2010: Game of the Year Contenders So Far

We’re nearly half way through 2010 so what better time to sit back and have another look at what the year has had to offer so far. With many big releases, each deserves its own re-examination before the hysteria of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this week, and its subsequent announcements overshadowing previous releases in the media’s attention.

But maybe Mario Galaxy will win it, considering the raving reviews it has gotten. It might not be 'hardcore' or 'original', but it might simply be the BEST and the most FUN. I don't know. I haven't played it yet.

Im a God of War fanboy so I want it to win. But Red Dead Redemption also deserve some serious recognition. So both.

God of War III for me. I really enjoyed RDR, but it just wasn't on par with the epicness of God of War.

I would say for now ME2. Bought it on Steam though. But teh console exclusivity...

We still have a lot of months left in the year though. So there's still a lot of games that could pop up and surprise us.

For me the best games this year that i have played are in this order:

1st: Red Dead Redemption and Darksiders.
2nd: God of War 3 and Mass Effect 2.
3rd: Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
4th: Alan Wake, BioShock 2, Blur and Split Second
5th: Heavy Rain
6th: Prince of Persia

Games i have not played: Super Mario Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2, ModNation Racers(tried the demo and did not like it), Bayonetta... among others.

I've played all of these except for No More Heroes and I have to say for me, God of War III is the best by far, though I wouldn't be too upset if Mass Effect 2 or Heavy Rain won.

Oh, that too. I still have my preorder for The Last Guardian...since it's on Amazon I got like $40 dollars off from so much $10 dollar credit build up. will be getting the game for $16 dollars now.

Really, how much have we actually seen of the game. Not enough for you to make any comments to that effect, thats for sure.

EDIT: Just wanted to say that from what I have seen, the game has promise, but there is no way you can say if it will be up there with the big games of next year (KZ3, GTA V, COD 8, Resistance 3 [I reckon it will get pushed to next year, this years already to crowded at the end], Red Faction 4, Rage, Motorstorm 3, InFamous 2, Deus Ex 3, Bodycount) for two reasons. 1: We don't know how TLG plays, and 2: We don't know how those other games play.

A short third person shooter with little replayability beyond the collectables... Alan Wake is a shooter, with good mechanics, and atmosphere but if you had to show off gamign what would you choose? Hence why I dislike the MW2 GOTY because it's lack of story. While MAss Effect 2 is a far better GOTY.

yakuza is an action rpg just like mass effect. what just caus it doesn't have generic monster battles its not an rpg? and last time i checked, fighting is a type of action so it can fall under that category.

ME2 is a TPS with RPG elements. ME1 would've been a better comparison and there already is a fighting genre so I think SSF4 would fall into that category, not the action one.

Sounds like you dont even know wha rpg means, cause the ppl in the media and abroad refer both ME and yakuza as rpgs . fighting games are still action games because they are a sub genre of action. sorry man but that is true. doesnt matter that the action is broken up by rounds, it's still beating the hell out of somebody. most ppl would agree but you're just out to spite me.

I'm not out to spite anybody. If fighting games are a sub-genre of action then so are hack-n-slash, shooters, adventure games with any type of combat, shootem ups, RTS, etc, etc. It would defeat the purpose of having multiple genres. And that part about people in the media and abroad considering those games as RPGs doesn't actually make them RPGs. Most people in the world think dolphins are a species of fish but they aren't so the opinions of the massed can't really be used as fact.

You're pretty obviously a fanboy man. MAG is simply not on the same level as Bad Company 2, even with all its faults. While I own and have enjoyed many hours of MAG'ing, the lack of content is a bit of a worry, and some of the existing maps need a redesign to parts.

Sure , battlefield is good, just more of the same. mag actually did something new by facilitating enough player count and implementing a briliant command system to create the feeling of a full scale war. and for that it deserves the shooter of the yeAr. and why call me a fanboy, did i bash anybody or anything in my comment?

I don't think we will get one single GOTY as last year. It is more likely that it will be different games, and i would guess that: GOW3, LBP2, RDR, Reach and ME2 will get at least one GOTY.

mass effect 2 is my goty. rpg fans wont like it due to the dumbed down rpg traits, but it retains the replay value and excellent dialogue of mass effect, while fixing the technical issues.

<<< Has been saying it since the week it came out. That Red Dead Redemption will take it this year. It has everything one could ask for and is damn epic to play. Very long single player which is typical Rocstar. Free DLC with it's online as well. If GOW3 had online, it would have been hard to beat. But once you beat it ( I did 3 times ). It becomes pointless. Any real games up for GOTY need online to back it. Something that will keep gamers playing that title for many months to come. The Years not over so we'll see if games like GT5 make it on the list as well.
