Super Stardust 3D: 720p,120fps confirmed

Digital Foundry writes:
"Last Saturday, Digital Foundry took a look at the 3D gaming potential soon to be unlocked by a new system upgrade for the PlayStation 3. We talked about what was out there already, discussed Ubisoft's Avatar and the performance levels of current 3D titles, and suggested that Sony was planning something more technologically advanced than what we've seen in the current implementations of 3D games - something that justified the upcoming firmware upgrade.

Our theory? It made sense that the PS3 upgrade would facilitate support for the new 3D protocols in the HDMI 1.4 standard, specifically the provision for full resolution 3D - basically a double-height, or double-width framebuffer. Thanks to an assist from SCEE, Digital Foundry had the chance to pose a few questions to the Housemarque Super Stardust HD tech team: engine lead Seppo Halonen and creative director Harri Tikkanen."

Super stardust really was the best game of its kind and this is definitely the logical step up.

The Meerkat5220d ago

120 fps and 4D (=3D stereoscopic?) were Sir Karutagi goals for the PS3. They are almost here.

From the article:

"We're talking about something not just based on low-resolution buffers as in Invincible Tiger and Avatar, but something new, exciting and a whole lot more challenging to achieve: a true technical leap, and a definite unique selling point for the Sony platform."

Redempteur5220d ago

"We render two full-resolution 720p frames with identical content compared to standard mode. Doubling the rendering is quite a challenge in itself to begin with, and we are happy with current 720p 60FPS stereo mode."

8.3ms to render a framme

ho ho ho ( that's awesome )

Ju5220d ago

I like how they solved this. Quote:

"I solved the issue by moving vertex processing from GPU to SPU and merging as many objects as possible to one drawcall."

So, they combine polys with the SPU to just draw a couple instead of many. Requires quite some setup to be able to do that before the rasterizing stage. More and more creative ideas to use the SPUs are popping up lately.

i_am_interested5220d ago

where are the people who said sony was bluffing with its 120fps claim?

it seems like every month more people eat crow

Ju5220d ago

I'm curious. Is there actually a mode which support 720p@120Hz on the HDMI protocol (or even composite) ? If so, they could really run SDHD @ 120 for the 2D mode...But I think there is no signal going beyond 60Hz (except PC monitors).

i_am_interested5220d ago (Edited 5220d ago )

thats what all these new shutter based 3d tvs coming out are, theyre tvs that refresh at 120fps but more importantly can accept a 120hz(fps) source and actually display all 120hz(fps) at 120fps, its most likely that youll need some kind of high speed hdmi 1.3 cable though

SuperStrokey11235220d ago

SO if you have a 120hz or better TV you can use the new 3d feature (with the glasses of course)? Or do you need something additional hardware wise?

i_am_interested5219d ago (Edited 5219d ago )

if you have the tv, the glasses, and the ps3 then youre all set, all thats needed is for the ps3 to receive the necessary firmware update

but youre tv has to be able to accept 120hz source and actually display all 120 fps, or just have a recently released 3d capable tv like those by samsung, mitsubishi, and a few others

a lot of tvs that came out a few years ago were 120hz but they couldnt accept all 120hz from a source, they maxed out at 60hz and just duplicated frames

SuperStrokey11235219d ago

I have a Song 46W4100, will that work with this? ITs a 120hz TV but im not sure abotu 120hz inputs.

I plan to snag Stardust VR soon. It is on PSN sale for cheap.

FTLmaster1107d ago

Do it! It’s a seriously addictive experience. Housemarque is the master of modern arcade classic gameplay. Curious to see how Returnal turns out tbh.

Knushwood Butt1107d ago

Thanks. Downloaded it and will be playing it shortly.

Pre-ordered Returnal too.

P_Bomb1107d ago

Loved Alienation. Good co-op!

Knushwood Butt1107d ago (Edited 1107d ago )

Yep, had a lot of fun playing it with my kids. Although they always fight over the drops.

Housemarque licenses Unreal Engine 4 for a new and unannounced title

Finland’s longest standing game development studio, Housemarque, today announced that it is licensing Unreal Engine 4 and moving away from its own in-house technology for future projects, including a soon-to-be-announced title.

TheOttomatic912334d ago

Damn it sucks they won't be doing any SP games anymore.

arkard2334d ago

Agreed, I found d their games to be fun and enjoyable... To bad I seem to be the minority.

TGG_overlord2334d ago

Well, I haven't played all of their games, but "Nex Machina" is pretty darn cool imo.

BrianOBlivion2334d ago

I didn't read that. I've read that while they are planning to expand into multiplayer, the only thing they've decided to give up on is the top-down arcade shooter style of games because the last couple have sold in decreasing amounts.
Too bad for me as I've enjoyed most of their games. Now I feel bad that I didn't buy Matterfall but I just didn't like the addition of platforming into the mix.
I haven't read anywhere that those MP games wouldn't include SP.

TGG_overlord2334d ago

"I didn't read that. I've read that while they are planning to expand into multiplayer, the only thing they've decided to give up on is the top-down arcade shooter style of games because the last couple have sold in decreasing amounts."

- Ah, now I got what @TheOttomatic91 meant with "Damn it sucks they won't be doing any SP games anymore.". Well, to be fair, "Matterfall" isn't exactly one of their better titles...

Einhander19712333d ago (Edited 2333d ago )

Um don't expect anything good from these guys anymore.

Atticus_finch2333d ago

IDK what to expect. Me and my GF love HM hopefully they keep making couch coop games.
