Infendo hands-on: Metroid Other M, a mix of Prime and Ninja Gaiden in contextual 3D

Infendo: Space. Wreckage. An storm of asteroids or possibly energy particles, destroying the remainder. And in the midst of the chaos and nothingness, a familiar-looking yellow-haired child encased in a sphere of energy, rendered in beautiful CG. Cut.

"To be honest, as a control scheme the first-person mode is somewhat problematic. Because the player loses the ability to move as soon as first-person is engaged and it’s not easy or practical to flip the Wiimote from one-handed vertical operation to two-handed horizontal on the fly, it’s only really good for scanning objects and sniper fire, at the end of a long hallway. But in the game’s very first boss fight, I needed missiles – so I had to do just that, flipping back and forth. I beat the creature on my first try – a towering, purple bug-filled menace immune to normal fire – but only after losing loads of health."

TBH, this is my biggest concern as well. But Project M set out to be different from the Prime games and return to more Super Metroid-type playing, so that's what I'm expecting.

But c'mon, a complaint on losing loads of health? In Metroid? In a boss fight? Dude, if you want easy boss fights, don't play this series. I just finished a run through Fusion last night, and even though I've played the game a few times, I still got stuck on Nightmare.

If i could only pick one I'd go with super metroid.

Best (for me) would be the first Metroid Prime. It was simply amazing the first time i played it. so deep and challenging while also turning the series completely into something that felt new and fresh.

Worst (for me) is most likely Other M. I can appreciate what they were trying to go for but it just felt flat and played out.

Looking at the rest of the list, I never played Federation Force but i have played the rest. Pinball is still one of my favorites to play now and then.

Ranking the Metroid Games from Worst to Best

From Xfire: "Is Super Metroid still as super as it once was in 1994? If not, which Metroid game is better than the influential title?"

I look forward to the day any game beats that Super, Metroid or not.
Hollow Knight come damn near close to knocking Super Metroid from the top of my list, that’s a huge achievement for such a small team.

The problem for me is I’ve been waiting for a 2D Metroid that beats Super but I don’t think I’ll ever see that day. I still play the original 1-2 times a year and a few randomiser plays.

Fully agree with the list and all points it makes for each game. I’m expecting Dread to fit in the middle of that list but I’m happy to be wrong about that.

In my opinion Other M is better than Federation Force
