Dragon Age: Origins – Gay Elf Hunt

For what it's worth, Dragon Age: Origins claimed the RPG of the year award from Spike TV's yearly gaming award show but the game is getting attention for more than just storytelling and loot gathering. Public figures and other talking heads are weighing in with their opinions on a minute long cut-scene which portrays the main character having a gay experience.

That's what I say, it's a perfectly fine game and the gay scenes are well told with the games story. People need to stop causing Chaos over something stupidly ridiculous such as this. The thing is we do, networks like Fox and other channels make a big deal out of it just for the ratings.

Actually, I think it was CNN or Fox35, can't remember, but I did see a segment on a news station a few weeks back talking about how Dragon Age is "unsafe for kids" because it has gay, graphics sex. Seriously, I don't even think they play the games. And do they not see the giant "M" on the box?

There's an episode where Thirteen has a sex scene with another woman. Fox didn't say boo to that.

I guess the reason why they're complaining is because once again, games are being treated as being for kids. We from the gamer's perspective realize that there are games that are for kids, and then there are games which are not for kids, at least not intended for them. DA:O is a M-rated title. It's not as if Fox runs commentary on the porn section of the local video store.

I'm not saying homosexuality should be kept away from children, either, just in case someone gets offended. I have no problem with anything, so don't attack me.

Umm can someone clarify this for me. In the game, don't you have to do a series of actions to get to the point of sleeping with a man, I hear you can do bushes or animals etc.? If that is true wouldn't the person playing the game be doing this consciencly either to get a good laugh and test the limits of the game or bc it is their preferance? I mean wouldn't you know you are picking actions to intentionally end up sleeping with a man, or is it like an oops 'i didn't know if I did that I would sleep with the dude'?

Correct me if I am wrong, but they didn't give you the option to have "sex". They give you the option to invite the elf to your room or something, which in itself gives you hints as to what will happen next. But most people do not expect a gay sex scene would cut in.

It’s not like Dragon Age is forcing you to have sex at all. It’s all about the players’ decision. So they are going to do it because they care about the character or they want the Achievement/Trophy.

Plus, the game is rated M anyway! So the retailers are bound by law to tell them about the mature rating and check IDs for people who look under 40 years of age.

1. In case the author of the article hadn't noticed it there is absolutely no shortage of homophobia on this side of the proverbial gaming fence. He seems to on at length about the people who might have a problem with optional gay content being pundits without ever seeming to acknowledge that the problem is as bad or worse among people who actually play games. We've had a number of articles just on N4G recently concerning this problem.

2. Now putting the issues raised in part one aside for a moment there are always going to be people out there disapproving of what you do because they don't like it. Whether it's music, or a style of dress, or pen/paper role playing, internet chatting, or game playing. Whatever it is you enjoy, I promise you there's always going to be somebody out there that has to stand up and yell about why you shouldn't be able to enjoy it. The article correctly takes aim at the group of screamers that have a problem with even a hint of homosexuality but I assure you even if it lacked sexual content Dragon Age is violent enough to make entirely different groups of people whine so don't pretend such groups are unique simply because they're more uncommon.

3. Zevran is an interesting character. In fact, all of the characters in Dragon Age are interesting except the one you create. If Bioware did one thing right in that game it was the depth of personality they put in to each and every character to the point that they did a commendable job making them seem like real people and as with real people one aspect of who they are is going to be sexual orientation. Are people so insecure about their sexual orientation that they're afraid they're going to catch teh gay if a realistic but fictional character in a video game tries to flirt with their same gender character?

So the game doesn't discriminate, whoopty do the people complaining need to look at the rating it says *mature*. They need not worry about stuff that doesn't effect them. It'd be one thing if it was manditory at school but for the love of all that's holy it's a darn game that people can choose to play their own way.

games not even good, game plays laggy as if the framerate is low, combat sucks. no free roam. games a flop not nearly as good as other bioware games
