GameSpot: Metro 2033 Review

Metro 2033 is a well-paced shooter that will likely take you more than 10 hours to complete. It is punctuated by emotional and dramatic moments (a surprising encounter with a child, a few intense railcar sequences), though these aren't without their own idiosyncrasies (the immersion-busting "quickly tap x" prompt). Many elements of Metro 2033 aren't quite up to modern shooter standards, but taken as a whole, they come together nicely.

The pervasive atmosphere is largely responsible for this cohesion, creating a grim, enthralling world that you feel compelled to explore. Though it is not without its perils, Metro 2033 is a very worthwhile game for anyone craving a uniquely rewarding journey into man's dark future.

Typical bot. Hype it up one week prior, and the reviews start pouring in so you change your opinion to flop.

It's okay - I'm sure you'll get a game sooner or later.

Sir_Ken_Kutaragi_5163d ago

...that is the xBox 360 for you in 1 word - 'FLOP' ;-D

Chubear5163d ago

The review was surprisingly pretty informative which is a rarity this gen with reviews. I'll check this game out soon enough. I love the feel and look of the universe.

ReservoirDog3165163d ago

I still think this sounds really good. I'm gonna get it down the line sometime. Probably in the summer games drought.

JokesOnYou5163d ago

I'll check it out for myself....'cause it still sounds like a good game from the review.

JOY

mal_tez925163d ago

The shooting mechanics are described as not so good, but in the video the shooting appears to be very good.

I'm still waiting for a game to top Killzone 2 in terms of shooting and movement.

JonnyBadfinger5163d ago

Im a 360 enthusiast and i gotta say the game looks like a bore fest to me. the trailers cant hold my attention for longer than a minute. Seriously in the 2033 there are gunna be gargoyles in Russian subways? and dragon looking things? if this is the case we are f***ed.

the genre has been visited hundreds of times and so far only 1 franchise has done it successfully... Fallout. and with New Vegas just around the corner this game fails in comparison. this game just proves that no game in this genre can compete with Fallout.

Ive never played the game and only watch the first 1.13 seconds of the launch trailer and i give the game a 3/10... thats my opinion and its 100% correct, though your thoughts may vary.

Which ever gaming site started the hype about this game needs to be be burnt to the ground, they turned the internet into a web of hype and lies...wait... oh thats right, this IS the internet... sorry carry on with the BS

"The pervasive atmosphere is largely responsible for this cohesion, creating a grim, enthralling world that you feel compelled to explore. Though it is not without its perils, Metro 2033 is a very worthwhile game for anyone craving a uniquely rewarding journey into man's dark future."

But if you prefer numbers to the content of the actual review, then maybe it's an ouch.

Your comment is so worthless, you should have just written "first", because that's the only reason you made it.

AliTheBrit195163d ago

I hate the way reviews have gotten these days

Ouch

Pfft, what about the many 9/10's and 8/10's this game has gotten?

I'm still going to pick it up, it looks incredible and unique, set aside from most FPS these days. Screw the haters, its there loss.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5163d ago

Gamespot is bugging! More so than not they're rather harsh with their reviews. I'm probably 6 hours in now and I give it a 9.5 so far...the .5 I dock is because of the textures of the vehicles when you go top side, its just inconsistent with the rest of the game's looks, which are some of the best this gen. If it wasn't for that I would say this is the best looking fps this gen. You'd have to see it to believe it, it makes the Fallout 3 engine look quite dated. But everything else is perfect, although I would like more side missions like Fallout 3 and Borderlands.

callahan095163d ago

It's been getting a lot of 8's, some 7's and some 9's, so it sounds like a pretty solid game to me, and the trailers look awesome in my opinion, so I can't wait to give this game a try and see if I agree more with the 7's or the 9's or in between. I had it at the top of my GameFly Q, I had no games out and my plan allows me two games out at a time, and yet somehow they didn't send it to me, which is weird, because I do this every time I want a new release: I send in what I have and clear my Q except for the game I want, and then I'm always in the first batch of shipments for that game. Not sure why they didn't send this to me. Now it says "Availability: Low" which means it could be a month before they send it to me. So I added Resonance of Fate, and they sent it immediately, so at least I'll get to try something.

HolyOrangeCows5163d ago

What happened to it supposedly being a graphical power house? So many people were claiming such (Despite ugly textures), but all of the reviews seem to agree that this is far from the case.

I'll pass for now if the shooting and AI feel dated.

dirthurts5163d ago

And as for being a graphical powerhouse, they where talking about the pc version. DX11 feature heavy. I want to see a pc review, as that's where I want to play it.

vhero5162d ago

So much for the great 360 exclusive Metro 2033... Oh wait it was never really an exclusive anyways.. Shame though about the game it had so much potential..

DatNJDom815162d ago

we all know the rules here. A 7.5 is great for 360 exclusive, while a 7.5 for a PS3 exclusive is utter failure. gaming media/xbox defense force rules, not mine. lol. anyway, game sounds solid. probable rent.

GiantEnemyCrab5162d ago

So is that like a MAG ouch? or like a WKC oooooucch?

ico925162d ago

this review sounded like an 8.5-9

raztad5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

Something I learn from MAG reviews is a 7/10 game could be a lot better than you expect. Reviewers love to deduct points out of cons that might not be relevant for you or in any way make the game less enjoyable. The atmosphere alone makes this game worth a try, BioShock comes to mind.

I'm not in a hurry for a new game right now, but I'm pretty sure I'll give this one a try at some point.

BlackTar1875162d ago

I will def. enjoy it when i get my hands on it.

Flipity flopity flop.

Mo0eY5163d ago (Edited 5163d ago )

Hype it up, Jason 360. OOOOOOHHHH YEAH.

Come look at Jason 360 get owned: http://n4g.com/NewsCom-4891...

LOOOOOOOOOOL.

Michael-Jackson5163d ago (Edited 5163d ago )

It's Jason 360s GOTY, let him be with his precious.

Harlequiine5163d ago

Although I think Jason360 is an absolute spanner with no idea about gaming, I don't see the problem with his GoTY being Metro 2033, I haven't played it but judging from some reviews, some people absolutely love it for the atmosphere and others can't get past the sub-par controls and gunplay.

Regardless, even if he is a knob, it's his choice, you can't really criticize that.

insomnium5163d ago

Always good to laugh a little.

Darrius Cole5162d ago

That was quite a bit of ownage.

GiantEnemyCrab5162d ago

Ownage because he was excited for the game? Geesh if that's ownage than I need to crack out some MAG threads..

Day 1, It's my GOTY because it has the bestest graphics.

smittyjerkins5163d ago (Edited 5163d ago )

It actually looks like a pretty good game and since when was 7.5 a bad score (as your /s made it out to be)?

finbars755163d ago (Edited 5163d ago )

The game deserves a 7.5 at best.I just played this game and beat it and its not that great at all.The character models looked dated and stiff. The shooting in it is off.So to all those who sit here and try to defend the game then all I have to say is that you must play alot of crappy games or must be a Halo fan.GOTY not even close, better then bioshock2 and ME2 not in this lifetime.I personally dont think any of you have played this game and just want to defend it because our xbox has sh!t for games.thank god I have all the consoles. Now I can get back to playing GOW3 after wasting my time playing Metro2033.Its a rental.

mastiffchild5163d ago

Well, I was really hoping that what I'd been told about it being a value title was true but it's full price everywhere I've seen in the UK so either a couple of people have lied to me or, worse, the UK has been shafted and in that case I will NOT be buying the game! I like the look and idea of it too so I'm gutted as it happens.

Metro Video Game Series: A Comprehensive History

The Metro video game series started with a humble b-list title, before building a strong fanbase and becoming a pioneer in the industry.

TheBrainZ88d ago

Never got into Exodus, but 2033 was excellent.

kevco3388d ago

Yeah, Exodus just didn't grab me either, sadly.

I absolutely loved 2033 and Last Light, however. Played them both on 360 and then again with the remasters!

anast88d ago

I just started it and it is already miles better than the first 2 which are dated.

Has anyone here played it? It looks interesting but I'm not sold on it yet.

jjb19811000d ago

It has an actual story tied to your actions. The environments are immersive and I believe they just added DLSS. The devs are VERY active in the Steam community. The game has been released past the 1.0 version. There are some crafting mechanics and base building similar to Fallout 4. I like the voice acting and world building. You run missions for supplies, recruiting characters and progressing the story.. I've been playing since early access and the game has come a LONG way. I can't make any recommendations for any console versions because I don't know how those run.

camel_toad999d ago

Ok thanks all for the info and sales pitch. I'm going to get it after hearing this. And it's also nice to hear it has DLSS. One of the best advancements to come along in quite a while.

MadLad1000d ago (Edited 1000d ago )

I supported it via Early Access, but just played a bit before to get a feel for it.
Just officially started it last night, and I'm having a great time with it.

JsonHenry999d ago

Its a fantastic game. The reviewer is right. If it you like those other two games you'll probably like this one too.

GhostScholar1000d ago

I'm sold on it big time. I love the metro games and to me this is very much in that wheelhouse. It was very impressive technically as well.

EvertonFC1000d ago

Looking fwd to it, I thinks it's November for ps5 release so gonna wait 😊

THEzRude1000d ago

Can whole heartedly recommend.
