OXCGN’s E3 2010 Show Awards

OXCGN: "The awards no-one else gives out.

One thing we noticed as we wandered around the main halls in E3 was the large number of stickers, plaques and awards attached to the signs for many games, proclaiming them as being ‘IGN Best Action Game Nominee’ or ‘Kotaku Best of E3′. Predictably these were fixed on the biggest sequels or most elaborate setups.

It got us thinking however: why do we have to stick to the traditional Academy Award-esque categories? Why not honour the less obvious achievements overlooked in the chaos of the show floor?"

"Biggest PR Screw-Up: Microsoft – Failing to notice someone shaking a 360 S while a disc spun inside to see if it would scratch it"

Whoops.

BadCircuit5077d ago

Yeah that's pretty basic product testing you would think.

GrathiusXR5076d ago

That's not the PR fault.. If you're talking about the fact that someone actually moved the 360 S whilst Alan Wake was in there loading up they have problems!

There is a sticker on the 360 S that said DO NOT MOVE 360 WHILE DISC IS IN TRAY!

Pretty obvious.. And after so many years if you haven't realized you DO NOT move the 360 whilst a disc is in there loading and spinning then well you've got problems lol!

XboxOZ3605077d ago

Should have had biggest technological mistake, no slot loading in the new Xbox 360 'S' doohhhhh . . . (no, it's not called the Slim btw, it's official name is simply the Xbox 360 'S') . .

I know it was about keeping initial costs down, but I think xbox owners may have shelled out an extra $30-$40 for a unit with a slot loader - not sure, but I would have.

REALgamer5077d ago

I seriously don't get why a slot-loading drive was left out.

Maybe something to do with the drive manufacturer's used?...

XboxOZ3605077d ago

Perhaps, but it's an omission that will affect public opinion, that's 'for sure'.

While I understand the reasoning behind it, initial cost higher than desired, then dropping as manufacturing gets into full swing etc, it's something that should have been addressed. It's their lack of forethought though.

Surely they knew the gamer's thoughts around it . . .well one would hope so.

gaminoz5077d ago

For sure a stuff up. Besides the disc tray and perhaps the lack of blu Ray the new 360 looks might fine!

XboxOZ3605076d ago

I think you'll find that Blu Ray is no longer a nessesity for games, in fact, almost all of the PS3 games use far less than what would be needed for a normal DVD9, even developers have admitted this.

With the huge shift towards online distribution, and with movies, Online live, streaming, Games On Demand, etc etc, the need for such a device is falling within a gaming platform.

HD can be streamed now, sure - in Australia it's an issue, but we have to understand, Aust and many other smaller countries make up a very very small % of the global market when it comes to making large marketing choices such as including Blu Ray drives.

Apple allow full HD movie streaming, so does XboxLive with Movies On Demand, So why is there a need for a device that would only increase the production costs?

It doesn't make sense to do that, especially now. I wouldn'yt be surprised to see Sony drop the Blu Ray at some stage off the PS4, and start using Full HD streaming thorugh it Premium PSN service, which they will charge for, and gain MUCH more returns for it in the end.

They would make 10 times the revenue they could in selling the hardware by using an online HD service. Ruling out the need for such a devise in a machine.

Especially given many TV's are now being made with built in Blu-Rays, incl many of the major makers of TV's.

SO, if you were in that position, would you waste money in placing a device in your hardware that is now being delivered via another medium that you are trying to push heavily through Live . .?

Prob not. We have to look at it logically, not emotionally.

gaminoz5077d ago

Yeah I love how games get trumpeted at release with best of the e3 show quotes with IGN or whoever...they don't always live up to it and too often originality isn't the criteria so we have the same games but with a new number next to them being awarded.

BadCircuit5077d ago

Activision must be spending a lot on their court case as they seem to not really have put much effort into their E3 displays according to the article.

BadCircuit5077d ago (Edited 5077d ago )

Bulletstorm had the biggest line-ups? Really?

This surprised me;

Least Attractive New Console: Nintendo 3DS – the differently sized screens and black face on the top panel ruin the symmetry. Backwards step in aesthetics from the DSi XL.

AXIS of Reality5076d ago

There were some 3DS in glass cases using iridescent paint (looks either metallic or black depending on the angle viewed) that looked nice, but honestly the massive bezels and chunkiness of the unit reminded me of the original DS model - there's a lot of wasted space. It just looks...awkward really. I'd wait until the inevitable 3DS Lite.

Bit of a shame they didn't stick with the DSi XL size, I've gotten used to the nice large screens.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

It turns out that many moons ago, Microsoft once had its eye on the Sony published LittleBigPlanet series.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1822d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere2d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 11h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney1d 6h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno2d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno2d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

2d ago
fsfsxii2d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno2d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
