RPG Deals 1/17 – 1/23: Retro RPGs + Mass Effect 2, Jeanne d'Arc, Persona

Not a whole lot in the way of NEW RPGs on discount this week, but ever investigative, Russ digs around and finds gems of the RPG past priced lower than usual.

The part where he mentions DLC like the Dead Space suits from EA was spot on. It should be stopped. If you want to make a game easier lower the difficulty setting don't charge the consumer £5 the same day they spent £50 on your game. The same goes for Tiger Woods. I used to be able to get the full game for my PS2 straight from the shop but now its almost like episodic content but I'm still paying full price on release. Now you start with a few courses and have to buy the rest separately.

I know this was completely off topic but it winds me up with this kind of DLC.

I don't see it as off-topic at all; well said.
Regarding RPGs, I fear the same and hope it doesn't happen. I can easily picture games being released as skimpy, hollow products and only being really fleshed out via DLC. It'd be an easy way for companies to produce the same amount of content as a usual game (as defined by the last 10-15 years or so), but ultimately get twice the price for it.

I mean, there are already reports out of Japan that Final Fantasy XIII had hours worth of content removed. With how easy DLC is to obtain and how many games are using it, it's not out of the question for this to become a regular thing. I'd hate that.

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
