Alpha Protocol – Crush! Frag! Review!

Is a life of international conspiracy all it's cracked up to be? Crush! Frag! Destroy!'s Rob Thomas offers his take on Sega and Obsidian's recent super-spy RPG, Alpha Protocol:

"Who is Mike Thorton? A suave, sometimes sarcastic flirt? A focused professional who does the right thing, no matter the cost? An impatient, short-tempered, aggressive alpha-male? While this may sound a little bit schizophrenic, the answer is simple enough: he’s all of these things. As an operative with Alpha Protocol, a shadow agency that allows the government to conduct covert ops with full deniability, Mike Thorton is whatever kind of man you want him to be.

"But does Obsidian Entertainment’s super-spy RPG manage to shift personalities as effortlessly as its protagonist? Can Alpha Protocol overcome a glut of technical issues long enough for us to peel off the mask and see if the core game underneath is really worthwhile? That’s what we’re here today to find out."

Yeah, it is. It's a groundbreaking title, but falls into the holes it creates in doing so.

if you like Deus Ex you'll love this game if you hate skill based combat then you'll hate this game... it is really a love or hate

I tried this game out and I did not like it at all. It felt like it was rushed and they were using either a old engine or a engine they did not put a lot of work into. It is a shame because it was pushed back to "polish" the game and it just turns out to be crap.

Cueil-true true! I quite like this game and can overlook most of it's broken features as it's a lot of fun to play but my friend hates it and traded it in. But, then again, he also couldn't into Mass Effect or Dragon Age.....why does he buy RPG's...?

That's kind of how I felt about it. I enjoyed it a lot, but I just would have enjoyed it far more if it hadn't been so damn buggy and full of visual glitches. That's pretty much the only thing that kept me from pushing it up into "Recommended" territory. It's definitely a polarizing title. People either enjoy it and are forgiving of its issues or hate it with a passion.

Sega sells Relic and will cut 240 jobs across UK studios

GamesIndustry.biz writes: "Relic is best known for the Company of Heroes and Dawn of War games, and recently developed the new Age of Empires for Microsoft. Relic will transition to an independent studio and will no-longer be part of the Sega group of studios.

The majority of the 240 job cuts are across Creative Assembly and Sega Europe, while there will be a ‘small number’ cut from Sega HARDLight. There was no mention of other Sega UK studios, including Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive."

Shame about Creative Assembly, they should have just been allowed to do an Alien Isolation sequel.

just_looken47d ago

It was that garbage coh 3 that did them in only a special team can make a sequel worse in every way even though it was a 10 year gap and the same era.

gold_drake47d ago

I hope they find new jobs in the industry soon.

Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive probably run on a shoe string budget so that fits into SEGA better lol
