Molyneux says Heavy Rain offers the 'first glimpses of the future' of games

If only Sony had waited until after the South by Southwest festival to release Heavy Rain, the publisher could have printed several glowing quotes from a known Xbox consorter on the back of the PS3-exclusive's game box. Oh, well -- there's always the "Game of the Year" edition.

During a a one-on-one conversation with writer Frank Rose at SXSW this week, Fabled designer Peter Molyneux heaped praise on Heavy Rain, calling it "absolutely brilliant."

tunaks15162d ago

i hope not,
but before you flame me,
let me explain,
when I play a game, I want to PLAY it, not watch it. I can appreciate the effort and story development that went into Heavey Rain but I would much rather play a game like God Of War 3 or Metroid.

Raf1k15162d ago

It's perfectly OK for you to prefer games like GoW but you've obviously not played Heavy Rain.

WildArmed5162d ago

I respect your opinion but anyone who says that you 'watch' heavy rain is misinformed.
Yes the pace varies, but you are always actively involved in the game.
It's definitely no MGS4, a 2 hour movie clip after every chapter (which is the best game i've played this gen lol)

tunaks15162d ago

"you've obviously not played Heavy Rain."
I havent :) thats why i said it not my type of game, i was going to rent it but the gameplay videos just didnt entice me. I see the draw to the game, but its just not my thing

TOO PAWNED5162d ago

", I could not bring myself to play more than 90 minutes" - does he mean he only played 90 min of whole game, or played 90 min sessions?

bjornbear5162d ago

HR is a win or loose game, not everyone will get it

but i doubt EVERY game will be like HR, HR just opened the flood gates for new innovative gameplay directions =)

rambi805162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

1)I was against Heavy Rain until i played the demo - i got to the fight - stopped playing, and pre-ordered - this after giong in expecting to hate it as some QTE crap

The way it draws you in is incredible

2)I poke a lot of fun at Peter - so to be fair to him, hats off for working against fanboyism

Lykon5162d ago

and I HAVE played it to completion. for me personally this game was a huge dissapiontment. I was attracted to elements of the story and setting but found the experience far too limited and shallow in terms of control and interaction. It was a struggle to finish it to be honest and I traded it at Game today without having used the extra content code.

smittyjerkins5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

You know, Heavy Rain seems like an interesting game, but it just is not my kind of game. I commend Heavy Rain for being original and different and mature, but I hope that when Molyneux says that Heavy Rain offers a glimpse into the future of videogames, he isn't referring to every videogame. I'm just not a big fan of QTE and emotional stories just aren't what interest me (I still haven't finished MGS4 and I got it day 1).

-Mezzo-5162d ago

It is really encouraging to see, Exclusive developers of one platform complementing a Game developed for the rival Platform.

Tricksy5162d ago

i have seen his flaming comments all over N4G lately and most of it was negative towards the PS3.

He is like Bungie, he says a bunch of FUD... then tries to get cred by saing something like "Killzone 2 is awesome. i love the lighting"

or in this case "Heavy rain is the future of gaming", which btw, may as well be antihype, since many people feel that to be complete BS as they have a strong desire to have more controll in games.

seems like a x357 fanboy to me, from what I have seen. Another person in Microsofts pocket perhaps

the only thing Microsoft does right is PR and consumer culture, and I cant play that, but the x357 fans love it: They can fight in AND out of the game!

HolyOrangeCows5162d ago

Molyneux is such a nut. If his visions were the gaming industry, I wouldn't be a gamer.

Simon_Brezhnev5162d ago

He must want to work for sony. The past couple weeks all he has been doing is commenting on is Sony products and not microsoft.

i_like_ff75162d ago

The thing is you do play Heavy Rain. Games like Mass Effect(or any bioware game for that matter) and Heavy Rain are the future of story telling in games. It's always been a massive divide in the story telling of games where you play a part then you watch a cutscene. There's nothing the player does that affects the story. There's no connection between the gameplay and the story whereas in Heavy Rain the gameplay is the story. You are in control. This isn't a movie where everything is super passive. Games are more and this is what interactive entertainment is all about.

GrandTheftZamboni5162d ago

In real life, some people are more inclined to perform hands-on work and some like to make decisions. Like soldiers and generals, programmers and managers etc. Heavy Rain would be more suitable for decision maker type of guy.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5162d ago

So, you gonna play, take the controller, and not watch the TV?

WildArmed5161d ago

Considering English is probably your second language, I'mma let you stick with that.
Because anyone with a 3rd grade English edition should be able to understand the difference between 'watching' and 'playing.'

5tgyw3ty345160d ago

Yeah i agree, this isnt even save to call a game really. Heavy rain greatly reminds me of those hideous full motion video games of the nineties. If this is the future for gaming, then goodnight gaming.

Foxgod5162d ago

First time i disagree with Pete, Heavy rain is for special people.
Or better said, people who think they are special, kind of like those people on imdb that give 10's to crappy drama's, and downplay mainstream stuff.

Lets trow a bone in the direction of these special people once a while, to keep them happy, but keep gaming the way it is, for real people.

Fishy Fingers5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

Little extreme, I'm more than happy to play a game on COD or Street Fighter as well as some Heavy Rain, just all depends what mood I'm in and what I fancy at the time.

If you believe that makes me "special" then I guess that makes you narrow minded.

Foxgod5162d ago

Calling someone narrow minded, because of your own taste, is exactly what makes you special.

Fishy Fingers5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

Calling someone "special" because of their own taste is exactly what makes you narrow minded.

Works both ways, although you'd probably realise that if you weren't so narrow minded :)

You make it too easy.

Foxgod5162d ago

Can work both ways, but it dont right now, because i am dealing with someone special.

Somnipotent5162d ago

how do you even have any bubbles fox?

Eamon5162d ago

Oh god, it doesn't look like this argument has an end.

Foxgod, what Fishy Fingers is trying to get across to you is that everyone has their own personal opinions and tastes.
SUPRISINGLY ENOUGH, maybe because of this fact, people choose to buy between an xbox 360 or a ps3.

Heavy Rain is not for me, but God of War III is. That doesn't mean Heavy Rain is crap or I'm not "special."

bjornbear5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

you are officially the most uncultured and narrow minded person i have come across in here

for real people? are you suggesting because I enjoy a game that is unconventional or a movie like Christine F. I'm "special"?

so being cultured, and enjoying NON mainstream, dumbed down bubblegum crap is a bad thing now?

I can enjoy mainstream stuff as much as the next guy, but there's a reason why publicity and marketing usually sees the consumer as a child:

they are so brainless to what they consume, usually you have to keep it basic, layman, so not to confuse them and shake their foundations of what things "should be like"

people like you don't take anything forward =/

people like you don't exist in art, literature, theater, design, or any form of creative endeavor that brings the world forward

unfortunately, FOXGOD,

you are the poster child of the mindless consumer

bravo...be proud -__- i bet you don't read books for fun either huh...

@ Eamon

HAHA yeah I have =) but regardless, I learnt that in my Marketing and Publicity Module for my Bachelors in Design

its a known truth - marketing and advertisement turn any adult into a child to tap onto their core desires

hence making us WANT everything, just like kids do =)

Eamon5162d ago

bjornbear, have you seen Fight Club?

kneon5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

@Eamon

For me it's the other way around. I thought heavy rain was fantastic but GOW III is not for me. I just can't take hours of button mashing, but I couldn't stop playing heavy rain. I understand the appeal of GOW III and will probably buy it anyway just because it looks so damn awesome.

Peter was right on about the QTEs. It made the game far more stressfull as a single mistake can have serious consequences. And I understand how he couldn't handle more than 90 minutes. The game is very immersive and engaging and it's a world that can be very disturbing for some people. My wife can't play it as it's too stressful for her.

Whoooop5162d ago

"Can work both ways, but it dont right now, because i am dealing with someone special."

lol

What a funny (in a sad way) comeback...

HolyOrangeCows5162d ago

I almost feel bad for you, foxgodless. How pathetic can you be to call people who enjoy Heavy rain "special"? Anyway, We all know why you're REALLY hating on it, and that's because it's not on the xbox.

Lykon5162d ago

that was by far one of the most sickeningly smug, judgmental comments i have read anywhere in quite a while. You even had to let us know about your degree course. chill out mate

Lykon5162d ago

thanks for the pm , i take back what i wrote, which was on reflection a bit strong x

JustTheFactsMr5162d ago

Guys go easy. Foxgood's confusion between perceptive people and special people is what makes him special. Have some empathy as you would for a blind man. And at the same time realize there is nothing that can be done for him.

Nicaragua5161d ago

Foxgod you are unintentionally the funniest person on this entire website.

Shame on me for laughing at simpletons but I cant help it.

Denethor_II5160d ago (Edited 5160d ago )

What a sub human attention seeking little prik you are.

Heavy Rain was one of those rare games that required my full devoted thought...I loved it.

butterfinger5160d ago

you must be pretty simple-minded then.

Madeline125162d ago

Games,Virtual worlds and etc will be much better and immersive then they are now.

jalen2475162d ago

Heavy Rain is a magnificent experience and a sight to behold visually.

I recommend the game to everyone

I love FPS like the next man but sometimes its good to experience something different and refreshing...Flower...Shadow of the Colossus...Heavy Rain...Indigo Prophecy...etc

gillri5162d ago

I agree games like SOTC, ICO Heavy Rain, Shenmue are just those speical games that feel unlike otehr titles and really stick out in your mind

butterfinger5160d ago

please never EVER put Heavy Rain in the same class of games as ICO, SoTC, and Shenmue. That is absolute blasphemy, and you should be banned from gaming for just the thought of it.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1265d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1265d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1265d ago (Edited 1265d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1422d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121422d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1422d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121422d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121422d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

C-H-E-F1422d ago

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
