The Truth About 3D HDTV's

It seems every few years now, a new innovation is being added to HDTV's. Whether it be 60 and 120 Hz refresh rates or LED back lighting technology, HDTV manufacturers will always find a new way to bring in consumers. Their latest, and possibly greatest technique of attracting customers is the promise of 3D HDTV. Along with this, Facebook and Twitter integration is now found in most new television lines from major manufacturers. What consumers don't know, is...

I understand that a TV with a 120 HZ refresh rate can display 3D images when coupled with the right hardware and software. But from what I've read some of the more expensive 3D TV's have built-in processors that can display 2D pictures and movies in 3D as well.

http://www.samsung.com/us/l...

Samsung advertises it at the bottom of their learning resources page.

Catch 2D in 3D.

"Samsung's built-in 3D processor is so powerful it can convert 2D (normal) movies and photos to 3D in real-time with the push of a button."

i think i'll stick to my 2D HD TV
since i just got it
i finally made my shift to HD last october
and now playing on full 1080P with an HDMI hooked up
and im loving it the way it is

Anon19745156d ago

And there's a bunch of 3D channels waiting in the wings. Discovery, ESPN, DirectTV is rumored to be getting their 3d channels all line up for launch this year. The world cup will be broadcast in 3D this June.

Did this guy even bother to do any research into this before he wrote the article? Sure, the 3D content might be a little slim at first, but color TV content was also hard to come buy when color was introduced to TV's. Same with HD content initially. You really think the early adopters believe everything's going to be in 3D overnight?

sikbeta5155d ago

Europe and Asia will Jump into the 3D-Tech Thanks to the FIFA World Cup and I think that here in America, Movies and Such will Help the "standardization", so keep moving as tech keep evolving...

Kakkoii5155d ago

Converting 2D images to 3D images doesn't work very well. It's a bit of a gimmick, at least compared to real 3D image shots.

MAR-TYR-DOM5155d ago

3D tech is cool and all, but i dont care right now. It took 5 years for HD to become mainstream, it will take that and more for 3d to become mainstream.

jeseth5155d ago

Most everyone has upgraded their TVs to HDTVs within the last 4 years. Now these companies expect consumers so re-up and spend another few grand for 3D.

Sorry. I, and many others aren't interested. We all bought expensive TVs to last...not to be thrown away a couple years later.

I think it will take a long time to catch on . . . if it does. This is more of a risk than Blu Ray was.

Darkstorn5155d ago

Tube TVs are going to be around for a long time to come. They're more reliable, affordable, and accessible than HDTVs.
I'm trying to play through GoW III on my 27" SDTV and I can't read the text for my life. Game developers shouldn't leave half their customers behind by neglecting us SD users.

on the psn wtf are you talking about

Fat Onion5156d ago

I don't know about anyone else, but when I went to go see Avatar it made my head and eye balls hurt. I could not imagine watching tv and playing video games in 3D on a continual basis.

frjoethesecond5156d ago

It doesn't hurt once you get used to it. It was painful for me the first time but got better. Like sex for a woman lol.

Godmars2905156d ago

Meaning that while Hollywood is on this asinine kick to both revitalize interest, exploit and milk 3D, then a small percentage of the viewing public is screwed.

ironmonkey5156d ago

yea well avatar 3d is the reason why it was sold out for weeks cause of 3d. people had to book tickets ahead of time cause people wanted to see it in 3d instead of regular 2d. another reason of why it grossed so much money but also because it was a james cameron movie.

Chaostar5156d ago

Some people aren't tall enough to go on roller coasters... whats your point?

Should the rest of us miss out on 3D because a small % of people can't handle it?

3D like any technological advancement is NOT mandatory, if it hurts don't do it.

ReBurn5156d ago

I'll reserve my comments on what's mandatory and what isn't. It isn't always a choice. How many SDTV's do you see in stores these days? How many VCR's? Cassette players? Technology only moves forward, so you either have to keep up or get left behind.

If by some weird turn of events everything happens to go 3D then the only choice for some people would be to live with the pain or stop watching.

Chaostar5156d ago

Theres no need for SDTVs because HDTVs still diplay SD content just like 3D tvs will always have the option of viewing in 2D. Different mediums have come and gone because its what people wanted, higher definition more music on a disc etc, as long as there is demand for a service there will be a product that will fill it.

As for all content going 3D well we both know thats just silly but even in that event they would still be available in 2D if there was a demand for it. My point is that no technology has ever left anyone behind, people can still use VHS if they want it's a choice, freedom dude, the people choose their format.

Mr.Mister5156d ago

nice i want it to come out.
why?
because all the price oh the regular 2d tv will go down
i wont buy 3d until the make it really good(without glasses good)
imagine if you bring your friend home and want to show them 3d tv and only got one pair.
beside if many people watch tv , you have to be on the right spot or else the experience suffer
so not for me

Proxy5156d ago

I saw the claim in the article that 3D methods that don't require glasses are being developed, but how is that possible?

Qui-Gon Jim5156d ago

The glasses-free system uses lenticular screens. Alternating columns of the image are meant for each eye, then it uses a method to limit the angles that those images can be seen from so that each eye only sees the intended image. They require you to be looking at the screen from certain angles (which will work fine for the 3DS, which is rumored to use this method) and they reduce the resolution of the image by half since each eye only gets half of the frame's pixels.

info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

siliticx5156d ago

and that kind of 3D is giving headaches to a very big % of people.

Kakkoii5155d ago

@Qui-Gon Jim:

That's only 1 of the ways.

HoloVizio created a better and more interesting one. That actually has multiple viewing angles also, so you could have movies with more than with like 8 angles, instead of just 2 for the main 3D image.

http://www.holografika.com/

http://gizmodo.com/5014980/...

It looks really promising.

randomwiz5155d ago (Edited 5155d ago )

Yeah, thats true. I once saw a 32 inch tv with that tech last year, and it felt like my brain was being pulled out through my eyes. But that was old tech. Hopefully the 3DS uses new and improved tech that doesn't hurt.

Microsoft's quest for short-term $$$ is doing long-term damage to Windows, Surface, Xbox, and beyond

Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.

"The plan to move Xbox games to other platforms is codenamed "Latitude" internally, and I know there's debate and unease at Microsoft about whether or not this is a good idea. More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's mandate to increase every department's margins. "

Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware.

Xeofate15h ago

"Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware."

It's for the best.

Quit stringing along xbox fans and screwing over PlayStation owners.

crazyCoconuts11h ago

Take good care of those Xboxes if you have 'em ...

outsider162411h ago

An Xbox game on a Playstation. Never in my years of gaming did i ever thought this was gonna happen.

jznrpg6h ago

It is dying anyway so doesn’t make much of a difference

VersusDMC6h ago

No way can they get rid of the hardware as probably 90% of game pass subscribers are hardware users.

Highly doubtful those users will move to PC or Cloud to subscribe there and the competition (Sony and Nin) will never have gamepass on their system.

If they want to keep the current subscribers, they need to keep releasing new hardware.

i think it will kill off the xbox brand. windows will be fine.

but there is and would be a chance that xbox might be killed off in the future. if they fail to make the money they put in. imo.

S2Killinit14h ago

They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

PRIMORDUS11h ago

It would be best if Xbox goes the way of Sega, just make and publish games. I know I myself will not support them at all with buying games from them, you all can. 🙃

ChasterMies10h ago

The Xbox brand will live for the games. I don’t expect Microsoft to entirely drop out of gaming hardware. They make Surface tablets and laptops. They’ll make Xbox branded hardware for those that want it.

shadowT16h ago

"Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation"

Forza and Starfield next?

Skuletor15h ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

shinoff218315h ago

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.

-Foxtrot16h ago

In the words of Phil Spencer when he was talking about Nintendo last year

“It's just taking a long time for Microsoft to see that their future exists off of their own hardware"

S2Killinit14h ago

Yup. MS are a cancer to console gaming.

Aloymetal14h ago

100%!!
I wonder what happened to that dude that was always here posting those court articles with cartoons about MS spending all those billions in studios. He suddenly disappeared, I guess he doesn't like bad news when the green brand is in trouble. No new articles from him as of late...

PRIMORDUS11h ago

Yup, and it's only going to keep spreading.
