X10: Rare Knows It Screwed Up Perfect Dark Zero

Quietly sitting and admiring the latest HD build of Perfect Dark on Xbox LIVE Arcade, Ken Lobb -- the creative director for Microsoft Game Studios -- reveals how Rare made some critical errors when launching a "day one" game, and how it's avoiding the same mistakes with Perfect Dark on Xbox 360.

PDZ was a great game, I agree the character models were odd but the gameplay rocked.

gaffyh5203d ago

Do they know that they screwed up with Banjo 3 as well? They made it completely different to a Banjo game!

-MD-5203d ago

Nuts and Bolts also a great game, a traditional Banjo would have been preferred though.

The BS Police5202d ago

I can't say anything positive about PDZ.

What happened to the engine?

Where is the good story?

What happened to the original voice actors?

Wheres all the options?

Why is the art style crap?

Wheres all thew wacky death animations?

Wheres the blood?

Wheres the electronic music?

-MD-5202d ago

Electronic music? That was featured throughout the entire game.

What options were missing? Still to this day PDZ has the most features of any game I've played.

The BS Police5202d ago (Edited 5202d ago )

PDZ has very little in the ways of features, games like Halo 3 outshine it in every possible way. However the big kicker is that the original Perfect Dark even has more features than PDZ.

You are right that there were electronic, but it also was overblown with acoustic and electric guitar. The original perfect Dark soundtrack was a masterpiece in everyway.

It is for those reasons that PDZ was a failure.

Well that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, the game scored a solid 81% on metacritic and for being a rushed launch title that isn't anything to sneeze at.

I played them both (to death) and they're both in my top 5 FPS of all time. I don't think I'll ever have as much fun as I did with PDZ again.

perfect dark zero was a HUGE disappointment

the game was nothing compared to the original in almost everything

level design, control, sound, music, characters, plot shooting mechanics, art style, enemy AI, enemy death animations and the overall charm and feel of perfect dark

perfect dark zero looked, felt and play so cheesy, it's actually depressing

it's decent game on its own but it's a disaster to give it "perfect dark" name

it just an average crap stacked with a legendary name

it really was a big letdown

The hits just keep on coming. Will not be surprised if this gets canned. It already got rebooted and they had to bring on an outside studio to try and help developement. Some of the original creatives have left the project.

But I will say, just wait until the MS showcase. If you don't see it there, then alarm bells should start ringing.

Snookies126d ago

God, please don't screw this one up Microsoft! I am keeping my expectations super low, but Perfect Dark (the original) holds such a special place in my childhood. I want this to turn out well SO bad.

helicoptergirl6d ago

Are you expecting the game to be shown at the upcoming Xbox Showcase?

neutralgamer19926d ago

Just cancel it because we know you won’t be happy with its sales performance while giving it away on GP day one. GP is the biggest issue for developers and that affects the sales. No one can deny that now. GP equals to good deal for gamers and bad deals for AAA development. Take two CEO said it and he was 100% right. There are certain games that make sense on GP but not every game. 20 million gamers playing a game on GP doesn’t mean much to MS it seems because they still want sales. Just please start releasing all games on other platforms otherwise Phil is next now. You can’t spend 80 billion and be this bad

The studio was founded in 2018. It's still not adding up in my head how it can take 6 years to develop a game, with a whole dev studio working on it.

This is the only upcoming MS game I'm looking forward to. I hope it doesn't get canceled.

Perfect Dark would be cool but I’m hoping for Fable. I’m really interested where they’ve taken the game.

Tacoboto12d ago

Looking ahead now, I'd say Avowed is what I'm looking forward to most in the fall. Obsidian's been nothing but quality and consistency so I can't wait to see what they've been cooking
