MAG Beta Impressions…. Does it live up to the hype so far?

CouchMercenaries.com - I recently had the chance to jump into the M.A.G. Beta on the PS3. For those of you not familiar with the title, it stands for Massive Action Game. (Yes, I agree its the worst title ever for a shooter). While certainly there is time for this game to have changes, I think given its pending 1/26/2010 release date, its safe to assume this is going to be a fair representation of the final product.

Has there even been any hype for this game? I rarely even hear hardcore fanboy's talking about mag.

SKullDugger5239d ago

I was part of the first beta and the only thing massive about this game is the size of the maps and the rest of the game is average at best. I myself will not pay $59.99 for this game.

LukaX235239d ago

Stop trying to stir hype down. The game is great, but it's not for everyone (no game ever is). If you like SOCOM (the old SOCOM), and you like first-person shooters, then you're going to love MAG. Zipper does an excellent job of making 256 players work correctly online. Don't believe me? Try the free open beta yourself, it's on the PS Store right now.

CaptainKratos5239d ago

this game is fun as i posted in the other article that didn't have this annoying always wanting attention title "Does it live up to the hype so far?" every time i play this game i never lag it runs soooo smooth. the recount does annoy me.im like noooo 30 seconds again.RAVEN FTW!!!!

sikbeta5239d ago (Edited 5239d ago )

Poor Canucks23 soul NVM

This Game will be Huge for obvious reasons and Awesome too, even if the COD-and-Generic-fps lovers will don't give it a try

Is not their fault either, a Tactical shooter is not the same as eh..well..mmm the every year FPS with ZERO skill needed to play

nycredude5239d ago (Edited 5239d ago )

Good for you. I'm sure you didn't have a problem paying $65 for MW2 with half a single player and the same noob mp as MW1.

I was in the beta also, at first the game didn't really interest me but the more I played it the better it got. It is very tactical and yet feels fun. It really opens up when you figure out what you want to be and start ranking up. IMO it's for people who are serious about their fps and is willing to commit the time and effort to contribute to your faction. It feels like Socom and COD had a baby and it was injected with steriods.

TooTall195239d ago

I wish those two never met cause they made one UGLY baby lol. Worst grenade animation ever.

gaffyh5239d ago

@patriots - Don't worry, you won't have to. MAG costs $40, because it is an online only game, which is possible on PS3 because online play is free. For example on 360, because online play isn't free, companies wouldn't make online only games, and always have a campaign.

moneybuyseverything5239d ago (Edited 5239d ago )

This game is one of the centerpieces of PS3 fans lists. The so called Technical Feats of MAG have been hyped more than any game I can remember. Played the beta twice and deleted the beta afterwards.

HighDefinition5239d ago

MAG is SOCOM2 as a FPS. I prefer Team-based gameplay over run and gun gameplay, so this is one of the best games/FPSs I`ve ever played. I can`t wait for the Final Version. Companies shouldn`t even put out BETAS, if every fool and their mom react like this. If you don`t like delete it.

BTW, VALOR FTMFW ;)

HighDefinition5239d ago

"The so called Technical Feats of MAG have been hyped more than any game I can remember."

Like it or NOT, MAG is a "technical feat" 256 runs w/ ZERO lag.

And I find it hard 2 believe you even played a 256 player match in playing the beta twice, since it doesn`t unlock until level 10. :)

camachoreloaded88065239d ago

how many of those 256 people had mics, which are essential to the whole team-oriented gameplay that the developers have been touting around?

Exactly.

Rainstorm815239d ago (Edited 5239d ago )

Im in the open beta and MAG is lackluster at best. Yes a technical feat but is it a good game?? MW2(1.5) Battlefield bad company 2(Beta) and Killzone 2 are all better FPS games.

Lag dosent exist on MAG but unfortunatly Fun dosent exist either. There are far better FPS to spend 60 bucks on, MAG feels like a bargin bin generic FPS...Where's the "Massive Action".....and no blood???? U2 and BF:BC2 have blood at rated Teen.

Pillage055239d ago

I have to say, I tried the beta and wasn't impressed. Just not my style I guess. At this point I'd be worried about how large the community is gonna be before I would put down my Christmas cash down. There are already a lot of other titles Q1 on ps3 that will be chipping away at those funds.

but that's just me.

kneon5239d ago

In the closed beta I'd say it typically ranged from 30-50% had mics, it seems less now but I'm sure it will improve as people realize how important it it. But in the games I've played most squad leaders had mics. As just a grunt it's not critical to have a mic but once you start to move up the command chain it's going to be hard to do well if you don't have a mic.

HighDefinition5239d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

But some of you are very mistaken if you don`t think this game is gonna do well within the community it was intended for. As the clans grow (like in Socom2) so will MAG. MAG is a great game and Zipper has done a great job, if you can`t see that, thats your problem.

I`m so disappointed w/ the new generation of gamers.

Rainstorm815238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

birthyear 1981..............I have experienced countless games from Atari to PS3 and there is nothing great about MAG other than its player count. Dont blame the gamers blame the game.

MW is a glitchy twitch shooter that 8 yr olds can master but the fun factor is there. MAG seems like a bad mix of COD and BF. Hey PS3 comes out with alot of great exclusives but history will not recognize MAG as one of them.

The slow paced gameplay of SOCOM is gone with the PS2. And i was a Die Hard SOCOM Fan. Now fast paced run and gun games like MW, U2 and Gears replaced those slower tactical games. MAG = outdated

Dont be disappointed, get with the times...its games like these that are shaping the world of competitive multiplayer on consoles.

evrfighter5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

"Like it or NOT, MAG is a "technical feat" 256 runs w/ ZERO lag. "

planetside 330vs330 runs w/ ZERO lag and your great grandma's computer could run it.

It's not a technical feat, try try again

Saaking5238d ago

Personally, while it's good, it's just not my type of game.

Sevir045238d ago

Yet the only Console and developers doing something like this is Sony and it's PS3... really? where's huxely on the 360...?

It's the only Console game doing this on the Planet right now. Go on, Refute it, i'm waiting, Saying a console attaining 256 different players on limited un-upgradable specs playing all distinctively in close proximity if each other is not a technical feat with that level of graphics is just a load of hogwash.

On consoles This is a technical feat and thats what he's talking about. dont bring up PCs because we are soley on the subject of Home Consoles...

Idoits I swear. you stick out like a sore thumb.

You'd like me to I'm sure you'd love me to

But I'll stick with with my statement. The dreamcast could run planetside

So no

It's not a technological feat

:)

ReservoirDog3165238d ago

You know, I didn't like it. I was in the beta just before the public one and it just didn't go with me. But by and large, I don't care for multiplayer. Just a select few games like Uncharted 2 and maybe Killzone 2.

But I have a few people on my friends list who really like it. Guess it's a love or hate type of deal. Wish zipper luck with it.

Gun_Senshi5238d ago

Get lvl 10 and try domination.

COD is slow paced near it

UltimateIdiot9115238d ago

I just tried domination yesterday, it was crazy. You will surly need a mic in that mode. So far, I've enjoyed the BETA a lot but I won't be able to pick up the title and play till maybe towards the summer due to school work.

RAVEN FTW.

I don't get why so many are addicted to MW2, it was just a MW re-hash and was so limited in it's play. I'm not the greatest fan of MAG yet, but c'mon, the graphics are good, pretty sure they are as good as MW2. Just drop the MW comparisons, it's not THAT good.

Canucks235239d ago

It's actually pretty sad how bad mag's graphics are. Usually first party Sony games/exclusives look mind blowingly amazing. Mw2 definately looks better than mag, and the gunplay is much smoother. (don't get me wrong, i'm not a mw2 freak, it's a very flawed game). What i don't understand is why people would buy mag, over a game like bfbc2. When that game does everything that mag does, but better. Besides being those huge player battles of course, but that doesn't even matter because the maps are so big and sectioned off that it's basically like a 16v16 at all times anyways.

CaptainKratos5239d ago

i was really addicted to COD4,i mean like really addicted.i thought the same was going to happen with MW2,it did for a while but then i started playing other games.and BETAS like BFBC2 and MAG.also playing Uncharted 2 "There's plenty of me to go around games"

young juice5239d ago

dude have you played domination, its just utter chaos most of the time.

Raf1k15239d ago (Edited 5239d ago )

You have to remember the game allows for 256 players playing at one time. The graphics are bound to take a hit.

edit: you mentioned it's flawed but didn't actually mention any flaws you came across unless you're implying the lower graphics quality is a flaw which isn't actually a flaw since it's designed and made to be like that.

Dead_Cell5239d ago (Edited 5239d ago )

I've just finished a match playing as Valor attacking Raven.
We had all the AA batteries down, all of the objectives opened and we were two thirds the way to victory with five minutes left,it was a slim chance of winning at best.
On the five minute mark our OIC (Officer In Charge) came on the Mic and issued the order -

"We have five minutes left to win or lose this, and it looks like we're going to be cutting it fine. What I want you all to do is your squad leaders mark an objective on the map, if you are on the A/B side hit A,if you are on C/D side hit C, if you are on E/F side hit E, and if you are on G/H side hit G. We have no way of winning this if we spread ourselves thin and I'm going to issue airstrikes in 10 seconds, wait till they land and then go for it. Good luck."

The airstrikes landed and -everybody- advanced onto there objectives in APC's, our squad leader issued a marker on E and we got to work.
The best part was holding E and watching the eight letters at the top of the screen, sure enough A went blue, then C, we held E and then FINALLY objective G turned blue.
Unfortunately we ran out of time with a sliver of damage left to do,if we had FIVE MORE SECONDS we would have won it. Either way that game has just officially proven to me that this game can and will work properly.
If you want a good strategic and tactical FPS then MAG is definitely the game for you.

kneon5239d ago

It was only a matter of time for the open beta to start to get there as well. It takes a while for people to get out of the rambo mentality and start working as a team

FragMnTagM5239d ago (Edited 5239d ago )

I am not bashing or getting my hopes up yet as I still have mixed feelings about it.

When playing through, the tactical feel is apparent immediately. If you do not work as a team, you will be slaughtered. I really like that. I think the graphics are decent considering everything going on. I like the way you load out your character and think it is a bit more intuitive than the way MW2 handles it. It also has a few more options than MW2, sans the perks. It also gives some decent tools to where you can make an engineering class with heavy armor, med kit, an assault rifle, a handgun, or any other combination. It really is pretty nice.

There are some minor things that kind of threw me off while playing. For one thing, for a lack of a better word, it feels "stiff." What I mean by this is the way your person moves about the map. When you are walking, strafing, or running it feels too stiff with the animations (or camera work since it is first person). That is really the only major gripe I had with it. What is a major gripe for me is really not a big deal and I am considering a purchase.

I will play the beta more and form a better opinion on it.
P.S. GO VALOR.

execution175238d ago

MAG, HR, and WKC all going to be crippling my limited budget:( month later its BFBC2 and GOW3

For the first 3 hours I was seriously unimpressed with this game, but I am glad I kept on playing. I now have around 8 hours under my belt and once you get used to the shooting mechanics and learn to slow down and think about what you are doing its a real blast.

For me there is no question, this game looks pretty horrible, especially compared to most other recent games, but the sound is nice and the coms are crystal clear, it often sounds like American squad mates are in the next room (I am a Brit).

Gotta say, this article is woefully inaccurate, I have not experienced lag ONCE in all the hours I have played, its incredibly stable - I have a connection of around 6-7Mbs if you are wondering.

The trouble with this game is that it is very unforgiving and the learning curve is VERY steep. You start with guns that are inaccurate and weak so you get your arse handed to you by more experienced players. Also, whats the goddamn deal with dying if you are stabbed, even if you get a few rounds into your attacker - unrealistic and annoying as hell.

The knife is supposed to be a last resort, but just like MW2, people exploit its lethality and charge around knifing everyone - that is bollocks. I have played PC games online for probably 20 years, and if you were left using a knife you were knackered!

FragMnTagM5239d ago

There were quite a few people just running around our spawn area knifing everyone. That really pissed me off. They need to fix that somehow, as it really is annoying. What I started doing was moving away from the base as quickly as I could, and find a good sniping position and I picked those spawn killers off for about five minutes. Eventually they stopped coming back, and we could play the damned game without getting knifed every time we spawned.

They should give less xp for getting only kills with the knife or something along that line to discourage that crap.

CaptainKratos5238d ago

i have a 1.03 mbs and it still runs faaking smooth i love it!!!

madjedi5238d ago

@4.1 i can tolerate a knife being an instant kill, but since it is a knife and not a katana i shouldn't be killed by it from 3-5 feet away, the dude should have to almost on top of me to kill me. And really it should either 2 stabs at full health or 1 if the target doesn't know your there.

timestoby5239d ago

i dont see a need for this many players online in one game, but i havnt played it but briefly. id say its a flop. wheres the mmos like free realms and dcuniverseonline

HighDefinition5239d ago

Does anyone find this as funny as I do.

Skeeter5238d ago

I will make the statement that Half life series is MUCH better than MW2 with lower graphics.

Mag is a team game. The Cod series has destroyed the fps game type by allowing making a rambo run and gun game. Mag may not have as ggod graphics as MW2 but it sure does run at a higher resolution and the TACTICAL gameplay is off the charts.

Gamers really need to get their heads out of the gutter on this one, especially ones who claim they hate the game after playing it one time.

MAG was one of the most ambitious shooters ever and deserves a PS5 sequel

Zipper Interactive were once one of Sony's most important studios and became a household name due to their work on the SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs series during the PlayStation 2's heyday. Their most ambitious title was MAG. Could it make a comeback?

Best game ever. I had put over 1700hrs into that game before it deteriorated too far with cheaters getting out of the map and sadly decided it was time to let it die (Zipper had already been closed down by that time).

rdgneoz31566d ago

3 teams of 32 fighting it out would be considered Battle Royaleish. If you're gonna saying teams are OK when you start doing teams of 2 or 3 or 4, then 32v32v32 should work. And on besides that, it had 128 v 128 which was insanely fun.

I personally hadn't played much of it. I did spend a lot of time in PlanetSide 2 though (somewhat like MAG). Games like these tend to get overrun by cheaters and then ruined too often.

Teflon021566d ago

MAG didn't have that issue as far as I remember. I use to love the 256 matches. That game had an amazing community. Everyone actually communicated and played together. No one B****ed at the team. Everyone understood there was so much going on that if things are going wrong. Everyone had to think of new strategies.
Fav moment was when all 3 other squads 32 took their objectives but we were struggling with ours and had one more to blow up. The other leaders were communicating asking if the 2 nearest squads should send ppl. Our leader was like Naw I got a idea. So he told us all to die and set ourselves at the nearest hills prone without being seen. So we all did and surrounded the areas.
He said everyone on his count throw your grenades. Then snipers go all out and everyone else run in. They won't be able to get everyone and if needed the snipers go in about 10 seconds after.

Everyone did that and I got to the objective and set it off. 9 of us survived and got it. felt amazing to say I got the objective, cover me in that moment. Wish it was PS4 so I could have saved that moment
It was literally the coolest moment I had in a online shooter, closest since was BF4.

Muzikguy1566d ago

@Teflon

That does indeed sound like an awesome moment. One that makes games like these memorable for sure. It does seem like MAG had a lot more cooperation than most any online shooter

Teflon021566d ago

It did because you absolutely can't get no where in it without teamwork. It also didn't have an extremely big base of players. Everyone who played really wanted to play. I really hope they bring it back and do the same thing to only have serious players get into the big matches again

UltraNova1566d ago

Wow, what a run! This game looks better than PUBG!

Muzikguy1566d ago

Watching that video you wouldn't think the game was on PS3.

Spenok1566d ago

I adored this game too. Some of my best FPS online memories on it. So freaking good.

I'd love to see another game like this come out at some point. And NOT like Planetside... M.A.G. was something special.

yellowgerbil1566d ago

Yeah problem is if it existed now adays, it would likely be riddled with xp boosts and dance moves and all that other pay garbage...
MAG and Warhawk are the only 2 online games I ever got into, and both need a PROPER sequel on PS5.
Remember the first time I got 100 kills in a match, was in a turret with a repair kit and just mowed down wave after wave on Valors map.

Really interesting as an Xbox owner at the time. This game had captured my interest as a kid but I never got a chance to play it. Being on PS4 and soon possibly PS5, I would love to see this franchise brought back to life. I imagine with the power of next gen it would be really quite fun.

From what I hear and what I remember, this game was FAR ahead of it's time. A real shame it never truly took off from my understanding.

grifter0241566d ago

I'm an xbox boy since mech warrior but got a ps3 slim for mag. If you liked halo or cod you'd have had a blast in mag. Was one of the first games you could actually do something other than shooting and still make a difference in game.

PS4 needs something like it. In the multiplayer space it's far behind the Xbox, there are no quality multiplayer games on it that aren't on other consoles.

Man do I miss mag and zipper.

TheSinsibleOne1691d ago

Seriously though. Nowadays this and next gen are practically begging for a new MAG.

zodiac9091691d ago

How did we go from having games like resistance 1, 2, warhawk with 30 vs 30 player battles, and M.A.G. with 128 vs 128 players, ON LAST GEN to now having 20 vs 20...such a step back.

JEECE1691d ago

Because Sony hadn't figured out how to market their exclusives yet. Plus at that time COD craze was at its peak. So "generic high school bro #7," who was the primary purchaser of FPSs at that time (or at least represented a crowd necessary to sustain a playerbase), if he even had a PS3, would have just seen a game like MAG as a "copycat of Black Ops, man."

Not to mention MAG was pretty terribly uninviting for new people after awhile, because it was more skill-based. This was great for veterans, but if you weren't willing to put in the time getting destroyed for awhile, you would never appreciate the game. The Battlefield: Bad Company and BF:3 games out during that gen were far more accessible to lower level players.

Vegamyster1691d ago

Battlefield 4 was at the start of the generation and had 64 players, to me it depends more on how the map/gameplay is utilized, i enjoyed the 20vs20 modes more in the MW Beta than the 64 player ground war mode.

_SilverHawk_1811d ago

I remember this game and it was amazing. I would like it if Sony would make another one because this game was ahead of it's time.

RememberThe3571810d ago

It was an amazing concept and it was a cool game, it was just ahead of it's time. I played the sh!t outta MAG, but the game itself played just okay. I'd love to have seen a sequel, even just a spiritual successor, especially with the next gen coming and the way cloud computing has advanced a game like that nowadays would be awesome.

Elwenil1810d ago

It may have been amazing if you played for SVER, but if you played for Raven or Valor, it was an unbalanced mess. I had some fun with it, but the player count was an illusion at best and false advertising at it's worst. The map and faction balance was so ridiculously skewed you knew who was going to win as soon as you saw what team you were against. It definitely had some interesting ideas, but was far from an amazing experience in my opinion. I would have much rather Zipper have made another SOCOM game rather than MAG.

darthv721810d ago

that game would make for a great battle royale release. So many players all at once... it was ahead of its time for a console shooter.

TheGamez1001811d ago

Was such an underrated game. One of my most favorite fps of last gen. So unfortunate zipper was closed down. Imagine if it was a success and thered be a 2nd game by now.....

TekoIie1811d ago (Edited 1811d ago )

I can think of many better games that I've yet to play...

"Almost 10 years ago the greatest first person shooter came out"

HAH. So is Planetside 2 now the best FPS ever? Because it does everything MAG can and does it far better. I'm afraid that MAG is basically your standard FPS but uses scale as it's selling point. The vast majority of shooters that focus on smaller scale matches have gameplay leaps and bounds better than MAG so it is definitely not the greatest FPS.

I know many people are going to try and refute this by telling me to look at the three factions but MAG has literally no character. The game is call 'Massive. Action. Game' for gods sake which is a contender for 'The Worst Title a Game Could Have' award. I've never been a fan of Zipper but I hear great things about them from their PS2 days. However, with MP gaining popularity in the generation that followed I think it says a lot that they couldn't keep up with the competition.

Knushwood Butt1810d ago

'HAH. So is Planetside 2 now the best FPS ever? Because it does everything MAG can and does it far better.'.

It was released years later.

Was there anything offering what MAG did when MAG was released?

TekoIie1810d ago

"Was there anything offering what MAG did when MAG was released?"

Yes, Planetside 1.

Knushwood Butt1810d ago

Fair enough.

Can't say I've played it, but I enjoyed MAG for a while.

FantasticBoss1809d ago

MAG was one of the very few games trying to do scale like it did, but I think it missed the mark. Wish it could have had a sequel though as they may have been able to iterate on it to create something pretty neat.

Sony had a awesome approach to online in the PS2 days with SOCOM co op that had games working together to achieve a tactical goal they pioneered voice chat on the PS2 for SOCOM but as they steamrolled ahead it was clear team Deathmatch would take over in popularity which shifted zippers approach so all their experience amounted for not much when designing online in the PS3 era.
It still was a decent game but couldn't stand out compared to cod which had millions of players consistently

yellowgerbil1811d ago

Loved mag had over 1700hrs into it across many accounts, remember my first 100 kill sabotage game, was insane

BLow1809d ago

Yes, so do I and not that game they released on PS3. I'm talking the one Zipper did and not Slant Six. At least Slant Six tried to do the series justice once they fixed the issues.

The one Zipper did didn't feel like Socom to me. It felt more like Ghost Recon to be honest. I absolutely loved the voice commands and I figured they would be even better on next gen hardware. They didn't even bother doing anything.

Maybe, I just wanted it more grounded and not so techy if that makes sense. I just wanted to go into jungles or missions just using my wits and patience and not have to use a bunch of gadgets. I wanted to be able to give orders with my voice to squad members. Yeah, they can at least have earpieces lol.

It's hard to explain but I know the old school Socom players know what I'm saying. Socom just had a certain feeling and the new game didn't feel that way. Slant Six yes. Zipper no...

We can only hope but if they bring it back they have to do it right. If not don't bother and just make something new. I rather have the memories I had with Socom be mostly positive than negative. Unless you pull a God of War, don't bother lol.

I've already said too much but that goes to show how much I loved Socom. Especially 1 and 2.....

Game was simply ahead of its time. If mag came out now with improved graphics people would be blown away. Back then people whined about the graphics even though it had players literally everywhere. It was several great games in one. Battlefield, Ghost Recon, and Call of duty.

What exactly was it ahead of its time in? Player count? Planetside released in 2003 and and played count per match was over 300.

The BETA for MAG was one of my fondest gaming moments. I was highly anticipating the start of the beta servers but I had school that day. I had started downloading it that morning as soon as it was available and just when it finished downloading I found out school was cancelled, last minute, because of weather. BEST. SNOW DAY. EVER. I played the beta all day, continuing to put off my homework :P

Well have I got news for you pal! Planetside 2 has been available for nearly 4 years on the PS4 and longer on PC and people still aren't blown away. Maybe the novelty of scale is actually overrated and people don't care as much about it which is why MAG failed when multiplayer shooters were at peak popularity during it's lifetime?

If you were blown away by 256 players in 2010 why would you not have been blown away by 1000 roughly 2-3 years later?
