GameInformer Review: Darksiders

It's not that playing as a horseman of the apocalypse (the sword-wielding War) is an empowering experience (he gnashes his teeth, communicates almost solely through threats, yet ends up being a transparent "who needs backstory?" guide through the end of days). Darksiders' allure comes from the homage it pays to Zelda and God of War. Upstart developer Vigil Games does nothing to disguise the fact that both aforementioned games are channeled to the fullest extent.

i personally don'tthink it's that odd , it just clash with some people's assumption that Zelda 64's gameplay should only apply to zelda/cute looking games .

GoW admittely got some concept and gameplay features from Zelda . And if Jaffe was still onboard and had his way , the serie would have kept including even more concepts from ocarina of time and Mask of majora .

And if you like JRPGs (I'm a junkie for the genre), the PS3 is where it's at next year.

That said, I have both systems, and the software forecast is looking amazing for both consoles next year.

360:

- Alan Awake
- Crackdown 2

PS3:
- Star Ocean International (sorry, but the 360 version didn't even stretch to fill my 50" Samsung, and was a bit of an abortion).
- GOW 3
- Heavy Rain (this game looks to offer a really unique experience, you should check it out if you're a new PS3 owner)
- The Last Guardian
- Bunch of JRPGs

And for multi-plats, pretty much just Darksiders, Final Fantasy XIII, Dead Space 2 and maybe Bioshock 2, if it doesn't appear to suck. Too many other games vying for my time and cash in 2010.

I don't think this reviewer fully understands the marriage between borrowed gameplay elements. It's in taking these memorable machinations and applying them to their own script with more complex puzzles, that the game does make it own imprint... I think the IGN and AusGamers reviews said it better

Damnit all to hell why does 2010 have to have so many freaking good games? My name is Budg3tg4m3r for crying out loud I can't afford all this. They need a gamer welfare, instead of food stamps I get gamer stamps. There are like 5 games on the 360 I want to play and 3 on the PS3, and thats not counting the 6 or 7 multiplatform games I want. Going to have to get a 2nd freaking job or sell some kids on the black market... I heard Brad and Angelina are buying.

the game got a second opinion from gameinformer and they gave it 7.75
if you ask me,you shouldn't put this game as your first priority.with many great games coming this year and most of them are expected to have higher praises and rates,I think you should put this game in the "the second list" of games,the list of games which you buy after you buy the better games and you still have money to buy new games but you want to make sure.now I'm waiting for other reviews to make sure of this game.

I find it funny when reviewers complain or call out comparisons to other games like it's a bad thing. Darksiders is looking to be an excellent game and i'm getting really excited to play it. I'll definitely be buying it next week. Mixing in elements of GOW & Zelda sounds like a damn good time.

Also, why is it so wrong to take inspiration from other games? Zelda and GOW are at the top of their respective genres. I'd much rather have a developer use a gameplay style that is tried and true while mixing in their own ideas and thats what exactly darksiders looks to be doing. Darkcloud for the ps2 is an example of a game that wanted to be like zelda but should have followed the gameplay style better, why will i die unless i drink water every 5 minutes...? That kind of gameplay mechanic ruined the game for me.
