Sony E3 Press Conference: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Missing | Examiner.com

Examiner.com:
"Sony is banking on new technologies and accessories for the PS3 to continue their push forward against the competition. It also doesn't hurt that the 3D on the PS3 can help push 3D HDTVs in the same way it helped push Blu-ray. The VP of Everything, Kevin Butler, was also on hand to bring some laughs and to introduce his PSP sidekick. We digested the press conference over night and look back at the good, the bad, the ugly, and what was missing in the Nintendo's E3 keynote presentation."

Kevin and GLaDOS were the most entertaining things at that conference. Sony was too busy stroking its own ego during that conference to really make an impact.

HighDefinition5066d ago

I think Sony and Nintendo just showed how established they are and how much MS isnt (through their own doings). IMO, Sony is gonna be runnin the console market and Nintendos gonna be runnin the handheld market for a long time to come (Im talking about quality not sales) I just dont know where MS fits in to all that. It would take MS 10 years to assemble the quality 1st party devs Sony and Nintendo have currently. BTW, that explains what just happened at e3.

-Alpha5066d ago (Edited 5066d ago )

Good point. MS doesn't have that first party, and it shows here. Nintendo and Sony has that history, that well established history.

I don't really think that was the problem though. For me, it's that MS is so connected with Kinect. The problem is, Kinect isn't much for hardcore gamers. And if you decide to override your conference with something that has proven to be unimpressive/unproven then you pretty much are going to have a bad conference.

I feared this for Move too. I feared Sony would show off the Eyepet game and all that. They did, but very briefly in trailers. Rather, they showed off Sorcery and PGA 11. Personally I'd have given Move more time. I didn't care to see a demonstration for PGA 11, they could have put that in a trailer. Point is, they were able not only to show off that games can appeal to a wider crowd (Sorcery, PGA, etc). with Move, but they also established a price. It just makes Sony look ready and confident. And at this stage that is what you want to see. Not some minigames and no price announcement.

I wanted to see LBP2 get some more time, especially with Move. Poor Media Molecule was overshadowed by everything else that was happening at Sony's conference. What we did see in LBP2 was very impressive, wish it got more of a spotlight though.

120FPS...you are wrong

just look at trend data year over year sales comparing m$ and sony

in america you can say PS3 is in last place...
not in europe and diffently not in japan

Easy

360-10.1 M/year
PS3-11.7 M/year

For overall sales, PS2 is leading at 136 Millions so far.

Will you shut the f' up now?

Shadow Flare5066d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

lol 120FPS is incredibly butthurt. You were one of those guys going..."bu bu bu bu buh teh E3!! Wait till E3!!" We waited and microsoft gave you one game and swiped you aside to focus on their new crowd. Don't get so butthurt 120FPS. We know you love to play sales more then actual games. Apparently microsoft knows that too because they announced only 1 new game and are focusing on the casuals now. So that should keep you happy 120FPS. See Sony knows ps3 gamers love playing games, which is why we have too many this year and next. But if you like playing sales, take comfort that 360 has been dead last in month to month sales with ps3 and wii outselling 360 every month since launch worldwide. If you like to bet on the fat kid who had a 10 minute headstart in the marathon, be my guest. But i'd rather be with a company that plans its future further then the length of its nose. Oh yeah and 120FPS, since you love playing sales, chew on the fact that ps3 outsold 360 in europe despite launching 18 months after 360. But don't worry about that. Have a good E3. Oh wait...you didn't

jagstatboy5065d ago

you forget the 360 has a 1 year head start.

nveenio5065d ago

The PS3 is in last (arguably)...not Sony. That's two very different things. Sony is the only company that even still supports last-gen hardware. And I think that says a lot about where the company's loyalties lie. Some people think they should just drop PS2, but Sony has a lot of respect for the people that brought Sony to where they are today. That's why they're pushing out PS1 and PS2 classics to PSN, and why Nintendo is starting to jump on that wagon with titles like NBAJam and GoldenEye. Microsoft doesn't seem to give a crap about its fans, and that's why they're losing steam.

MysticStrummer5065d ago

LOL @120FPS. You're seriously going to compare Norway to worldwide sales... and then say "see what I did there?" like you made a good point??? LOL

The Good was Almost Everything

The Bad was the Too Much Talking + some motion crap

The Ugly was not seeing a Huge Line-up of First Party Exclusive Games, but then you realize that E3 is not the Only Gaming Conference...

Gamescom + TGS Here We Go!!!

nickjkl5066d ago

i think you mixed up the ugly with the missing

Johnny Rotten5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

I agree with the too much talking,

at least once I was hoping Jack Tretton would just say: "now lets cut to the chase on this one and get right to another game!"

RageAgainstTheMShine5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

period. End of argument.

and M$ is becoming more irrelevant and more irrelevant.

And given the benefit of the doubt even if Ninty beat Sony (I consider their show a tie) at least Sony beat Microsoft by a huge nuke!

that is what matters.

next year Sony wont be as forgiving and tolerant to Nintendo.

Christopher5066d ago (Edited 5066d ago )

***Gamers never like having to pay extra especially for stuff they've been getting for free. Playstation Plus is no exception as the $50 a year service will add exclusive demos and beta access along with discounts on games. All stuff that was there for free before.***

Wait, what?

People have been getting:
- Free games?
- Discounts on top of existing prices and sales?
- Exclusive betas and demos for free?

I need to check out PSN more often because I forgot that MAG, GoW3, and other demos/betas were available freely to everyone. I also didn't know that I automatically got a % off of each of my purchases. And free games? Crap, where do I download those? I don't see a FREE category in my listing of PSN games, only certain DLC.

I think the author is assuming that normal PSN users will no longer get deals on games (such as Spring Fever sales) or access to demos/betas. Kind of jumping the gun there considering it was said that this wouldn't change at all.

Johnny Rotten5065d ago

I won't be paying $50 a year that's for sure and I'm thankful I still get to play online for free!

On another note it's good to see the CRTC bend a little by letting Sony finally open up the media/movie network to Canada!

SonyOwnsNextYear5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

All microsoft has left is a 1 year lead....oh wait o.O
they have hddvd o.O
They have tons of ga.....actually only one exclusive game i would play. Then again that game is found on pc, so we are back to zero.
Yeah MS doesnt have much, but at least they have 45 million blind and deaf sheep in their back pocket. On second thought if you factor in the failure rates....that puts them at about half of the 45 mill.

you guys are right. i tried, but microsoft doesnt have s#it. I mean seriously how can they even consider themselves major players in this industry. all they have done from day one is burn money on a mediocre investment. i guess the days of timed exclusives and promoting/considering multiplats as their own i.p's are done.

Winning a conference is something that only fanboys have created. Each company had great things to show off, something for everything.

dktxx25066d ago

exccept for Microsoft, they ate shit pretty hard

BannedForNineYears5066d ago (Edited 5066d ago )

How did they lose if they were better than Microsoft? -_-

Edit: For that matter, it's even debatable weather or not Sony beat Nintendo too......

jonboi245066d ago

I wouldn't say Sony ULTIMATELY lost E3. to the core gamers and soome gaming media sites and to me, sony destroyed MS. non-gaming media will eat the kinect stuff and call it revolutionary and say how impressive it is, though at this point its still unproven for core gamers. nintendo literally came out guns blazin' rocked E3 with nostalgia and 3DS but seriously a new system usually is a show stealer. what would happen if sony showed the PSP2 or MS stepped into the handheld, would nintendo still leave such a strong impression? if someone didn't grow up playing all those old nintendo franchises would those games announced for the wii still matter? nintendo and sony both played it safe and relied heavily on established franchises, while MS relied too much on casual Kinect stuff. the later two conferences rocked and as a gamer there is so much to look forward too and not enough money to enjoy every thing.

madpuppy5065d ago

Than Sony put Microsoft to shame.

Pennywise5065d ago

Nintendo rocked the place? They announced everything we knew they would announce.

I am not into handheld gaming, or SD graphics... So to me, Sony won.

randomwiz5065d ago

Im sorry, I wasn't aware people already knew what the 3DS might look like, have an analouge stick, a depth slider, SD card slot, the ability to play 3D movies, kingdom hearts, resident evil, metal gear solid, a new zelda game, DK returns, mario sports mix, just dance 2, or probably the biggest announcement, golden eye...

On that note, I really do think the winner was Sony. Although Nintendo's stuff was impressive, nothing really amazed me. Sony's was just spectacular. Killzone 3 in 3D supposedly looks amazing, they did what microsoft failed to do - show the hardcore side of motion control gaming. They also got Gabe Newell to introduce Portal 2 and get him to say the ps3 version will be the best console version. They even introduced the new Twisted Metal.

But overall I think Kevin Butler's surprise appearance and speech makes Sony's conference the best.

cygnuszero5065d ago

Kevin Butler was okay at best, but sonys conference was awful. Should be an exciting year for the PS3. More Killzone, more LBP, more Infamous.

Thrilling stuff there.

Sony couldn't even come close to Nintendo. But it was a good showing, sort of

HowarthsNJ5066d ago

While I love all the old Nintendo franchises, that's all they were - more of the same.

Not that I'm saying Sony's stuff was any better, my hopes were too high for something truly amazing.

n4gno5065d ago

Yeah sure neco, probably for someone who don't care about games for gamers, 3D, 1:1 motion control, bluray/hd quality, etc

what a joke.

MGOelite5066d ago

why do people keep saying $130 with no game??

why are sites blatently choseing to ignore the $100 bundle with the game....

Queasy5066d ago

The $100 bundle is the PS Move controller, the EyeToy camera, and the Sports Champion game.

I have no interest in the Sports Champion game but if I want to play Killzone 3 or Socom using the PS Move then I will buy the bundle. That's $100 there and I still need the Navigation controller which is an extra $30. Therefore, $130.

fooltheman5066d ago

why do you think they won't bundle it with other games too?

Queasy5066d ago

Because they said the bundle came with Sports Champions?

jmare5066d ago

You can use the DS3 in lieu of the Navigator. See, I just saved you $30.

Raf1k15066d ago (Edited 5066d ago )

I think the bundle comes with a demo disk not a game.

edit: Sorry yeah, I forgot it came with Sports Champions

Darkfiber5066d ago (Edited 5066d ago )

The game is called Sorcery, not "The Sorcer", rube.

colonel1795066d ago

It says that the only thing missing was a HP license. IMO, it doesn't, as much as the game could be a HP clone, I like that is a new franchise that it can evolve. And we can have another new iconic character in the long list of Sony's mascots.

Hopefully it's developed by a first party publisher, or the IP is owed by Sony.

Darkfiber5066d ago

The game looks pretty cool, I'll admit, I was only pointing out that he not only got the name of the game wrong, but "Sorcer" isn't even a real word. And to think, these guys get PAID to write this stuff...

Christopher5066d ago

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers4d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken3d ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn6693d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle3d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long24d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197224d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic24d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 24d ago
DivineHand12524d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91324d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer24d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91323d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit23d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 23d ago
Christopher24d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6924d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit23d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher24d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken24d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197224d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic24d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2324d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218324d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder24d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
