Kotaku: Star Wars: Battlefront III may have been binned, but we've heard from sources that the series lives on, in the form of currently-in-pre-production Battlefront Online.
The game, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, is currently being worked on by both Lucasarts and Slant Six Games, the studio responsible for SOCOM Confrontation and SOCOM Fire Team Bravo 3.
Some games are decent enough that they receive a yearly sequel; Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series, and Activision’s Call of Duty franchise to name a couple. Other games are just as good yet for whatever reason, due to underwhelming sales or internal development issues, fans might have to wait years, if ever to get a follow-up to a beloved game.
Despite being the best-selling Star Wars game of all time, Star Wars: Battlefront has yet to have a next-generation sequel. Isn't it worthy?
I have never understood the hype battlefront gets. I loved the original, but it gets boring easy. To boot, it didn't even really have a story.
Suppose I am in the minority when I say it is average. Nonetheless, I hope they do make a 'sequel' so people will finally stfu lol.
To me what stood out in comparison to other games was that it felt like a real war.
Especially Battlefront 2.
The maps are huge and there are many AIs or players (online) fighting at the same time. Plus the usage of many vehicles and ships add to the experience.
From what I've read a long time ago BF3 was suppose to have ground, air, and space battles at the same time. In BF2, Ground and air fights occurred at the same time depending on the map. Space battles were battle that needed to be fought separably, but they planned to combined them all. This would have increased that epic feeling of fighting in a war within the Star Wars realm.
Yeah that sounds like the only real way it could have improved to be honest.
No idea why they never made a third one, but I have accepted that its probably a pipe dream.
Never played BF2. Never knew you could play it online. If that is true, I fully understand the hype, and am now extremely depressed I never got to experience it.
I live in Australia, and ADSL broadband was only available in my Area in 2006 or 2007. It was the 256kb download as well. Basically I only experienced Warcraft 3 online during the ps2 era.
Yeah, the singleplayer was really only fun to play if you had a friend over. But the multiplayer was awesome...
I really liked the first game, playing as a random Rebel soldier or a Storm Trooper was really neat, far removed from the usual type of game that gets released in the Star Wars universe.
Battlefront 2 just kinda killed it for me, and it was purely just seeing Darth Vader and other characters wandering around. I just couldn't get over that stuff. But to say that Battlefront doesn't deserve a game on the 360/PS3 or next gen consoles is silly.
I wouldn't mind a sequel and I'm sure it'll get one eventually, if not a new reboot.
But I'd personally like to have a Knight of the old republic 3. I mean..
GOD DAMNIT MAKE THE F@CKING GAME!
Agreed. I want KOTOR 3 more then anything. I was crushed when they announced the mmo, because I figured it would last for years like WoW and we'd never see a proper sequel.
BF3 is also high up on my want list.
Please make a new Tie Fighter game with 256 player space battles.
No more new Star Wars crap please.
WHY ARE YOU EVEN ASKING THIS???!!! Of course Star Wars battlefront is worthy of a sequel! I'm having flashbacks to staying up tell 3am, trying to finally win as the Rebels on Hoth.
When I wrote the article it was call "Worthy of a Sequel", but the editors wanted it changed to its current title "Is it Worthy of a Sequel".
Basically, it is a rhetorical question I guess they had in mind.
yes please do something about this disney since lucasarts former management was to idiotic to listen to the fans.
Just revive, finish and release Battlefront 3. Done.
I'm actually kinda worried now that Disney has their hands on these IPs. They don't exactly have a great track record for delivering high quality games that you would expect from a Disney standard, rather they just slap a game together in time for a movie/show release. Kingdom Hearts and games from the 8 and 16 bit era being an exception.
It's not so much the partnership games that will be questionable, but definitely the all in-house Disney interactive games.
Siliconera: "The rumors are true, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City developer Slant Six was working on a Star Wars game back in 2010. Lucasarts hired Slant Six to make Star Wars Battlefront Online for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."
Haha, I was just going to say the same thing
I'd rather have no Battlefront sequel then a crappy one by the worse developer out there
Besides it's not really Battlefront 3 is it
Battlefront's good name went untarnished. That is a win.
Now if we could just keep the Banjo Kazooie, Crash, and Spyro IPs away from their perspective owners....
Slant Six must have a checklist of popular game franchises that they're out to ruin....
Socom............Check!
Resident Evil....Check!
Star Wars........
The concept art showed Jedi in the game. I really wish these developers would stop focusing on Jedi. Battlefront isn't supposed to be about Jedi it's supposed to be about the soldiers and their battles.
Also Socom Confrontation wasn't a terrible terrible game. Once they patched it it became a fun game. But before that it was bug ridden.
Well Jedi can be in the game. As long as balance exists. Not godlike superheros, but soldiers that are not immune to death. They should be able to die.
This works out very well in one Jedi Knight Jedi Academy mod with Jedi being balanced out to same level as soldiers. Personally I believe its gone a bit to far in the latest builds, but that's just me.
Check out Moviebattles 2 mod for JKA on Youtube or something like that. I actually get the feeling to play as another class other than Jedi in this mod without instant death fears.
Jedi in SWBF2 were awesome. So were regular soldier battles. Don't see whats wrong with having both
It's funny, I literally have SWBF1 in my PS2 running right now. I just got done serving the empire on Rhen Var: Citadel... The map were sweet on SWBF1, still pretty good on 2... They still need to make SWBF3 please.
If I remember correctly I seen video of gameplay on Endor maybe 1 1/2 yrs. ago, I think it was Pandemic's near completed version? (might've been slant six's but that don't seem right, oh well) It looked sweet, you could hop in a X-wing & shoot some Tie Fighters down then dock up in space!!! Looks aren't everything so maybe it didn't make for a focused game. You're right also Slant-six has mucked up quite a few good franchises LoL...
This made me so excited, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was one of my favorite shooters (alongside Nightfire) last gen.
Then I read the article.
In a sense I'm kind of glad it isn't being made. Perhaps we should leave the series where it was. It had it's amazing time but now if they bring it back there's a huge chance it will either be received poorly or be too "CODified" for all of these 12 year old "gamers".
Forever in our hearts; SWBF2 <3
They were my two favourite shooters last gen too, Nightfire was amazing fun with local multiplayer. I am kinda happy they are leaving battlefront at the moment but I would love to see a finished version of pandemics battlefront 3 , that looked amazing !
I concur. And they would have a better handle on current gen tech, too. Which means truly big land to space battles. Man, that sounds so cool.
Nowadays I keep getting let down when developers bring back older shooters. Everytime they announce it I get all excited, only to find out that they canned all of the core elements of the game, in exchange for call of duty type gameplay to appeal to a crowd that might by the game, but will be gone once the next CoD comes out.
It's happening to all of my favorite shooters and I hate it.
One game I've wanted to see come back is Timesplitters. However, I'm scare for it because it's such a classic, that if it isn't done right a lot of people are going to be pissed. Maybe next gen will be different....but I hope that CoD gets knocked off sooner or later because it's influence on the industry disgusts me.
How did Slant 6 ruin SOCOM? I don't play too much SOCOM. Resident Evil, it wasn't their fault. RE was already crappy when ORC came out. Battlefront Online, I'm gonna be weary about this unless it is done right.
Oh boy...Operation Racoon City gets a sequel AND they now are making a Star Wars game.
Somewhere Uwe Bowl is smiling.
A job listing hints that Slant Six are starting work on the speculated Star Wars: Battlefront Online, again.
I've actually never played Battlefront before. Is it good? I might have to try it out.
YES IT IS! Think of it as a 3rd person Battlefield or Warhawk set in the Star Wars universe. When a player is doing amazing in the game, they will get the chance to become a Jedi or Sith depending on what team you are on. When you become one, you can rape the puny armies. With force push, lightsaber throws, force lightning, force choke, and force run and jump! You can have Jedi vs Sith battles, space battles, vehicle battles, or normal army battles.
battle front 2 was amazing, just like the movie attack of the clones with the huge battle scale. loved it. great with split screen, online, or just singleplayer. that game had it all.
I hope this is true, Damn, the last real battlefront came out over 4 and a half years ago.. all we've been getting is crappy handheld ones, I don't even have a PSP so I couldn't even play them
Battlefront keeps popping up at the mo. Played the original ages ago, and really liked it. Would love to see a new one happen.
I don't see any sarcasm in his comment. Battlefront was amazing last gen. Too many franchises have been ruined this gen.
What Colbert said is 100% fact.....ask any SOCOM fan and they will confirm it....go to SOCOM.com and make a thread "Does Slant Six suck?" and you will see just how bad their developing actually is
Confrontation is still in beta stage...and thats no lie, we PAID to be beta testers as they fixed the game for over a year and never completing it before turning their back on it
pray this horrible developer gets canned from your game or project.....get a real developer or atleast hope for one
Well, as much as it's likely cancelled completely, a part of me wishes, the Battlefront games are superb.
Oh god no, Slant Six ruined SOCOM, now there going (maybe) to ruin Battlefront to? Any publisher with a brain in there head would not let Slant Six go anywhere near a console game, and just let them stick to there PSP crap.
SOCOM Confrontation failed to capture what was great about socom + it was buggy as hell when released.
Gears of War 2 screwed up what made Gears 1 great and was buggy when released. Game got a free pass, why?
This are bad developers and I still play the game ever since the beta
but the game most of he times give em blue balls and headdecks
that how buggy and full of errors this game it's and
the worse thing is that fanboys think that you or me are trolling
idiotas fanboys
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Check all the videos from Blackwido88, you will see factual evidence why Socom Confrontation is bad.
It is weird that with the latest updates still with technical problems.
Good thing Zipper return with Socom 4. That's a good Socom.
Have you play Confrontation? If so, there should be no explaining why, its pretty obvious.
No, I want you to explain what is wrong. Because if you say the game was released in a buggy state then it just proves that you know nothing about development. Slant Six had no say so when the game was released, the final or added feature sets, or if patches are engineered. They can propose but the final decision is not theirs.
They also can't go out and do an interview stating how none of those items were their decision. Well they can but if they do they will never work in the business again.
/6 after they Socom F up (and Socom is my fav. online game, which I do still play).... this is the last company I would want to work for...
their rep is totally tarnished after they ignored the Socom community all through the beta phase and released a broken game and subsequent patches, were not QA properly and just broke more stuff... Socom is now in decent shape how many years after its release...
and again, Socy is my fav. online shooter of all time
the DA is clueless or never played Socom...if they think what I posted above is not true...just another blind DA failure.. comment, which you will be respected for or you are a loser
Confrontation was in a buggy state over a year after its release....and still is. Release dates are one thing, but having almost 2 years to fix a game and it still doesn't work properly is just a complete epic fail for the company. Also they completely changed the game and turned it into crap, they slowed down the game dramatically and added sprint, took out user created ranked rooms which led to constant voting to get clan members in a ranked medley, no jump and climb, OTS view, game modes based on kills rather than the actual objective. There's many more to list but thats just a few.
Like I said, you do not understand the procedure, who orders what and when and who controls matters. You also do not get who controls the purse strings every step of the way. Further explanation is useless.
And you apparently do not comprehend how to add a reply on this forum to a current post.
On the other hand let's not forget that some games like Gears 2 had completely broken multiplayer yet received a review pass. That game took months to patch and is in a fairly dead state right now whereas SOCOM started to receive patches rapidly, is an extremely tight game now and has a robust online community. Thankfully certain persons have bowed out and I am sure SOCOM players are grateful.
but does this Morganfell fellow always act like a self righteous know it all prick? Back off dude.
PBR
Morgan how do you know who was in control?
It might have been the publisher who states the time frame of release ect, but Slant6 should have fixed most of these glitches since Beta. The game at launch was a Glitch fest, but right now allot of the glitches have been patched.
Pretty much what everyone is complaining about is that they don't want Slant6 to do it, because Socom was Glitchy on release and thats something people don't want to see happen with Battle front.
but yes Slant6 has worked hard on Socom fixing it with later updates
So you get pawned by Morganfell and you resort to personal attacks?
1. You do not know how the reply button works
2. The game works pretty fine, and did so within a few months of release
3. At least Slant six did their best to support the game, unlike Epic with Gears. That game is as broken as SOCOM:C, and unlike S6 Epic did nil to fix the game
So how many of you who are against S6 feel Epic would ruin Gears 3 and that game would suck based on their track record? Give them a chance, they should deliver this time, Socom:C was their first major project as far as I know
thief
i agree, i say give them a chance
but like i said i just hope they don't mess it up at launch
right now Confrontation is fixed (most of the complaint and big glitches are anyway)
either way i want to see this game
Nitro...Sony was in control. The mistakes that were made were made by Sony under advisement from Zipper. Seth Luisi was elevated from Zipper to Sony proper. Zipper actually had oversight on the project. The publisher and IP holder (Sony with Zipper counseling) made the decisions. That's how it works in the gaming industry most of the time and that is how the situation unfolded in this case.
I'm sure you understand how the game was developed and what happened at what time right? Give me a break, you act like Slant Six is the innocent little puppy and its all Sony's fault. Please, this was Slant Six first game for PS3 and the failed miserably , there is no denying it. The sales where horrible, the review was horrible and the fans where beyond pissed. It was an online only game, there is no excuse that almost 2 years later that this game isn't fixed and working properly besides the fact they suck at making PS3 games, and need to stick to PSP.
Also this isn't a forum, this is a news article and we are simply "commenting" on it. Also I don't need to add a reply because its obvious I'm talking to you, and you clearly understand that seeing how you replied to me.
Edit: lol your right, SOCOM did get patches left and right didn't it? WRONG, it took them months to get patches out, and I mean MONTHS, and when they finally did they fixed something but in the process broke something else. Also Gears 2 is also very playable now, where Confrontation isn't. Epic said they screwed up and they know it, Slant Six on the other hand just makes excuses and cant come out and admit they screwed up.
@Jager - The game does not work properly, the menus are broken with lag and so is the game. Not to mention there's never been one time where I put Confrontation in my PS3 and havn't seen an error message. You still can't even lean and throw a grenade with your left hand, instead the character throws it with his right hand if your leaning out of a wall, that grenade is going to hit the wall in front of you and fall straight to the ground. The run button still sticks for christ sake, also it took the game 2 YEARS to sell 1 million copies, that is pathetic. SOCOM 2 has sold 2.6 million and that was 7 years ago, and SOCOM 1 sold 3.5 mil and that was 8 years ago.
Also there not releasing Gears 3 to soon, Gears 2 launched in 2008. If it does make the 2011 date (which I'm sure it will get delayed) thats almost 3 years apart. Its not like the game is coming out in 2 weeks.
The F?
I don't know what you're smoking but Socom Confrontation is perfectly fine, it's been that way since march 2009. I've had the game since its beta days playing it continuously on and off. It was bad the first 2 months, got better around Jan, then became excellent in March. Also, Socom Confrontation has reached 1 million sales, Great for a
socom game.
Also, as Morgan said, Gears 2 launched with horrendous online problems, and didn't get patched until 2-3 months after release. Maybe we should be pissed that Epic is going to release Gears 3 so soon, when i is obvious from Gears 2 that they need more than a 2 year dev cycle.
Dead on Jager. SOCOM stumbled out of the gate...hard... because it was released before it was ready. The beta was a true beta but SS was not given enough time nor the ability to implement a second beta.
Since then they have worked relentlessly on that game with little resources and it is so tight it easily surpasses any SOCOM title to date. I was a SOCOM fan from the beginning and spent hordes of time in SOCOM II despite it's unbelievable lag. Yet Confrontation has taken all of the best parts of past titles, ironed out the issues over time, and now the game is at the top of it's...er, dare I say...game.
And as I said there isn't any problem finding plenty of varied matches.
yeah socom is and has been working great for a while now. let the haters hate. true socom fans are playing this game right now and are enjoying it. i play it when ever i get the chance (only game i still play online) and have FTB3 for psp which is like confrontations with ps2 graphics.
the only problem is it was online only so if they did mess up in the beginning (which they did) you cant do anything but get mad and complain (which everone did) because there was nothing else to fall back on (no single player) so thats where all the hate for this game came from, you bought it and couldnt play it because the main part and whole purpose of the game didnt work.
God damn it, i'm sick of online shooters, give me some deathmatch, a bunch of game modes, bots, and LAN, how a shooter should be. I love playing Battlefront with the assult mode or whatever it's called, 250 players per side, all going nuts.
UT3 is great for crazy matches like that to, 32 player bot matches on the insane setting are hectic.
No doubt they'll be charging a subscription fee if this goes ahead....lucasarts are about as low as they come right now, who cares about the fans when they can increase there profit margins whilst spitting in the faces of the people who have bought so many star wars games;
here are the star wars games that I have bought:
Darkforces (PC), X-wing (PC), Tie Fighter (PC), Star Wars Battlefront ( PC and XBOX version ), Starwars Battlefront 2 ( PC and XBOX version ), Starwars: Empire at War (PC), Star Wars: Forces of Corruption (PC), Kotor 1 ( PC and XBOX version) Kotor 2 (PC and XBOX versions), Star Wars lego ( PS2 )Star Wars: Republic Commando ( XBOX ), SUPER Star Wars ( SNES ), SUPER Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, SUPER Star Wars Return of the Jedi (SNES), Shadows of the Empire ( N64), Star Wars Rogue Squadron (N64),Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2(N64), Star Wats Rogue Squadron 3 ( Gamecube ), Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds ( PC ), Star Wars: Episode 1; Pod Racer ( N64 )
So yeah, loyal fans like that don't count for much, thanks for the pathetic PC port of Forces unleashed 18 months late....I made sure that for the first time in ages I didn't buy a star wars game....my friendship with lucasarts has come to an end
yeah it's pretty crazy, i didn't realise i'd bought so many until I started thinking about all the games....that is over a long period though, i'm 24 now, my first star wars game was like...15 years ago
Morganfell, is a well respected individual, due to the vast amount of knowledge he possesses. He is a man of THE GAMING INDUSTRY, and I agree with him, because all that Chap was saying is "socom is buggy" without ever answering his question.
For the record, CONFRONTATION has made leaps and bounds from the start of its voyage, there is not denying that.
They had a small budget, what did you expect them to do?
As long as someone is making it, I'm a happy camper.
For now, anyone who misses battlefront should try Warhawk imo. The gameplay is basically the same but with better air combat and a GI Joe type theme.
I've never played the Battlefront series, but when StarHawk comes out, meh to it. Warhawk is so damn good and overlooked greatly, StarHawk will be THE PSN MULTIPLAYER EXPERIENCE this gen imo. The only question is when can we get a damn release date.
Agreed, dont expect starhawk to be as overlooked though. The userbase is so much bigger now that the community can only grow from what it already is. It has the potential to be an amazing game as well as a popular game.
I would love a new battlefront game i spent hours on ps2 and PC version, even joind a clan for #2,i was really mad with what happend to freerads swbf3, but there only one game thats as good if not better and thats warhawk that game is still going strong and nothing can piss you off more then warhawk, still love that game i even had the original ps1 version but i cant wait to see how spacehawk vs sw battlefront will turn out, i think starhawk will be better, but i cant wait for swbfOnline,Stormtroopers are bad ass , join the empire our ships are giant triangles, telling people to move along "move along move along!" hah family guy starwars <3
Slant six problem with socom was the online servers and that was it socom graphics etc was fine plz stop with the stupid they ruined socom the ruined the socom online experience battlefront will both be single and multiplayer as the rest so im sure they will do a much better job yes socom was horrible but the environments etc was nicely done.
Free Radical had it first and it got passed around after that, I don't know if they're sharing the code or not, but I can't see them reinventing the wheel since they don't own the license anyways (that would be Lucas Arts). The big thing now, I would think, is how complete it is and how many tweaks were made to the original engine.
http://video.google.com/vid...
Slant 6 is pretty terrible. Although Socom confrontation was highly underrated. Its pretty good as of right now. Thank god zipper is back on with socom 4.
I honestly thought Socom C wasn't bad the downside was poor player models and few maps.
Love the Battlefront series.
I find this very hard to believe.
Socom devs? Oh god no!
This means that the PS3 won't get a sloppy port if Slant Six Games is working on it.
If its going to be on Xbox 360 then obviously not Zipper since Sony owns Zipper... >.>
Oh and if I were you, I wouldn't be looking forward to Battlefront judging on how buggy SOCOM: Confrontation was/is. Don't get me wrong, I loved Confrontation but I gotta admit, that game is glitchy like a motherf*cker and had one of the worst launch in history.
And because of my avatar, you may be thinking I'm trying to stealth troll. Well think again, http://n4g.com/NewsCom-3756...
