Is a Firmware Update Killing PS3 Blu-Ray Drives?

This lengthy thread at the Playstation forums suggests that some combination of the 3.10 firmware and Modern Warfare 2 is killing PS3 Blu-ray drives. Maybe it's true, or maybe they're all just drinking the kool-aid.

Forum members have reportedly pinpointed several reproducible freezes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which they claim began only after installing the 3.10 firmware (the most recent release is 3.15). After experiencing this freezing, many members reported problems in other games, leading them to conclude that the firmware update adversely affected their Blu-ray drives.

edwineverready5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

A lot of people play mw2 so the change is big that mw2 will be in the ps3 when it dies! It's not because of the firmware!

WildArmed5219d ago

lol IT IS!
Coz the firmware had a DOOMSDAY code in it so it'd fuk up your console..
it's all an evil scheme by sony! OMGZ >.>

Baba19065219d ago

mine broke becouse of ff8 though. =D but well im much happier with my slim now.

thor5219d ago

Ouch! Mine didn't break with FF8, but I found out that my PS3 isn't compatible with the 4th disk only when I got to the 4th disk... thankfully I have a memory card adaptor and my old PS2 :)

silverbeld5219d ago

Yeah whatever. ^^^

Mines broke after the firmware that is for sure. After the firmware i still can play dvd movies and all other things except the play blu-ray movies or blu-ray games. :(

But Sony repaired mine PS3 for free and i had it back in four days. :)

Swiftfox5219d ago

This complaint in the confined group of the Ps3 comuminty has been around since the firmware that launched with the Slim Line Ps3's. It seems to primarily hit older model Ps3's 20's 40's 60's and sometimes 80's.

When my Ps3 Blu-Ray drive failed I had just started playing Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, so I think it just comes down to the game you are playing when your Blu-Ray Drive decides to go.

I fixes it myself through replacing the Blu-Ray drive since my Ps3 was outside the warranty and I was not about to give up my 60gig model.

Most professional out of the wall repair shops have heard about the possibility of the Firmware causing the Blu-Ray lasers in the older models to be pushed harder than they are indented to be which leads to premature failure of the product. There was even a lawsuit filed against Sony for this very issue. Though, most repair professionals I have chatted with feel that the initial models of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive were of bad design compared to the newer models and are simply more prone to premature failure.

If there is an issue with your Ps3 please make sure you actually call Sony support to confirm the issues with your PS3. If not Sony than contact a reputible PS3 repair service. The PS3 is a complex piece of technology and many things could be the issue from dust on the lens to a faulty firmware install. Trying to fix/figure out the issues without professional advice could lead to you damaging the unit beyond the actual problem.

Wrathman5219d ago

never had my ps3 break, yet.dont play many games on it tho.

i have a friend who is on his third.blu-ray drive failure was coverd by continuous play insurance.which extended his warranty for 90 days.then it broke again.few weeks later BANG! dead again.same issue.no insurance now.£125 to get a refurb.which you have to give your old ps3 to get.then the refurb dies.which is replaced and seemingly working ok now.

after he gave the ps3 customer service guy an ear full about reliability,he gives him a link to a website which reports that the ps3's failure rate is less than 1%.my friend is confused because he is on his 3rd ps3.

funny thing is that his xbox has only died once.

it may not be as bad as xbox failure but its certainly a lot more than <1%.but sony will not budge in saying there is no problem.and after 1 year they will not touch it.

your £125 will buy you an xbox.if mine breaks thats what ill be telling them.

hagla5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

There is no way so many of you have really had this many problems with PS3's... I'm not saying they don't die and i'm sure for some of you it is true but there are like 10 replies here already saying "I'm on my third PS3" blah blah blah...
NO WAY are all these claims true

Wrathman5219d ago

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

the only people lying are sony..about their failure rate

JoySticksFTW5219d ago

Unfortunately, the 3.10 firmware hiccups are for real.

I don't think it's widespread, but I have one Real Life friend that was affected by this.

He was playing Fall Out around that time and his PS3 no longer reads Blu-ray movies.

And this was before the deal which Sony offered to replace 60gb's with slims for $120

I'm glad someone is reporting that Sony fixed his for free, but my friend had to go buy a slim because Sony denied it it was their fault.

Maybe he should have pushed them harder

Traveler5219d ago

I had my Bluray drive go out but it was a while ago and I know it wasn't because of a firmware. People have problems around the time a new firmware comes out and they automatically think it was the firmware that did it. That is my opinion at least. Not that it is impossible for firmwares to cause hardware problems, but I don't think that is the reason most of the time.

Pillage055219d ago

My first ps3(40GB) had some bluetooth issues, bluetooth would completely cut out randomly while playing. my second (80GB) got YLOD after about 6 months of use, that one was fixed by sony for free. my third just past the one year mark and is doing good. I sold my first one so I just have the two 80gigs now. One for meh wife, and one for me. :)

lightningsax5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

@Swiftfox

That's exactly what happened to me. I installed 3.1 on my 40GB just before I took Katamari Forever home from the store. I put the disc in and it worked a bit, but the music stopped in the middle of a stage and the game subsequently froze once I left the level. I restarted the PS3, and this time there was no sound and the game froze quickly. At the second restart, the game wasn't read at all.

Like an idiot, I took the game back thinking it was the problem, and got a fresh copy. Came back and it didn't work, so I tried different games, DVD's, and Blu-Rays, and none of them were read at all. I then found out that when the spinning disc icon keeps going to no avail, it's the Blu-Ray drive, and you're screwed.

Well, it was a great reason to sell it back with a refurb fee and get the newly minted Slim! I was a bit poorer, but now I have a quieter, cooler piece of machinery for a bit more than the price of a repair.

One thing I regret is that because I didn't send it to Sony for repairs, my PS3 wasn't registered as dead immediately after 3.1 was released. Sure, those company records are probably unobtainable by an outside group, but it would at least been on their record. Sigh. Sorry, guys.

bjornbear5219d ago

bubs for using your brain (unlike many)

PS3's just die-

then again consider your habits: do you leave it on 24h? Do you EVER switch if off? Is it in a hot dusty pace? Do you swich Bly.rays a lot? Is there a lot of humidity in the room?etc etc...

many more factors than just a firmware guys ;)

ian725219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

My blu-ray died on me while playing Godfather(dons ed) last February, Original 60gig fat, 1 1/2 yr old. Would play CD, DVD but not blu-ray games. Got it replaced with same model for £145. I don't think its the firmware thats the fault, Its the usage and probably poor make in old models. Mine did get hell of a lot of use, 1000's of hours. At least with games with big installs when first played, the blu ray isn't getting as much use as the data is coming more from the Hard drive not disc. That is one good thing about installs on games, this should help with blu-ray usage.
Also many other factors could to blame.

young juice5219d ago

wtf you people need to learn how to take care of your consoles, ive had mine since launch and its still running smooth as ice. i think i might upgrade soon though. i play atleast once a day also.

cl63AMG5219d ago

I'm not too tech savvy so I don't quite understand how a software up date (or firmware if you prefer) can affect the hardware of system, such as a the blu-ray drive.
I've had 2 laser's go out on me. From what I've heard the early 40gb's are notorious for fault lasers which is what I happen to have. Fortunately if you do your research on the forums and stuff its easy to replace it yourself (which I did the 2nd time to save the money).

kneon5219d ago

Much more than other games so it could be MW2 that is the problem.

Anon19745219d ago

Not one, and I know a number of PS3 owners. This simply isn't an issue.
Now the 360, the last 360 owner I knew who hadn't experience RROD finally had his first one die on him making that 100% of 360 owners I know, including myself, who have suffered from one, if not more, hardware failures.

You have to ask how Microsoft can bring in over 4 billion in revenue with the 360 and still barely record any profits. There's your answer right there. Even though they cleverly took a hit a couple of years ago to keep the costs of the warranty replacement off the books going forward, it's still an ongoing cost. It's great that 360's now seem to be less prone to up and dying, but that doesn't matter a lick to the 30 million 360 owners who don't have newer models.

Pistolero5219d ago

...always pulls out his trusty ole RROD stories...but then again why are you talking about that when this is about possible problems with the ps3?...anyway, I guess I am one of the lucky ones...I haven't had a problem with my PS3 or my 360.

Sarcasm5219d ago

I seriously question why a "Tech" blogging website is dumb enough not to realize that Firmware updates in general, regardless of the tech is always a risk. TVs, Phones, and even your momma's brand spankin' new high tech Refrigerator could have a firmware update, and every time there's a risk.

That's actually why I'm starting to dislike all these FW updates for the PS3 unless it's for something significant.

PJ5219d ago

I am so pissed my 80gb just went out two days ago YLOD. I eventually wanted to get a slim but not this soon.

Cold 20005219d ago

Now...what the heck did that have to do with the article...?

Anon19745219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

The article is about PS3's failing. I offered my personal perspective on the issue, which is that I haven't met anyone that's had a problem. I then contrasted that with my experience with the 360. Do you need me to break it down simpler for you?

@ Pistolero. My, what a shiny, new account you have. So who were you before that account? You stated right there you've had no issue with RROD. Thusly, you have no right to judge me. It's like someone telling a Diabetic, "What are you complaining about. I'VE never had diabetes." There are millions of 360 owners who have had their time wasted, over and over by faulty 360 hardware and that's a fact.

I was attempting to frame this "article" with some perspective. It's a fact that millions of 360 owners have suffered the inconvenience of faulty systems.

This story is telling us "We heard from some guy on, like, a forum, that the new update may be causing some kind of problem with, like, the PS3 and stuff? Like, we really don't know and are just running with it instead of investigating."

Please. How many times have we seen this sad little game play out? Over and over we're subjected to "stories" trying to make it sound like there's something wrong with the PS3 on the level of rrod. There's isn't but they keep trying, jumping on any perceived slip-up instead of actually investigating the issue.

I'm also guessing by the amount of disagrees my first comment received, as well as disagrees to anyone else who dared mention they've had no problems with their PS3's, there's a lot of 360 fans trolling the PS3 forums this weekend. No games to play, perhaps? You could always beat Gears or Halo 3 for the 30th time. ;)

pixelsword5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

My 60Gb PS3 got YLoD just when I was about to play Batman: Arkham Asylum. It was on it's third year, (R.I.P. my young friend).

Maybe it was my fault, maybe it wasn't; but it doesn't erase the fact that it happened. :)

I also respect you when you say you never met a person who had a PS3 go bad; with a low rate, I tend to believe you. But I'm telling the truth when I say it happened to me.

I don't think you'll see it happening much at all with the slims, because the older models are power mongers. Yet, if there is something happening, even if there's a chance on the older models, call Sony out on it.

I like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft; but if they pull crap and piss me off, I'll bury them just the same.

Anon19745219d ago

I know it happens, I'm not saying it doesn't. And my point isn't to belittle those that it has happened to. As a guy on his 4th 360, I know how bad it sucks. It's such a huge pain in the ass to go through the process of sending it in, the costs involved, not being able to play the bulk of your games and just the general hole it leaves knowing that something you purchased should be there, but it's not.

I was more trying to draw attention to these articles. For example, this one. It's based on nothing more than a rumor in a forum, and yet they jump all over it like it's fact based, widespread and generally a serious issue. It's a pain, but the issue isn't widespread. We know this, but still these articles crop up almost every time there's an update trying to blow everything out of proportion.

I just don't understand the mentality behind it these articles. Can you imagine if every single Windows update, we were subjected to article after article about how someone's videocard drivers stopped working after the update, or buddy's laptop froze up? Yet someone claims on a forum to have an issue with a PS3 update and they're all over it.

It. Just. Never. Stops.

Two PS3's myself, 3 close friends have one each. I know various other people with ps3's. None of us have EVER had ANY problems. As in ZIP!

n4gn4gn4gn4g5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

I'm on my 3rd PS3 so far in 2.5 years...first time BD drive gave out under warranty...second time it was YLOD outside of warranty.

I used to contribute to a small PS3 focused blog...of the 5 contributors, 4 of us had replaced our PS3s at least once.

So...although I fully believe that the issues are nowhere near PS2 or 360 levels...I think they may be starting to run over the CES industry average faults of 3% within 2 years of purchase.

Again...anecdotal so beleive me or not but you'll see by my commentary history that I'm a PS3 supporter. (and my Avatar is strongly related to SONY)

PS. I didn't hit your disagree.

mauleriscool5219d ago

I've had 2 different ps3s die one me as well. 40gb the blu ray drive died and 80gb metal gear the gpu died.
Looked like this

dalibor5219d ago

Just wanted to comment that I'm on my second 60gig PS3, got that ylod. The new one I got back in 08 has been running strong. No Blu Ray drive failure while playing MW2 & with the update. So far so good. I know two other people with PS3's (40gig models) who have not had any problems. There is no electronic equipment out there that does not fail. Some of them will. Hopefully it's not you that it decides to break down on. Speaking of electronics has there been any with no failures? I doubt it but just wondering if somebody perhaps knew.

InFAMOUS15219d ago

I had a 40GIG blu ray drive die on me under warranty. Gave it 2 my cousin when it got back and bought an 80GB no problems its been just over a year.
This is 4 sure a MW2 problem.. I can play one of my other 15 games and NEVER does my disc drive work as much as it does when MW2 is it.. I stopped playing it for that very reason.. My comment when MW2 came out on my PSN profile was MW2- BLURAY KILLER!! It NEVER stops reading.. So I twitter fourzerotwo and he says to install it 2 the HDD.. LIKE REALLY 402? Do you know nothing about your game? Do you realize that you didnt make it to install on PS3 but you did on the 360? WOW!! this is not firmware.. simply lazy development

lightningsax5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

It's great to hear that you have five surviving systems. I had one 40GB system, the Blu-Ray drive broke, and the repair cost didn't outweigh the trade-in fee to get the Slim. No one's saying that 100% of them were affected; otherwise it would be blatantly obvious and no one would have to make an article. I loved my old PS3, and I love my new Slim, but yeah, the exact problem mentioned in the article happened to me. Whether it's the firmware or a coincidence is completely up in the air.

Software or not, Interesting Link.

Honestly , Interesting. PS3 "Fanies" should read it.

darkequitus5219d ago

I have not played by my PS3 for two week. Today, I upgraded to 3.15 and started up UC2. The was making some chronic grinding noise (like the laser was having trouble picking up the track). Maybe I just did not notice it before or maybe my 60GB is on its was out anyway.

TheFreak5219d ago

say what!?!? You havn`t played Uncharted 2 yet!?!? If not I suggest that you do NOW! You are missing out on the best game this gen!

LordMarius5219d ago

My PS3 always does that with Uncharted 2 but no other game.
It kind of scares me whats gonna happen when I put GOW3 in :/

darkequitus5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

@MariusElijah

Interesting. Then it is just the way UC2 starts up then. That is a relief. I thought I would have to shell out for a slim and a PS2. :)

LordMarius5219d ago

well I dont know if its normal, seems like it puts it through some stress which cant be good?

dalibor5219d ago

Just so you people know before popping in a game always clean the disk. I had a fingerprint on U2 game disk & it would not load the game. I thought it was my PS3 at first so I tried everything with my PS3 to get the game to load. Than I saw a finger print on the U2 game disk that was located near the hole(inner most part on the data side) & when I cleaned it off it worked. The simplest things can solve your problem at times. And I always make sure I have at least 8gigs on my hard drive just in case.

LordMarius5219d ago

No, its not fingerprints, it has been doing that since the very first time I insert it but its only at the beginning, once it reaches The Naughty Dog logo it stops

dalibor5219d ago

Then it doesn't sound like a fingerprint b/c when I experienced my prob it wouldn't load anything. It was just a blank screen. Hopefully nothing happens to your system Marius.

darkequitus5219d ago

Yes, that churning only happens at the beginning when the screen is black and you have that dagger down at the bottom right.

Anyway, my UC2 has not left my PS3 since I got it.

OmarJA-N4G5219d ago

I only turn on my 360 for my DVD movies still getting RROD.

Wrathman5219d ago

oh you lie so much omar. i never use my xbox for movies.thats wot my ps3 is for.it upscales dvds and is silent.

i know your lying coz the xbox is like a jet engine and you cant hear wot your watching.unless your watchin TOP GUN and want some nice jet engine effects like a surround sound system.

DaTruth5219d ago

I had that same problem with UC1. That coin would just keep spinning and spinning. Removed the disk, cleaned it and it started right up. Weird because I never dirty my disks or touch them; They all look like new!

I hope all the assholes who buy these get stuck in lobbies with each other. I skipped new COD games for a long time and a short time with MW2 convinced me to go back to on a hiatus.

With the skill-based matchmaking (engagement-based would be more accurate), I imagine this will make the game even more miserable for most players when the matchmaking has decided it's time for a tough lobby.

I played the OG MW2 recently on the Series X and it's disheartening how much more fun it is. I don't even care about the balance issues anymore. lol

Look at Minecraft. The game hasn’t went anywhere since Microsoft bought them. No 4K, no 120fps, no graphics pack, and no Ray Tracing. Just some new biomes, mobs, and more skins as usual.

Same could be said about Rare. Who knows what will happen to Activision once they’re under Microsoft’s roof. We can all take a good guess though.
