2010: Game of the year goes to...

GB writes: "2009 was a great year for gaming and we already have our own people choice for the Game of the Year running. There are hardly a few days remaining for 2009 and 2010 will be upon us in no time. I know it's very early to predict what will be the Game of the Year for 2010, But here are eight very strong candidates that may be crowned Game of the Year in 2010."

Do people really think both companies have shown all their major cards that people have started predicting 2010's GOTY from now!!!!

I personally feel the nominations will go to GOW3, Halo, TLG and probably multi-plats like Bioshock 2, FF13/ME2, Fallout Vegas.... But who knows if games like Agent or any other gets announced... Or it might be a surprise pack all together.

You know, if Heavy Rain gets critically acclaimed, then I feel most of the awards will go to HR for making a new genre (just like LBP)... It's a make it or break it game... It will either be in the high 90s or will be in the low 80s or even 70s.... All depends on how to media receive this game. If it's an experience like Indigo Prophecy, then I am really looking forward to it. Can't wait for the usual 7 from Edge for only being a QTE game.

Strange_Evil5245d ago

Usually most GOTY awards must go to games that push the boundaries in terms of art, style and introducing new genres. GOW3 and Halo have a place fixed without even trying cause of their past, but I personally feel it will be Heavy Rain, TLG or a RPG (ME2/FFXIII/Fallout).

Heavy Rain is looking solid and I loved Indigo Prophecy. Out of all the games I want HR to succeed the most as I feel most gamers will give the title a miss. we need more devs risking their necks.

TLG is another game to watch out for next year. If it's anything like SOTC, then trust me even GOW3 might lose it's charm in front of this. But my gut tells me it will be pushed in 2011.

Nothing can be predicted before at least GDC10 cause I am sure more games will come in the limelight. From Sony, KZ3 (doubt in 2010), R3 (quiet sure will land in 10) and from MS Gears (again sure it won't land in 10 due to Halo clashing). One things for sure, next year is gonna be a hell of a ride.

Saaking5245d ago

It's a bit to early, but I think the GOTY next year is gonna be either GOWIII, AGENT, or TLG (if it comes out).

Bungie5245d ago

it's very hard to choose

but i think it's between Halo Reach and Mass Effect 2

MerkinMax5245d ago

Regardless of which console you own there will plenty of great games for everyone to play.

mrv3215245d ago

Ah, your reasoning being?

I believe you are ignoring quite a few titles just to come up with Halo: Reach and Mass Effect 2... You know like

TLG
Heavy Raid
God of War 3
Gran Turismo 5
Medal of Honour
Special Ops
Splinter Cell

You are allowed you opinions but for me Halo: Reach thus far isn't a day one buy for me.

BadboyCivic3605245d ago

for 2010 there will be several different outlets giving out GOTY awards...i believe GOW3,Reach,ME2 and FF13 receiving awards...

Christopher5245d ago (Edited 5245d ago )

GOTY is rarely from a title that isn't released in the last 4 months of the year. That mass majority of those, especially the 9/10 options, won't likely even be considered for GotY next year.

Udidntlistenpunk5244d ago

So what did MS managed to bring in mid 2008 and mid 2009 then?

Banjo Kazooie?
Avatar racing?

No sir, MS did indeed showed all its cards. And they never have many cards to begin with. When you have that little 1st party studio's, thats a given.

mal_tez925244d ago

The first and second game didn't impress me and the demo for GOW3 failed to do so as well.

The problem lies in the repetitive gameplay. Every time I encounter a group of enemies, I can just hold L1 and keep mashing Square and Triangle to win, making every fight the same. I really do not understand how people can have fun by doing the exact same thing over and over again.

Some games have repetitive missions, but I would rather repetitive missions than repetitive gameplay.

UltimaEnder5244d ago

How f'in stupid is this, seriously N4G?

LethalToxins5244d ago

Outside of the boss fights (and water) in Ninja Gaiden, you can get by the entire game spamming Izuna Drop over and over again on hard. Odd that a game praised for it's difficulty can be played with basically one move. <.< Still love the game, just sayin'.

Most all games are, or can be made repetitious. Racing games are repetitious, all fighting games, shooters, etc. Doing the same thing over and over again is what games are made of. Especially if there's a certain something that's found to be more effective than the rest. It's a matter of how the repetition is masked to make it seem like it's not there.

Blackfrican5244d ago

The fact that you guys already are nominating games for GOTY 2010 when these games have been neither released nor played just goes to show how big of a joke most of you are.

Erotic Sheep5244d ago

Guys didn't we learn something from this years GOTY? All the games released in the first half of the year didn't get a single GOTY nominee. So my guess is, only games released in the second half of the year have a chance ;__;

Coffin875244d ago

This article is complete crap, just as I and probably everyone reading the headline thought.

God of War 3 probability 9/10, good so far.
Mass Effect 2, 9/10 also OK.

But The Last Guardian .. seriously.. Ico - GotY. SotC - GotY. I think this game is probably the best candidate, along with GoW3.

Bioshock 2, could be, but highly unlikely. I really don't see any chance of it being as groundbraking as the first one. How could it? In the first one, it was new - now, it isn't anymore.

Dead Space 2.. see above.

All in all it was a waste of time to read this list. I hope the author gets hit in the face by a stranger or something.

Traveler5244d ago (Edited 5244d ago )

Going purely off expectation I think Mass Effect 2 has my vote. Bioware never lets me down. Either that or The Last Guardian. Both of Team Ico's previous games were amazing, so I think this one will be too. But it's kind of absurd when you get right down to it. These games haven't even been released!

Why o why5245d ago (Edited 5245d ago )

but i think it'll be on the ps3 whether its multi or exclusive

callahan095245d ago

We're really going to talk about Game of the Year 2010 already? Ridiculous. We don't even know what any of the end-of-year games are going to be, yet, and it's usually an end-of-year game that nabs the prize, so we can't really talk about GOTY yet.

N4PS3G5245d ago

that list is full of FAIL!!

GT5 - 6/10 ?
HALO REACH - 7/10 ?
Last Guardian - 6/10?
Dead Space 2 - 6/10 ?

LOL

Darkeyes5245d ago

Thats the probability of the game winning GOTY and not the expected/predicted score of the game......

EA Shoots Down Dead Space 2 Remake Rumors: 'No Validity to This Story'

EA has shut down rumors that EA Motive considered a Dead Space 2 remake before shelving it due to low sales of the previous game, saying there's "no validity" to the reports.

XiNatsuDragnel18d ago

Sure.... right.... at least remake dead space 3 w/o microtransactions bs.

XiNatsuDragnel17d ago

I sometimes I wished I didn't Ngl lol

Knightofelemia18d ago

Why not remake DS2 whether shot down or not it's still my favorite game next to DS1. As much as I hate EA I would buy or would have bought DS2 day one.

MeteorPanda18d ago

No validity XD "Guys guys, we cant possible make a good game or cater to the gamers wants, stop"

Yi-Long18d ago

I don't know if sales met their expectations or not. I just know that the high review scores received my attention so I was interested in buying it, but its price stayed high (50+ bucks) for so long that I simply never bothered picking it up.

Tacoboto17d ago

Doesn't pay full price
Doesn't pay *any* price
Ponders if sales met expectations regarding an allegedly canceled sequel.

Gee...

Yi-Long17d ago

Well, for starters, I'm sure there are plenty of games I never bought which did, somehow, still, meet their sales-expectations.

Concerning Dead Space; I never played and thus cared for the original. It's in multiple genres (shooter, sci-fi, horror) I don't particularly care about so it was barely on my radar pre-launch. I was never its target-audience.

When reviews hit, and it was scoring big, it gathered my interest, so while it wasn't in my field of interest, it mrans that I wanted to give it a fair shot and at least give it a try, as I do with many games across different genres; I tend to just cherry-pick the good stuff and see if it's for me or not.

But, I do wait for sales on those games I take a risk on.

Kornholic17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Lol, you are a huge part of the problem. If a very high-quality game is not even worth 50 bucks to you, then what is?

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave23d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan23d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
