Lens of Truth: Battlefield - Bad Company 2 Analysis

Lens of Truth writes, "The battlefield is a scene of constant chaos. The winner will be the one who controls that chaos." ~ Napoleon Bonaparte. This week the Lens of Truth staff puts that quote to the test because we finally got our chance to sit down and revisit Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."

Hold everything.

Edit: Okay, I guess I'll be going with the PS3 version. No major problems between the two versions. I just want to start buying most of my games for one console.

champ215178d ago

as expected.. ps3, xbox versions are simular. Infact if you didnt see the system it was running on you wouldnt be able to distinguish.

Now if you are looking for a version where you can truely see a difference then its on the PC. Dx11 1080(and beyond), 60fps+

though the game should be bought on the system where you ahve the most friends, since its MP.

Oldsnake0075178d ago

Awesome sh*t doesnt even work

WildArmed5178d ago

Awesome.
Game is the same on all plats.
I will pick it up for sure in the upcoming weeks.
No I won't name the platform ;)

DelbertGrady5178d ago

I bought it for the 360! *runs for cover*

PaLaK-5178d ago

It looks very similar on the xbox/ps3 so there's no point arguing over minor differences - single console owners will buy it on that console, and multi-console owners should just buy it on whichever console they have more friends on or prefer. Face the facts though - the pc version beats both of these graphically, and it was confirmed that the PC servers had more people on them than the PS3 or the Xbox. Before anybody says im a PC fan, I only use my PS3 for gaming, but I'm not so blind or dumb that I think every multiplat on the PS3 is superior. Having said that, the thing about PC gaming is every once in a while the graphics card and equipment needs to be changed, whereas the consoles have the same hardware yet the devs somehow make it better and better year on year with nothing extra.

aCHU5178d ago

Haha nice move.. safety first. ;)

Perjoss5178d ago

bottom line:
this game is incredible fun on any platform, DICE have raised the bar once again.

kaveti66165178d ago

Not that it matters, but what the hell did I get disagrees for?

Perjoss5178d ago

@ evrfighter

I'm usually the first to preach about PC gfx, but I must say this looks lovely on consoles also.

Persistantthug5177d ago

I'd personally be a bit nervous to buy the XBOX version. I'd be a little nervous of the wear and tear considering the fragile state of the system.

Not only that, but speaking of fragile, I also prefer BluRays because they are scratch resistant.

IdleLeeSiuLung5177d ago

I used to be concerned about my 360 taking a dive, but it hasn't ever. On the flip side, the most common problems with consoles is the disc drive wearing out.

I have a MGS4 Limited Edition console (the one with the gunmetal grey material) that I paid $650 after taxes! Since you can't install whole games onto the PS3, I'm concerned the disc drive will fail and the machine is way past warranty.

On a side note, Bad Company 2 is the closest a multi-plat I have seen compared on Lens of Truth.

Bigpappy5177d ago

But it is not enough to make anyone buy it over the PS3 version. It is most noticable in weapons and in the distance. Technically 360 has the more stable frame rate and less screen tear. Developers are getting better at making the game more even between 360 and PS3. Less reasons to have a fanboy fight.

BISHOP-BRASIL5177d ago

Get out of there Soda, those guys are too busy sticking their nose up their monitors looking for differences they barely can see on still images, much worse on fluid movies or gameplay...

They don't mean no harm, just need better lens (some that lie a bit, maybe).

Pandamobile5177d ago

'Alphas' refers to the alpha channel (or transparancy) on a texture. Stuff like foliage and hair are modeled as simple 3D planes with an alpha'd texture. The background of the texture will be a solid colour (usually black or white), and that part will be transparent, with the painted texture being the only thing that is visible.

Think of it like green screening.

DaTruth5177d ago

This is a BFBC2 PS3 and 360 comparison! PC fanboys need not apply!

There are more comments here addressing the PC superiority than the differences between 360 and PS3! "Bu, bu, but, if you want to play teh real BFBC2, "just" buy teh $1400 rig!"

champ215177d ago

@datruth

so lets not get that 100usd gpu upgrade on the pc, instead lets get a 300usd console. then pay 10-15usd extra per game for the rest of the 7years... give it up, consoles wont win the price argument against PC. Unless we build a really hi end pc which isnt needed, since even a low/mid range pc will outperform anything a console can do.

ps3ftwin5177d ago

i was debating on getting the ps3 version, but with the price difference where i am at PC version being 25usd cheaper and higher res fps, PC was the obvious choice.

t8505177d ago

Played the game on my 4870x2 runs great 1080 60fps+ everything maxed out.

Later i was over at a friends house seeing the xbox360 version, it was about 30fps dipping down at times. Textures looked low res compared to PC.

I couldnt go back to 30fps after playing well over 60fps.

Pc is the version to get.

Good comparison! I am glad to see that the two versions look so close. Still wonder what is going on with the vegetation on the Xbox 360...what a mess.

tronz5178d ago

"Still wonder what is going on with the vegetation on the Xbox 360...what a mess."

I think you are exaggerating what was said in the article, you can not tell by looking at these pics.

Antan5177d ago

"I think you are exaggerating what was said in the article, you can not tell by looking at these pics."

From the article-:

"While both version looked similar the Xbox 360 version had some rendering issues that were more noticeable. When we compared the demo builds of this game both version rendered some distracting alpha maps that surrounded most of the environments vegetation edges. This anomaly was easily seen when we decide to take cover behind some bushes. Unfortunately, the Xbox 360 version returned with the same alpha problems we experienced with the demo. On the other hand the PlayStation 3 version rendered the alpha maps correctly, making them completely transparent. Obviously, this never effects game-play, but technically speaking it looked plain ugly".

No, i`d say his comment is pretty much spot on. Spread you fud elswhere.

ClownBelt5178d ago

Wow. Isn't Dice owned by EA? Holy crap! EA devs are fricking talented when it comes to porting games...ie Dante's Inferno

kaveti66165178d ago

Too bad I hated Dante's Inferno.

ClownBelt5178d ago

What about the PC version though? We all know it will be superior, but like what I want to know is how superior it is compare to the console versions...

champ215178d ago

@clownbelt

2 console friends of mine when they saw the pc version running @ 1080p. they dropped the console version to get PC. The difference was very visable even in beta when pc was running at medium res textures. in the final game with dx 11 and hi res textures pc is clearly superior while having silky smooth 60fps+. its very smooth even on a 8800gtx(3yrs old).

ShinMaster5177d ago (Edited 5177d ago )

No one just drops their choice on a console version of a game for the PC version. If they bought a console, more than likely they won't care about playing the same games on the PC.

We all know PCs can have higher graphical performance if you got the money. And I don't care how much some PC gamers may spend prepping their rig for a nonexistent title. Because so far almost all multiplatform titles don't look that much more impressive or mind blowing on PCs compared to consoles.

Let console gamers enjoy their games. You're not changing anyone's minds.

IHateYouFanboys5177d ago

they might be talented with porting, but this isnt a port so its a moot point.

Bad Company 2, like nearly EVERY other multiplatform game this generation, has all versions developed concurrently. this, by definition, is not a port.

Nikuma5177d ago

This game on the PC isn't anything special really. It looks a bit better yeah, but you can tell it's a straight port from the consoles and doesn't truly take advantage or push PC capabilities.

Now Battlefield 3.... that'll be something amazing to see on the PC.

champ215177d ago

@shingino

keep telling yourself that. people who are open minded do change when they see a superior version out there @ a cheaper price.

Now if it satifies you to keep telling yourself that pcs are expensive that doesnt change fact. Console gamers need to drop the myth on pcs being expensive to game on. That just insnt true, rather its the otherway around. Pc can be cheaper then getting a console since most of us already have one(just needs a 100usd gpu). Even if one is built from scratch it will be cheaper then a console in the long run, say 2years.

devsgreat5178d ago

the game looks very very good...graphics look slightly better on PS3...nothing really big, who ever buy this game can enjoy the 2 versions the same way...great job DICE

thetruthinator5178d ago

I dont really agree that the graphics looked better on the ps3 version. Yes, something was really messed up with that bush, but it you look carefully at the other pictures (as in the picture of the dock, or lack of texture definition of the chinstrap in the ps3 pic) it looks like the 360 version actually has an edge on the ps3 version.

I looked pretty carefully at these stills and i think anyone who says differently either 1) didnt look at them, or 2) FOS

Persistantthug5177d ago

I certainly did and love it. I also played the beta to hell and back and a great deal of the demo.

I can tell you firsthand that you will spend more time directly looking at bushes than you will at someones chinstrap......cause you'll be in em. lol
Also, you can see those same "particles" goin on in the Haggard picture when you look at his mustache.

I'm not exactly sure what that is (I think that's what they are referring to as ALPHAS), because I'm still trying to get word from my question on 1.12, but it might be this explaination that this guy came up with...maybe:

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

thetruthinator5177d ago

Yes, i have had the game since launch. I spend time in the bushes and i have not yet noticed the poor quality they are rendered at(although i might now). I probably didn't notice because the extra marks just added to the chaos of view impairment that you would expect from being in a bush (im not saying its ok though).

Im going to be lazy and not check your link... but rather i am going to go ahead and guess that its an error experienced on the 360 from decompression of the texture... whereas the ps3 version probably doesnt have to decompress as much due to the large blu-ray storage.

Ju5177d ago (Edited 5177d ago )

@Persistantthug Re Alphas. I think you got your answer already, but maybe I will say it again here.

"Alpha" is used to describe a transparency. I am not sure why its called "Alpha" as such, but it was (and is) actually used as an additional 4th component to describe the color information of a pixel.

The color information is usually stored in 3 components, red, green and blue (you might have heard about that in things like "RGB" pixels), 8 bit each (today we can have higher resolution of each component). But with 3x8 bit the full color range in an RGB is therefore 24 bits or 16.7 million possible colors (there are other encoding schemes, like YUV and also 10 bits per gun, as well as floating point pixels).

But going with the RGB convention, this is a 3 byte value. There is nothing like a 3 byte word in a cpu or in memory. Its either 8, 16, 32 or 64 bits, 3 bytes are 24, which in fact makes memory, in which such an image is stored un-aligned data. Very bad for a cpu to process. Somebody came up adding a 4th byte, and while it would be a waste of memory to "just" add a 4th byte, this 4th one became the "Alpha Channel". It is an 8 bit value, which can describe the transparency level of the pixel (the RGB + Transparency). It allows 256 levels of transparency of each single pixel.

By using this around edges, those edges can be "smoothed" (this is not anti aliasing like used in MSAA or such, its not a filter), but using the transparency allows you to "fade" edges to the background.

The trade off with such a method is, that to achieve transparency, the GPU has to read the pixel on a specific location, and then use a raster operation to "merge" the new pixel to the old destination. It has to mix the new and old information.

This additional read cycle is bandwidth intensive. Obviously just writing that pixel is twice as fast. That is, why alpha in textures is sometimes avoided at all costs. To make sure, the render engine does not run into bandwidth limitations "pseudo transparency" is used sometimes, where, by using a hi res pattern, every other pixel is drawn. Means, one pixel is the old background, while the next is the source pixel, cheating the eye into believing the image is transparent.

To make it short, alpha in the (leave) textures is used in the PS3 version resulting in more smooth transparent effects, while the 360 does not use correct alpha channeled textures, but "pseudo transparency" (according to that article).

tronz5178d ago (Edited 5178d ago )

So almost the same but with some missing textures and other effects in the PS3 version. PS3 rendered the environments vegetation better. Less screen tearing in the 360 version. Runs better on the 360. Not bad Dice. Even though they gave PS3 the edge in looks, you can clearly see the PS3 version has missing textures and has a off red tent.

Biggest5178d ago

Why is it a problem that PS3 pitched a red tent?

tronz says: Even though they gave PS3 the edge in looks, you can cry cry cry cry cry cry red tent.

Don't be sad that the people that judge looks didn't call your number. You'll win in 2006. I'm a psychic.

Antan5177d ago

"So almost the same but with some missing textures and other effects in the PS3 version."

Really? Did you pull that from your @rse as there is no mention of this in the article?

"you can clearly see the PS3 version has missing textures and has a off red tent."

Yes, its so clear even Lens Of Truth picked up on it. End sarcasm.

Who do i trust? LOT or tronz, Why Dis, POG etc etc?! LMAO!

You`ll be seeing the ban hammer shortly so best get the fud out of your system. Speaking of comparisons, its interesting you haven't commented using your We Won account since the Digital Foundry FF13 article. For a few days you were crying saying Neogaf was wrong blah blah etc etc.

SheenuTheLegend77d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long77d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons77d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor77d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5277d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

I was able to find games in the Vietnam dlc on ps3 the last week. There were articles on here about the server closure when it was announced in April

DaReapa151d ago

BF1943 is the only online MP game that I was genuinely interested in. Been playing since launch 14 years ago. Hate that I couldn't put in as much time to play as I'd hoped for during the final week.

Inverno151d ago

I got really into 43 when I bought Bf3, and preferred it. Everything that I disliked or found annoying about Bf3, wasn't an issue in 43. Too bad they never bothered releasing it on PS4 or PC.

1nsomniac151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

Dead Space 2...... I wasn't even aware that had multiplayer. Nevermind that it was apparently one of their best multiplayers!

anast151d ago

Once people stop buying micros, these companies close the doors.

Xenial151d ago

Dead Space 2 multiplayer had been hanging on for years - I'd boot my PS3 up to see some familiar names in lobbies. This will definitely be missed!

Dont make it an issue when it's not. If you haven't played it in 15 years, chances are you'll never play it.

zidane1341415d ago (Edited 415d ago )

Online game servers shut off eventually all the time. Doesn’t matter if you have the disc or not. Even if you have the disc, it’ll be just paperweight unless the game lets you connect directly to a friend or LAN play.

isarai415d ago (Edited 415d ago )

Read the article bro. They are delisting the games, including mirrors edge which is an offline game. Online servers i can understand, not being able to buy/download the games anymore? Completely separate issue, especially seeing as how some these games had lengthy sp campaigns and not just mp.

zidane1341415d ago

@israrai, you can still buy the disc for less then 10$. Hardly a loss.

TheEnigma313415d ago

You shouldn't have to buy the disc, that's the issue.

OhReginald415d ago (Edited 415d ago )

Some brilliant minds created servers to keep these old online games alive. A lot of ps2 and ps3 games that had there servers shut down a long time ago have been restored by fans to keep it going. Warhawk, killzone 2, socom 2/ confrontation, resident evil outbreak series, etc.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 415d ago
DankSinatra415d ago

The disc still exist. I don’t understand the issue. You guys are upset about that “all digital future” yet these games are not “digital only”. Hell digital only is a minority in the gaming world and so far we haven’t moved into it, the only digital only games are games as a service or online only games, which end up failing in the end.

This is no different than a store that stops selling old games, just go and buy a copy somewhere else. So which is it, you hate all digital or you like it? Make up your mind.

isarai415d ago

Talk about missing the point entirely. I'm not going to sit here and explain it to you, figure it out.

DankSinatra415d ago

Talk about whining about something and not wanting to explain from an off handed sarcastic original comment.

I got the point just fine. You’re literally complaining about something that has an easy alternative to it.

ManMarmalade414d ago

I don't think you got the point

DankSinatra414d ago (Edited 414d ago )

@ManMarmalade

No I got it, it has to do with the push towards a future of all digital and reprocussions of losing games. Something I already stayed that hasn’t happened nor is it large enough right now to cause any issues as the games that are all digital are online only to begin with or make up the minority of games

So I’ll say it again, the disc still exists for these games that are over a decade old and can still be played easily. You guys are contradicting the whole “we don’t want a digital only future” crying when the dude I originally responded to stated:

“Read the article bro. They are delisting the games, including mirrors edge which is an offline game. Online servers i can understand, not being able to buy/download the games anymore? Completely separate issue, especially seeing as how some these games had lengthy sp campaigns and not just mp.“

So again, which is it? Do you hate all digital or do you want it?

Inverno415d ago

On PC I don't think it's much of a problem but I'm sad to see BF43 being shut down. I haven't played it in a while since it's stuck on PS3, but i preferred it way more over BF3. It was the lack of invisible barriers which made it better for me.

badz149415d ago

BFBC2 was still the best overall package offered by the franchise so far IMO

porkChop415d ago

Absolutely. BC2 was such a great game. It's a shame we never got BC3.

P_Bomb414d ago

I had a great run on Bad Company 2. Pound for pound, as solid a BF package as there’s been.

InUrFoxHole415d ago

Does anyone play the last BF anymore? I searched crossplay servers and it was 20 people the most on all the servers? Can never find a game

SonyStyled415d ago

The last BC you mean? I was still able to find 10v10 on ps3 2 years ago on NA servers during the evenings. I have all the free and paid dlc installed, but there want any matches in the Vietnam dlc.
