In the latest EGM issue Tomonobu Itagaki (Dead or Alive creator) gave his Top 5 worst fighting games in history. You'll be surprised how much he hates Tekken.

I believe he mentioned this in a previous interview that he was not a fan of the Tekken series.

I myself must admit that Tekken for me has gone downhill. The best Tekken game for me was Tekken 4. They tried something different, a down to earth story, a smaller character list, dynamic levels, and a design look that is still my favorite for the series.

Now though, Tekken is just a case of "who connects with their launcher first." The player loses 60-70% of their life every time they go up in the air. Tekken 4 had it's flaws but I do wish they would have gone in that direction, rather than the unending juggle fest we are seeing in todays Tekkens.

As for DOA, It gave a less technical veiw of the genre. Sort of a simplified Virtual Fighter, but other than gratuidous chest bounce it really doesn't do more than it's predicessors.

Not his fault. The Tekken franchise went into a downward spiral after Tekken Tag imo. The games didn't feel new anymore, the graphics weren't living up to it's predecessors, not enough new content. I love fighting games and one of my favorite franchises is DOA. Tekken didn't quite excite me after Tag.

exactly.he hates tekken since the psx era.I remember an interview with him when he was making the first DOA for the psx,saying that DOA is better than tekken because his characters' feet touches the ground while tekken characters' feet doesn't all the time so this is like really old news!the guy hates competition,especially from games which have proven to be more successful than his games :P

Personally i hate Street Fighter 4, i repeat hate, people disagree with you because they (like me) might like and love tekken, got tekken 6 platinumed it and continue to play it. Whilst street fighter, got it, played it returned it, i hate that game. But again people will disagree with me, as it is my opinion.

i managed to have a long session on tekken 6 on xbox for the first time yesterday and boy was i dissapointed.

apart from the eye bleeding graphics, the gameplay wasnt as polished and refined as some of the older better versions of the tekken franchise. the last good tekken for me was 4.

street fighter to me is a fast paced game of chess with so much strategy and skill involved it blows my mind. im an average player on it but i do understand the skill differences between me and those who whoop my butt online. in tekken people can kick my ass by just mashing the buttons!

Tekken 4 was the worse tekken everrrr!!!! ask any tekken fan who's good. And you will hear the same from the mouths of many. T4 was the downfall but T5DR balanced it back out. While I love T6 there are minor problems but over all. Its way more competitive than DOA. DOA is too simple. And not to brag but I platinumed T6 also lol. PSN ID is my username.

He's right though, they've ruined Tekken for the average gamer. It's all focused on lame juggle combos and stuff. However, it's not like DOA is a masterpiece either, it had a pretty noobish counter system for 2 games and still lacks the depth I hoped it would have by now.

For now I'm enjoying the heck out of SSFIV and BlazBlue. Anyone know if KOF XII is worth a buy?

KOF XII is only worth it if your not gonna play online... gameplay is solid. Probably more solid than SSF4 n BB even. But online is and always will be horrible since they still havnt fixed it. Im waiting for maximum impact. Now that was a good KOF converted into a 3d fighter

Itagaki doesn't own ninja gaiden IP. Tecmo does, and I believe that they are already developing it (there have been some heavy rumors floating around).

People keep saying Tekken has been going downhill since Tag Tournament, but I'd have to disagree. The only thing bad about 6 was the low quality of the campaign, the loading, and the online multiplayer. Everything else was great.

tekken 6 still got a problem imo . It is still the most refined and most balanced title yetof the serie ... yet somehow it is almost as boring as tekken 4 .

Why ? because the gameplay is getting stale . Now 90% of the time it's all juggle and bouncing combos .

As for itagaki , well at least his hatred is "logical" , many tekken (nd vf fans) , find DOA to be pure trash and one of the worst , despite a gorgeous realisation . I find doa's gameplay to be at the edge of powerstone/smash brash type brawlers , and anime fighting games ... except that those game are still fun , and got many advantages (like recreating a loved and known anime)

Wanting the gameplay mechanics of Tekken to change is like wanting the gameplay mechanics of Madden to change. I don't really see the problem seeing as how other long time fighting franchises like SF4 is far from different than it's predecessors gameplay wise.

its the same gme since tekken 3. the graphics r worse than SC4 which makes no sense since its the same devs and a newer game. also how to the newer characters have better animations and more fluidity yet characters like paul and jin are just as stiff as ever? easy they just copy paste characters.

Honestly I played quite a few Tekkens but I just can't seem to get into it. I mean the game has a great cast of interesting fighters the cutscences are great and so are the graphics but the story it tries to deliver needs to be done WAY BETTER. I mean the opening cutscences for this game at the arcades were epic but man just were the hell happened to all that when u played the game??

Also sometimes simplification isn't a bad thing. I mean my girlfriend and 2 other friends and I can hop on Dead or Alive 4 and tag team for hours. They ladies love it cuz they can just pick up and play. They enjoy the hell outta BlazBlue and Guilty Gear too. But throw in Tekken and I mean the pace and enjoyment slows down considerably. Even Super Street Fighter 4, as fun as it is to me, takes time to get used to and learn the button inputs. But eventually u do have fun pretty quickly.

But Tekken....I dunno man. Too slow for me. Combos are just a mess to do..If they made it faster and more simple more rewarding, gratifying and hell even more flasy I would love it.

Itagaki has consistently given harsh opinions on Namco's Tekken games, mainly due to his grudge against the company for its insulting radio commercial on his Dead or Alive game. I played DOA for 2 weekends back in the day. my brother broke the disc in half. It was too simple. Naruto and dragonball fighter had more depth.
