Xboxer360.com: Post-Natal Depression

Alex Beech from Xboxer360.com writes "I wonder if anyone at Microsoft involved in the Natal project likes games. Since its announcement all they have shown us is renders of what they hope people will do with it. Glossy staged advertisements of smiling happy families, accompanied by disingenuous PR reps spinning the company line and not single real game. I watch as the Microsoft powerhouse tries to convince us that they have been working on the project for years, that it will revolutionise gaming and that it is a new concept that Nintendo didn't beat them to four years ago. I watch, listen, and finally ask myself if anyone is buying it."

I think they are saving the Natal game announcments for E3 to gain as much momentum as possible. What good would it do to unveil them now, almost a full year before its release?

Write first, think later seems to be the trend of todays gaming "journalism".

Cold 20005196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

I'm still not 100% convinced by Natal since I dont see how exactly is it supposed to appeal to the hardcore.

But this is MS we're dealing with, they always play their cards close so I'm surprised that this is coming from a 360 site since they are supposed to be used to not knowing much about anything 360 related until more or less close to release.

If at E3 they still dont show anything new then I think its OFFICIAL that Natal will be just a gimmick for the casual crowd.

IdleLeeSiuLung5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

There is no doubt Natal is geared towards casual gamers. Any benefit hard core gamers will get are likely to be minimal at least up front. The reason is simple, the Wii effectively killed all hard core gaming with motion control.

The majority of hard core gamers view motion control as the enemy as a result of the Wii. Even great hardcore (and even violent) games on the Wii have very poor sales.

The good news is Natal is relatively unexplored area of gaming, so there might be some great new games coming that we haven't seen before. Something genre breaking.

The article states that 15% of the console power turns out to be a positive thing. With their previous design of a including specific chip on the camera, MS/Developers could not increase the processing power obviously limited by the hardware. So you are essentially forced to experience a fixed amount of lag. By offloading it onto the 360, you can in theory throw more processing power at it (at developers discretion) for reduced lag. This will make your game look worse, but it darn well will make it at least function better.

As we all know, game play trumps graphics any day!

Personally, I'm very excited for Natal. Boxing/fighting games will be awesome!!!

ryuzu5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

This guy just thought up the "Post-Natal Depression" line and decided to push out an article to fit his quote.... Doesn't matter it's about a year early.

@IdleLee

Boxing? Pfft. Save yourself the time (and money) and get a Wii. Boxing is fun for about 10 mins and that is with a lagless system.

As for this spin of dumping stuff to the 360 processor - well with the crappy games we've seen on Natal so far being very laggy, how much more of a graphics downgrade can you take? Natal Pong - and it'll probabaly lag more than the Atari 2600 version lol.

The Wii has crappy graphics and less laggy motion gaming that is available right now - just get that. The 360 is supposed to compete with the PS3 - it's already struggling to keep up and now you want less graphics and more Wii-port gameplay?

MS vs Wii for motion is like Zune vs Ipod - MS is late, got poor tech and is unable to find stuff people actually want.

Cold 20005196d ago

"MS vs Wii for motion is like Zune vs Ipod - MS is late, got poor tech and is unable to find stuff people actually want."

Reminds me of the Arc.

ryuzu5196d ago

You're probably right about that too - but this article is about Natal...

r.

gaffyh5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

Stupid title, could have at least had "Pre-Natal..."

Anyway nice to see that not everyone is following Natal like the blind sheep, I've been waiting for MS to show a hardcore game on Natal since it's announcement, at least the Arc showed possible hardcore implementation with the tech demo!

I'm actually only considering getting an Arc because I already have a PSEye, and also so that I can get rid of my Wii, which has been collecting dust (literally) for almost a year. It's right next to my PS3, yet I haven't even switched it on. But both Natal and Arc need to show me a game that I WANT to play and will want to play for a long time, and not some crappy game that keeps your interest for 5 mins.

van-essa5196d ago

That didn't stop you from talking about the Wii, Zune or Ipod.

sikbeta5196d ago

@Cold 2000

"MS vs Wii for motion is like Zune vs Ipod - MS is late, got poor tech and is unable to find stuff people actually want

Reminds me of the Arc"

Duh... Obviously, everyone is late in the Motion-waggle trend, jumping into the motion-hype-wagon is the most stupid thing, when everyone as a Gamer Gain Nothing with it...

Gamers FTW!!!

Bigpappy5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

He is hoping natal fails. He doesn't care wether or not it works. He said he has a wii. Natal has not shown it requires any more space than the wii. Full body control is only one away of using Natal. The camera can work just using your hands while sitting on the couch. It can work in conjunction with the controller. His concerns should be addressed, if possible, for all motion controllers including the Wii. I believe this view that if it doesn't work for me no one else should be allowed to have it is kind of shallow and selfish. Your thoughts?

ThanatosDMC5195d ago

People want Natal and Arc to fail since they dont want their favorite consoles to become inundated with casual games like with what happened to the wii.

5195d ago
Wh15ky5195d ago

There's a difference.
360 fans everywhere on this site are hyping Natal as the next big thing, where as you will be hard pushed to find a PS3 fan hyping Arc.

The PS3 fans appear to have their feet well and truly on the ground when it comes to the upcoming motion control add-ons.

You might see the odd PS3 fan here and there saying he can't wait to play RE5 with Arc, but at least that comment is justified. We've seen it in action and we know what to expect because some of us have experienced RE4 on Wii and can safely say it is the best version of what was already one of the best games of all time.

Megaton5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

Whoever wrote this is a man after my own heart. It's like my brain took a crap on his site, and he put his name at the top as author.

"Natal’s need for frenetic movement will also demand more space, a valuable commodity in many homes. Admittedly I live in Japan, where living space is somewhat limited, but my apartment is on the large size but I still struggle to stage a good two-player game of Wii Tennis. The idea that I will have to move the coffee table out of the room every time I want to play a game on my 360 is not filling me with anticipation."

That's something I've been thinking about for awhile now that no one talks about, particularly regarding the Japanese market. Large homes, or even large apartments aren't nearly as abundant in Japan as they are in the United States. Even in the US it seems like anyone stuck in a studio apartment is SOL if they wanna get their Natal on, unless they wanna juggle some furniture every time.

acheashadow5196d ago

I have to agree, I have a fairly large living room but we still have to move stuff around for a game of Wii Sports Resort!

Omega45196d ago

The likely reason no one mentions it is because if its possible to make space for the Wii then no one should have any problems with Natal.

ryuzu5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

Well that would be poor reasoning on the part of any MS researcher wouldn't it.

The Wii controller requires a) only arm movement and b) very small movements that can be done sitting down.

While natal will apparently only be able to interpret yor movements if you're stood in front of camera with your whole body in view (and lag while doing it).

Still, with the current crop of game demos for Natal, it'll only get played for 10 mins so I guess rearranging the furniture won't matter beyond purchase day.

r.

tinybigman5196d ago

its funny you should mention studio apt's because i bought one last year (all i could afford right now), and like you said i have very limited space to play motion type games. its kinda of the reason i dont play my Wii as much and if i do i play the ones that dont require full movement.

personally i was never really interesting in natal as im getting older and i work all day; so when i get home id like to relax when it comes to one of my favorite hobbies.

Looks like the Xbox guys are finally starting to realize that Microsoft is only concerned with talking about how great their products are, instead of actually being concerned with how mediocre their products really are.

The evil Microsoft spell has been lifted. At least for some.

TheTruth20095196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

I love the fact that the pro-XBOX360 websites are asking the necessary questions that the Gaming Media SHOULD be asking the creator of its favorite console. The media's job is to hold the source's feet to the fire when there are questions to be asked. Just like the "Project Natal Lag Video" from yesterday. XBOXEvolved did a GREAT job on that video because the questions need to be asked from its community.

But the PS3 Fanbase doesn't ask those questions. They're still blinded by fanboyism and sites like PlaystationLifestyle, PS3Center, and the like just perpetuate the stereotype that PS3 Fans are THE WORST FANS OF ANY GENERATION.

Just like Ironstarmovement's article about God of War III selling consoles. The opening quote is, "People have questioned if PlayStation 3 had a "true system seller", most of the greatest games on PS3 have had good launches." Uh... No they haven't. Blind fanboyism along with dishonest journalism. A toxic mix.

And I thought that Sony had the oldest Gamers of the Big 3. Guess not.

Good job, xboxer360.com.

On topic:
My assumption is that everyone is being tight-lipped on the titles until E3 to make sure that they blow the doors off of the place. In my opinion, a Natal embedded version of Killer Instinct is incoming, a new game from Rare, and a plethora of Wii-type games that will be included with the hardware.

So everyone should be patient.
And PS3 Fans still have a few months to attack every Natal article with as much fear as you possibly can muster. :-)

Because if Natal works... This could get ugly for PS3.

NO ONE CARES about the "Arc", PS3's 2010 lineup, or the Playstation 3 in general. Just look at the Game Charts from last week from America, UK, and even Japan. PS3 Games are INVISIBLE other than Modern Warfare 2. LOL...

So you just keep telling yourself along with these pro-PS3 websites differently. And the REAL Gamers will continue to snatch up XBOX360 and Wii titles by the truckloads.

By the way... How's MAG, White Knight Chronicles, and Heavy Rain doing so far in 2010? How'd they chart so far? Sad.

Lou-Cipher5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

The evil Microsoft spell has been lifted. At least for some.

tehReaper5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

Lou-Cipher, you talk of an "evil spell" from Microsoft, yet you go on to say that thetruth2009 is brainwashed. Just take a look at your own comments, and tell me who is brainwashed. Oh wait, you can't, your fanboy googles will justify them.

You're not superior because you own a PS3, get over yourself. There's over 30 million other PS3 owners and you're an example of the ones that give it a bad name.

"At Least For Some"

Feel better now?

@Jason 360

you are right.

I am afraid of Natal.

I'm terrified that Microsoft is going to take away from their hardcore gaming, so they can make eye toy games.

Microsoft is already seriously lacking 1st party studios, and now they are asking the ones they do have to make casual games. Hardcore games will slowly become extinct if Natal succeeds.

So yes, I fear Natal.

Young Capwn5196d ago

Natal will suck, Arc will be much better but they both will fail.

DARK WITNESS5196d ago

well, I kind of agree with them...

I consider myself semi hardcore i guess. rpg's, shooters, racing games.. on top of that although i own both consoles i am more of a 360 fan, still i have to give props to sony. they have at least shown us some hardcore games that could use it. MS has not even done that... just the usual hit the ball crap and what not.

maybe i am just loosing my creative spark here, but I really can't see how natal would be used in a truly compelling way in a game like halo reach or anything of that level.

as far as i am concerned they just want to jump on the wii bandwagon. maybe its a harsh way of looking at it as it's still early days, but thats how i feel right now. it's up to them to convince me otherwise.

Kinect Technical Specifications & Xbox 360 Requirements Revealed

The most notable reveal would perhaps by the requirements of the Xbox 360 console itself. While Microsoft has insisted since the original unveiling of Kinect at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2009, then known as Project NATAL, that the device would be compatible with all Xbox 360 consoles, the revelation of a dedicated port included on the newly redesigned Xbox 360 model has sparked rumours of incompatibility, which were quickly debunked.

odd, i was led to believe it lacked an internal processor and so also needed a core to itself, if not 1-2 processing threads.

Wikkid6665075d ago

The article says nothing about whether the processor is internal or it uses the 360s.

darthv725074d ago

Also, the notion of a dedicated port really lends nothing to the idea of older units being incompatible. I believe the kinect port is a custom usb port (think the original xbox controller ports) but one that will feed power and data.

Older models will require a splitter that will run off a single usb port (prob the back one) that will work for the data but not the power. That is why they keep saying it will have an external power for those systems.

As for the processor, combo of both makes sense. Using 360 cpu/gpu power to help calculate the finished product on screen along with the cpu in the kinect.

Remember people...this is not a cheap usb web cam (like the original live vision).

Inside_out5075d ago (Edited 5075d ago )

They say they are using 10-15% of one 360 P4 cores. I know that the Kinect we see today is a watered down version of the patented tech they bought and own. Maybe one day the " real " tech will be cost effective. It still is very impressive tech even without a super computer running it.

wicked5075d ago

No, the previous artical said they removed a processor, but I would guess that it had more than 1 to start with. So it will have some form of processor still within it. Arm9 or Cortex M3, all dirt cheap now but powerful.

IdleLeeSiuLung5075d ago

Does it matter? They showed Forza Kinect that looked amazing working with Kinect real time!

callahan095075d ago

Are you just talking about how the graphics are able to look amazing while working with Kinect? If that's what you're talking about, ok. The game itself, though, well... I think I'll stick with the real Forza, with an Xbox 360 control pad. The limited-control Kinect Forza they showed doesn't look like it's worth any attention, in my opinion. Why would anyone want to control a car like that, with hands held out and holding onto nothing, with no control over acceleration or braking? Just seems totally pointless to me.

CrawFail5075d ago

lol real time? I don't quite think it was real time.

Bigpappy5074d ago

You guy know that the motion tech is from prime sense right? Please go to their web site primesense.com,and have a look at what they say the tech can do. It can read fingers well enough to type with each finger and can be used while sitting. No one ever said it has to scan the entire body to work. What we have seen from kinect so far is not all it is capable of.

Reading these specs and trying to compare them to PSeye is pointless, because they are different types of cameras and provide completely differnt types of info to the consoles (Kinect is a 3D camera and provides 3D images. PSeye is a 2D camera and provides 2D images). Per Primsense, the camera is capable of providing video at 60fps, but the 3D is 30fps. The specs for 2 players active is for full body scans. There are no specs given for people sitting and just using their hands.

This tech is obviously a work in progress and has yet to be fleshed out. I suggest all you N4G Kinect experts, research before you post you doom and gloom so you atleast have solid facts for you skepticism. You can also relax and see what M$ does with the tech insteat of pretending to know more that the people developing the tech.

IdleLeeSiuLung5073d ago

The game was available for people to try on the show floor at E3 so yes it was real time. Wetter you like it for Forza or not wasn't my point.

So pretty much the same spec as the PS Eye, although I thought the eye went up to 120 Hertz...

Theonik5075d ago

The eye goes to 60Hz i think. Regardless the eye should be capable to do any Kinect shown so far with less lag. (they revolve on a 2D axis and only use the depth tracking to separate players.) I am really disappointed by the tech and how it is utilised thus far.

shoddy5075d ago

More or less powerful we need to see the product.
So far it seem the pseye can do anything kinect can do.
2d 3d I not yet see the advantage.

IHateYouFanboys5074d ago

no, the PSEye cannot do 3D tracking. Kinect can.

the PSEye does 2D motion recognition, Kinect does 3D motion tracking. they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things.

Sheikh Yerbouti5074d ago

Going from alkaline to lithium was a significant step for batteries, but at the end of the day it is just a battery. PSEye and Kinect are kind of the same way. At the end of the day it is a game camera - with camera games.

IHateYouFanboys5074d ago

@Sheikh Yerbouti: your example is not really on the same scale of difference as PSEye/Kinect.

a better example using batteries would be the jump from standard batteries to rechargable batteries. theyre both doing the same thing - being batteries - but one of them does things that the other one cannot possibly do, which is be recharged and used again. it does everything the standard battery does, and more.

Kinect does everything the PSEye does (2D motion recognition), and more (3D motion tracking). no amount of software updates can change the hardware in the PSEye, and the hardware is not capable of 3D motion tracking as it lacks infra-red.

IaMs125074d ago

Yes i see your point but how you guys feel about the PS3 can be said the same way.

The PS3 may produce better graphics and be more powerful then the Xbox360, but by the end of they day its still only a console. Also inferior to PC :)

PirosThe4th5074d ago

... PSeye can do 3d as you say... even eyetoy... they used shadows and other stuff to recognize it.
Move is also 3d...

Sheikh Yerbouti5074d ago

Lithium batteries are rechargeable batteries.

Kinect isn't a true 3D camera - it can't render a picture of your butt if you are always facing front. It makes an approximate 3D model using visual cues. The PSEye can do the same, although it will be cruder.

Plus, just because the technology is different, doesn't necessarily mean gameplay will be.

@lams12
Yes, you're right. Similarly Kinect will have some good games, different from PSEye, only if Microsoft makes them. But they haven't made games too different from the PSEye.

Theonik5074d ago

Which is what i meant from the start. None of the games they have shown so far could not have been on the PS Eye.

Sheikh Yerbouti5074d ago (Edited 5074d ago )

Only room for two anyway when you think about it...
but it can keep track of six people during a game in regards to facial recognition. I think that's impressive.

I would love to have Kinect built into my laptop, so only I can get in even without a password. Why is Microsoft wasting this on the XBox again?

Ilikegames765074d ago

still couldn't play it sitting down. Honestly, some guys are so easily impressed by copy cat technology.

blackpanther255074d ago

i was at the engadget show and kudo showed its 3d tracking and when two people where on screen......one person would be red while the other would be green.......but as soon as a third person steped into the camera view two people automatically turned gray and it couldnt read their movements well.

what i took away from that event is that the kinect is pretty kool but for right now it can only work with two people(they could still be working on it)

Hey Microsoft, Where Are The Core Games For Kinect?

Meodia writes, "So about a year ago when Project Natal was first starting off, many Xbox 360 and even other gamers were worried about the future of their console. A local shovelware dumping ground didn't sound quite appealing and Natal looked like it would serve extra servings of it. But Microsoft reassured us, holding our hands and telling us that everything would be alright. Since then, nothing has changed. After that "conference" at E3, we were shown nothing but how to please little girls."
