Many games see similar kinds of scores. Uncharted Drake's Fortune, one of my favorite games of all time, is one that springs to mind.

well if you look at the history of movie taste and critics from europe compared to usa, you will very fastly see a difference.

i wont say america is more fond of testosterone roughnecks with tough voices and catchy lines. but its true...

anyway, alanwake is a game you should try for yourself, all those reviews only point into one direction. It`s a game that splits opinions, therfore you just cant break it down to a percentage score.

i love the story sofar, the book will be one of the first game books i will ever touch (normally its just to nerdy), and i totally dig the twin peaks style of presentation.

I agree with everything you said mostly, except:

Actually most of the reviews are NOT split, yes there are a few scores below 8 but the vast majority are actually above 8 and almost every site gives a value of 8 or more to a game that is really good= the site recommends you should play it. A "split" normally means alot of high and low scores, or sort of mix bag of all sorts of scores from very low all the way to very high. Also even the few reviews which scored it lower than average, they generally thought it was a good game but were dissapointed with 1 or 2 aspects that hurt the overall games experience but even then they still really liked the game.

i didnt meant mixed opinion in case if its good of not, high or low scores.It IS good no discussion here, i cant wait to get my hands on it tomorrow.

What i meant though is a split opinion if the game is a blockbuster or not. For me personaly its too much mumbo jumbo at the moment (means to many people rubbing theyre crystal balls and mixing voodoo drinks).

People are way to much on the fence dicussing the quality of the game,personaly i think this situation is totally immature. Im gaming for 25 years now and never experience such a situation where "gamers" have nothing better to do than to pick a side (there are none btw) and defend it to the bone.

one example to the fanboys that might get you thinking.

Would you ever go so far and say i only watch warner brothers movies ???

if you want to be agamer with at least a bit maturity, play alan wake for youre own (im not saying buy all consoles some cant afford it)
but at least get to your rent store get a 360 unit and to play it, best of course would be if you buy it. Remedy deserves it.

Ghoul, great post. I wish there were more gamers like you around here. Alan Wake has definitely piqued my interest. Well actually more than that; I am very much looking forward to playing it. And yes, I will buy it. I think a good single player game should be rewarded with a purchase. Not every game needs to have multiplayer.

The vehicles certainly felt Halo-esque. But to me, District 9 was more Halo. Then again, that movie was supposed to be the Halo movie in the first place :P

District 9 is more like Halo relation wise with the two groups but Avatar vehicle wise, and exploration with future marines yet still familiar, is hands down Halo

to see how differently the US and European markets are receiving Alan Wake.

the game actually does have a bit of a BBC look/feel to it.

i'm from the US, and i love a good story, whether in a game, movie, or book. i also love a completely irreverent, ridiculous story (think the movie Shoot Em Up. it's absolutely absurd, but it's highly entertaining when you take the movie for what it is; a sort of send up of over the top action movies).

it seems the America market/media are really, REALLY obsessed with shooters and MP.

games like Heavy Rain and Alan Wake, which "dare" to try and approach gaming from a different perspective than "point gun...shoot...dlc...?...um, profit?"

i've been itching for a game that, at the least, will draw me in like Silent Hill 2 did, and AW actually looks like it's taken it's cues from shows like Twin Peaks, and games like SH2.

the industry needs to be shaken out of it's apathy and rigid thinking of what a game should be. us gamers need it too. while it's never been my favorite genre, i can say that more than ever, i am fricking SICK of shooters. you have no idea how satisfying it was to play God of War 3 and Demon's Souls when they hit. i can't stop playing them and i'm dying to get my hands on 3D Dot Game Heroes because of it's non-shooter focus.

i'm looking forward to AW, that's for sure, and i really hope games like HR and AW succeed, if anything than to prove to publishers that you don't have to copycat an overplayed genre to make it, and gamers are PERFECTLY capable of absorbing different game play types and experiences.

I cant afford 2 games (since they come out in the USA at the same time), time or $$ wise.. RDR has replay value, AW was a must buy not its a rental. In 10hrs you will be done and have little incentive to play it again, BUT someone said there is gonna be free DLC and a lot of it.. When I see this in a linky, I may change my mind to buy AW..
