Why Heavy Rain Beats Mass Effect 2 in Emotional Payoffs

Split-Screen: "Having completed Mass Effect 2, passing the suicide mission with only one casualty, I sat through the game's admittedly short ending and let it all sink in. Every thing I had worked for – the upgrades, the battles, the conversations – had all been for this moment. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Not with the game itself, easily one of Bioware's best, but in the payoff to the amount of emotion invested in."

Of course it does, Heavy Rain is more emotional than most games available. Mass Effect 2, whilst a great game, didn't really have much of an emotional aspect to it, which is normal because most games don't. Though MGS4 had a great ending.

Simon_Brezhnev5197d ago

Mass Effect 2 had no type of emotional effect

Nike5197d ago

When you get into it, Mass Effect 2 is really more about the action and the team building - and of course, the final mission. That's your emotional payoff there, and it's intense, amazing, exhilarating...but it's not the ending. And man, did I hate the ending. Cliff-hangers deserve to die lonely deaths. :-/

GameOn5197d ago

I found the first ME to be a lot stronger on the emotion front actually. It gave that shiver up the spine feeling in a few places where as ME2 didn't at all.

Nike5197d ago

Whoa, I swear I told my friend, who also finished the game a week ago, the same thing. Mass Effect 2 always throws you into the action but there was something about the pacing of ME1 that just created the perfect tension, like a slow burn before the shocks. Maybe it was reducing the RPG elements and story telling but Mass Effect 1's story established a universe, cultures, languages, etc. in one go whereas ME2's story just juggled them against the backdrop of the Collector threat.

zeeshan5197d ago

Mass Effect 2 lacks Emotional Effect but nonetheless it is a great game! I have so far invested 40 hours and loving it. Btw, can anyone tell me where to find someone who can use the forged Citadel ID?

Bungie5197d ago

nope Mass Effect 2 ownz in term of Emotional Payoffs IMO

Heavy Rain is still good

Well I haven't watched HR for myself, got the demo, so I think its likely to be more of an emotional story than ME2, I mean its not to hard to believe because that seems to be the focus of HR, an emotionally engaging story, while ME2 offers a very intense story told with great voice acting, refined controls to go along with action packed gameplay from begining to end, HR is not really my cup of tea but both are great games I just prefer ME2's style over HR anyday.

I didn't know ME2 was suppose to be emotional. The attempt to salvage Heavy Rain's rep through Mass Effect 2 is the biggest fail in years.

I'm not surprised seeing how this is a NIKE post from split-screen.com.

Played the Heavy Rain demo and hated it, I could care less if Heavy Rain is emotional I couldn't stand playing it? More than I had to in the demo.

Lightsaber5197d ago

this has to be some kind of joke. An "Emotional Payoffs" for hit X now hit square now ? Video games are all about being able to put yourself in to the role of who you are playing. Heavy Rain couldnt remove you more from that role if it tried.

green5197d ago

Because of the bond i had with my dog and wife in fable 2, it has led me to the conclusion that Fable 2 is a more emotionally engaging than Uncharted 2.See what i did there? That comprising is as full of fail as the comparising that this article is trying to make. Some people are really desperate.

Immortal3215197d ago

2games in 2worlds in 1article, yep this is top news.

Neo6045197d ago

I'm getting HR on Tues.
I'll try ME2 for PC to see what is all this hype about.

tinybigman5197d ago

last night and i gotta tell you not only was it really emotional, but it's one of the best games i've ever played. i'm playing Mass Effect 2 now and i dont feel that emotional pull that part one had. dont get me wrong though ME2 is an awesome game.

imo though the game feels more TPS and less RPG.

Saaking5197d ago (Edited 5197d ago )

Honestly, ME2 is an amazing game; however, it's more of a shooter than an RPG and shooter rarely have emotional impact. ME2 is not one of those special shooters.

Heavy Rain on the other hand is DESIGNED to be very emotionally impacting.

kingdavid5197d ago

You should really listen to the crap which spews out of your mouth saaking.

captain-obvious5197d ago

because
Heavy Rain was made from the ground up to be emotional
but Mass Effect 2 was made to be an action RPG

looking for hits much ?

Perjoss5197d ago

looking very much forward to HR, comes out here on Friday, I'm mostly looking forward to the adult theme it has, no not sexy stuff, it just seems like a game aimed at grown ups, you know, all the usual video game cliches are not present (giant breasted girls, massive explosions and terrible 'video game' dialog).

evrfighter5197d ago

lol emotional payoff?
That is all they could think of to try and compete with Mass Effect 2?

That's borderline sad and pathetic...yet funny at the same time.

Bigpappy5197d ago (Edited 5197d ago )

This article is trying to use ME2 to trick some of you into thinking that HR has something in common with mass effect, but does a better job at it. He could have used Halo, UC2, or any game out there. Why ME2? I refuse to give a hit to a story I know is not worth reading. This is a stupid comparison. Let HR sell on its own. It should not need the insinuation that it is better than the hottest game on the market to try and perk some interest for it. These games have nothing in common. This comparison is an insult to ME2. Not because HR is a bad game, but because ME2 is not a game about emotion. Emotion is a tiny part of ME2. HR is all about emotional attachment. Dumb article.

Shepherd 2145196d ago

The level of emotion in any game varies depending on the player. A person who has similarities to the Master Chief, Solid Snake, Commander Shepard, etc will be much more attached and find things more meaningful in the story if they see things that other dont. A person who lost their father may be intrigued by a character in the game who lost their father as well, or is a father themselves. That alone is an example of how a game can stir emotions inside a player.

To me Mass Effect 2 had a satisfying emotional payoff, especially with the returning characters from Mass Effect 1, and how they can possibly die if you make the wrong choices.

otherZinc5196d ago

Mass Effect 2 is going to destroy Heavy Rain in sales!

Hum, no thanks, Heavy Flop confirmed by Metacritic Awards.

Please dont buy a PS3 for this game.

TheXgamerLive5197d ago

where as Heavy Rain is a video, no game though. It plays like dragons lair, it's 4/5ths all video w/a tiny bit of your controlling a character, and when you do have that small bit of control it's for nothing, nothing at all, then a choice revolves around your head and you make another choice and the video kicks in again. Anyone can make a video look good, but their 1/5th game play is a joke. sorry, this is like that crap that was available for the sega saturn. sux

Sir_Ken_Kutaragi_5197d ago

...both games seem to make the ChavBots&ModBots CRY...

i.e They can't play 'Heavy Rain' + I can play 'Mass Effect 2' on my PC!!! ;-D

NeutralGamer5196d ago

Actually it doesent make me cry that I can't play Heavy Rain... Sorry but I dont care =/

It neither make me cry that you can play ME 2... I would feel sorry and cry on your behalf if you could'nt...

But then again I'm no "ChavBots&ModBots&quo t;.
I mean just because we are console owners we arent Fanboys... Right?

I actually found Mass Effect 2 quite emotional and i made a bond to many of the characters. But Heavy Rain seems to be a lot better on that aspect, and i really hope it is going to be as amazing as it seems.

Nike5197d ago

I'd really love to know the algorithm Bioware used to decide who lives and dies in ME2. Apparently, you can have one disloyal person live and three loyal ones die in one playthrough, and a completely different result the next playthrough, without any rhyme or reason. I completed all those loyalty missions and yet you kill off everyone but the prick who hates me? Thanks! >:-/

RagTagBnd4455197d ago

I found this link to be quite useful for the ending: http://social.bioware.com/f...

GiantEnemyCrab5197d ago

Absolutely there is some great emotional connection in Mass Effect. It might be missed by those who just jump into the sequel.

I would go into details of some of these emotional moments but I won't spoil everything for you.

During my mass effect play through I've gone from angry to feeling heroic to feeling sad at the loss of a crew member. I've felt cheated by betrayals and felt guilty for some of my decisions imposed on other races.

Anyway, this article leaves me with feeling Heavy Rain is the new unpopular kid at school so it's trying to latch on to the popular kids and earn a bit of reputation.. Heavy Rain doesn't deserve to be in the same sentence as Mass Effect yet in my opinion.

DaTruth5197d ago (Edited 5197d ago )

Oh yeah, all those 9's and 9.5's make it the unpopular kid in school! Sorry, but being highly regarded and new to the school makes you an up and comer ready to take the school by storm!

I won't be getting it, because it doesn't appeal to me, but your comment is just plain stupid! I'd probably rather play Mass Effect, but I haven't seen even a screenshot of the game due to games I'm not able to play, not interesting me and thus I don't show up in the comments section of said games to trash them like a loser fanboy!

evrfighter5197d ago

but GEC is right no matter how much you want to deny it.

Heavy Rain doesn't even belong in the same sentence as Mass Effect 2. I've never even considered purchasing HR for my ps3. I've wanted ME2 for my pc for a really long time now.

happy_gilmore5197d ago

did not even play the The Answer part. i wanted to leave that game as perfect as it was.

ME2 is a bland action game. only losers would find any emotional attachments to its generic characters

Tron_Rocks5197d ago

That's what your comment measures up to be. Millions of players and most of the reviews agree with me and not you. Maybe you would do better to play pong....

Bungie5197d ago

Heavy Rain ?

are you talking about that game that got AA reviews and called a movie ?

Tony-A5197d ago

No, Bungie. We're not gonna buy a PS3 for you. If you want to play the game, get the PS3 yourself.

Ah.. I remember those days. Back when you used to make fun of the things you liked. You're so young.

mrv3215197d ago

Only a double AA I can't enjoy that game now :( I really liked the demo to.

According to this site... Heavy Rain has an AVERAGE review score os 9.0 and Halo 3 a average of 8.9 so... Heavy Rain is better than Halo 3? But of wait only certain reviews from certain sites count.

Anyone who calls Heavy Rain a movie is stupid.

djtek1845197d ago

I kinda feel sorry 4 Bungie, he tries so hard but keeps getting owned. Poor little guy.

aaron58295197d ago

I'm tempted to put bungie on my ignore list... but his idiotic comments make me laugh all the time...

Ya know, idiots make people laugh...

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave40d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan40d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
