Dead Rising 2: Capcom what are you doing?

GB writes: "Zombie gorefest Dead Rising was the sole reason I bought an Xbox 360 all those years ago but I'm sad to say I'm feeling completely underwhelmed about the sequel. I was a big fan of George Romero's classic 1978 Dawn of the Dead movie so the idea of adopting the role of a survivor holed up in a shopping mall and fending off the zombie horde appealed somewhat. Now, a few years on, I can't help but feel that where the undead are concerned, the whole concept is suffering from overkill right now."

I am not sure, Dead Rising was an OK game, so I see no reason why this one should be a big one.

Godmars2905242d ago

Its gone from a comical zombie survival horror game to an extreme sports game, with zombies.

Anon19745242d ago

I had two major issues with Dead Rising. One was the timed missions. Generally, I hate timed missions. They're alright in moderation but I had no idea the entire game would be based off timed missions. And having multiple missions going at the same time that you couldn't complete didn't make me want to replay the game to try those other missions, it just made me not want to play the game.

My second problem was that horrible save system. When I need to save my game and quit, I need to save my game and quit, not slog through zombies for 20 minutes to get to a save point and then save my game. And the zombies didn't even have any real menace to them, I found. They were more of an irritant, a barrier and after the initial thrill of hitting one with a cash register wore off, fighting through waves of zombies was rather tedious.

I had Dead Rising pre-ordered, and I understand why lots of people found it entertaining, but it just wasn't my thing. I was really disappointed with the first game.

DEADRISING for me was more than just a OK game, it was on of my favorite games, its fresh, challenging and very well designed.

I dont understand why people hate save system! mabye its too hard for noobies.

Alcon Caper5242d ago

it was pretty fun. but the save system did make you push forward, unfortunately, it didn't have an unlimited free roaming mode, which would have been perfect (did it?)

oh well, I'm sure they'll fix these issues in the second one. Then it'll be amazing.

Anon19745242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

Hard had nothing to do with it. It was irritating. When my wife calls downstairs "Honey! The Henderson's are here for dinner!" I can't call back up and say "OK! Give me 10-20 minutes to save my game!" and I'm not going to leave my console on indefinitely. I can't even remember how many times I lost my progress simply because I had some other obligation and it was taking me too long to fight to the save points. Being a noob doesn't factor into it. I'm 35 and have been gaming all my life. There were no saves in my day. You always started from the beginning. This was just a step backward for me. Like I said, it wasn't hard, it was just irritatingly time consuming to implement a feature that videogames have had for 20 years now.

There's no excuse for that. It either wasn't thought through or they thought players wouldn't mind replaying the same missions for lack of a workable save system. Like I said before, I'm not knocking people who liked the game, there was a lot to like if those two items I mentioned weren't deal breakers for you. I'm just saying for me they were. I'm actually hoping that Dead Rising 2 fixes these issues for me and becomes the game that I was hoping the first one would be.

militant075242d ago

it uswally doesnt take more than 5min to reach nearest bathroom, and you could allways pause the game!,

if it had save option at anytime it would have been much easier.

Anon19745242d ago

I spent 20 minutes one time slogging through zombies to get to the save point, opened the door to the hallway to a save and the hallway was chalk full of more zombies! That was the point where I said "Screw it. I've got to go."
Yeah, I could have paused it, but sometimes I only have time to game a half hour every couple of days or so. I'm a busy man, and this game was just a waste of time for me when there were plenty of games I could jump into, get my gaming fix and jump back out.

Again, I'm not saying it's a bad game...I'm just saying it wasn't for me and I found this type of save mentality rather archaic. I tried multiple times to get into this game but I just couldn't do it. That and the "You completed a mission, but you FAIL because now you can't do 3 other missions" I felt wasn't rewarding to play.

Perjoss5242d ago

20 mins to get to the nearest bathroom, really? i don't think we played the same game.

ThanatosDMC5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

The first Dead Rising was the reason i got a 360. It was never meant to be a survival horror game though you do have to survive. I always wore the little kid clothes or the luchador outfit with a servebot head. I always have four battle axes with me a shotgun and the purple drinks.

But it was weird how he ran like he had some testicular problem. I mean, you can hold your camera while running but it shouldnt make you look like a freak.

Gotta love/hate it when you accidentally sledge hammer the skull of the people you gotta save. The cultist were memorable and also the military. This the only 360 exclusive i want on the PS3.

When I got my Xbox Dead Rising was probably the title I was most hyped about playing, but it ended up REALLY letting me down. What was up with that save system? And why is Frank always half hunched over? He looks like he needs to take a huge dump. The whole thing just reeked of suck, imo.

If they can fix the numerous glaring flaws with the original then I see no reason not to be excited for the new one. After all, zombies are just about the coolest thing ever, but I just don't know if they can pull it off.

GiantEnemyCrab5242d ago

The save system was just fine imo, the only people who complained about it were the ones who sucked at the game.. It created tension something lacking severaly in many Zombie games these days. You actually felt like you had something to lose..

The original is a classic and still one of the best zombie games this gen.

The author is spot on, this new one looks like multiplatform crap trying to please everyone and in the end pleasing no one. The dev's have no experience and are trying to shoehorn things like multiplayer in it and losing all the Japanese charm the original had and replacing it with loud obnoixous americana.

Polluted5242d ago

Well you can pretend like I didn't like the game because I sucked at it if you want. Some people just don't like slogging across the same environment for 20 minutes, killing the same zombies over and over again and sneaking through the same courtyard to avoid those guys in a hummer just to reach a save point.

"What's that? Not only is my dinner cold, but I don't have time to finish the mission I was on? So now the game is over? No problem, I'll just load up one of my other saves and...oh...damn."

Yeah, that was tonnes of fun. Of course none of that would have mattered had the game been fun. Face it, Dead Rising was shallow and boring.

GiantEnemyCrab5242d ago

There were several bathrooms you can save at and never once did I feel i couldn't get to a save point and had to replay unless I actually died or ran out of time getting to a mission.

I generalized a bit too much in my original statement, I should of said "MOST" of the save point complaints were because people just didn't get it.

Every section of the mall has a save point and in the example you give you should of just turned around and went to the bathroom to save before you attemtped to cross the courtyard.

For me, the save points and constant running timer added fun to the game and not frustration. I do see where you are coming from but I do not agree that it was boring.

Horny5242d ago

I didnt like the save sytem much either. It wasnt difficult it was just irritating if I had to do something I would have to leave my x box on or just lose all my progress. I havent finished the game because I didnt feel like replaying a mission again because I didnt have time to save it. I might try it again one of these days. The worst part is the long loading screens when u go to a different area trying to find a bathroom.
With that said it was a fun game that did have some flaws. I do look forward to playing part 2.

"and instead players take the role of the intriguingly named Chuck Greene, a biker type, who thankfully won’t be needing to stop every few minutes to take pictures to achieve experience points."

I believe most people enjoyed the camera.

I did. But it was mostly an optional thing too so it didn't get in the way of the game for people who wanted old fashioned zombie killing.

Other than that the author of this article has some good ideas at the end. It's about time we get a zombie game where we can barricade ourselves from the undead. Other games that feature that aren't as good as they should be.

Kakihara5242d ago

As a huge classic Romero and general old zombie flick fan Dead rising was the game that made me buy a 360 too (along with the stage demo of Assassin's creed but we'll forget about that for now, if not forever).

I enjoyed Dead rising but I really don't think Capcom are the right people to be making these kinds of games. Capcom make good fun flashy colourful games like Street fighter and whatnot. I was excited when I learned that they had handed the sequel over to Western developers but from videos I've seen the squel looks just as cartoony as Capcom esque as the first.

I'm still desperate for a good zombie game that perfectly captures the feel of the classic Romero movies. It really annoys me that zombies are already becoming overused but we still haven't seen a single game that got the classic zombie formula just right. Left 4 dead captured the feel okay but as we know wasn't really a zombie game in the classic sense.

An open world GTA meets Fallout style zombie game in a huge city overrun with the shambling dead would be the perfect thing for me. No monsters or wacky special powers or anything though. Just a game about making your way through a city infested with zombies, trying to find small groups of survivors and attempting to survive would be perfect. If they captured that classic Romero feel that is.

Want a great zombie game play Call of Duty: World at War... The Nazi Zombie mode is the best zombie killing one could ask for!

A Matter Of Trust: What The Game Industry Should Do To Win Gamers Back

Skewed and Reviewed have written an Opinion Piece covering issues in the gaming industry, how current issues were issues years ago, and what can be done to help restore consumer trust.

anast4d ago

Nothing. It's up to the gamers to stop consuming content from companies that they don't agree with.

Garethvk3d ago

How do you know if you agree with it or not unless you play it? Which without conventions forces gamers to rely on trailers. Perhaps Demos should be made more frequently. But companies need to do better as well.

anast3d ago

Wait until release. Watch Gameplay. Exercise patience.

Garethvk3d ago

But is that not what they have now? Tons of gameplay or are you talking about watching actual gamers play it versus the trailers and streams? The big issue is that some companies pay streamers and influencers and they create content but for me; that is hardly a fair, unbiased, and factual look at a game.

1nsomniac3d ago

Get rid of the suits in the industry and job done!!

Garethvk3d ago

They usually are attached to the money sadly. It would be nice to have gamers in charge but you have so much money invested that business people are needed. Hence the issue; you need people who know business but are also gamers who know have an eye to the community. It sounds simple in theory that if you give gamers quality games that they want to play; money will be made. But that is not always so.
