2010: Game of the Year Contenders So Far

We’re nearly half way through 2010 so what better time to sit back and have another look at what the year has had to offer so far. With many big releases, each deserves its own re-examination before the hysteria of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this week, and its subsequent announcements overshadowing previous releases in the media’s attention.

Where all the 360 exclusives? Oh wait.. At least you got Halo..

FangBlade5068d ago

God of War 3 IMO.

But ModNation Racers? really?

Yi-Long5068d ago

... Red Dead Redemption.

But maybe Mario Galaxy will win it, considering the raving reviews it has gotten. It might not be 'hardcore' or 'original', but it might simply be the BEST and the most FUN. I don't know. I haven't played it yet.

mantisimo5068d ago

Kinectipets will win hands down, you sillies x

sinncross5067d ago

I absolutely enjoyed GoW3: just finished it the other day.

Gamerbee5067d ago

Im a God of War fanboy so I want it to win. But Red Dead Redemption also deserve some serious recognition. So both.

God of War III for me. I really enjoyed RDR, but it just wasn't on par with the epicness of God of War.

Wrathman5067d ago

gow3 with graphics..but RDR left me saying..was it this year GOW3 was out?

it vanished so quickly.when was the last time a QTE game GOTY anyway?

ThanatosDMC5067d ago (Edited 5067d ago )

I would say for now ME2. Bought it on Steam though. But teh console exclusivity...

We still have a lot of months left in the year though. So there's still a lot of games that could pop up and surprise us.

lelo2play5067d ago (Edited 5067d ago )

For me the best games this year that i have played are in this order:

1st: Red Dead Redemption and Darksiders.
2nd: God of War 3 and Mass Effect 2.
3rd: Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
4th: Alan Wake, BioShock 2, Blur and Split Second
5th: Heavy Rain
6th: Prince of Persia

Games i have not played: Super Mario Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2, ModNation Racers(tried the demo and did not like it), Bayonetta... among others.

Nu-Magician5068d ago

god of war iii and super mario galaxy (especially) are looking good.

Voiceofsoi5068d ago

I've played all of these except for No More Heroes and I have to say for me, God of War III is the best by far, though I wouldn't be too upset if Mass Effect 2 or Heavy Rain won.

Newtype5068d ago

Probably might have 'under the rug' win from games in late 10'....my money is on The Last Guardian.

Tomdc5068d ago

my money is on the last guardian not even being released this year :P

Newtype5068d ago

Oh, that too. I still have my preorder for The Last Guardian...since it's on Amazon I got like $40 dollars off from so much $10 dollar credit build up. will be getting the game for $16 dollars now.

LeonSKennedy4Life5067d ago

If The Last Guardian released in 2010, no other game would stand a chance.

Tachyon_Nova5067d ago (Edited 5067d ago )

Really, how much have we actually seen of the game. Not enough for you to make any comments to that effect, thats for sure.

EDIT: Just wanted to say that from what I have seen, the game has promise, but there is no way you can say if it will be up there with the big games of next year (KZ3, GTA V, COD 8, Resistance 3 [I reckon it will get pushed to next year, this years already to crowded at the end], Red Faction 4, Rage, Motorstorm 3, InFamous 2, Deus Ex 3, Bodycount) for two reasons. 1: We don't know how TLG plays, and 2: We don't know how those other games play.

SimpleSlave23d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan23d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
