or restaurants, most study or just hang out with friends. You don't really see that in the states.

The Out of Place Artifact - A Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Retrospective

VGChartz's Issa Maki: "Even to fans, the thought that a T-rated game could rank as the greatest is virtually unthinkable; how could the best Metal Gear possibly be a handheld title on a system less powerful than a PlayStation 2? Because it had to be – necessity is the mother of invention. Not only is this a full-fledged Metal Gear, the fresh spin on the gameplay draws from several sources outside of its wheelhouse. Peace Walker somehow manages to be less like its predecessor, Portable Ops, and more akin to Metal Gear Solid V. What boggles the mind is that it would be over five years before The Phantom Pain would release, an entire generation later."
