There was a time when the gurus at Squaresoft could do no wrong – when a band of the industry's most talented game designers, artists, and composers would unite to create role playing games the likes of which other companies couldn't possibly fathom, and do it with a style and panache all their own. When men like Nomura, Amano, and Uematsu spoke, Final Fantasy fans listened. Today, however, the distinguishing features that once made the Final Fantasy series a staple of greatness – world exploration, story, musical score and minigames – are gone, and what gamers have received in their stead is a point A to point B dredge completely devoid of the charm that made titles like Final Fantasy VII and X mainstays of every gamers' library. Over the past fifteen years Square's premier franchise was the apex of the Japanese RPG world, but no longer. That distinction has instead been commended upon a somewhat lesser-known franchise known as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona.
A new SEGA / Atlus Switch eShop sale started up this week, which includes the lowest prices ever for various games including Persona 3 Portable, Sonic Origins Plus, and more.
The studio was on the verge of collapse when Persona 3 came out, and things were looking quite grim for Atlus. Regardless, many decisions made in the game paid off and became a staggering success.
Years ago, I was emulating the game on my laptop and the old thing died when I was about to get to the final boss. I'm more than happy to buy this remake when it comes out so I can finish it!
At the time I was immersed in SMT Nocturne and later DDS. I did not realize at all how important Persona would become for me years later.
Persona 3 FES was the first one that I played in the series. Looking forward to the remake.
Atlus has announced a collaboration with a well-known Japanese distillery to launch the Persona series' very own whiskey, releasing tomorrow.
I'll have to make this a mission the next time I blow through Tokyo.
Hopefully soon, given the limited availability.
Amen.
I've never played any of the games in the Persona series, but I've only ever heard good things about it. I'd try out Persona 4 but my PS2 is on its last legs really. If a Persona 5 releases for the PS3 then I'll definietly try it out.
Persona really hasn't been around long enough to be comparable to Final Fantasy. Really, only Dragon Quest has.
And to be fair, there are only 4 Persona games. Not enough variety, really, to tell in the grand scheme of things.
Nobody really needs to steal FF's crown, latey it's almost as if SquareEnix is trying to give that crown away. Another thing, if Bethesda comes out with another fantastic RPG, they're one step closer to taking it for themselves.
