Sony's biggest PSP failures.

PSInsider writes: "December 12th marked the 5th year anniversary of Sony's embarkation into the world of portable gaming. In that time they have managed to deliver lots of wonderful content and features to their successful handheld. However, they have also failed to accomplish a great many things. I have given up on expecting most of these features to arrive onto the current platform, but do still hope many of them will be available globally in the next generation...on the PSP2."

That display pics reminds me...where the hell is our (USA) GPS and Camera sony!?

AridSpider5189d ago

lol you're still waiting on that?

Blaze9295189d ago

Well not so much the camera anymore since it was only like a 1 mega pix lens I think. But the GPS would still be cool.

Coded-Dude5189d ago

The camera is 3MP, but the rumor was they were going to improve that before a US release....which never happened. GPS would be great though.

Blaze9295189d ago

That's not even the point. In fact, what the hell are you even ranting about?

Christopher5189d ago (Edited 5189d ago )

UMD and Piracy are one and the same, so they're really listing the same thing twice in that list. Though, this was their biggest error. I would have gone with an SD stick delivery system using an extremely high rated encryption process. There's way more than enough room, the read and transfer speeds are better than disc read speeds, and it would allow for a more portable option. They could have even leveraged their own proprietary duo sticks, which would result in greater use across the board which would lead to reduced prices and further acceptance in the mainstream as well rather than just with Sony products (camera, music devices, etc.).

No matter what they would have done, homebrew piracy would still be possible. There's really no way to prevent this type of modding of systems in this day and age.

I think the second biggest problem was the way they released the PSPGo. They either should have gone digital from the get-go or they should have released it at a price point that is in line with the older models and not $90 more expensive.

D4RkNIKON5189d ago

I don't know how badly you want the GPS but you can buy it from playasia.com You have to have a hacked PSP tho (custom firmware), there are homebrew apps that you can use for maps in the states.

40cal5189d ago

The GPS feature not coming to the US was some BS! They need to get this done with the PSP2.

FACTUAL evidence5189d ago

PSP always sucked a$$ to me...and yes i did hack my piecea sh!t portable.

FragGen5188d ago (Edited 5188d ago )

They missed the #1 fail: $40 retail price point for games. That's a huge catalyst for the piracy problem.
And #2: No right analog nub.

Fix those two and the PSP would dominate the market.

To the original author Re UMD: The PSP is pretty old... it was BLEEDING edge for a handheld at the time, UMD stores over a gig which was MONSTROUS for a handheld. Memsticks and ROM carts @ that capacity would have cost megabucks just for the media and digital distro would not have even been on the table in 2003-2004 when the PSP design was finalized.

FWIW, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the PSP. It's my favorite gizmo of all time, so far. It's an amazing device.

Who really cares about a GPS really, if people really wanted or needed one they would've gotten a standalone GPS already. Also the camera...i thought everyone had a cellphone nowadays since its so cheap..and all of them come with a camera.Another thing, they are the ONLY viable competitor in the portable gaming market next to nintendo.I always see people complain about the price yet they complain that it lacks some functions that really isn't needed..its always something

Coded-Dude5189d ago

lots of customers who bought the device because of features that were shown but never devlivered care.

CARRIERHASARRIVED5189d ago

It needed all the RPG's the DS had basically. It also needed something as good as Pokemon. It DID have Monster Hunter though, which in my opinion was better, but generally I don't think that's how it pans out in terms of popularity and sales (not that they matter much to me, but from a business standpoint it totally does).

More bundles too? I dunno. You could say stuff about UMD's, but meh. They worked fine with the PSP, they did what they were intended to do (play the games).

It's time for a successor though, it's been 5-ish years. When are we going to see the overlap, Sony?

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

It turns out that many moons ago, Microsoft once had its eye on the Sony published LittleBigPlanet series.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow8d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1827d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie7d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere6d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow6d ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney5d ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno7d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno7d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

6d ago
fsfsxii6d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno6d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?

I would kill to have a Way of the Samurai game with a huge budget and modern tech... The first game was one of my greatest joys on PS2 back in the day. And I really hope From Software will do something with Tenchu... I hate that they're just sitting on the IP like it doesn't even exist.

Relientk7735d ago

Don't play with my feelings like that.

Also, new Tenchu please!

TheColbertinator35d ago

Tenchu would be superb in this day and age. Ninja and samurai games are hot right now and more is better.
