GotGame: Ragnarok DS Review

GotGame:

The variety and customization of the job system is about the only redeeming feature of Ragnarok DS. Its fatal flaw is the poorly implemented, much-too-small overworld, which makes players run through the same dungeons and locations over and over again, often times just for the sake of repetition. You'll need time and much patience with the inane storyline to get through this portable version, and it only gives the original highly successful Ragnarok MMORPG a bad rap. Though it may be cool for players of the original online PC game to enjoy the character sprites and mythology from that game in their handhelds, anyone else would do best to remember that the Nintendo DS platform has no shortage of superior RPG experiences.

GamingUnion.net: Ragnarok DS Review

GamingUnion.net: "All in all Ragnarok DS is a pretty standard entry into the RPG genre on the Nintendo DS. In spite of a few issues involving sound and the lack of a story for anyone beyond fans of Ragnarok Online, the gameplay mechanics are actually pretty good. It's certainly not a classic, but for those who are itching for a new RPG to play on their DS, it might be worth checking out."

Hmm, I think I'll actually give this a try, if the rental place ever gets it

It's just a shame when the story it's that good in an RPG.

Not enough good ds games, I'll have to give this one a shot!

Selyah5170d ago

I'm kinda thinking of giving this a play, looks ok but still not too sure.

This game is OK. The gameplay can be repetitive and annoying at times, but can also be fun and a bit addictive, too.

There is an error in this review, however. Multiplayer does not require friend codes, although if you have friends, you can either play locally or over wifi together.

Wow -- this one fell through the cracks for me. I can't believe I missed it!

Diehard GameFAN: Ragnarok DS Review (NDS)

Ragnarok DS turned out to be a fun little offering. It definitely takes the PC RPG "point and click" style game play and turns it into "point and tap," which is not only refreshing but also has me wondering why this hasn't happened very often, if at all, with other DS RPG's. The game's graphics and soundtrack are very nicely done and it's nice to see an RPG push aside the typical high fantasy tracks for something like the techno, trance and rave beats one will find in this game's dungeons. Online multiplayer works nicely and without any real lag, and it's a great way to simulate a mini MMORPG feeling. That's not to say Ragnarok DS doesn't have its flaws. The game can get quite dull with the sidequests that revolve entirely on grinding until a monster finally drops an item you need to move on, and there are a few gameplay and balance issues, those several of those can be avoided if you stick to close combat instead of ranged. Overall, Ragnarok DS is worth checking out whether or not you've played the MMORPG. It does have its issues but the good does outweigh the bad here.
