Two brief checkpoints in an alpha build. Unacceptable.

If it was on 360 you'd be switching out discs at those checkpoints with all of the detail in the environments.

I did see 3 checkpoints in a 20 second period, and the game stops completely at each one.

Looked more like load times, than checkpoints to me, but that's to be expected with those gorgeous textures, and high poly models.

Hopefully they can streamline this process. If not, this will be one average shooter. (shoot Mobs, move, load/checkpoint, repeat)

Gears of War was very short. I only played for maybe 15 minutes but watched people play in the dorm and they beat the game in like half a day. Hopeully Killzone 2 will be jam packed with plot and twist and turns and betrails and losses and unexpected gains and a f'ing crazy ending! that would be awesome!

But from my point of view, killzone 1's online experiance is what kept me playing it for so long. It was a nice break from playing socom. I rank it's online play 2nd to Socom 2 fromt the PS2 games I've played onine

maybe you missed what the guy said, or you missed the video. he said it uses a "first person cover" system. Vegas is a great game, and sports by far the best cover system I have used to date, but the thing is it kicks you into third person. killzone keeps you in first person, so your not able to see the whole room from behind cover :) I recommend watching the video.

@ below: I guess its just your recolection of vegas. in vegas when you take cover your thrown into third person, thus you can see the whole room while in cover, you can blind fire and line up your shot all in cover. you are kicked over the shoulder while peeking, giving you a nice wide field of vision.(or first person if you have a scope). where as killzone your never kicked into third person. so its not when you peak that your FoV is limited, but only while taking cover and not peaking out a side or over the top.

I feel while playing RB6:V online I often find myself nading the highly camped cover areas, because you cannot see them but they get a great view of the room (and you coming up). so for killzone's cover, this adds a layer of tension and realism in my book . I respect your tastes though.

But it bodes well for the fluidity of the cover system they have implemented thus far that you could barely tell the difference between this one and RB6:V. quite the compliment, as once again I will say Vegas is my favorite cover system to date.

now the idiots that really believe that there are actually things that surpassed the ps3, i am sorry to tell them that there are some factors that they have seriously forgotten, they base the power of ps3, and the performance off of the things written on paper, but the sad thing is is they dont know about some things on paper about ps3s specs that alone will still change gaming forever, pc fans, fake tech specialist, and other would be tech sites they forget one huge thing about the ps3, and its secrets, and its very serious, you see in the supercomputer world, they deal with floating point operations, people stand to really truly believe that floating point numbers mean nothing with graphics, your right though, they have nothing to do with gaming graphics, but for movie graphics, for sonys movie company, they use supercomputers, in the e3 2005 game conference, the cell was annouced, the performance was annouced as 2.18 tflops, and that the supercomputers at their movie studios move at just what 16 tflops, if you think thats bad, this is worse, sony uses the same cells to make their movies, now the only thing is, is that people know this, but they believe that the ps3 will not perform as good as the full supercomputers, but that is a horrible error, you see, supercomputers are the same no matter what power, but the thing is that because there is only one cell in the ps3, the workforce will have to be higher, and the budget will have to be enlarged more aswell, and time will be increased from an already giant number, and this is why we that know about the ps3 say that it has no end, movies are always looking better and better, because supercomputers have no end, as killzone with a workforce of only 120, and only been working on it for less than 2 years on the new ps3 hardware, all time that you say that is 3 years, were nothing more than preperations for the making of the game, not making the game on the ps3 hardware, because ps3 wasnt even in any form of a system back at e3 2005, the first actual build of a ps3 platform with incomplete hardware wasnt around til early 2006, so the game was being made from that point, and for making cg, on one cell at not half the fire power and horsepower to speed along development of cg, this game killzone looks fanominal, and is the best looking game ever period, the game is in movie ranks, you can say crysis, and call of duty, or glitches of ware look better than it all you want, but the thing is, until people see those games and are impressed on the scale of killzone, and are thinking is this ingame? no it cant be, which has never happened with either of these games that you have named, please dont say wild sh1t like things look better than killzone 2, say as many faults as you wish, but it wont change the fact that its the most impressive thing in a game ever, you may aswell say its a movie while your playing, and the ps3 isnt even close to the tip of its iceburg even at this level of game, say your not impressed or whatever you will, but how do we know your not impressed? how do we know your not just saying this to get us rowled up? which you are, but please with your comments, keep it real

compare Killzone to HALO? It's so retarded. Compare it to Gears of War if anything, it looks just like GOW. It has the same grayish brown graphics and they both use a cover system. I just don't see why people compare it to HALO. The only thing it has in common with HALO is that it's a FPS, that's it, there are thousands of FPS. The fire needs work too...just like Lair, the early builds had some pretty awful fire effects...

but please stop with this coming anywhere near gears...This game already has 3 times as much going on onscreen...The draw distance, reported real time weather changing effects...and hit detection...already make Gears look old...There are muddy textures yes...but the textures are already on par with Resistance...throw in the fact that KZ2 has physics incorporated even into the blood (in which pools will run downhill)...

and this isn't a Sony sided argument...COD4 already looks more impressive to me than Gears of War also...

The RSX can use some of the XDR main ram also...the Cell can only use the 256megs of server class XDR though...that results in a all kinds of people saying the 360 has "more" RAM...which is totally false...the 360 can simply allocate the 512MB of total RAM to either the GPU or CPU (but obviously not all of it to one or the other)...

but anyway...XDR is not cheap RAM...it would not be just $25 to add another 256meg chunk of it...however, had we not got a Blu Ray drive, that is exactly what we would have got I bet...

imo this i the biggest thing in the PS3 that goes against its future proof sales pitch...512MB of RAM is definitely a bottle-neck...had the PS3 had a gig or something, there would be no question that games would look better and better for years to come...which is probably still the case, but more wouldn't have hurt anything but the price...

It is pre-pre alpha...and the textures will be 100 percent better at release. Remember that are using streaming textures and they have up to 50 gigs of space to pool from.

In 6 months this game is going to blow away...its already pretty silky smooth...they will probably keep it at 720p but go 60 fps....

Thats what the dev team for killzone 2 said, that its pre pre alpha, so tell that to them, not to us. And if theyre spending more money than a dutch movie has ever costed, on this game, then I would bet that the gameplay is at least average, but probably a whole lot better. As long as it has solid gameplay, with great graphics then its fine to me. They said they would do beta testing though so we can play it before it comes out and judge a little bit more then.

This game looks amazing, the style reminds of Gears Of War alot, like the dark colors, and war torn everything, it's really cool. I like their choice of color palette. But I think and don't hang me for this people that COD4 was better looking to some people because it has a truer to life look. why is Fony having a fire sale just after 8 or 9 months. The Xbox 360 didn't have too many games out at first either but they held their ground and there still is no price drop going on 2 years now. They might have a price drop soon but I don't think they will need it once HALO ][][][ comes out. They won't be able to keep the 360 in stock come September 25th. I know a lot of people are arguing that there's no such thing as pre-alpha, but pre-alpha means that they're still working on the game engine and creating basic content for the game. I noticed that too, there is definatly one point in that video that he seams to get shot from behind. I wouldn't be surprised if it part of the difficulty system, i.e. Easy - No friendly fire Medium - Optional Hard - Friendly fire, and then it's down to the host for online games. Personally I like having friendly fire if the option is there, makes it more realistic, makes you think more carefully about your shot choice and when it comes to things like being part of a clan it mean you have to be careful, or you will not get respected or picked by your team members because you will be renown for being a clumsy shot. I personally can't wait to get into a FPS clan again, haven't been since back in the day with CS 1.6, and I have been waiting for a killer multiplayer to come back. Mayby UT3 or this could have a clan culture

Right now from what I see, it does not look better than COD4. The gameplay seems like another shooter, and thats my honest opinion. To call this game great, when it hasn't been played or seen in its final stages, is ludacris.

Oh my freakin god Guys I think Killzone 2 looks great and yeah the textures need some work but this is not Pre-Pre Alpha as I will now give you the stages of game development.

1. Concept ( Generally a Person or teams rough idea)

2. Actual Game idea ( Idea has been refined and Presented to a publisher in some form or another. This includes concept art, and story, Also research on various concepts in the game have been researched)

3. Pre-pre Alpha Building of the in game engine choosing physics engine and other stuff like that early tech demos and Beginning of audio assets begin here)

4. Pre- Alpha character models and game level desings gameplay mechanics are all in place graphic are still at low level generally no lighting, shadowing, low textures and things like that as it is generally the norm in the gaming industry to prefect gameplay before graphics and things are implemented

5. Alpha ( Most gameplay major assets in place and are being tweaked this is where the artists really get going and graphic prowess is added )

6. Beta (Graphical sheen is added this is really the polishing zone. If anything major isn't in now its not coming in at all. However vast amounts of small tweaks are added more so than any other time during development.

7. Gold (Finished Product all is done and developers go sleep for some time and then go check the sales charts)

In its current state Killzone 2 is at Mid to end stage alpha they will be in a beta build by September Because if Killzone 2 is still in pre-pre-alpha then what we all saw at E3 was a new mind reading device pulling concept gameplay out of guerilla developers heads. Also if it was still at that stage we won't be seeing Killzone till Christmas 2008.

What I'm saying is that with proper allocation of resources afforded by the huge amount of first party studio support SNE is providing and the sheer amount of brevity infused into the process -- isn't it possible that some of the mid-steps you outlined are looking better due to the high powered resources; and other things are still in need of attention to make the pre-pre-Alpha look the way it does now?

Lest we say that they're working from somewhat of an unprescedented platform because of these resources available to them? Maybe they are breaking the mold here (as far as traditional development) because this type of resourcing hasn't been seen before in our love of vid games. Just my thoughts and observations. As one of those that have been impressed by Killzone2 at E3 , the more i see or rather the more i see of the actual gameplay without any of the predefined animations playing out ,the less it's wowing me.Some 3 or 4 days ago i was saying that although it didn't reach the E3 2005 trailer standards(and it obviously doesn't),it was still a a very cool technical showing.The trouble that i'm seeing now however is that once you have taken away the hollywood scenes and get into the actual game ,it looks merely a well done shooter.Those interactive cutscenes are fantastic to watch but they wont be part of what unfolds in a purely random way.For K2 to be as exciting as it's trailer then what you have to remember is events need to take place in an environment that allows for the spontaneous.If K2 could match the intesity of the trailer purely by what it does as a game and not it's graphics ,then this would be unstoppable but if were talking about graphics alone then this is going to unfortunately end up as disapointing.Don't get me wrong though as i think it will turn out rather well.The last vid i saw was the one where he was powering down a generator beacon type thing and it was then i noticed things looking a little less stunning.

I'd like K2 to turn out as spectacular and i do rather like the franchise but further scrutinising shows it's direction may be questionable at this time.

Obviously you will now want to throw a ton of disagrees at me but the truth is that iv'e brought up something that does actually make a lot of sense and it i think entirely fair.

The developers claim that only a small amount of how destructible the environments will be has been shown yet...but, obviously, KZ2 has a long way to go before it gets anywhere comparable in that sense to Crysis...While Crysis so far looks to be the most photorealistic fps ever seen, I have not seen much of tha game where a whole lot is going on...a few fire fights with 3 or 4 guys shooting at you...a scene with a tank and a helicopter blowing through a shack...but other than that it is some guy aimlessly cutting down palm trees with his gun...or throwing a chicken across the entire map...

it is quite obvious though that KZ2, despite looking completely different, will not come close to Crysis on a technical basis...PC hardware simply has a bank of resources that neither console can touch...that is not saying all PCs will play that game well...its simply that a maxed out rig will do things that a console will never do...and Crysis is gearing to take advantage of that...

The bottom line is that it's still in pre-production and what we're seeing now are all "elements" of real/finished gameplay. If I'm interpreting your logic correctly it sounds like you might be expecting a VR perspective or "thinking" that that's what SNE owners want or think this game is and it's a bit off target if I may be so bold as to speak for the PSNAtion.

I do agree that it would be unfair at this time to judge.I guess what i'm really saying is the wonderfully chaotic nature of the 05 trailer was always hinting at what seemed to be a game driven by unscripted events.Clearly you got one cutscene at the start of the trailer as indeed you would too at the start of a level.The trailer then went on to show unscripted events playing out like the spectacular crashing of the flying vehicle for example and it was these events that made us swoon.If you do away with these however all you are left with is a game much like any other FPS.Potentialy K2 looked set to deliver something a little different in this regard and i find it unrealistic to think such design decisions will now be made.I have no doubt that K2 can be a very good game with solid gameplay and beautiful graphics.It's these designs choices above however that i can't see as being implemented this late in and already having seen what the game could be like ,it's a shame is all.
Most games by their nature are linear and you would expect that but much like Halo has already introduced the beginnings of this type of unscripting from it's events, K2 would also be to benefit if this went the same way.It.s far more likey you see that this is the exact same path Halo3 will have already expanded on.K2 will still be fab i'm sure but i'm lowering my expectations a little.For everyone else ,just expect a great continuation of the story and a most likely very well done game.

Reading most of these an I come to learn that a lot of people just bash these killzone trailers about everything cause... Halo 3 beta looked an felt like the halo 2 even most the maps are old revamps beefed a little.

Well guess what these are pre-alpha (Beta) trailers an game don't come out till 2008 so that means?

a) Graphics will look sharper
b) The save & load jumps from this video will be gone
c) They have more then enough time to clean up & fix any bugs

This game looks great. I just wish the enviroments isn't so bleak and gray which is the trend these days. Even CoD 4 looks totally gray and blurry-ish. Something bright and real like Crysis would've been nice. But this game still looks freaking awesome. Halo 2 just got owned thats for sure. KZ2 is the new king of the console world.

Actually your wrong concerning resources, and please don't get confused and compare dx10 with PS3. And this is where ps3 and 360 differ.

CELL is the reason for the difference, Basically cell&rsx create so much brute force, 2.15gflops.

DX10 IS A SPEED UPGRADE, The founder of DIRECTX, thinks its awful.

CELL with RSX could do any effect in either dx10,dx11,dx12 etc.

Because cell is not limited to directx.

COD4 for me looks very very nice, and i can't wait to see more.

I'm also looking forward to seeing UT, AND GEARS OF WAR(1920X1080P) on pc. I have 8800gtx sli. So no problem there.

But the kz2 demo was being played in easy mode, thats why he could stand there taking stupid amounts of fire, basically everything is dumbed down.

Theres along way to go, so i'm hoping for kz2 they up the textures, and add alittle normal mapping.

When the cell isn`t used for graphics?! The rsx in the Ps3 is Know it all! So yes, it`s not capable of direct X10!

This game is nothing special for people who have been gaming for more than 5 years. Pc has for over 5 years games with better graphics and gameplay with Battlefield 1942/ vietnam, BF2, Half life2, doome3, F.E.A.R etc. Even 360 surpassed this type of game, grafix and gameplay with COD2 on launch. The enemies in COD2 (2yr old game) were so much more intelligent. They threw nades at you and ran for cover if nades were thrown at them. These guys are like deer in the headlight, standing and firing on top of the players head as if they are seeing a giant godzilla. Anyway, they've plenty of time to iron out a huge lot of kinks, including bland textures/colors and enemy A.I.

I think you ps3 hardcore fans should seriously see beyond the hype of this game and not let in your feelings of sympathy towards it cloud your judgement. I mean its just a plain looking shooter, why are you going ga ga over it.

They showed it running right next to a PC running at the same resolution and frame rate and it was indistinguishable. The spoke person for Epic said they still got a couple months of development left. He almost hint the Epic will attempt to to replicate the same experience on the PS3 running at 1080p but of course it was more of a hint that they will try but no guarantees. Said the only thing PC had on the PS3 is more higher resolution choices. Course 1080p is plenty even for the DX10 world. Be awesome if Epic can unlock the hidden power of the PS3 and bring it in all its glory at 1080p at a decent frame rate.

This game looks amazing. Yes, its dark, yes there are loading breaks (cmon, Guerilla, use that HUGE hard drive that comes with the PS3) Isn't that what its there for?

Regardless, this game looks better than any game on any console at the moment.

If Killzone 2 proves to be more than just eye candy, it could push me purchase a PS3 at some point in the future. I may have to start saving soon!

it looks great to me. Granted the game could have better textures, explosions, flame-effects, and animations, but the game is not due until 2008. This is also a game video played in real time and not a trailer where they removed the stuff that wasn`t all that good.

What`s going to be interesting for myself, is seeing the progress they`ve made with the gameplay, which i`m not sure if they`ve improved enough. Can`t wait for preview or Beta though, as it will be very interesting to hear (or well, read i guess hehe)
