Sony Proves to be 3D's Biggest Supporter

PlayStation LifeStyle discusses in detail how Sony plans on bringing 3D technology into homes across the globe via television, broadcasting networks, even the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Network.

Could be massive for Sony, if they cemented themselves at the forefront of all things 3D it could be the company's next big break

Sev5227d ago

Agreed, they have all their grounds covered as well. They have the format to carry it on with Blu-Ray, they have Bravia HDTVs to display it, they have PS3 for the gaming aspect.

Plus producing the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D will raise awareness 10-fold.

Teaming up with Imax and Discovery for a new all 3D channel was a genius move as well.

doctorstrange5227d ago

People really associate Imax with 3D so its good for Sony to affiliate with them, as well as spreading some of the costs of the channel and so the liability. Also, Imax will bring a lot of expertise, that'll help Sony.

cmrbe5226d ago

to people than HD did because it will change how people watch movies. Seeing Avatar in 3d has convinced me to buy a 3d set when it comes out. 3d has come a long way and i think its mature enough now.

The two areas Sony should really focus on is gaming and movies imo. Not so much TV as not all TV shows will be great for 3d.

Sony are thinking big and are making a huge investment in the future of home entertainment.I am glad they are the ones really pushing 3d forward

bacon135226d ago (Edited 5226d ago )

Sony will definitely be the torch bearer when this technology is slated to enter our homes. Just start saving now though, 1st generation 3D TVs will be very expensive and needs to properly integrate NO GLASSES technology to earn my money. The tech exists, but like I said it is uber expensive at the moment and will be for some time.

darthv725226d ago

that will be epic as many people who need to wear contacts or glasses have issues with films shown in imax. This could revolutionize watching tv like color did. There really hasnt been a big event in the history of tv since color. HD was simply evolutionary but 3d will be revolutionary.

RealityCheck5226d ago

I wish them luck but I think the technology they are pushing has too many drawbacks. On top of having to re-buy an HDTV, having to buy many pairs of expensive and delicate glasses (that kids can easily break), having to keep those glasses charged and of course having the discomfort of wearing them, isn't worth the 3D pop out effect. I agree with the posters above that a solution with no glasses would fare better. At the very least, the solution with the cheap\light\non-powered glasses that people are used to with IMAX and 3D theaters would have had a chance to make it to the mainstream.

I feel that asking people to charge and put on these shutter glasses to watch TV and play games is like asking people to buy cellphones or laptops that have no battery and must be constantly plugged in, it's almost a step backward.

edgeofblade5226d ago (Edited 5226d ago )

*facepalm*

It's embarrassing to see Sony and most of the industry put so many eggs in the 3D basket. This is not going to work as well as everyone seems to think. You have to sell everyone on wearing battery powered shutter glasses all over again. I hate to be the wet blanket in your bed, but 3D is not worth the trouble.

No, not even for gamers. Really! It's certainly cool... but that's it. After that, you are still playing the same rehashed, reskinned content we have been playing last decade. I know there is a common idea that "3D is the only place games have to go from here." What a cynical, short-sighted idea.

Leave 3D in the movies... in fact, leave it in fewer movies and focus on making a good movie without all the gimmicks. Pretty please...

You want to know where games can go from here? More augmented reality. More head tracking.

DaTruth5226d ago

For all the people who said; "How iz teh PS3 3D, different from 360 with Avatar game".

"Sony have gone on the record saying that a firmware update could bring the experience to all upcoming and existing PS3 titles."

I know, for some reason, you guys think there is nothing PS3 can do that 360 can't do; Whether that is true or not, MS has no plan for bringing it to you!

sikbeta5226d ago

This is just Great news, Sony can do it because have a lot of products to cater every kind of need in Electronics

·Professional 3D Cameras (for movies)
·3D Broadcasting
·Bravia, Main leader of 3D HDTV
·3D Digital Cinema Projection System
·3D Gaming

evrfighter5226d ago

3d gaming has been available for many years now.

But If it doesn't give me an advantage then it's just an option.

that's how pc gamers think and why it's never took off

edhe5226d ago

Sony have a vested interest in 3D tech as they want you to part with another thousand quid in order to buy their product, preferably proprietary.

Their Telly sales are down and their consoles aren't dominating the market like they used to.

DaTruth5226d ago

Strange that PS3 works with all kinds of non-proprietary peripherals! Clearly Sony doesn't care about that like MS and their proprietary everything only!

darthv725226d ago (Edited 5226d ago )

Check out this site: http://www.next3d.com

They offer a player that works with 360 and ps3. You need a tv that supports 3d. Not sure what this offers different from what sony will do via fw update.

I recall signing up for their beta program. I have an hdmi 360 and ps3 and a 3d ready tv. Sadly they didnt pick me as a participant.

cyberwaffles5226d ago

i'm not really feeling for this 3D direction Sony is going for just like i was with Nintendo's motion controllers. hope i may like it, but at the same time i wouldn't invest in such technologies unless Sony were sure it would be successful.

edhe5226d ago

Oh please do I even have to argue it? Can't i just believe that you all actually know what Sony likes to do with formats?

Not talking about ps3 here.

*sigh.

rockleex5226d ago

They haven't even made any 3D cinemas without glasses... to my knowledge.

DoucheVader5227d ago

Sony is in the unique position to actually deliver this technology. Being a consumer electronics giant as well as a massive content house is a sure fire way to propel 3D into homes across the globe.

doctorstrange5226d ago

As long as Sony works in collaboration with itself and actually utilises all the assets they have at their disposal, they are in a prime position to grab a considerable share of the 3D market

edgeofblade5226d ago

I'm not kidding. Really. 3D is not worth the hassle. But don't let that stop Sony from sinking tons of cash chasing a feature no one really wants.

Really. I just said "no one wants 3D". It's easy to assume everyone wants it because of movies like Avatar. But how much of your time do you want to spend with shutter glasses on?

Anyone else get the feeling we are about to see a sharp rise in the number of undocumented epileptic cases?

DaTruth5226d ago (Edited 5226d ago )

Did it ever occur to you that they might plan on producing another method of 3D. You act like there are none. My step son came home with 3D glasses from the theater(UP) that are so cheap, they let them take them home as a souvenir. And they weren't shutter or red and blue's(because I can't remember the name of the tech now).

There are 3D sets that require no glasses at all. I wont be purchasing one, as I've heard they are very expensive, but HDTV's no where near as high tech as my current Bravia use to be $60,000!

HyperBear5226d ago

While I am with you on the whole 3D thing, as I believe it is pretty useless and a waste of time for everyone for gaming, watching tv, etc. (except for movies). I'll have to disagree that 3D will catch on, and people will invest into it.

Me, I will not invest into it yet, because I do not have the money to be shelling out for everything 3D (I just shelled out money to get a 40" 120Hz 1080p HDTV and now all of a sudden, everyone is talking about 3D). But give it 2-3 years and when the technology advances and HDMI 1.4 becomes a standard and more cable channels are in 3D and everything goes right, then I will invest. Only reason why I upgraded my HDTV, was because HD was and still is a success and is now mainstreamed enough for everyone to own, and everyone has now adopted HD and Blu-Ray and HD channels, and HD gaming.

It will take some time for people to adjust to 3D, and I think Sony is a little overboard, saying that in 2012, 50% of tvs sold will be by them or in 3D. Im sorry, that will not happen, unless only 10 TVs are sold in 2012 and 5 of them are 3D.

I just cannot for the life of me see this 3D stuff come together and be successful. Movies is where its good at and its where it should stay. You know how long it took to get HD mainstreamed, about 5-6 years, and some people still dont have HDTVs or HD anything. Initally the cost will be the issue, but as seen with HDTVs and Blu-ray Players, the more time goes on and the technology becomes cheaper, the cheaper the products get.

I will admit I am a technological nerd. I have technology all around me and it takes my paychecks every week from the amount I spend every month upgrading TVs, Laptops, etc. But this is one thing I will not become and early adopter of and I would rather wait and see where it is in 3 years from launch (basically by 2012/2013 Ill invest in a new tv). Whether I like it or not, which as you can tell, Im not a fan of 3D....It will become something, and it will become more than just a pair of glasses.

ArmrdChaos5226d ago

Someone better find out what consistent and prolonged use of 3D glasses do to the human eyes. Up to this point 3D use has been limited to the length of an occasional movie. They already blame video games for just about everything...should this have a negative impact then the lawyers will have a feeding frenzy.

Lifewish5226d ago

As long as Sony supports it and continues to do so this could be very big

JonnyBigBoss5226d ago

I still need to see Avatar in 3D. I can't imagine how it looks to game in 3D. I bet it's a blast, and I can see it catching on once the availability goes up.

doctorstrange5226d ago

I got the chance to play it in 3D, makes a boring game fun

cmrbe5226d ago

Its like nothing you have seen before. Its like you are not watching from a flat screen instead you are watching from a window into real life.

Cameron has out done himself tech wise with what he brought in T2 and the Abyss before that.

3d is the future of cinema and movies at least. That is certain.

Sevir045226d ago

a simple tech demo they did just before they were about to release the game. needless to say< i'm stoked, Games like Dead Space, Gears of War, GT, and Uncharted are uberly immersive and very pretty in 3-d. 3d has come along way and it's great to see sony really push this thing forward, because it's going to be the next big thing for Home TV and Home Gaming on a Massive level, their are so many partners already supporting this with the first set of Bluray-3ds coming out all ready.
whats more, Every Bluray 3-d comes with 3d glasses, as well as the 3d-HDTVs so the chances of you owning multiples for the family is going to be high. the only thing is that early technology like this will be expensive in the first second and 3rd generation iteration, and they wont be fully liquidated to mass market prices till 4th gen which will probably be in year 3 on the market.

See blu ray progression, and it'll also take a major film and massive marketing and publishing to bring the message home, much like how the Matrix did for DVD and the Dark Knight did for Bluray.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro50d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7250d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_50d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga50d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2350d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200050d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin50d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole50d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix50d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198950d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

PlayStation 3: chasing the 1080p dream, part three - Gran Turismo 5 and the indie explosion

From Digital Foundry: "Welcome to the third part in the biggest DF Retro episode we've ever produced - a year-by-year look at how 1080p gaming fared on the PlayStation 3. Launched in 2007 touting its then-exclusive HDMI digital interface, Sony layered full HD gaming on top of its Cell processor and RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' as key selling points for its third generation console. Of course, we all know how that turned out - both Sony and Microsoft machines routinely ran the most advanced titles at sub-720p resolutions, often with questionable performance, so what happened to the 1080p dream?

In the first two parts of John Linneman's investigation, we've covered off the first four years of the Triple's lifecycle and moving into 2010, the overall fortunes of the PlayStation 3 continued to improve. The platform holder released - what was then - the most advanced motion controller in the console space, backed up by experiments with stereoscopic 3D, which turned out to be a short-lived but still formidable pairing. Combined with a strong E3 showing, PS3 was looking good.

However, it's fair to say that it was a fallow year for 1080p gaming on the system, with only Scott Pilgrim Saves The World's razor-sharp pixel art upscaling, Castle Crashers and Soldner X2's 3D/FMV stylings accommodating full HD output - alongside a wonderful Monkey Island remaster."

ApocalypseShadow642d ago (Edited 642d ago )

Just remember ladies and gentlemen, Sony never said all games would be 1080p. Only that the system would support games up to 1080p in a survey before the system was released.
https://spong.com/article/9...
And as we saw, some games did support it, some games tried their best to support it and some games didn't or never reached it.

Is a higher resolution great to have if you can do it? Sure. Is it necessary for a fun game? No

But what I find interesting is Eurogamer. Are they really talking about HD and PS3 in their article or are they really pushing their 4.50 Euros 4K video download subscription? Seems one is being used to sell the other. Just look at the bottom of the article.

Michiel1989642d ago

thats what every company tries to do, push for people to buy their products. Are you really gonna blame them for that?

ApocalypseShadow642d ago

Not all articles are about selling. They're about informing or entertaining.

Maybe I'm supposed to watch the video instead of reading. But I shouldn't have to click. But the article lazily tells us some games did hit 1080p and some didn't. I didn't learn anything new as I own the console. Then, they push a Patreon subscription.

Are you saying every opinion, preview, review and rant article requires a push to buy something now? Tell me which sites are prone to do so so that I can avoid them in the future.

Michiel1989642d ago

not everyone played during the ps3 era. I started during snes era but loved seeing articles/videos about how gaming evolved before that.

i dont think this article is trying to push you to get that patreon sub, it doesnt for me at least. I dont think theres anything wrong putting an ad at the bottom of the article. all the regular DF videos are free already.

SonyStyled642d ago

Wipeout HD on PS3, a remake of the PS1 game was 1080p 60fps. And that released in 2007-08

Christopher642d ago

This really feels like a filler article. I don't feel like I learned anything notable or substantial from this. I feel they could have reduced the unnecessary intro and over-explanation of things and put the whole series in one article for a more substantial and possibly informative piece rather than piece-mealing it out as they have.

dumahim642d ago

It's more about the video. DF Retro videos are for Patreon members first, and I think the whole thing was one big video. For the youtube channel, it gets chopped up and released weekly.

ApocalypseShadow642d ago

Chris is actually right on this one. Something known already was just kind of washed over in the article. Unless you're supposed to get more in the video. If more is in the video, then more could have been said in the article.

Only thing I learned new was that they are selling a subscription. My point though is that you gain more viewers by having better articles and content.

Revisiting PS3 classic Motorstorm - The driving celebration that should never have ended

Digital Foundry : Evolution Studios' Motorstorm is one of the first, finest and most fondly remembered of launch titles for PlayStation 3. It's a release designed to answer the question posed by each new console generation: what makes a game 'next-gen'? With its robust physics engine and massive tracks, Motorstorm serves up a bold affirmative answer to this question, delivering an experience that could never have existed on prior console hardware. At the same time, the path to release was fraught with challenges that almost serve as a microcosm of the PlayStation 3 release situation itself. It was a success, however, with a trilogy of PS3 releases, plus PSP, Vita and even PS2 off-shoots.

After Driveclub and Onrush, the dev team will now contribute to and assist with the development of the upcoming NFS.

darthv72708d ago

I would give anything to have a full compilation of the series remastered to play on PS5 with full DS support. Feeling the deformation of the tracks as you race in pacific rift or the snow laden tracks in arctic edge... that would be sweet.

MastaMold708d ago (Edited 708d ago )

Yes MotorStorm World Tour for PS5 damn it Sony make it. The Desert, Pacific Islands, The Arctic and City races.

Army_of_Darkness708d ago

Motorstorm Pacific rift was awesome! I think MotorStorm: Apocalypse was what killed the franchise due to its change of direction...

darthv72708d ago

Pacific rift is the best (IMO) but apocalypse wasnt what killed it. At least it was still somewhat of a MS game. The RC one is really a departure from the norm. None of which were bad as they were all fun in their own ways.

Army_of_Darkness708d ago

Lol! I completely forgot about the RC version.

Knushwood Butt708d ago (Edited 708d ago )

RC was a blast to play on Vita.

Apocalypse had unfortunate timing due to the 3/11 earthquake in Japan. I never got around to playing that one.

Evolution had some harsh experiences. I had Driveclub from launch and the server issues weren't that bad and certainly didn't prevent you from enjoying the game.

ABizzel1708d ago

Agree Apocalypse didn't kill it, it's just racing games in general just became less popular nearing the end of the PS360 generation as it was flooded with medicore racers and the extremely niche but enjoyable ones like Motorstorm, Blur, Spilt Second, and Forza Horizon (still going strong, but actual sales have been decent fro a racer, and often expanded by console bundles and now GamePass)

But since the PS4/XBO generation had a lack of arcade racers, it's a prime time for games like this to come back.

I've said for the longest, the additional income of PS+ Premium should be used for, Remastering, Remaking, or recreating sequels / spinoffs of classic PS franchises to launch into the service. Many PS3 games fit this mold of looking good enough that a quick remaster to 4K@60 with better texture maps would give them near PS4 quality.

Remasters: A game like Motorstorm look good enough where it can simply be remastered in 4K @ 60fps, and have better textures for mud, mountains/rock structures, and vehicles and it would hold up WELL.

Remakes: Games like Legend of Dragoon, Warhawk (could be a simple remaster also), and so many others could get remakes like FF7.

Recreates: Shorter sequels/prequels/spin-offs to other classic PS IPs like how Infamous First Light / Blood Festival (BF was a highly underrated vampire game) and Uncharted Lost Legacy. Give spin-offs to things like Heavenly Sword, The Order 1886 (1786 or 1986), Puppeteer, Tokyo Jungle, and more.

ABizzel1708d ago (Edited 708d ago )

This is also why Sone NEEDS to get PS3 emulation up and running. It gets rid of all the PS3 server farms and replaces it with software that can work on EVERY future PS console with updated coding.

At bare minimum emulation could double the resolution and framerates of all PS3 games making many of them 1440p@60fps without any real work, and a few 4k@60fps.

As for full-on remakes again updating to 4K@60fps with completely revamped textures, and an option for 1440p@60fps with global illumination can make these games shine with a new lease on life.

Also I'm still waiting on my DriveClub 1440p@60fps update 😭

ChiefofLoliPolice707d ago

Apocalypse was actually pretty good i don't think that's what killed the series. PR was the best though.

akurtz708d ago

Only driving game i enjoyed.

darkrider708d ago

Really cool franchise. It's shame it ended

RosweeSon708d ago

Never really got into it myself I remember getting it with ps3 and being a bit underwhelmed I preferred the RC version they did for vita 🙌🏻🤣

EvertonFC708d ago

Going from ps2 to ps3 was not underwhelming when I first played motorstorm, it was like nothing we'd ever seen before ?

RosweeSon708d ago (Edited 708d ago )

Each to their own didn’t like it myself. 🤷🏻‍♂️✌🏻 ;I didn’t say going from ps2/3 was underwhelming just the launch game motorstorm, bit different but hey ho.

PS3 was a slow burner for me it’s my least favourite Sony console, maybe as I had my 360 as my main at that point but yeah wasn’t impressed with first couple of years to be honest but that’s just me. Once uncharted MGS4 GT5 Last of us GTA4/5 dropped sure but launch games weren’t all that imo. Resistance was alright wasn’t as big a change as ps4 or even now ps5 for me. PS3 took out rumble and basically went HD it’s wasn’t exactly a revolutionary start. 🤷🏻‍♂️✌🏻 ;
