10 Most Important Games Of The Decade

This post is not intended to be as bold of the title, I would not defend these games to my death as being the formidable list of the decade but here is my list of games, weather I like it or not that have made the biggest impact in the gaming world over the last decade.

Such a hard thing to come up with 10 games that are the most important.

I would throw in Gears of War for its use of the cover system.

I also think Mirror's Edge deserves some recognition.

And sorry, but I really think Farmville deserves something as well.

I guess I would add in Indigo Prophecy/Heavy Rain also.

Man, so many to choose from...

I think the first game I've ever seen using the cover system was Rogue Trooper, which came out almost a year before Gears of War did. Yes, Gears popularized the cover system, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the first to implement it like most people claimed.

Halo defined online gaming for consoles

I remember Kill Switch on PS2 had a cover system about 4 years before GeoW did.

Great list of games in the article. I just bought the Orange Box for PS3. Looking forward to trying HL2 and Portal.

the impact Halo brought onto gaming as a whole, not just online gaming.

Rechargeable health
Successful implementation of vehicles
Functional matchmaking
Online customization
Forge
Theater

I could go on and on

Honestly, what did Halo bring to the table that was new?

One thing: It made console multiplayer mainstream.

Is that new and innovative? No. It just means that console noobs were stuck in the dark ages of single player when PC gamers had been competing online since...always.

If Halo really contributed anything gameplay-wise, it set a standard of extremely easy, noobish mechanics. Regenerating shields? Unload half a clip to kill someone? Virtually no team cooperation? Yep, that's Halo. HALO WAS POPULAR BECAUSE NOOBS WERE GOOD AT IT! Thanks for ruining FPS, Halo.

Watch even the best Halo player try to pick up Counter-Strike or Unreal Tournament. Now that would be funny.

Halo invented the golden tripod of FPS games, separate buttons for grenades and melee usage. They also eliminated the magic backpack and limited the amount of weapons you could carry to create more tactical decisions with the weapons you use.

Let's also not forget that Halo perfected vehicle combat and introduced the rechargeable shield.

Halo 2 introduced rechargeable health and the innovative online party system which every console FPS game tries to mimic.

Halo has always needed skill and teamwork to win

what so noobish about regenerating health ? it's like it's regenerate immediately, it takes time.

The aiming in Halo is way better than other games. at least you don't need to shoot randomly like in CS to get a headshot and everyone in CS community oh thats guy is lucky oh this guy always get a lucky shot

that rarely happens in Halo

i bet if you brought a CS team vs a Halo team in a Halo match, the CS team won't do anything but the Halo team can do something in a CS match cuz they are used to aim good and team work or at least they get some no scope kills

Although killswitch had the a similar cover system, it no where near popularized it to the point where it is used consistently with many 3rd person shooters today: UC, UC2, Dark Sector, etc...

Gears really made it work, especially as a generation starter.

Halo is the sole reason the XBOX is a success, period.

Any other game on that list, if it was never made, the console where said game appeared would still be healthy! The XBOX wouldn't, if anyone disagrees with that, has no concept of real business.

and might I add, it was my first M rated game that I played and liked.

jamesgtaiv5176d ago (Edited 5176d ago )

I agree with gta 3 being number 1. It wasnt the first gta ive ever played but it was the first pc game i had ever played. It has inspired countless titles from saints row (obviously) to assassins creed. Not to mention it really brought the crime genre to life.

Have to agree with the first post though. Gears deserves to be on that list due to its cover system. (that gtaiv pretty much used)

Sorry if you don't like halo, but it defined console what fps's should be for the last decade.

It pretty much kept the entire xbox brand afloat.

And the 3rd installment provides the largest feature set of any online console experience. Things like forge, theater, co-op, splitscreen, matchmaking, screenshots, etc. Things most online games still don't have.
