Why Heavy Rain is a 9/10 game

GamesRadar: This month Official PlayStation magazine has the exclusive review of Sony's first exclusive of 2010: Heavy Rain. Subscribers copies are now in the wild so we can reveal the magazine has scored the game a stellar 9/10 and given it a coveted gold award.

With this in mind, we wandered over to OPM UK's office for a quick chat with the author of the review, Tim Clark (Editor-in-chief) to find out what led to his verdict on the game, in advance of our own review next month.

Because it's not good enough to be against any xbox 360 game coming out this year.

nogolis5224d ago

What does that even mean? I bet 9 out of 10 is what Splinter Cell Conviction brings in. Keep in mind I'm looking forward to Heavy Rain about as much as my next rectal examin. Idiot comments are just that.

3sq5224d ago

360 has games? Oh I see.

DigitalAnalog5224d ago

By your logic, 360 games have been scoring 10/10's across the board.

Are you SURE you're not confusing that with Uncharted 2?

-End statement

Roper3165224d ago

Hows that exclusive Darkest of Days or Inferno Hells Vengeance? You know those exclusives that scored 2's or 3's like most 360 exclusives.

redsquad5224d ago

I wish I could accurately convey being "speechless" in a text post, because that boggling, brainwashed zombie post has left me exactly that.

ThatCanadianGuy5224d ago

I believe xbox 360 emits some sort of radiation that damages brain cells.

If true, it would explain quite a bit.

divideby05224d ago

lol at GR.... please get some air or do a lap or something.

EvilBlackCat5223d ago (Edited 5223d ago )

Some people around here and in the mayor ps3 site HYPE the game making him look and sound like a 10/10 and in the end the game end up been a 9/10.

Anyway this game looks interesting and im going to pick it up with Alan Wake.

9 is fncking great so just be happy with it and stop hyping.

So I rip-open the damn cover and read it with pleasure. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

NateNater5224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

Well after you "rip-open the damn cover and read it with pleasure" maybe you could scan it into your computer for others who don't have access to it to enjoy as well?

HAHAHAHAHA!

-End statement :)

DigitalAnalog5224d ago

I'd take a snapshot with my Blackberry but the quality is too bad.

"Why Heavy Rain is a 9/10 game"

Because it's that good.

deadreckoning6665224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

Uve played the game already? Wow, lucky you! How long is the story? Do you get to play as the killer?

Edit: Why am I being called an xbox fanboy? I didn't even say anything even vaguely related to the 360. In fact, I don't even own a 360 yet..so please tell me what I said that made people believe this.

5224d ago
gaffyh5224d ago

And that is why Sony will always have the best exclusives in my eyes.

Hellsvacancy5224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

Not long 2 go now, the days seem 2 b gettin much longer as Heavy Rain approaches, probaly just me

captain-obvious5224d ago

"Sony's first exclusive of 2010: Heavy Rain"

MAG doesn't count?

Edit: Oh yeah, and White Knight Chronicles International comes out before Heavy Rain, too.

NeoBasch5224d ago

I think I might buy myself a copy of this magazine. I'm so desperate for anything Heavy Rain at this point. I don't want to say I'm jealous per say... okay, maybe I am a little. Probably for the first time in a long time. I just can't wait that long. I need my Heavy Rain! lol

sikbeta5224d ago

This game is made to Brake the Barriers between the Average Persons and Gaming

Innovation and Amazing mature Story...

jmare5224d ago

It has to be a conspiracy, right? It could be that: they like the game and realize that not many people really understand what the game is about or how it plays. Or maybe they are short on bullshit to put up on their site so they came up with this story because the guy he talked to works across the hall and it's an easy story. Nope, it's got to be a conspiracy.

meepmoopmeep5224d ago

maybe some people like to see progression or something new in gaming instead of FPS after FPS after FPS

Minimox165224d ago

i was about to write the same...

Tony P5224d ago

I'll say the same thing I said for Mass Effect 2: I don't care what it scores, I already made the decision a long time ago.

beardpapa5224d ago

Heavy Rain deserves a 9/10 because it has mystical powers. Sony didn't even have to do any marketing. With just a mere thought and a whimsical flick of his finger, David Cage has made it pour heavily in California. It's been literally raining hard for the past two days and we're expecting it to last the entire week. It's an omen and if people don't rush out to purchase this 9/10 title, David Cage will make sure it'll pour heavier and flood into our homes.

mfwahwah5224d ago

@1.11

Because I don't have the magazine that the review is from and want to know a bit more about what made it deserve its score.

Not everything in the industry is fanboy fueled. Seriously, re-****ing-lax.

IaMs125224d ago

@Captain Obvious
Please tell that to the PS3 fanboys constantly in the Xbox360 threads too.

On Topic:
Great score, whoever says 9 is not a good score is a piss ant. Even 8's and 7's can slide through sometimes, but as long as YOU enjoy the game who the hell cares what the media says then. I am interested in this game to see how it plays out, i dont know much about it, the samething with Alan Wake, im still clueless.

Looks to be a great year REGARDLESS the console of choice, and if you have both, best of both worlds :) Cheers!

SniperJDC5224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

Fanboys are the ones who get so defensive if someone doesn't say something good about their favorite console (like all the people who freaked out @deadreckoning666). Grow up man you guys would probably defend your console over your own children lol

badz1495224d ago

maybe because it's just odd and strange for anybody asking why a game got a certain score! 9/10 from OPM is a review, I think the answers to the "why?" question are pretty much explained in the review! asking "why?" after a review is like questioning the review itself or simply they are feeling disagree with the review. in this case, which 1 is it? hmm...

@mfwahwah

It feels kinda odd to me too you know because there are a lot more early reviews for other games out there yet only Heavy Rain got the question. I'll waive it as a non-fanboy attempt if only they come out and with another article: "why Mass Effect 2 is a 9/10 game?"

Raoh5224d ago

good interview.. cant wait to play this game.. i like the discussion about riskier games and sales

RadientFlux5224d ago (Edited 5224d ago )

Interesting article, though I don't see why there needs to be justification article on why they scored Heavy Rain 9/10. I guess it must be a slow news day.

Though the article did have some good information on the re-playability of the game.

BeaArthur5224d ago

Probably because it's currently the only review available so he is the only person we know of that has played the game start to finish. And like you said you did get some more insight into replay value so clearly the interview was relevant.

Christopher5224d ago

It really wasn't about why it got a 9/10 but more a bit more information on what the reviewer thought of the game. The fact he scored it a 9/10 just helped to direct the questions towards why he liked the game so much.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1271d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1271d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1270d ago (Edited 1270d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1428d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121428d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1428d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121428d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121428d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
