Valve: 'We messed up on PS3'

Valve has told CVG that it didn't put its "best foot forward" on PS3 with The Orange Box - and that it is working to "get better" on the system.

make a PS3 exclusive so you can actually push the hardware or GTFO.

flankhim5173d ago

Making anything exculsive is just stupid from a business standpoint. Would you want to have one customer or have two customers?

5173d ago
PotNoodle5173d ago

Valve are a PC developer, they wouldn't ever make a console exclusive game.

Model5173d ago

I forgive you Valve. But not Gabe, he needs more cake and dont tell him its a lie.

Brazil5173d ago

...Or they can just stick to PC, because that's where game technology is ACTUALLY advanced and refined.

thehitman5173d ago

Its only better for mutli if your pushing shovelware or average games. If you want real cognition exclusives are the best way to go. Halo/Gear/UC/Res/GoW/GT/ME dont think would be big name titles if they were mutliplatform and definitely the ps3 titles wouldnt be as good.

Bnet3435173d ago

Valve making a console exclusive would be stupid. They should stick to making PC games, that's what they excel at the most.

deadreckoning6665173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

"Hey Valve, make a PS3 exclusive so you can actually push the hardware or GTFO."

Ur comment makes no sense whatsoever. 95% of the games on PS3 DON'T push the hardware at all. By your logic, ur saying that every developer who works on the PS3 has to push the hardware to its limits or not make any games at all.

If it were up to YOU, then we wouldn't have excellent multiplatform games on the PS3 like Arkham Asylum, Bioshock, or Bad Company 2.

Why can't Valve just make a multiplatform game thats equal on both consoles? I'd buy Left 4 Dead 3 in a HEARTBEAT if it came to the PS3 and it worked as well as the 360 version.

"screw valve dont even bother making a game for the ps3 almost 90% of ps3 owners dont care for them anymore."

Id love to see where you got ur PROOF of that.

na2ru15173d ago

But never forgetten.
Never see Valve the same way as I did when I enjoyed HL 1 and 2.

Solidus187-SCMilk5173d ago

their ports to xbox and ps3 are just for extra money which they really dont need.

I get valve games on my PC because Source games get way better support on PC.

nefertis5173d ago

LMAO thats some funny sh!T.No thanks valve. Playb3yond

gaffyh5173d ago

Tbh, this is MAJOR damage control on Valve's part. Gabe made an ignorant comment that alienated the entire PS3 community, and he expected the PS3 to fail. But now it's selling extremely well, and that community has grown to over 33 million gamers, and PS3 exclusives are getting a lot of attention, meaning even more sales for PS3 systems in the future.

Now they are trying to build bridges, and it's a start, just make sure Gabe learns to STFU from now on and the PS3 community will forgive you Valve.

Jinxstar5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

Gaffyh

I will never buy a valve game for my PS3. Gabe already dug his own grave with that. There's too much other good stuff for my PS3 to get anything from valve. If I were to ever buy anything of theirs it would be for my PC anyway. Too little too late honestly.

baum5173d ago

You're late in the game, Valve. Hurry up and make a PS3 Home version of Steam, and all will be forgotten.

ABizzel15173d ago

OMG. How the mighty have fallen. Sweet Justice Indeed.

SullyDrake5173d ago

I have no respect for Gabe, who single-handedly destroyed Valve's reputation among PS3 fans. Although I would laugh if he released an apology note.

He probably shed a few pounds sweating after the new GOWIII GT footage.

Tinted Eyes5173d ago

Notice how good the PS3 is doing lately, now Valve is apologizing and saying they might work on it eventually.

Its nice to see one of the biggest PS3 haters admit they were wrong.

DarkBlood5173d ago

@Deathro

lol i see what you did there

Hellsvacancy5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

Guess that confirms Left 4 Dead 3 on the PS3, id happily welcome a new Half Life game, but id more then likely rent, Valve hav never really blown me away wid there games Pc, 360 wotever, the 1st Half Life game was good but i played that goin on 10 years ago

Chubear5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

... uhmmmmmmm.

I mean, unless you have the memory of plantar, who can forget the most outrageous outright left hook to the jaw slugs Valve's entire management line has laid down on the PS3.. and now, after the FUD didn't kill the PS3 but rather it's growth is rapid, it's now "Oh, yeah, we've always love the PS3 so we'll now get some games rollin' out on it"

LOLZ! Egg on face FTMFW! XD

THIS courtesy of the very diligent, loyal and intensely STRONG minded Playstation fanbase that didn't let the insane FUD - of galactical proportions - about the PS3 deter them from supporting true current gen gaming and potential for even better gaming experiences in the future and now we see the rabid naysayers doing 180 turns.

ALL HAIL THE PLAYSTATION FANBASE! - HAIL!

Dance5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

Theres no guarantee it would sell well enough to begin with so why bother?

xabmol5173d ago

Naw, it's one of those things that makes you go, "HAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahah ahahHAHAHAHAaha" xD

But really...

The only thing I want from Valve on the PS3 is MORE PORTAL!!

Chubear5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

I hear you to a certain degree but I have to say that though I personally couldn't give a rats butt if L4D is on the PS3 or not but Half Life and Portal have been insane gems for me and though they were never at risk of ever not being on the PS3, it's great to see a naysayer developer like Valve eat crow.

@2.0

That's an OLD tired argument. Gamers on the PS3 see that they have BOTH graphics AND gameplay to high quality levels. The PS3 base does not have to settle for one or the other. That's sooooo last gen.

Lifendz5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

back in 2007 your comments really had me wondering if I made the right move. This was before the onslaught of Sony AAA exclusives and at a time when 3rd parties seemed to just give PS3 owners whatever they felt like giving.

But now, well it's obvious how different today is from yesterday. And I see this statement and wonder what's the rationale behind it. It would be one thing if you simply claimed to lack the necessary resources to develop on the system. As a "small" PC dev that might go over since the PS3 architecture is so different from the PC. But the fact that Gabe has just been downright indignant in his views on the system really make me question the sudden change of heart. Heck, just recently the word from Valve was that the 360 community was head and shoulders above the PSN community. So, again, one has to wonder what brought on this change of heart.

It's one thing to read fanboy comments from someone that's not in the industry and quite another for a dev to make them. Not saying I won't give whatever you put out a look now that you're going to "do better." I just hope in the future you really put forth your "best efforts" on a system before declaring that it should be recalled.

evrfighter5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

You guys know that Gabe isn't the one saying these things right?

They aren't even talking about making console games. Chet is pretty much apologizing again for the Orange Box port and that's pretty much it. The decision to work on the ps3 will come from Gabe himself.

You guys will only disappoint yourselves if you keep trying to read too much in between the lines. Getting down to it Valve are in no financial trouble. To have their dev's start learning the ps3 now would be fruitless. There is no gain to be made from ancient tech in 2010.

Not when they they have a fanbase and a community bigger than LIVE and PSN.

@Lifendz

Imo I think some devs at Valve caught consolitis and believe there are greener pastures. Chet has quite a bit of pull at Valve and so I do believe he can say things in this nature without Gabe's backing.

There isn't really a problem with this but as DICE have found out. Turning their backs on the pc community was the probably the worst decision they ever made. Without a proper competitor on the pc. DICE pretty much gave IW the fps throne withot a fight. Now look where DICE is. Doing everything in their power to appease the pc crowd to try and reclaim some of their former glory.

I think most pc gamers knew/know the day Valve wanted to try their hand at consoles is coming. It's just sad because now we would have to wait for Valve to fail at the console like DICE did. Should Gabe decide to give the green light of course.

Technological development is at a crawl this gen because of developers thinking the grass the greener. Heck the game with the best graphics out was created 3 years ago. When I say this you know exactly what game I'm talking about as it needs no introduction Every ps3 blogger site tries to compare an upcoming exclusive to it only to fail miserably when they're compared side by side.

Lifendz5173d ago

Maybe Gabe is too embarrassed after taking such a strident stand against the PS3? Maybe Valve is trying to make nice while allowing him to save face?

BYE5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

@flankhim

One customer doesn't automatically turn into two just because a game goes multi.

Exclusive usually means better publisher support and often better game quality. At the end of the day, quality is what customers are really attracted to.

BYE5173d ago

A little late to the party Valve, aren't you.

we won5173d ago

You guys do know this is about Orange box right?

Ahmay5173d ago

they won't make a difference... they should stick to multiplats... not sure if they can think of something that would exceed 9 gigs of memo...

RememberThe3575173d ago

"Some of that will come from us learning and getting better. Before we can go onto the PS3 again, we want to make sure we're better at developing for it."

That's a general statement about development. It's not solely referring to Orange Box but how they want to make sure that they know what they're doing before they put one of their products on the PS3.

UnwanteDreamz5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

So you think they are going to ignore 30mil plus potential customers for the remainder of this gen?

mastiffchild5173d ago

Personally, I don't really care for the idea of Valve ports to PS3 anyway. I'm not knocking Valve's games at all-on PC they're great but I fear the terrifyingly weak EA port of The Orange Box has allowed a few sins on the 360.

I didn't play TOB on the PS3 but own it for PC and 360 and just like L4D1 and 2 I find Valve's 360 efforts a little too weak compared to other devs PC to 360 ports for comfort. I'm concerned on two levels:1, That 360 only gamers are getting the wrong idea that Valve care about them more than PS3 gamers when the truth, imo, is the games they offer them are only there because it's quick and relatively easy to port from PC to 360. Valve make easy, fast cash from them but don't support them anything like as well as their PC versions and the quality lags well behind the likes of devs like Bioware when their games arrive on console.

And, 2,This messing about with 360 ports which do little but fill Valve's pockets while we pay more for less(in content, quality, features and community support)with their console games. the net result is the game everyone wants them to make is delayed, delayed and procrastinated over ad nauseum. Cut the 360 ports, don't add PS3 ports and just get HL2 Ep3 finished for PC FFS!

Sure, both consoles are up to date(no matter how ropey the PS version was and how much too far behind the PC game 360's was)on the HL2 saga as we stand and I doubt EA will allow them to miss out on the multi platform riches on offer when HL2 Ep3 finally comes around but juast get the PC game finished. We can talk about pots later on and , if they're as close t the PC version as your competitor's manage then brilliant, get them out too!

Anyway, noticing how average the 360 version of both TOB and L4D looked and played for me I'm not in any hurry to play any more of their games on a console(even if I do think I'd like to play them with a DS3)and pay more for the priveledge of getting less. They still excel on PC and, imo, should care a lot more about their console output but the way they're saying the EA port to PS3 of TOB was weak makes me feel they're happy with what they offer us elsewhere on console and, really, they shouldn't be when others offer their games in much more similar to PC form.

Thankfully their games play so well that people still enjoy them on 360 but I don't believe half as many would if they realised the massive chasm between Valve on PC and Valve on 360. It's not even like the Source engine is pushing ANYTHING on PC beyond the best other devs manage on consoles anyway! Did their seemingly anti PS3 stance and comments endear them so much to the 360 only gamer that they think Valve "has their back" in some way? I don't think they do and feel they put so much more care into pleasing their long term PC fans(of which I remain one)that the consoles only ever get a case of "that'll do" from them as they just see the ports as quick cash.

Hell, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong but going back to L4D on PC after playing it on 360 for a week or so really made the DOUBLE I paid for it stick in my throat. I don't want to feel like that again and don't like feeling Valve might see console gamers as little more than an easy cheque that they have to try very little to cash, sadly.

So, and I'll get hammered for saying it(again)I don't want ANY more of the current quality Valve ports to console but would kill for the follow up to Ep2 on PC anytime but if they suddenly start putting the same care into their console games brilliant-thin is I just don't see it when this intimates they're actually happy, themselves with the quality of their 360 ports. Neither 360 nor PS3 gamers should be too interested at this news from Chet, imo, until their console attitude as a whole changes. I'll be interested to see just how close Rage is to it's PC version when iD get it out later this year too as, mayeb, if they can do a great job it might spur Valve into similar console efforts.

Gabe, and some others including Chet, made their own bed with PS3 gamers by saying some unnecessary and unprofessional things about both the system and the community and , to this day, it puzzles me just why they did it when nobody else ever felt the need. A side effect was that some 360 gamers might think Valve are pro 360 in some way but I don't see that at all. they remain very much PC devs(and great ones at that) who make great games for PC and port them to the convenient console for a bit of extra cash. With my console gamers hat on I wonder, really, is that enough? Esp for a dev of their standing, is that really acceptable? And if it sin't, just why should PS3 gamers now turn any cartwheels about them talking up PS3 ports in future?

Oh well, I'm sure I'll have annoyed everyone by saying what I have(if anyone read it!) Too long really but Valve upset me over this stuff as console gamers deserve them to try just as hard as PC gamers do-considering they pay more it's only fair considering they'll always get lesser gfx and always get far fewer features, of course they do! So, an even hand on the effort and care fronts between PC and console or, preferably, just do the PC games as well as humanly possible. That's my opinion in any case as we all deserve value-even from some of the most inspired developers and even on platforms they might not hold quite as close to their own hearts.

I really wish they'd all kept quiet over the PS3 thing, though, as it's rumbled on and on and no one looks good out of it all.Least of all Gabe and Valve-and, hell, allowing 360 gamers to import some L4D mods for their version from the PC(like UT3 on PS3 does)would have been a great way to start being fairer wouldn't it? Wouldn't even have cost Valve a great deal as it's community made content either and would have added some value t a game which at full retail on 360 I bought for £45!

ikkokucrisis5173d ago

All they've released in the past 3 years is L4D and L4D:exapansion...
I think they've become a company that's more interested in their Steam digital distribution system than making games. How sad

SilentNegotiator5173d ago

How can Valve "Get better" on the PS3 if they never do anything with it?

morganfell5173d ago

Sorry Valve, PS3 owners do not want a ported, 2 year old game. Go exclusive or drop dead.

Foliage5173d ago

So after years of the PS3 killing the 360 in sales, Valve wants to follow the money. Too late, you're a crappy developer clinging on to crappy dated technology.

We don't want your P.O.S. games.

thesummerofgeorge5173d ago

Bash the system and the entire PSN community, make shîtty half åss ports for the PS3, now you want our business? You clowns get none of my money.

solar5173d ago (Edited 5173d ago )

"Some of that will come from us learning and getting better. Before we can go onto the PS3 again, we want to make sure we're better at developing for it."

sounds good for you guys who dont game on PC, where Valve titles are their best.

some butt hurt ppl in this thread :D

marinelife95173d ago

I'm willing to give Valve a try. If..... they come out with a game better than Heavy Rain/God of War 3/Uncharted 2...

Persistantthug5173d ago

But I actually own the game and still play it. I bought the game about a year ago when I bought my PS3 and I didn't notice any real or severe problems with the game.

Plenty of other People still play TF2 as well.

I guess it must have been fixed a long time ago....but it's funny that no one ever talks about that.
*shrug*

thesummerofgeorge5173d ago

Butt hurt? Hardly, I think many of us including myself prefer to give our business to developers that first: have standards regardless of which console they're developing for, not just their personal favorite. Second: Don't insult their prospective customers.

They're a bunch of low class adult-fanboys, I'm not so hard up for a game that I would support a company I loath.

deafwing5173d ago

dude .. where do you find all the time to type all that? My Lord.

Any who we all know that devs are lazy when it comes to development work on the ps3 because you can hear the "WAM-BULANCE" coming a mile away screaming

"ITS TOOOOOOOOOOOOO HARRRRRRRRRRD" "ITS TOOOOOOOOOO HARD!" LOL :D

The Lazy One5173d ago

I'm curious. Do people not understand what a quote is? If you quote something, they have to actually have said that thing.

"We messed up on PS3," was never said, and it should be changed to "We thought that the Orange Box didn't put our best foot forward with the PS3 community" or "We... didn't put our best foot forward with the PS3 community."

At the very least, the quotes should be removed from the title.

Dev8 ing5173d ago

Why does everything always have to be about sales and customers? Can't a company make a game and maximize a platform to create the best version possible of that game? But this is beside the point. Valve is not a company that does this. Their games try to cater to the most amount of people possible.

JD_Shadow5173d ago

Do you wonder how this talk from Valve is awfully close to GDC10 (or whatever it's being called now)? It could be just a coincidence, but this is the second time Chet has said something about PS3 development to someone. I'm starting to wonder about not only the frequency of these, but also the timing of them.

Raz5173d ago

Quasi. As in: sort of. Kinda. But not really.

You can see where this developer is headed. Oblivion or a buyout. Coasting on old successes, refusal to learn anything new, and making dumbass comments about a particular platform. Until it dawns that they might previously have stood to make some money off of it.

..Oops. Too late now, suckas!

jessupj5173d ago

Sorry valve, you've already dug your grave. No ammount of sucking up and damage control are going to make me forget your pathetic, childish fanboyism. GTFO

Sarcasm5173d ago

I think once they saw GoWIII, they realized how powerful the PS3 really is.

ll_UNDERSCORE_ll5173d ago

read the articles first posted comment it's very very true and humorous , viral bubbles for him/her.

evrfighter5173d ago

the amount of comments and degrees this article has gotten where chet never even says "we messed up on the ps3"

goes to show how badly and how desperate the ps3 fanboys want a valve game. Quite the show we have going on here today.

StanLee5173d ago

Chet Faliszek needs to shut up and stop speaking for Valve. He's a writer and nothing more. Doug Lombardi smacks his head every time he reads a comment attributed to Chet.

edhe5173d ago

That with all the previous Valve hate the OP up there now wants exclusive Valve games and gets 87+ agrees.

hypocritical much?

MNicholas5173d ago

Valve's incompetence is obvious.

morganfell5173d ago

Here is my main problem with these idiotic comments from jackass Valve in this article. None of the main issues to date have been because Valve didn't understand the PS3. Orange Box wasn't even made by them so it wasn't that they didn't know the PS3. That was EA not knowing the PS3.

The Valve problem begins and ends with these incessant attacks on the PS3 and the PS3 community.

If you are going to apologize at least show some guts you spineless bastards and start with an apology for something you actually did. Stop making it sound like a technical issue and have that fat sandwich eating Gabe get up out of that 20 ton Jabba the Hutt chair he lays in and have him issue a sincere apology.

This is the PS3 community and if you are going to continue to act like a pack of liars you won't get anywhere.

captain-obvious5172d ago

so is left 4 dead coimng to the PS3 anytime soon ??

starvinbull5172d ago (Edited 5172d ago )

Not too sure they'd ever make an exclusive for any Sony console but it's good to hear sensible words from Valve and I think it will do them some good if they ever take the plunge on PS3.

Episode 3? I hope so.

so this pretty much confirms that Valve is back on PS3 development?

nightelfmohawk5173d ago

I don't really care if the are. Valve is a one-trick pony that only knows how to make SHOOTANs and games with first-person perspectives. The only Valve game that really impressed me was Portal, tbqh, and the lady who was largely responsible for that game no longer works at Valve.

led10905173d ago

one trick pony? ONE TRICK PONY?????!!!!! Half Life, Counter strike, Half life 2, Counter Strike Source, Team fortress, Team fortress 2, Portal and the HL episodes. One trick pony? I don't think so. Its ohk to give a person the treatment he deserves for saying something insanely stupid like Gabe did. But to not give someone the credit they deserve is just blasphemy. And i did not even mention Left 4 Dead even though personally i love it.

Valve doesn't focus on graphics like PS3 games they sacrifice graphics for gameplay to make their games fun for the community but L4D2 does have one of the best graphics this gen.

ZombieAutopsy5173d ago

you obviously only play valve games on consoles their games look pretty decent on a beast as5 rig

LastDays5173d ago

someone with a halo avatar thinks graphics need to be sacrificed for a game to be fun? You don't say. Buy a wii if you believe such things. At least then you get to play galaxy 2.

How Valve released five of its greatest games in a single day

The year is 2007. Console owners tap their fingers in barely contained impatience. For years they have been starved of Valve's delicious, full-bodied courses, forced to watch from the bleachers as Valve mixes a unique blend of kinetic first-person with extraordinary tech. Besides a brief dalliance with the original Xbox and the PlayStation 2 - which produce pale imitations of its best work - Valve has remained faithful to the PC.

And then, in a flash, five of them arrive at once; neatly packaged morsels for a new generation reared on Microsoft's & later Sony's consoles. Five games, all in one orange box. Valve serves the PC too, for it is October 18 - a day of celebration - and everyone should feast.

Valve didn't really "release" 5 of its greatest games in a single day, Half-Life 2 came out 3 years before The Orange Box. In no other context do we talk about a port being the "release" of a game.

Little cheeky to talk about it when you know we're still waiting for Half Life 3...the Orange Box included Episode 2 and is still left unfinished story wise to this day.

At this rate we better get a second Orange Box. Half Life 3, Half Life Remake (Black Mesa Mod), TF3 or L4D3 and the HL spin offs like Blue Shift.

Don't know what valve are going to do with Half Life after Mike Laidlaw posted the short version of Episode 3 in August and changed the names and genders.
