Modern Warfare 2 Expansion Coming to Xbox this Year

The blockbuster video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is about to get bigger. Microsoft announced an expansion pack available first on Xbox 360 at CES this evening.

First off, everyone already knew that MS paid off IW and Activision to be first in line at the DLC handout (please give us a fix cause we ain't got no good games) crack house.

And secondly, DLC from a scrub developer like IW and a shoo shoo bird publisher like Activision SHOULD go to the 360 before coming to the PS3. Everyone knows that the 360 is the ultimate beta platform. Sheesh.

I got a weird PM from someone and thought I'd post what I told that person here.

The reason why I'm confused by Activision's decision to go with a timed release is because the total market on both right now is just incredibly large. It's larger than the exclusive title markets on both, which is just an amazing feat.

With such a large market, the most logical business decision would be to ensure the highest profit possibilities by hitting them both with the same content to get as many of the 'current' player base to buy the content before they move onto other games, which reduces the likelyhood that those players will buy the content. Especially considering the slew of games coming in the next three months alone, which is pretty much suffocating players with options.

By delaying it on the PS3, they lose the opportunity for more sales as players begin to move onto other games and gain absolutely on the 360 end by publishing it at the expected release date since the number of people who would have bought it there will do so regardless of its availability on the platform on which they don't play the game.

The fact that they constantly recycle old maps proves they are a lazy developer dead set out for you cash and that's it.

The fact that I don't like all the changes they made to make the game more appealing to casual gamers has nothing to do with it.

Further more just because 200,000 xbox owners are playing it at any one time doesn't make it great by any means. That just means heaps of people bought it based on the hype it received from the media (myself included).

In my opinion MW2 was a large step back from WaW in terms of game play, level design quality and multi player features...

MW2 a large step back from WaW gameplay? So I guess you didn't mind the constant grenade spamming and the endless amount of respawing enemies WoW had? MW2 improved the gameplay in a lot of ways by taking this stuff out.
You my not like the changes with the multiplayer but I have no problem with care packages and all the other new perks and kill streak awards. I hated the tanks in WaW and was never a fan of the shipped maps. And unless someone found a new glitch no one is gonna get nuke that fast within the first three mins. Laughing at the SFs. Apparently MS paid them millions for the timed exclusive. So Activision suck. If it had been the other way around and Sony had the timed exclusive, Activision would be doing this out of caring for the PS3 fan base and in turn be awesome for doing it.

i dont know if anyone else has noticed this, but the Battlefield Bad Company 2 beta was extremely popular. and by going exclusive to Microsoft, Infinity Ward just gave DICE even MORE time to get a firm hold of PS3 gamers with bad company 2. it just seems like a dumb business move.
ah well, i was really disappointed in MW2 so I won't be buying the DLC anyway.. but i was rather surprised to see such a boneheaded business move by IW.

Good for 360 owners. PS3 extra content is comming later I heard but if not than I won't be crying. There are a ton of games this year to keep me busy other than MW2. I just picked up Bayonetta and Darksiders and still need to finish The Saboteur and a few more I got for x-mas. Also this month is MAG. Next month AvP....tons of games to keep me busy untill this hits the PS3....oh and Battlefield 2 will take most of my online time anyway. :)

if it had come out on the PS3 first they would be claiming it was full of bugs. And that the game was built around the 360, thats why the DLC will be better on the 360.

and as for your DLC comment, while the game did garner massive sales the shortness on the PS3 side of things truly hampered its playable success. take it form me. i have a copy and still haven't finished it. i am to busy playing GOW 1 and 2, demon souls and borderlands to worry about that game. And before you take my head off, in regards to the online component, its good just not great. Its a typical shoot out.

all you 360 fanboys stop with your complaining about our PS3 exclusives. you wanted to make this gen about exclusivity so Sony responded and so far you are walking backwards and its not working for you. yes you will have your handful of exclusives this year, but so will we. Mad, not really. Point #1 was the go/no-go for me. Point #2 was just added firepower. But, they do have to weight the cost of offending people and will it cost them money in the long run. That and how many people will they loose on the play station before they finally role it out. I typically only play a really good game for about 1-2 months and never/rarely touch it again. It means something. It means the 360 owners will be enjoying this for how ever long until it comes out on the PS3. It also means that many fans of Modern Warfare 2 will tend to gravitate towards the 360. Believe me, when you are a big fan of something having to wait months to play it can feel like torture.

The 360 already has the better performing version of MW2 and now it also has some timed exclusive content on the way.

What you don't understand is that the timing is completely wrong. Bad Company 2 will come out around that same week, already giving the upper hand to PS3 (beta), giving the DLC for xbox 360 first will just mean that PS3 boys and girls will just be buying BFBC2 (like me).
And yes your are right, MS do get the upper hand with developers, but obviously there is something behind it. Money, paying millions of dollars is a waste for 1 or 2 weeks exclusivity is a waste.

It's not like they are shutting out the other company. If you have a PS3 you will get it later...period. Doesn't make you want to go out and buy a 360 so you can get it sooner. FTR, I have both systems and I play the 360 version since the system is more designed for FPS's, but I LOVE my PS3. It has it's flaws but that muthaf-cka is a tank. It's stable and I trust it's integrity. Their exclusives are top notch, but the online aspects don't compete with XBL. That is the biggest flaw next to installing every game and downloads taking forever. When I dropped my laptop and needed a new motherboard, my PS3 saved my life so there's no hating going on here. I just think Activision wanted to do this moreso than Microsoft, because it would be throwing money away for nothing. It's just DLC for game that is already sold. Not the same as when everyone was told beforehand that GTA4 on 360 will have 2 exclusive episodes and you had to decide which version you were going to buy. Microsoft has a whole year to blow up and Mass Effect 2 drops in 20 days, so they know what's at stake.

Better exclusives?! I don't think so..... Even AFTER we lost Devil May Cry, GTA, and any other game, we STILL have better exclusives. What about Uncharted, God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Little Big Planet? I mean if COD was xbox exclusive or Arkham Asylum or Assassin's Creed or GTA, then yeah I would agree. The expansion gets rid of the care packets and kill streaks. (I know it can't/won't...just saying) I am not whining, but I did rent this game 1st, and noticed some things. (The game is still fun though, I just won't get $62 bucks out of it.))

The camping is not an issue with me, as I love smashing campers. (LOL) However, the MP maps all appeal and support this type of gameplay. ON top of that, I felt much better about knowing what you needed for UAV, Air Strike, Chopper stuff....and feel like this new idea of streaks is "System Overload". (The same thing I think may hurt the PS3 game, MAG.) I didn't feel hype in the MW2 campaign (Like I did with the 1st one), so I didn't get far into it. It's good, but a lot of that stuff was rushed IMO, and uninspired. (Living off some "real world" stuff, and "No Russian" level was flat out pointless...clearly used get more money out of "desensitized" by sex, violence, and excuse making people.) I hope the expansion takes gamers to the feeling of COD4. (The sniper level was sweet!)

You're arguing over and defending A PIECE OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT. It doesn't have emotions you know; you're not making it happy by complimenting its exlusive titles. What I said earlier was in reference to the many people commenting who are trying to spin this piece of news in a negative manner. So the 360 will get this 'expansion' first - so what? You people are getting your knickers in a twist because of it, and it's a sad sight.

What you said in response to my comment, when you stated that 360 owners 'wanted to make this gen about exclusivity', what the heck are you talking about? You're making it sound as though this is some kind of civil war; like we're spilling blood as an act of defence of our 'beloved' console.

IT'S JUST A BLOODY VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. Get over yourself.

I bought an Xbox 360 because it was the only next generation console out at the time, and I stuck with it because I saw no reason not to. This isn't about allegiances; this is about growing up and realising that each console offers something different and that one is not necessarily better than the other.

So why don't you ditch the superiority complex and just accept that this MW2 expansion is coming to ALL next-gen consoles - that's what should be celebrated here.

Because they pay for exclusivity and it makes people think that just because they have an xbox, they are better. It was never like this before. I don't know why everyone started hating each other because of console preference.
Look....both systems are good in their own way. I own both like I said and they are both awesome in different ways.

As others have said, an early DLC for the 360 is not going to impact sales for either the 360 or the 360 version of MW2. More than likely, most 360 owners have already bought the game. This press release right after the holiday season makes no sense! The benefit for the cost MS paid just isn't there. PS3/360 owners aren't going to trade in their PS3 MW2 for the 360 version just for the DLC. Stupid MS. Of course Activision and IW are just as bad for taking the bait from MS.

I refuse to support a company that waves money in front of developers/publishers to produce DLC unique/early for their platform. MS is notorious for this....GTA IV, MW2, etc.

If you remember correctly the COD4 Map Pack was called an expansion too. It is possible that they expand on the sp though. Did anyone else notice that they names the sp story? Why do that unless you are going to have more than one. And this is nothing new. We all knew from E3 that MS was getting the DLC first. If I remember right its only for 2 weeks. Same thing was done with the DLC for COD4 and it didn't really matter.

I don't mind the 360 owners of this game becoming beta testers. I bought it for my PS3 but it isn't going to make me want to trade it in for the 360 version. Its obviously not aimed at the likes of me though.

Sony also know that their users are patient because we've had to wait long enough for most games anyway.

Why bother with any COD game made by Infinity ward on any system but the xbox 360? We all know they're so far up Microsoft's ass Bill Gates calls them enemas anyways.

I'd rather spend 60 bucks on toilet paper than to give a dime to Infinity Ward and COD 4 or COD 6 and I'm glad their games get pirated for the PC. They're a lousy company who hinge the games success on multiplayer and nothing but. They take the easy route every time they release a game and it's sickening. They offer up a 4 hour campaign and then let everyone migrate to the online boring multiplayer with the same boring deathmatches year in and out. F*CK them guys
