X360 vs. PS3 Multiformat Face-Off, Round Three

Once again Eurogamer bravely ventures into the no-man's-land of cross-platform games development with the latest in thier ongoing PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360 features.

The objectives here are very straightforward. Due to the way that code is distributed by the publishers, Eurogamer tends to review the Xbox 360 games first, so the main aim is to play 'catch-up' and provide additional platform-specific commentary where appropriate. Eurogamer is interested in any gameplay differences, along with peripheral or feature support exclusive to a particular console. But additionally, they are also keen on charting the progress of cross-format development more generally, so they also provide technical observations and comparison shots that highlight the similarities and differences between the various versions.

How can you compare exclusives?
Which looks better NG or GOW? Most won't be able to tell you. When you compare exclusives there are too many variables to be conclusives. For example, anytime you chime that FF13 looks better than anything on 360, someone can always say...What would it look like on 360? Would it look better or worse? What would GOW had looke dlike on xbox? You need to comapre multiplat games. After all you are trying to see which console looks best. If you were trying to see which car is fastest from 0 -60. You would run them on the same track. You wouldn't have one on a 1/4 drag track and another on curved track. You need a constant to make sure the comparisom is equal.

I read these sometimes just simply to see technical differences...Where as I rarely buy multiplatform games anyway (just because most are not very "good" games...R6 Vegas and The Darkness are two recent acceptions)...there is no reason for d'bags to fight about it, but I guess its inevitable...

this one is rather well put together...unlike gamespots "you decide" mentality that results in poop flying everywhere...

Interestingly though they claim the PS3's OS in game footprint to be roughly 35MB worth of RAM...hardly...The PS3 launched while using nearly 90 precious megs of the XDR RAM...and 1.70 firmware update pushed that down to just under 60MB...While the 360 has been around 32MB since launch...Sony claims to be further addressing the OS requirements, but their blog mentioned that 1.80 "had no OS optimization included"...I would bet that this is a huge reason for no in game XMB yet...once they get the footprint down considerably more is when we will see that stuff...as long as that doesn't bump it back up to 90MB or something...

that right now is hands down the biggest problem between the PS3 and 360...and aside from the difficulty for coding the PS3; is why where such drastic problems with multiplatform games...this review at least points out that more recent games are much closer, and in some areas better, than the early attempts...

The PS3 does not use 60 or 90 megs. That is the amount they have set aside for the OS. It uses about a third of that at present.
Developers do not have access to that portion, and have always known this. Adding features to the OS is simple, as it does not need to take away anything from the devs`/ games.

The 360 uses 32 megs, and makes everything else available for devs / games. How do you think they would add any new features that might require additional memory without making existing games run like cr@p?
They painted themselves into a corner and are stuck there, while the PS3 has an additional 30 to 60 megs available to it without affecting the games at all.

However that hit on memory is still there...around February was when Sony dropped blocked RAM from 92 to 84...while using 52 megs of XDR, and 32 of GDDR3...and I read their developer interview blog wrong, they were talking about the OS with full xmb access taking up nearly all of what they have blocked at this point, but are still working to optimize the OS further...and possibly allowing more blocked RAM to developers in the future...

My point is the same however...Developers do not have access to as much memory as they do with the 360...which is partly responsible for why some of the multiplatform games dont' stand up as well...but things are obviously getting better...and I much prefer the growth of the PS3's operating system to hits on some multi games...

That, or maybe there is plenty of RAM available for the OS to expand and you don't know a single thing about computer architecture. you know what do not make sence ? is to compare a port to the orginal game.this days all the games made in the 360 ported to the ps3.and if they are made by two diffrent teams than they are made by diffrent talent but with limitation ,since publisher do not want to pis* of sony or microsoft by making one copy significantly better , yoou should not compare them. when you compare exculsive than you compare them in term of : graphic, sound , gameplay ............ there is 100s of way to compare them , so overall you are not comparing the games but what the mechaine can deliver in that respect if the game take full advantage of it, in that way you know what mechine is better, and multi-platforms do not do that..you get what i mean .....

You just can't say Ps3 has gameX and 360 has gameY. What it the point in comparing the 2? The other console will never have that game. You need to compare how a single game to show which game is better.
For example, NGS runs @ 60 FPS @ 1080p. It looks good but not great. How do you compare this to a great looking 360 game that runs @ 30FPS?

When you compare exclusives, everything you said is the same. When you are talking exclusives, 2 completely different teams, companies and artstyles are used.

I'm sorry, but if your were to pull up reviews of ps2 vs xbox games, they have always said that there was no comparison. That the xbox version was considerably better visually. No question about that. Unfortunately that can't be said about the ps3 vs 360. You shouldn't try to mislead people like that. At least be honest with yourself before you make up claims. If the ps3 is your console of choice than so be it. But don't take away from the competition if they noticeably do something better. And this thread does help those with both consoles, this story was actually better than most comparison stories. They even admitted to tryin to give the ps3 an edge right off the bat, but were disappointed with some of the Multiplat games results.

Yo Wargasm, When the original XBOX was released it was essentially a pc in a console box, so you see, even though the XBOX was released a year later it really didn't suffer the effects of being something that was foreign to develop for. Development wise it benefited from developers knowledge of programming for the pc. I don't understand why people overlook this obvious fact. The same can be said about the 360. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. In fact, many developers have gone on to praise MS for doing this. I know people hate to compare multiplatform games. But how else can you tell which console is better(assuming you care to know in order to know which one to buy; and you can't afford both). How can one compare let's say Lair with any xbox 360 game... or Gears to a PS3 game? Some games are designed to look in a certain way, theme colors, controls, game play that just can be compared to other games. For example, a game like Forza(X360) being compared to GT(PS3). How can two games designed with two different goals and with a complete set of feature be compared? One must say, look the PS3 can do better... look at GT compared to Forza.... but then another person comes and say... let's compare GT with the upcoming new PGR which is designed to look better than any racing game. Maybe both consoles have not reach the best they can produce.... and all this comparison are useless.... but they do give someone interested of what the consoles are offering NOW in terms of 3rd party game quality which can help them choose which console to buy.

I get what you are trying to say but like I said, you can almost never say one game looks better than the other when they are on different consoles. You have good developers and you have bad developers. Look at Mass Effect and MGS4. Which looks better? An argument can be made for both. The only way to tell which system is graphically better, you have to have MGS4 on both consoles or Mass effect on both consoles. To complicate things even futher. Look at the Ps2. GOW is amazing however, to compare it to NG which came out 3 years earlier than it is crazy. Development budgets, durations and manpower all have to be taken into effect when you are comparing exculsives. However, when you are comparing multiplat form games, everything is equal. It has always been done this way.

Examples:
MK1: blood vs. no blood
SF
Madden( ps2 vs Xbox)

This is the first gen that I have ever heard of people trying to compare exculsives. I think that has a lot to do witht he ps3 coming out later and not games not looking as good as the 360 versions. It's crazy to compare Halo to Resistance as the artstyles just do not allot it.

But since the update to the Xbox 360's version, there identical, regardless, this does show that in EVERY case the ps3 version will suffer unless given months and months to a years more development time due to the cell/rsx difficulty.

UBI is doing a good job helping bring the ps3 versions up to par. I think that's what's up with games like Assassins Creed, The Xbox 360 version is the one always shown, I'm sure it's been finished way before the ps3 version but there waiting on release so it simultaneously releases all at once and have them looking/playing very similar. The ps3 will take months longer to bring it all up to par. Sony fans should be glad their doing this, this way there wont be that inevitable lagging ps3 version.

This is obvious to anyone paying attention, HOWEVER, if the game/s play good, does it matter that much? Naaaaa.

Ok we could all tell that the original xbox was more powerful than the ps2. The reason being is because the the Xbox hardware came out 2years after the ps2, and was also easier for western developers to come to grasp with because of the Direct X development environment. Which is pretty much the standard in america. Now lets look at the PS3 and 360, The same strength for the 360 comes into play again, the Direct X environment. Now the PS3 might be more powerful, im not sure IMHO opinion i think they are about equal, back to the topic the PS3 is harder to develop for so its going take more time to get the graphics out of the PS3, just like the PS2. PS2 graphics were butt compared to the XBOX1, till the latter half of it life cycle when devs finally got the hang of the machine, Games like GOW1&2, and GT4 are signs that developers finally got the hang of the machine cuz the graphics on those games were of xbox quality and i will even go as far as to say GT4 look better than forza 1. Also these machines started there life around the same time, so they hardware was at the same limit for both. Where the xbox had hardware from two years later than ps2. so for the most part the games are gonna look the same.

It's was a simple observation based on what I saw. The PS3 images TO ME look darker when displayed in 720p While the 360 images look darker when displayed in 1080p.

I want to know why that is? You people are to F'n touchy when the brand gets thrown out there. Can somebody who knows or at least has an educated guess tell me why?

most people who`s not fanboys know that up until this point most multiplatformgames have been better on the 360. What`s also known is that games can be great on the PS3, if they take the time and resources to do so as in Oblivion.

If the PS3 manages to get more consoles into the homes (drop the price will you Sony), companies will hopefully be forced to makes better ports or doing them in another order than now, to get people to buy their games on PS3 (at least the hardcore, the mainstream players don`t tend to notice framerate drops or slightly worse graphics). But as the PS3 is more difficult to make games for and the games which has come out so far have been more or less launch games with the aim to get the game out, regardless of in what state. As game developers get more familiar with the hardware.

With that said, Sony needs to get better tools out to developers (which they`ve started trough EDGE and the rumored cooperation with Epic on Unreal Engine), convince them to make games for PS3 first and then port to 360 or at least makes sure PS3 games are not rushed, because it will be harder to sell a 600$ console when the majority of multiplatform games can be found for a cheaper price and with better performance.

Most of the games look better on PS3 in my opinion.

Vegas while a little darker has some better lighting in there that works for the game more than the X360 version with everything brighter and windows you can see being kinda bluish silver colored on the outside while on the PS3 they look like real windows and you can't see your character as well. If its dark outside you shouldn't be able to see very well.

Oblivion looks brighter and loads a little faster on the PS3 vs the X360 version. The brighter lighting looks better in my opinion as it should during the middle of the day.

Splinter Cell has flashlights where lightbulbs should be in those screen shots and the darker PS3 version shows off some real lighting. I am shocked to see noone can see that.

Sonic looks better on the X360 than the PS3, but as stated above noone cares the game still has issues.

Marvel UA and Tony Hawks 8 - Looks about the same on both platforms.

Alot of sony boys here like to say that their sony comes out on top when it comes with multiplatform games but stop fooling yourselves. It is a known fact by top magazines that multiplatform games look better on the 360. Rainbow 6, Darkness, Madden 08, etc... The list continues to grow. So don't act like what something different sony has to offer is a good thing, b/c it's not, unless you wanted a $600.00 BR player. Does everyone want developers to continue to give sony games an extra 6 months to a year as in Oblivions place just to make there games playable, NO!! This isn't a good thing, Sony failed already!! Yes, they can continue to put out games, some may even be really good but they've lost and lost badly this round and it's quite frankly an embarrassment. That could of did it up right but chose not to.

MS rushed the Xbox 360, BUT!! They still had the ultimate gaming system in mind when they did it, not a wannabe PC which is what sony did. The Xbox 360 is the ultimate gaming system, rushed or not and they've just upped the warranty for all, this say's alot about the character of this platform. I used to own both Sega Dreamcast and ps2, I sold my ps2 and had some 56 games for my dreamcast and kept it b/c I loved it and it's to bad they messed up w/3rd party dist. or else they could of kept a dominate part of gaming b/c even though sony was hyping the ps2 as all that and a bag of chips, it wasn't and not even close, but the dreamcast was quite simply a gaming machine and a hell of a fun one at that.

Simply put Microsoft did most EVERYTHING right this time w/the Xbox 360, hence a few hardware issues to there credit they've fixed for FREE, and those that paid are being reimbursed. MS and the Xbox 360 has future laid out in it's gaming machine easily being able to update and make it's already outstanding single player campaign and mouth watering online multiplayer gaming to new levels. To be honest I haven't had a bad experience yet, my neighbor and good friend he has a ps2 and a ps3 and he's a sony man and wouldn't have it another way!!!
