Gabe Newell's New Opinion of PS3 Shows That Sony is Wising Up

GFB: "It’s never been anything remotely close to a secret that big bad Gabe Newell has had less than stellar things to say about the PS3. So needless to say at this year’s E3, fans of Valve were shocked when Gabe “crashed” Sony’s conference to announce Portal 2 was coming to PS3. Had the world turned upside down? Was the apocalypse coming a couple years early? Maybe Sony realized that they had to open up some doors to Valve and allow them the freedom on the hardware that they provide to “close 3rd-party” companies."

bubz for first Fat Gabe joke. I believe that's a rule

Shadow Flare5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

cmon now, give respect where respect is due. It takes a big man to do a 180 and stomach your own words. And gabe proved he's a big man who can stomach his own words. I mean, it takes alot of guts to go on stage and go back on yourself. That man has guts. That man has huge guts

Genesis55061d ago

Well if you can get Gabe on board after the anti PS3 stance he took. I don't think there is anybody they can't convert.

Cevapi885061d ago

i want to see how far he will push Steam support for the PS3 and how the games will fare to its counterparts on the PC and other consoles

Why o why5061d ago

true. despite the crap hes said it takes a strong person to swallow their pride in front of so many people. At the same time ps3 fans might get accused of hypocrisy if they all of a sudden stopped the f*t jokes...Sad

Big up Gabe....just for showing people how NOT to be a coward

Jinxstar5061d ago

I respect your opinion but honestly if valve wants to stay competitive and lucrative this generation making a engine that runs on PS3 is essential.

I guess what I am saying is when someone flashes potentially millions of dollars in front of you face you'll not only swallow your own words but potentially do just about anything from "Duck walk the sony press conference naked" to "French kiss greenburg on G4TV"... I don't think it took a lot of the guy to do what he did. I think anyone with half a brain and a company to run would have done the same. Heck I'd do both of those for a million dollars in a heart beat let alone how much potential there is for the new source engine on the PS3...

solar5061d ago

Jinxstar,

Valve never needed the Ps3 to be "competitive and lucrative". they make money hand over fist with with their games and Steam as a platform.

and the reason why Valve is now going to do their own in-house Ps3 games is because the Ps3 is now a viable console to make money on as a 3rd party developer (other than IW and Rockstar).

Shadow Flare5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

you know, im sensing that some of you weren't reading inbetween the lines with my comment. Was "That man has huge guts" and "gabe proved he's a big man" a little too subtle lol?

Seriously though, i do honestly think it was real good of him to do what he did. It does show alot of courage to stand in front of the whole gaming industry and say what he did. He's made some scathing attacks on the ps3 in the past but he showed a lot of courage that day at e3. Well done gabe

@jinxstar, i get what you're saying but gabe didnt by any means have to take stage at e3, but he did. You could hear he was really nervous too. Thats a really brave thing to do

jerethdagryphon5061d ago

ive said it before, we need to move beyond gabe fat jokes and othr purile excuses for humor were supposed to be mature gamers

jokes such as that are as tasteless as yo momma jokes are when coming from the mouth of a over 30s person

BlackTar1875061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

agree 100% although i never gabe hated but i agree 100% and awesome that you understand that while some do not.

Sounds like a man who had to eat his own words before. it happens to the best of us like eating concrete. BTW i dont eat concrete : )

and i got the initial joke very clever indeed

BWS19825061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

I won't deny it. If I was in his shoes though, in 2006, I would have taken a wait and see approach and kept quiet, even if I felt the console was doomed. If he was that sure of it, he had to realize that if he was wrong about such a staunch stance against a company/platform, he'd be eating his words later (I don't mean that as a fat joke)...he had to know that if he was wrong, it'd come back at him later and he'd have an entire populace angry and insulted.

But I really had to research some other recent comments he's said to know he admitted he was wrong, per se. I didn't see an "I'm sorry" but it was more or less the same thing I suppose.

I have always liked Valve's work, and it was more about an attitude, not a talent or skill level.

Let's move past it and keep on bashing Bobby Kotex.

Now that Valve and Steam move also to MAC with Portal 2 using Steam Play. PC and MAC can play together.

Recently there is another article, PS3 have Steam Play with Steamworks.

Means PS3 + PC and probably MAC can play together as PC and MAC.

phinch5061d ago

Persistantthug5061d ago

Sony doesn't do much cash pay outs.

Now, do and did they give other forms of "incentivising"? Sure.

That could be anything....one of those was the ability to run some sort of Steam app. on PS3/PSN

multips3fan5061d ago

he probaly took a PS3 college class and noticed how easy to pogram for ps3?lol?

FragGen5061d ago

> I would like to know what changed his mind...
> Im curious about this indeed.

Ten pounds of pure ground beef, delivered fresh daily, to Gabe's office courtesy of Sony. That's what I heard anyway.

whothedog5061d ago

I think...wait for it... a few things factor in, but the main thing was the potential money.

Not money Sony paid Valve but potential money being made just by bringing their game to the PS3. Before PS3 install base wasn't as big, so they could overlook it without losing too much, now PS3 is right there with the 360 in terms of install base and why not double your profit if it's possible.

I also think Sony is going to be working with Valve to help the process of getting their games running on the PS3, and features.

Plus they wouldn't want to leave any platform out when HL3 comes out :), there bread and butter. Yes I believe HL3 will come out on consoles too.

mt5061d ago

if it is for money sony will pay to keep Final fantasy exclusive or grand theft auto games.

mythamp5061d ago

I think Valve begged Sony to allow them to make games for the PS3, honestly i do not think sony/playstation officials went to valve and asked please make your killer gamez for us, we will give you loads of money. It was most probably the opposite. This guy didnt show guts, he showed his fat ass and just said he will make a game for the PS3, there were no apology, the least he could have said is, "I underestimated the strength, capabilities of the PS3" - now that sounds like an apology instead of, Sony guys must be upset at me, KB wants to talk to be as VP sharpening things, which were really lame. You want our money, you cant have it steam boy.

yea i think he seen microsofts conference the day before and made his decision straight away.

Ive been boycoting Valves products since there whole ps3 thing started but ive losen up to them once they ported steam to mac and now PS3 ill plan to buy quite a few games

nycredude5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

I think it's more like Gabe is wising up. He can't ignore the potential revenues anymore. I give him mad props though to man up and pretty much apologize. I watched him at E3 on stage and he really manned up.

1 thing I learned in life is no matter how much you fuck up the best thing to do is just admit it and people will almost always forgive you and respect you more for it. I'm going to support him for it.

Sarcasm5061d ago

It's the 35 million and growing install base of the PS3, the PS3's open platform itself, maybe a money deal, and the VP of sharpening things.

clarkdef5061d ago

I agree stop with the fat jokes!

But I disagree with PS3 guys being like this, its a world wide problem.

BWS19825061d ago

to the Gabe Newell saga, MegaPowa?

I never made any jokes myself, and I've BEEN playing Valve games (well done) and own a 360 as well, but I will not fault anyone for finding Gabe's previous insults/remarks to be unnecessary and honestly, ignorant. After what he said on the offensive, expect some defensive from some nerds. He was outright brash towards Sony, and you have to come to expect retribution of some sort, at any maturity level.

Heisenberg5061d ago

is a barometer of Sony's wiseness... No, Gabe is just eating his words, something he's very good at I'm sure, because Sony proved him wrong about the PS3... The guy has no class, an overgrown fanboy. Having said that, I can't complain that Portal 2 is coming to the PS3.

FragMnTagM5061d ago

Maybe all that work he has done on the PS3 made him lose a few pounds. I am rather excited to see the steam app work on the PS3 and play PC gamers. I knew the PS3 was capable of it. Hell the 360 can do it and has been for years. I would really like to see some exclusive content for the PS3 as well as the multiplat stuff like Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 3. I know that if Sony has given him the tools to make the PS3 shine, Valve will do some nice things with them.

Can we quit with the fat jokes now? He is nowhere near as big as he used to be, in fact, I would call him husky now.

Whether the trolls want to admit it or not, Valve makes some awesome games and you should be happy that they are coming to PS3 now.

avengers19785061d ago

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers1d 20h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken1d 6h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

jambola1d 12h ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle1d 14h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6422d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long22d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197222d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic22d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 22d ago
DivineHand12522d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91322d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer22d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91321d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit21d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 21d ago
Christopher22d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6921d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit21d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher22d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken22d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197222d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic22d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2322d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218322d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder22d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
