"Also- I've played 2 very hyped demos in the last 2-3 weeks with graphics that are- to be frank- pretty damn bad. We are miles ahead of those and yet I hear no one bitching about that aspect of those games. Which is ok. I don't mind. But it does make me wonder..."

Hmmmmm, I wonder what games he's talking about. Gears of War 3 was not playable on the floor. Halo: Reach is a possibility...what else hmmmm. CoD: Black Ops maybe? What else is receiving hype with bad graphics?

SOAD5060d ago

Neither Reach nor Gears 3 have "pretty damn bad" graphics. Maybe they're not the best but they're some of the best.

Black Ops is receiving a lot of hype and so is Medal of Honor.

MitchGE5060d ago

The current generation is so obsessed with realistic textures that nobody remembers to address how impressive a solid 60fps in a chaotic game is. This kind of smoothness is perfect for a car combat game. When you're driving at 100+mph, blasting everyone in sight in massive levels full of destruction, you don't have time to stop and admire how many details and texture layers the brick wall on the building to the left has, but you want the game to run smooth and responsibly.

That said, Twisted Metal has some impressive texture and animation work, and some great effects. It's a strong engine. But it's the solid 60fps it maintains within these open areas and high levels of chaos that sets it up as a visual beast.

It's no Uncharted 2 or GOWIII, but it doesn't need to be. Remember, Jaffe created GOW on PS2, which set the visual benchmark in its day. If Jaffe was going for top grade visuals, he would get them. I think Eat Sleep Play is going for less textural detail to achieve that silky smooth 60fps. Nobody should be complaining here, the game looks and runs fantastic.

hesido5060d ago

MitchGE, still shots and 30fps video don't do 60fps *any* justice. Just see them in their silky smooth 60fps glory, in motion. The E3 videos were 30fps, and doesn't reflect the game. It needs to be smooth, fast, and chaotic without hurting your eyes. For that, 60 fps is a must. And not every game has to look like Uncharted 2, which goes for a cinematic look, and has more than double the time to do it (as game engine and physics engine would not need to run faster than 30fps., tell that to a 60fps game)

Rainstorm815060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

But games like L4D series has alot of hype behind it and it is one of the worst looking pieces of shit graphically ive seen this gen.

So....It happens

The graphics issue is only being brought up because PS3 exclusives are meant to out do everything in the universe graphically and when it doesnt its marked as a failure.

I do wonder which games he was talking about, blaze it couldnt have been those games they actually look pretty good.

BTW i thought TM looks pretty good especially in the E3 trailer on PSN but maybe its just me.

LoVeRSaMa5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

Nintendo, as much as I hate to say it they dominate.. is that because of Graphics you say?

No its Gameplay and the Twsited Metal series was always about gameplay, its good to see all areas of gaming filled, I think Developers this gen were too pressured to make games with amazing visuals and in some cases lost out with gameplay.

Jaffe knows what hes doing, hes proved he can do GFX, not its time for gameplay.

Roll on Twisted Metal.

AridSpider5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

Yeah Reach and Gears of War 3 have pretty impressive visuals so I doubt he was talking about those titles. If he is...dunno why.

I could agree on Call of Duty: Black Ops though - how many more times are they gonna use that tired ass engine?

Crysis 2 doesn't have much hype. Only hype is people trying to see what the 360 can deliver. Besides that, i don't think many people care about that game.

Medal of Honor looks damn impressive so it can't be that.

If something is receiving a lot of hype it's hard to imagine that it has bad graphics. Maybe this guy is just butthurt :)

DARK WITNESS5060d ago

@ AridSpider

Are you talking about MOH single player or the multiplayer ?

I have been playing the Beta and personally I think MOH looks crap, really, really crap ! I know it's a beta, but of all the betas I have been in the end result has never been that far off.

raztad5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

I was ok with your comment but you lost me here:

"Medal of Honor looks damn impressive so it can't be that."

Not it doesnt look impressive. Tried MoH for a few minutes before game crashed on me and it looks very underwhelming.

Black:OPS and MoH are probably the best guesses. One could say they are 30+fps but so is Twisted Metal. TM looks very good for the size of the maps, all the mayhem going on and the fast pace. Looking forward to it.

ProA0075060d ago

There is no hype behind Crackdown 2 lol. That game will bomb - we all know it.

Megaton5060d ago

Crackdown 2 looks like it's running on Warhawk's engine.

bioshock12215060d ago

Crackdown 2 like the guy above said has no hype at all so it's not that.

whothedog5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

I'm sure Crackdown is a fun game but man, that game looked ugly. Anyways it's not always about graphics.

frjoethesecond5060d ago

They ruined the look of crackdown in the second one. This is one of them imo.

xboxlj5060d ago

Are you guys actually saying that TM has better graphics than Crackdown2? And that Crackdown 2 will bomb? Would you like to wager which game sells more copies?

Killjoy30005059d ago (Edited 5059d ago )

Warhawk is actually a pretty good looking game. Better looking than Crackdown 2 for sure. I mean, what it lacks in visuals it surely makes up for with 4xAA, a buttery smooth frame rate that never dips, and pretty much zero lag. The water to this day still looks sexy as well.

@xboxlj
I cannot believe you would even SUGGEST that Crackdown 2 will sell more copies than a proven franchise 15 years in the making that helped launch a console that eventually became the highest selling of all time. Have you even seen the numbers for Twisted Metal games? You sir, are delusional.

socom4... as a true socom fan, the graphics arnt really good at all. considering the time frame we are in.. (cant wait for the game though it is going to be the best the hell with all you haters)

edit: am i wrong? im re-thinking my comment, what do yall think does socom4 have good graphics? maybe i am a little disappointed because i am a huge fan idk a true fan should be the biggest critic.

thats the only one i can think of. anyways.. TM has good graphics, not the best, but defiantly acceptable compared to some of the newer games that have come out.

jack_burt0n5060d ago

socom 4 looks great imo consider all the cinematics are in engine its a good looking game.

RememberThe3575060d ago

I've never played the games but all I hear about is the gameplay. I thought it looked good. I wasn't expecting Killzone or anything out of it and I'm sure Zipper wasn't given the budget to make this game blow minds visually.

KwietStorm_BLM5060d ago

SOCOM4 looks great. I don't know what you were expecting. It looks a lot better than Confrontation.

arakouftaian5060d ago

so does TM and some parts of TM look old but most of the game look really good and the gameplay is realy great, same for Socom it looks
great.

mugoldeneagle035060d ago

Is a tricky beast to tackle graphics wise. You can't really compare it since there are no other *true* next gen SOCOM games, and if you do count Confrontation it's ahead of it by a mile.

The thing I look at is they're obviously using the same engine as MAG, no? And if that's the case, it looks damn good. A lot of people downgraded MAG for visuals, aside from the player count in game, and SOCOM 4 looks way better than MAG, and still months away from release.

I'm not comparing it to GOW3 or Uncharted by any means, but for a shooter it's definitely up there

PoSTedUP5059d ago

ok i guess it as just that first vid where they were showing off PSMOVE, there it looked like a ps2 game, i guess the recent ones look pretty good. just the crappy vids on the internet i was watching.

blue7xx75060d ago

Gears 3 nor Halo Reach have bad graphics so it's obviously not those.

Anyways to be fair to this guy I remember when they announced God Of War 3 at the Video game awards and most people were saying it had crappy graphics and months later now they are considered one of the best. So I'm sure they will improve over time it wont release until 2011 so they have time.

gta28005060d ago

One thing you gotta love about Jaffe. He speaks his mind and keeps it real. Any other dev would of given you a bunch of fake munbo jumbo to hype you up. I personally like the graphics so far and won't mind the 30% final increase :) Getting this day one regardless! This game belongs in my PS3.

maddhatter1235060d ago

it has to be a nintendo game since nothing at ms' conference is getting attention(slam disagree all you want it true) and it is the same with all other 3rd party devs while lots are talking about the games nintendo has shown.

Raf1k15060d ago

I think too many people have been spoilt with games that have great visuals. From watching the gameplay videos of Twisted Metal it does look like their major focus is on gameplay which is the main thing.

Nobody complains about Halo or Crackdown graphics yet they're lots of fun to play so I see no need to complain about the way this game looks as long as they can deliver great gameplay.

beardpapa5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

not sure if there's a fallout demo, but I think f3 vegas' graphics are pretty meh and people seem to really dig fallout 3. imo though I prefer the first two games.

tplarkin75060d ago

Twisted Metal was born on PS1 and it shows. It looked like a top down PSN title.

kanetheking5060d ago

u ment to go around at 100mph shoot everything what u think it gt5 lol.

sixaxis5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

damn, im finding hard time to get rid of my beta keys. ppl just dont want into MOH beta, with all this negative feedback they dont care about it anymore. forexample last night it took 3 hours before anyone responded to my key giveaway in another forum.

so anyway, i have 1 left,so whoever wants one, PM me.

EDIT: got rid of it, yay

FACTUAL evidence5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

My only problem with TM ATM is the explosions, and the way things get destroyed. Do you see when someone crashes into a house? It just disapears then the house is down. I think water effects/explosions/environment crumbing needs to be worked on the most.

sashimi5060d ago

@ FACTUAL
the houses just disappearing is a bug and it will be fixed according to jaffe

ico925060d ago

well if you look at God Of War 3 and then you look at Twisted Metal both were developed by Jaffe, you can see why people are curious.

Strange_Evil5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

GOW3 was not developed by Jaffe, it was developed by Sony Santa Monica studios.. Jaffe was only part of SSM in part 1 after which he left and created his own studio Eat Sleep and Play.

ESP studio is small and doesn't have the funding of SSM. To be fair GOW is a much bigger franchise than TM. GOW3 had a budget of 45 million,I doubt TM has even half that budget.

Besides, TM is all about blowing stuff and that part of the game looked ridiculously fun at E3....

raztad5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

Jaffe himself explained the KEY difference between GoW3 and TM visuals. It all comes down to memory management.

GoW3 as a slower paced game relays in constant streaming from disk, so they can flush and load high quality textures every time they are needed. On the other hand TM runs a lot faster and disk streaming is not a feasible solution (unless you want to see popins) so the game needs to keep textures on RAM most of the time. 500M RAM is not that much so compromises are needed.

SpLinT5060d ago

He's talking about Zelda and some other.

Rock Bottom5060d ago

Twisted Metal have always had bad graphics to be honest, and wasn't this supposed to be a PSN only game at one point?

That being said, the graphic really could have been better.

lelo2play5060d ago

From the videos Twisted Metal's graphics were average, nothing special... nor did i like the gameplay... but i have never played any Twisted Metal game.

iPirates5060d ago

Graphics look fine to me. Maybe give the exploding buildings a little more animation/debris... other then that, when it comes to shooting cars, and demolishing everything anyway, are you really gonna care?

mastiffchild5060d ago

Two things(and I'm still not interested in TM as a series as there's just nothing there to hook me in)-we've seen mostly online game play, no?Secondly, it's using the Warhawk engine isn't it?

Now, and I am stupid so bear with me a minute, neither of those things would indicate, to me, cutting edge visuals but a slight downplay from SP and an engine happier making a game silky smooth to play rather than one to wow you instantly with eye candy.

I'm no fan of what I've seen so far but even so I can still see why he's gone the way he has and why it's best for THIS game. People can be so dim at times.

As for the two games he goes on about-there's really no point second guessing someone who won't tell you anyway and could also just be talking crap. He's only, rightly, sticking up for his game and explaining the trade offs(for the billionth time) to people barely removed from Amoeba, it seems.

callahan095060d ago

He's not talking about Gears 3 or Halo Reach, they both have very nice graphics. He simply must be talking about Crackdown 2 for one of those two games, though. Not sure what the other could be, but Crackdown 2 has pretty miserable graphics in my opinion.

callahan095060d ago

Not sure what the disagrees are about. Gears 3 and Halo Reach look good, I don't know why anybody would think he's talking about those games or think that they could be described as "pretty damn bad" in terms of graphics. On the other hand, I don't know how you can disagree that Crackdown 2 looks pretty damn bad, in terms of graphics. Just look at the game. Don't judge it on fun here (when you go to play it, definitely judge it on fun, but not for this since the whole point is to talk about graphics), and just look at the visuals. There are honestly very few games coming out that don't look better than Crackdown 2 purely in terms of visuals.

JumpNPlayBon5059d ago

you've got disagrees because he said HYPED games. Crackdown2 has NO hype behind it. If anything he is talking about zelda, which looks terrible, but gets a pass from gamers in love with the past joys of zelda.

Imperator5059d ago

Maybe one of the demos is Crackdown 2. It had terrible graphics and gameplay.

ghostface5060d ago

Pretty good graphics, but not as good as everybody saying.

despair5060d ago

yea i don't think crysis 2 can even compare to the original crysis.

Lou-Cipher5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

I think TM PS3 is going to be great, but there is no reason not to have great graphics anymore. The PS3's hardware is very capable, and there is no excuse for mediocre graphics on the system.

Twisted Metal doesn't have to look like Killzone 3 or Uncharted 2, but we PS3 owners do expect a certain level of graphics that should be met on every single game.(especially if it is an exclusive game) There is still alot of time before this game gets released, so hopefully it looks alot better than it does now. (The gameplay looks amazing though)

Dont skimp on the sound either, I want 7.1 HD sound also. :)

SOAD5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

"but we PS3 owners do expect a certain level of graphics that should be met on every single game.(especially if it is an exclusive game)"

Speak for yourself. I don't care what the visuals are like. I'm sure the game will be a blast.

LMAO @ "we PS3 owners." It's not a cult, and I feel sad that you think you're part of some elite group.

Edit:

You're not paying 10 bucks extra because of better graphics. You're paying 10 bucks extra because the hardware companies are racking up huge losses on their consoles and have to raise the prices to offset those losses, and the publishers are looking to make larger profits.

The notion that you're paying 10 bucks extra for better quality is bullshit. The publishers already had the technology to make good-looking games last-gen. They were merely limited by the console hardware and had to tone down the visuals from PC level to console level.

Next gen, console games will cost 75 bucks instead of 65. Publishers will claim that 3D is the reason, but EA already said that it doesn't cost that much more to make a game 3D.

Lou-Cipher5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

We pay next gen prices for games, we should get next gen visuals.

You dont need to be part of an "elite group" to realize that.

We pay $60 bucks for our games instead of $50 like we did last gen. Why? because we are supposed to get better graphics & better sound.

If developers are making last gen games, then why should we pay next gen pricing?

You are right, it probably will be a blast, and I know graphics dont make gameplay any better, but it definetly adds more value to the games we play, and since we are are paying for it, we should absolutely be getting it.

Unicron5060d ago

No Lou...

"We pay $60 bucks for our games instead of $50 like we did last gen. Why? because we are supposed to get better graphics & better sound. "

You pay $60 because development costs have skyrocketed for next gen systems. It takes a lot of skilled people a lot of time to write code for the 360 and PS3, and it just takes longer to make HD assets (textures, models, etc). Are you GUARANTEED something ground breaking every time? Certainly not. It's up to the budget and dev schedule. Not every game gets the support in time and money that GT5 or KZ3 get.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

It will have a lot better graphics, it is in Pre alpha, the lighting, particles, shadows, textures is not like the final product.

But yeah, like you said, this game is not about Graphics.

thebudgetgamer5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

one of the first games i bought was namco museum to play galaga. as a matter of fact i own it for four consoles and the plug n play.

KwietStorm_BLM5060d ago (Edited 5060d ago )

Who is this "we" you keep speaking of? Please don't throw all of "us" into the same boat. You think we're paying $60 for better graphics and sound? lol I have been gaming since Intellivision, and I swear the mentality of the average gamer has not dipped this low in contrast to the previous generation EVER before. I cannot wrap my head around it. Game prices went up because development costs went up. Wii games cost the same as last generation or less because the console itself is on old technology. Some games look better than other. That's just how things are. I don't know about people like you, but I'm paying $60 for a good game, not because it looks better than the game that came out last month.

All I ask for is a new Twisted Metal that allows flat screen & PSVR2 cross play that also supports a wheel.
Would be heaven.

Babadook7281d ago

Wow. I like the idea of VR twisted metal with a wheel.

Rebel_Scum281d ago

They need to get the enemy AI balance right. Thats what made 2 the best in the series. Black was abysmal in that dept.

neomahi281d ago

You don't. Do sequels. If you've gotta reboot, might as well do a new IP. God of War is the only game I can say that did a successful reboot

TiredGamer281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

Isn’t the new GoW just a sequel technically?

I personally think they can leverage the roots of the series. The original TM in 1995 took place on Christmas Eve 2005, and it was the 10th contest in history. Why not “reboot” the franchise by making a prequel of sorts showing the origin story of the series and maybe linking all the future games in a brilliant way. Seems like such an obvious idea to leverage old with the new (kind of look how Doom 2016 did with its lore).

Knightofelemia281d ago

PlayStation confirm they are working on Twisted Metal series

The rumours were legit. The Twisted Metal franchise is coming back, Sony
officially announced at CES 2022.

NecrumOddBoy844d ago

I hope this is camp as all hell.

bouzebbal843d ago

They should have made Destruction All star with a Twisted Metal skin as launch title.. With some more content of course.

NecrumOddBoy842d ago (Edited 842d ago )

Rumor mill is that the team used All Stars as a test bed game to make a PS5 Twisted Metal in the future. No idea why they made this though. Total miss and it could hurt them in the end. Twisted Metal is really awesome. I honestly hope they take this series the Forza Horizon route. Maybe a big open world like a destroyed city in an apocalyptic setting. Still can have arenas and races, battles etc, but also add RPG elements and quests, challenges etc.

Dirtnapstor842d ago

Agreed. I am mildly surprised they did not do a Twisted Metal iteration vs DAS. Could have easily reskinned everything, no?

sourOG843d ago

Agreed. I’m playing serious Sam now and I think it’s awful in a great way. I’m enjoying it.

Majin-vegeta844d ago

Looks like the new game is pretty much confirmed now.

Bobertt843d ago

Idk David Jaffe had said he has seen stuff about the TV show but Sony has never told him anything about a new game. I find it hard to believe they would not tell the creator of the franchise they were going to make a new game.

Army_of_Darkness842d ago

Sony owns the franchise and Jaffe is no longer associated with them anymore, so Sony doesn't have to inform him on anything really...

NapalmSanctuary841d ago

...says f2p with Lucid developing. Might wanna keep them expectations low.

isarai844d ago

I hope it follows the gameplay style of hardware rivals, seriously that game was awesome to play

Godmars290843d ago

How about having to race through a destructible city with tons of people to mow down.

burnout with rocket launchers and ability to drive on skyscraper roofs or through office floors.

DarXyde843d ago

That sounds like Carmageddon meets Warhawk.

I'm iffy on reviving Twisted Metal personally. I replayed it on PS3 via PSOne classics because I loved the originals and I must say, these titles haven't aged well. We're now two generations removed from then, which was already 1-2 generations removed from the originals.

There needs to be some serious modernization efforts for these games to do well.

Godmars290842d ago

@DarXyde:
And what would be wrong with a "Carmageddon meets Warhawk" game? Pretty much what you'd want of a PS5 version of a PS1 title.

NapalmSanctuary841d ago

@Godmars Thats not Twisted Metal. Its one thing to do something like that with an alt game mode but Twisted Metal already has an identity. The gameplay needs to stay true to it.

--Onilink--843d ago

The only thing confirmed by Sony so far was a TV series, not a game

Neonridr843d ago

that's great, looking forward to some next gen destruction!

TheDoomedGuy843d ago

Imagine how it'll feel with the dual sense.

--Onilink--843d ago

I get the feeling that most people arent really reading the article. The only thing confirmed by Sony is the TV series.

Anything about a new game is just rumors and speculation at this point
