Kojima to kill Snake?

GameDot writes: "While only speculation on my behalf, it is one of many possible outcomes that can be drawn from some recent information posted by the man himself Hideo Kojima over on his twitter account. Saying "My next project will challenge a certain industry taboo." While some speculate the next MGS will contain a steamy sex scene, I found the use of 'industry taboo', and 'not game taboo' an interesting choice of words. As nothing would be more taboo in the gaming industry than killing off a character that has earned your company millions. So what could possibly give this possibility weight?" Read on.

I don't think I could take Snake actually dying, obviously he has to die (given how life works and the events of MGS4) but I don't think I could deal with that presented on screen, on an emotional level, after the countless hours and years with the characters.

Kingdom Come5146d ago

That's the sign of a great Developer. There are a number of games were I have got Emotionally attached to characters having spent so many hours through there perspective.

Batzi5146d ago

hours??? Dude we spent years, long years following Snake's story, more than a decade as far as I am concerned and for some for more than 20 years. He's like our fictional brother, someone to care about. No Metal Gear fan will accept the death of Snake in any way, mark my words.

blitz06235146d ago

Snake? Are you there? Snake? Snaaaaaaaaaake!!!

Raf1k15146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

Snake being killed off would make one of the most memorable games ever but could Kojima make new character who was as good?

edit: Killing him off doesn't necessarily mean the end of Snake in the Metal Gear franchise. There's always room for prequals.

Dark General5146d ago

If you ask me Snake should have died at the end of 4.

Dark General5146d ago

"The story of legends", in that sense you are correct. Immortal legends on the other hand, no. I don't know why but I always liked the idea of the hero having this grand bowing to wrap up their legacy. It's usually not a matter of how they died but the legacy they left behind during their life.

Besides look at The Boss. Her death is how legends are supposed to end in my opinion.

I totally agree. SPOILERS FOR MGS4

He really should have killed himself at the unmarked grave. It would have made for a far more emotional and impactful ending. Snake going through hell and back to save the world one more time, full well knowing that he won't live long to see the world he tried so hard to protect. Even still he does it because that's the hero he is. And then bam, one last thing to do to ensure the world's safety.

Gun in mouth, a pause, maybe a tear, then screen goes black, you hear breathing, then one gunshot. Metal Gear Solid 4 title appears, The End of a Legend. Short and bitter sweet.

Whitefox7895146d ago

Got one thing to say about that.

"Old Soliders Never Die"

infamousinfolite5146d ago

At firelogic actually there is no reason for him to have killed himself at the grave because he knows that the foxdie inside of him is being killed off by the new foxdie that was put in him by drebin. It's amazing in a way drebin helped save solid from killing everyone else and helped save solid from killing himself. That pivotal point in the game where Drebin sticks a needle in snakes neck means snake can die with choosing to die by his own hand. Eventually snake will die. It's how his cycle goes.

shadow27975146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

If Snake had died, there would have been no mammoth of a plot twist. And that moment sticks out for me the most as being incredibly memorable. In a few years I may not remember all the intricacies about nanomachines, or who betrayed who, but I will always remember standing up and pointing at the TV screen with my mouth hanging open. I may have also screamed and stammered, my mind was all over the place by that point.

And then I got to relive it when I watched my friend finish the game and he had a very similar reaction. That moment was brilliant and completely worth the ambiguous situation it left Snake in.

Anyway... this article seems to be grasping at straws. I don't think his tweet had anything to do with MGS, but rather a new IP. But even if it is MGS, killing off a character is hardly taboo. It's more taboo to change genres (Rising, Acid) than to kill off a character. Kojima's not killing Snake. We probably won't even see Old Snake again. His story is over.

cmrbe5146d ago

Nah i don't agree with that ending.

1. Its too violent and short of an ending which contrast with the optimism of the fall of the patriots in the epilog.

2. That would have been a very tragic and brutal end to a much loved character that it won't make sense. As infamousinfolite mentioned. There is no point for him to take his life.

3. That sort of tragic ending is too similar to MGS3.

MGS4 i always knew should have a happy ending. It would have been clich'e if Snake died to save the world.

If anyone deserves a break it is snake. I am happy if he just spends the last few years enjoying a hard earned rest and passes away quietly.

Dark General5146d ago

I agree with you firelogic that would have been a great closing for snakes life. As much as he doesn't think much of himself he still continues to do right by what was best for humanity which really sets him apart from his brothers (except solidus in a strange way) and his dad.

Also if I remember correctly before the big reveal at the end Snake would have had to live by himself or something like that because of the disease. I think offing himself for the greater good would have been a more fitting end than living his last days as a everyman. As shadow said either way that's probably the end of Solid Snake as we know it. It was awesome X to see Big Boss not miss a step disarming Snake like the badass he was.

Darkstorn5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

Snake? SNAKE!? SNAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!!???

EDIT: Ah, 1.3 got to it first. Next time, I'll read all the comments...

infamousinfolite5146d ago

You know what Kojima should do is like make a DLC for MGS4 and the content will be available for you to see once you finish MGS4 and at the end if says (how many months/years later) then you hear i guess have otacon shout snake three times like he normally does during the game and then it shows a funeral and otacon is giving the speech about Solid Snake and the life he went through. Then he'll say let us take a moment remember all the snake has went through. And you see the 'X' icon on the same right corner as before then like while you are pressing the button repeatedly, I guess some of the MGS series best songs come on as you flip through some of the good moments and getting nostalgic.

Liquid_Ocelot5146d ago

I've beaten MGS4 5 times. I've cried 4 out of those 5 at the end. It always 'get me'. But the truth is that NO game will ever make me feel the way MGS4 did and til this day still does.

That part where Snake gets his whole body checked by Naomi(specially when she asks to Snake what has happened to him *camera points to a mirror revealing Snakes back*), to the part where Snake gets to Shadow Moses(I got goose bumps and watery eyes on both of these parts).
The Microwave room(I was speechless... This part changed my life, I will never forget that day where I walked Snake through that room) part was the one that made me cry, something that NO other game has ever done, to the 'last fight' that was PURE EPIC!! With the music themes from each game and the health bars and 'his' personality changing along with these to the sickest and most emotional ending in a videogame ever *personally* ...I, I am proud to be a MGS fan.

**Spoilers End**

If Kojima-san decides to kill Snake, I expect nothing but the most emotional moment in videogame history, NOTHING, AND I MEAN NOTHING WILL EVER COME CLOSE TO IT!!
I don't care what your favorite game might be, nothing will top Snakes death, PERIOD.

infamousinfolite5146d ago

Snake's Death will end the console war as we know it.

PotNoodle5145d ago

I think the message to snake given to him at the end by a certain someone, telling him to live out of the rest his life, enjoy it for once was one i'm sure fans, if they thought about it, appreciated.

RadientFlux5145d ago

I agree with @Dark General

MGS4 should have been the end of Snake. It would have given the game a more powerful ending.

ThanatosDMC5144d ago

I want more Naked Snake story... you know, Big Boss.

if Snake dies, Metal Gear dies along with it and there will be no use for Kojima anymore :@ Kojima better not screw it up.

kraze075145d ago

Kojima still has to give us a ZOE 3 before he retires.

George Sears5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

We don't need another game that follows (Solid) Snakes story. He already did and accomplished his goals, to speculate on what happens at the end of the game is nothing but the upmost obvious of conclusions .Creating some twisted excuse just to bring him back in action would fack up his farewell.

As for Big Boss, making more games about him kills his enigmatic status. Although I am excited about Peace Walker, I feel as he shouldn't be mingling with the past and start creating different IPs.

PirateThom5146d ago

I dunno, I like the retconned Big Boss.

What I would like to see is Kojima maybe picking up on the alternative history (the Ghost Bable > Ac!d line) and making something completely ridiculous in that narrative, but that's wishful thinking at best.

sikbeta5146d ago

Something I really want to see/Play is a Direct MGS2 sequel in which you play with the legend and that's all I need...

morganfell5145d ago

I have to side with Solidus on this one. Thought Metal Gear Solid 3 ranks second in the greatest game (only MGS4 is above it) I think it should be left alone. That said, I do think Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, and Metal Gear Solid could do with an updated version.

morganfell5143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

I would like to play the Boss as she leads the Cobra unit and then years later sees young John as he trains to become Naked Snake.

sam fisher kills snake.he hangs him with his own girly hairband.makes it look like an accident 2.coroner concludes that he died from an overly tight cat-suit worn while doin an impression of beyonce's all the ladies

DigitalHorror815146d ago

Says the guy (Girl?) with no avatar.

The Iron Sheik5146d ago

Snake has been saving the world in video games since before you were swimming around in your dad's balls. Sam Fisher is but a mere pimple on Snake's octocamo clad ass.

cmrbe5146d ago

the f*ck is Sam fisher?.

Genki5146d ago

Since when was killing the protagonist taboo? Happens ALL the time.

If a game, or any media franchise, for that matter, is truly great, it stands on the merits of the sum of all it's parts. No single character, set-piece, or symbol should dominate a game so much that the game relies on or is defined by it.

Why do you think Warcraft has been going so strong? The majority of the characters have been killed off. Star Trek, as much as I hate it, is another example.

A Matter Of Trust: What The Game Industry Should Do To Win Gamers Back

Skewed and Reviewed have written an Opinion Piece covering issues in the gaming industry, how current issues were issues years ago, and what can be done to help restore consumer trust.

anast5d ago

Nothing. It's up to the gamers to stop consuming content from companies that they don't agree with.

Garethvk4d ago

How do you know if you agree with it or not unless you play it? Which without conventions forces gamers to rely on trailers. Perhaps Demos should be made more frequently. But companies need to do better as well.

anast4d ago

Wait until release. Watch Gameplay. Exercise patience.

Garethvk4d ago

But is that not what they have now? Tons of gameplay or are you talking about watching actual gamers play it versus the trailers and streams? The big issue is that some companies pay streamers and influencers and they create content but for me; that is hardly a fair, unbiased, and factual look at a game.

1nsomniac4d ago

Get rid of the suits in the industry and job done!!

Garethvk4d ago

They usually are attached to the money sadly. It would be nice to have gamers in charge but you have so much money invested that business people are needed. Hence the issue; you need people who know business but are also gamers who know have an eye to the community. It sounds simple in theory that if you give gamers quality games that they want to play; money will be made. But that is not always so.
