E3: Space Marine 'is our Gears of War-killer' - THQ

I should make a indie game... how about a side scrolling beat em up where you play co-op with the 4 horse men of the apocalypse each with different feature sets.

War is the main character who seaks just destruction he can make enemies battle each other.
Pestilence, can weaken the enemies with a range attack that does damage over time.
Famine can weaken the enemies using which just means that they basically loose their armour
Death can call in a hoarde of enemies which swamp which ever enemy his curser is covering untill they are killed.

They have an area of effect where if they stand with X amount of each other their abilities are shared.

If War and death combine the undead horde does more damage and has more health
If War and femine stand with each other the enemies movement speed and attack speed is reduces.

If they all stand within a certain area of each other it's becomes very lethal. It's an open world RPG/Side scroller, where you fight in dungeons either alone or with friends online you can pick up loot thousands of items, designed for different purposes it gets really complicated and you can use money to buy stuff in towns etc.

I honestly think they stepped in some shit by saying that. But if they feel confident enough with their product, then more power to them.

Having to live up to the expectation of being a Gears of War killer or Halo killer or Call of Duty killer is usually never met. Saying this brings undue scrutiny a project just doesn't need. I suppose by drawing comparisons you get publicity for an unknown IP but it's a lofty claim seldom ever met.

I'd say that Warhammer 40k is probably a more popular IP than gears, but that may just be within the PC/tabletop community.

Yeah, Warhammer is well known and Gears actually probably draws a little inspiration from it. But Gears has evolved itself with each game its gameplay etc. etc., that Warhammer has its work cut out for it.

no... these guys are the " Real " space marines.. lol... I was reading Games Workshop magz about these guys long before I started to see the wannabies popping up in video games.

To be honest I am not a fan of any dev saying this is the killer of this game, it never ends well for them.

However, I have said loads of times how much I dislike gears 2 even though I loved gears 1 and to be frank I don't have much faith in gears 3 at all.

This however is something different and holds a lot of fond memories for me. They will really have to go out of their way to make it something special and even though I hate gears 2, it is still better then a lot of other games so they do have their work cut out for them. the great thing is they have a huge universe with a lot of history to draw from. lets hope they get it right.

WH40K was around ages ago and is huge influence on games. The Space Marines of the Imperium of Man has probably influence Gears and Star Craft to a certain degree, their armour, bulkiness and wargear for example.

As the space marines would say before a fight - "For the Emperor!"

Any time a company says their game is an "X" Killer, they've almost guaranteed themselves failure.

Only Crysis 2 has lived up (Sorta) to Crytek's boasting, and it still can't compare to either Halo or Killzone. Everything else. BOMBED.

I always Liked the Salamanders, but could not get the colours right so I ended up painting my whole set space wolf gray ( took the easy way out )..

Then I got a few Terminators, they were cool as hell.

Glad to hear it's still coming, this is a must buy. Space marines and WH40K are awesome! But gears killer? I take WH world before GeOW world, but still they need to be perfect to top it. GeOw3 is already bringing 4 player co-op, and new Beast-mode sounds even more fun than Horde.

THQ is a publisher, bro. They don't MAKE the game. It's being developed by Relic, and every game they've ever made has been good.

I doubt it'll be a Gears killer, though I don't particularly think there's much good left with Gears. Hopefully it'll be done after the third game. Sure, when the first came out, it brought lots of stuff to the table that virtually every game has ripped off since then, but the second was pretty much the same, and the third looks to be the same as well. Sure, a couple minor updates act as a fresh coat of paint for some people, but it's pretty much the same game over and over, and I don't think it's good enough, or the right style, to get away with it.

As for Space Marine, I don't think there's enough Warhammer fans to pump up the sales figures for the game to be considered as a Gears killer. It's good that they are using an existing IP to get fans to buy it, but in a way it hinders the game BECAUSE of that fact. If it was a new IP, it would get a whole new fanbase, but I'm sure there's millions of people ignoring this game simply because they aren't interested in Warhammer. However, the game is being done by Relic who is an amazing developer, and who knows the 40k universe better than any other developer around, so I'm sure this game will be good either way.
