Return of the IP: How Snowblind Will Save LOTR

PSInsider writes: You can't just walk into Mordor, and, these days, you can't just walk into the store and pick up a quality Lord of the Rings title for your console like it's 2003. Since Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001, there have been twelve LOTR games, fourteen if you count expansions and EA's (sadly) canned The White Council, not to mention free, browser-based games, board games, card games, and all the other ways publishers have sought to monetize the property. Surely, this flood of games would be enough for even the most die-hard "ringer," no?

No. A thousand times, no.

Anyway to make a buck....amirite?

D3adcell5101d ago

The LotR could make for a pretty good game but so far all I have seen is crap from EA. Maybe this will turn out good.

JasonXE5101d ago

poor lotr :-(

Prepare for lotr hobbit games if the movie ever comes out.

CreativeWriter5101d ago

Since The Hobbit is a more self-contained story (smaller, single-narrative), it's probably better suited for a game than LotR. I guess they could split it into two at the barrel ride chapter, as was rumored with the movies, or give it the Zelda treatment, doing a cell-shaded version and more realistic movie tie-ins.

The Smaug sneaking mission would be fantastic! Think of the gameplay variety: Gollum riddle/puzzle chapter, Gollum chase level, sneaking past the trolls, barrel-ride/avoid the rocks, battle with the spiders, Bard archery mission, Beorn bear/hunting section, etc.

I don't think an lotr game should follow the movie/book plot, but it could only follow it's lore and theme. Or use material from the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales. It's a very rich material and it would be much much more interesting to see it on an game.

CreativeWriter5101d ago

Chris Tolkien seems determined to hold on to the rights for The Sil, Lost Tales, and Children of Hurin. There's enough material in there for decades of games, but he sees himself as curator of the heart of the lore. I'm actually surprised the Tolkien estates are having anything to do with War in the North...

LOTR online is like this, it follows along side the story in the books. Turbine did a pretty good job in creating the world, and it looks pretty nice. This fall it goes F2P as well, following their D&D online model.

Coded-Dude5099d ago

it will be interesting to see what they do with it using the D&D model....

Wow, I guess it has been a long time since I played a LOTR game that I like. Last one was on GameCube, haha.
Really detailed article too.

They really mean they are pivoting to slot machines on mobile devices.

I don’t think there ever was a time for GaaS. Its entire resistance is revolved around making a game that generates recurring revenue constantly throughout its lifetime. It’s straight up a corporate scumbag design.

I watched the video seeing if anything changed since the initial Suicide gameplay vid before the delay and it looks the same. So weird watching all the characters just start a gun to their back and bounce super high shooting with no kick-back animation in an empty dead world. The voice acting is cringe and there doesn’t have any sense of atmosphere or immersion like the Arkham games.

And they expect you to pay $70 to $100 for this and then pay more for Battle Passes and items to make grinding less a chore. Yea, no thank you. I hope you learn a hard lesson with this one.

Genius executives at work. "hey, what we're doing is working great. Let's change it."

LOGICWINS210d ago

"Invasions" is technically free live service game with new content every 45 days. It's the best mode MK has ever had IMO. As a single player gamer, it gives me a reason to stick around after the story mode.

garos82209d ago

You have a terrible taste in games

-Foxtrot209d ago

I feel like their whole approach relies on how the Suicide Squad sells

Wait....why does live service = bad?

New mk sold less then the last in the same time frame the NEW MK is legit a live service game with its horrible monopoly board. I just wanted a normal title...

FatalityX77210d ago

It's not on older hardware, so that's why it seems less. No ps4/xbox one versions.

Sgt_Slaughter209d ago

I doubt older hardware would make a difference, given the ratios of sales of other multi-gen games

PunksOnN4G209d ago

Nah the new MK full of live service shit even the singleplayer monopoly board they gave use instead of a normal kyrpt says enough and sales reflect that also this MK is very combo heavy it not noob friendly what's so ever like others

Flewid638209d ago

Wasn't the last one a live service game?

MehmetAlperTR209d ago

More live services.. LOL.. i hope you ll see the deep.
