Eurogamer - Face-Off: BioShock 2

Eurogamer writes: "Released a year after the Xbox 360 version, shorn of some of its visual magnificence, afflicted with an ugly blur and featuring exclusive DLC you actually had to pay for despite the long wait, it's fair to say that PlayStation 3 owners didn't fare too well at the hands of 2K Games when it came to the belated release of the original BioShock.

All the game content was there, and enough of the raw BioShock DNA was there to make it a worthwhile experience in its own right, but compared to the original Xbox 360 version of the game it was a disappointment. This time 2K has made efforts to get it right. There's no year-long delay between versions, and on first impressions it seems the development team has done well in replicating the look of the game across both platforms."

Wow.

Too early in the morning for all that.

They both look nice.

BubblesandFacts5193d ago

Frame-rate comparison from three sections of BioShock 2 gameplay shows that 360 is remarkable in maintaining 30FPS with minimal screen-tear, while the v-synced PS3 version can struggle.

fact: Eurogamer is clearly downplaying how bad the screen tearing is, people have been reporting that it's in fact very distracting and deters from the gameplay.

Anton Chigurh5193d ago (Edited 5193d ago )

From the Article

"PlayStation 3 on the other hand operates in a very different way, and again Resi 5 is the closest comparison: it is entirely v-synced, and triple-buffered to boot. The result is that in the default "locked frame-rate mode" you will never see it tear, ever. The downside is that frame-rate can and will dip frequently, especially in intense combat. Being triple-buffered, general controller latency is ever-so-slightly more muted than on Xbox 360, but response feels considerably worse when frames are being dropped. Again, this element of the performance profile feels very similar to Resident Evil 5."

"PlayStation 3 is very bizarre indeed"

NewZealander5193d ago

i got the 360 version, havnt noticed any screen tear, but i will say some of the textures are really bad, i mean ive seen a few that would look at home on the N64.

i dont know what to think of the game so far, rapture was a blast the first time, but it hasnt evolved, i think the graphics are actually a step back from the origional, i kind of regret getting bioshock 2.

mrmikew20185193d ago

All it is is favoritism, so that is never going to stop.

SL1M DADDY5193d ago

Do I want to play a game that maintains 30 FPS and tears like crazy or do I want the occasional dip in frames to 26 FPS but have no tearing ever. Wait, what system do I have friends on to play the MP? Oh, I'll go with that one.

heroprotagonist5193d ago

1.5% is hardly tearing like crazy. In fact, it is nearly imperceptible, except only rarely. When it gets up to around 20% or more, that's when it can be very problematic and annoying.

You guys are latching on to the one thing that is very slightly worse on the 360 (even though 1.5% is almost nothing) and trying to ignore the much bigger differences in other areas that make the 360 version the superior version to buy if you have the choice.

ProjectVulcan5193d ago (Edited 5193d ago )

Pc FTW as usual. The article mentioned how easily the game runs even on dated hardware. When a bunch of console owners are arguing over a couple percent screentear, or the difference between 26 and 30 frames a second, or the resolution of some textures that have to be magnified several times to even see the difference- Its time to break out the Pc version that will manage 60 frames a second with everything turned on, on a budget video card like a GT240 or 4670....

If you played the PS3 version, then turned on the 360 version on the same 1080 HDTV and asked a person to tell the difference between them 8 feet away and identify the correct version randomly from a few tests, they would be hard pressed. In fact i bet less than a quarter people here would even see anything when the game is in motion- Its much, MUCH harder to see. However unless you were stevie wonder, you would be able to pick out the PC version a mile away just because of the buttery framerate and resolution alone. Try and get some sort of relative comparison in your head!

In short why are console gamers even trying to wrangle some sort of silly 'victory' over a game so close on both platforms for crying out glaven..

commodore645193d ago (Edited 5193d ago )

Summary:

PS3 vs 360
"In terms of purchasing decisions for those who own both HD consoles, it's fairly self-evident that the Xbox 360 version of BioShock 2 is the one to have: graphics are undoubtedly superior with four times the resolution on transparencies, the frame-rate is undoubtedly smoother, there's no HDD-sapping mandatory installation and control varies from slightly crisper to considerably more responsive, depending on the status of the PS3's frame-rate at any given point."

360 vs PC:
"In terms of differences and improvements, there's not a huge amount to distinguish (PC) BioShock 2 from the Xbox 360 version. Running everything at maximum we see a game that has the occasional improvement in terms of texture quality, but on the whole the PC game is extremely similar. "

What else would you like to know?

StanLee5193d ago (Edited 5193d ago )

Digital Foundry has the most comprehensive and unbiased comparisons rather than comparing screens but fanboys will still take a piss out of them for no reason. Nice.

Cenobia5193d ago

These comparisons are retarded.

The game is available on the PC. If anyone actually cared about the graphics they wouldn't even be talking consoles. Most people just try to use these as a stupid way to somehow prove console superiority...

I wish I didn't have to see 10 of these articles for every slightly hyped multiplatform game.

Maximus Corruptor5193d ago

I agree, I would defintely deal with the ocassional drop in framrate instead of screen tear, but what does bother me though is the pale colors in the PS3 version from that video it's almost like having caterax when you look at the 360 to the ps3!

Thanks for the effort 2K , hope it sells well.

Perjoss5193d ago

so far I'm liking it, but not loving it like I did with the first Bioshock. Minor spoiler: the water sections are a nice change and much needed considering the setting. Always found it strange that the first game was based in an underwater city but it was so easy to forget where you actually were as there was minimal water interaction.

Anton Chigurh5193d ago

Once again the 360 version wins.

Nothing new.

saint_john_paul_ii5193d ago

there is no excuse anymore for shoddy games on the PS3. you do a bad job on making a PS3 game, you will get the horns of many PS3 fans.

why do i say this? well, just watch the GOW3 trailer and see why.

why is it that 1st party PS3 exclusive destroy everything that is currently available in the market?

I want to see a 3rd party game on the PS3 overtake a 1st party game in terms of grpahics and performance, but whats the point if all the 3rd party developers are being lazy with the system?

heroprotagonist5193d ago

Have you guys seen the Alan Wake video? Well, it's extremely impressive and looks as good as any game on any console platform.

I'm thinking about buying this. Next gen consoles will have the power of current top of the line PC's.

@BubblesandFacts all media have been sugar coating their findings lately, it's the only way they avoid smear campaigns from the Sony camp.

The 360 was designed for games.

Neonridr807d ago

I have such high hopes because the first game is so near and dear to me. That being said, I'm sure they will mess it up. I'm hoping it's adult rated, and violent. I want to see a Big Daddy put that drill to good use :P

camel_toad805d ago (Edited 805d ago )

They're great at butchering stuff but there have also been some gems and surprises.

I never in my life thought I'd like a series based on League of Legends but it was pretty great.

Maybe just maybe they'll do Bioshock justice.

Netflix did well with Dare Devil and the Punisher and I hear the Witcher is pretty good I know when I had Netflix at the time Stranger Things was also good. But Bioshock I love the franchise Bioshock Infinite is my favorite game I would pay the $21 Canadian just to check out Bioshock. Normally I would never renew my Netflix after they did their price hike but Bioshock would be worth it.

LoveSpuds806d ago

When firing on all cinders, Netflix do produce some brilliant stuff so I am not feeling pessimistic at all here. If Netflix deliver to their potential then this could be incredible given the quality of the source material. Personally, I am quite excited.

EvertonFC806d ago

Agreed, Netflix originals etc are fantastic in general, it's rare I don't like something they do.
Certainly not feeling negative with Netflix doing bioshock quite the opposite infact.

Ashunderfire86806d ago (Edited 806d ago )

Bu bu bu bu but what about Cowboy Beebop though? That was a little miss opportunity. Just a little nervous that Bioshock could turn to crap 💩 like that show. If they do a Horizon Zero Dawn show, I hope they don’t screw that up as well. I know a few good actresses that could play Aloy like Jon Snow’s girlfriend from Game of Thrones, and his wife in real life. Definitely see Aloy in her.

Livingthedream806d ago

Netflix does a lot of great things, recently finished the first season of Arcane and it was brilliant.

MadLad806d ago

Arkane was so damn good.
I just hope they keep up the quality with later releases.

I'm not even a LoL player.

Livingthedream805d ago

I’m sure they will, I don’t play the games either, I love the fact that I didn’t need to play them to enjoy it.

Michiel1989805d ago

Arcane was insanely good imo, I was hooked almost all the way. Im not sure of this but i think Netflix didnt have much to do with the production of the show? More like they just bought the rights to have it exclusively on there?

Some of their original shows are really good so im quite hopeful this might turn out to be a good show. Lets hope they wont F it up.

Nacho_Z806d ago

Love Bioshock but I'll prepare myself for the likelihood this will be both crap and a pale imitation of the source material. That covers most video game adaptations and Netflix films.

dumahim806d ago

How many have they done? It sounds like Witcher and Castlevania have done well.

Nacho_Z806d ago

I meant Netflix films in general, there are some good ones but most are average at best in my experience. Castlevania is good but I didn't like The Witcher, although it is successful.

Not sure if there are any live action video game film adaptations on Netflix as yet but they don't have a great track record.

dumahim806d ago

@ Nacho
For movies, I think it’s very difficult to cram he narrative from a 10+ hour game into 2 hours. I think that’s why series are much better suited for video game adaptations. Seems we have a bunch coming up, so we’ll see how well it plays out.

Terry_B806d ago

Why are PS2 and Wii and even the PS Vita tagged?

Atom666806d ago

The Vita tag stung a little bit extra.

Atticus_finch806d ago

Starring Tom Holland I'm guessing.

FlavorLav01806d ago

Haha. Now if it was a Sony movie, very likely

Infinite better than 2? No way

roadkillers978d ago

IMO Infinite is better than 2... The only thing I remember from 2 is playing as a little sister. It felt too much like Bioshock (which wasn't bad). Infinite was the right stepping stone.

Inverno978d ago

Infinite was a huge step back. It played like a generic fps because it was dumbed down to be an fps and it's not at all the gameplay evolution Bioshock needed. It was a mindless shooter where story and it's world building took a backseat to repetitive shooting galleries against dumb AI while making you look for health in trash cans cause they removed mechanics that worked in favor for a more action oriented gameplay.
I think people are remembering Infinite all wrong.
It's story is a mess and it's world isn't as fleshed out as Rapture was in the first Bio.

LucasRuinedChildhood978d ago (Edited 978d ago )

@Inverno

"It was a mindless shooter where story and it's world building took a backseat to repetitive shooting galleries"
Sounds more applicable to Bioshock 2, tbh. B2 has wave-based gameplay where Subject Delta casually goes through large hordes of splicers to protect Little Sisters. C'mon. I still wouldn't call any of the Bioshocks mindless shooters though.

If you want to criticize the lack of the weapon wheel and the replacement of certain mechanics in Infinite in favour of increased mobility (e.g. addition of the sky-hook), fair enough, but the story and world-building of 2 are less memorable, noteworthy and interesting than Infinite by a huge margin. Most people don't even remember much beyond the basic premise of 2 (including any of the characters) because it felt so unnecessary. It's not even close.

"It's story is a mess and it's world isn't as fleshed out as Rapture was in the first Bio." Needing to use Bioshock 1 to criticize Infinite instead of 2 is an admission that 2's story is the weakest.

roadkillers978d ago

@Inverno

I remember it being very imaginative and a breath of fresh air, while still being familiar. The last hour or two was big on shooting.

SegaSaturn669978d ago

Infinite was the most boring and repetitive in terms of gameplay. It lost the suspenseful atmosphere of the first 2

SonyPS360978d ago (Edited 978d ago )

Am I reading that backwards or are you really shocked that people like infinite more than 2?

Just wanna make sure I have it right because you're literally the first person I've seen say that 2 is better.

Inverno978d ago

I understand 2 is more of the same but I much prefer more of the same than going backwards in terms of gameplay. It wasn't the step in the right direction. But thats just my opinion, I'm not surprised at all. Just to me I much rather the first 2. However what they had planned for Infinite originally sounded very interesting and it sucks we won't ever see it

Concertoine978d ago (Edited 978d ago )

Imo 2 is tied with 1 as my favorite Bioshock. The gameplay is the natural evolution of the first, with more freedom to experiment. The story and locales are more intimate and less grandiose than you would see in a Ken Levine story. I love the atmospheric break of the underwater sections and never understood the hate for them. All 3 games have pacing issues but imo 2’s are less severe. The level design has a lot of ex-Looking Glass alumnis and is generally more open ended.

The endings are more tailored to your moral choices than the other games.

Infinite hedges on a admittedly cool twist that is poorly executed when scrutinized. The gameplay takes a huge step back, it isnt the game that early gameplay and trailers promised. The world is less fleshed out. It was prescient politically and that makes it interesting but otherwise i have no desire to replay it.

Yui_Suzumiya977d ago

2 had better gameplay but 3 had a better story

leahcim978d ago (Edited 978d ago )

Hurts to see the word "worst" related to Bioshock saga.
The 3 games are masterpieces.

ScootaKuH978d ago

Bioshock 2
Bioshock
Bioshock Infinite

BioShock 2's director reveals what could have been a different BioShock

In a podcast with Wassup Conversations, Jordan Thomas, director and the writer of BioShock 2 reveals his initial ideas for a new rapture and how they were shut down by 2K.
"My first proposal was about a little sister, it was playing as a little sister and it was much more horror-oriented pace and about vulnerability, closer to Thief frankly, but I was told no, we want it to be our Gears of War, this need to be a big shooter franchise with an emphasis on the shooter element, and so what I think of the protagonist of a shooter as is a big lumbering sort of porthole on a stick with guns sticking out in front like you’re almost a vehicle."

It's surprising the game turned out to be good with this guy at the helm. The combat mechanics were actually the biggest improvement in the sequel as much as he wouldn't want to hear that, everything else was inferior.
