How Zelda Ruined The Wii

Suggesting that one of the most beloved franchises of all time could ruin anything outside of itself is a tough call to make. Did Sonic ruin the Dreamcast? Obviously not. Really, how could the Wii be ruined? It's still the best selling game console, and almost every title Nintendo puts out is a best seller. It owns a majority of the "gaming" market by a pretty significant margin. So whats the issue? 3rd Party Core publishers, the ones that make the games we care about, are afraid to produce things for the Wii.

This article, for lack of a better term...is horrible.

The only thing i agree with him on is that, yes, some people are holding on to their wii for the next zelda.

Zelda is not the reason for 3rd parties trying to make "core" games.

The reason for 3rd parties making "core" games is the fact that not everyone wants to make casual or licensed crap. Not to mention, lots of new studios are getting a chance with the wii because of the huge install base and cheaper production costs.

How Wii ruined Zelda would be a more fitting title.

Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time were definately legendary.

Wii will put a huge dent in the Zelda franchise.

ChickeyCantor5256d ago

@evr,

The fact you can't establish what it would have been if it were made on a console like the PS3/360 makes your statement just ridiculous.
You can claim it would have been much more, but wtf do you know? It all comes down to DESIGN. As a matter of fact its even possible for Nintendo to make a sh/tty zelda game if it were made for a console with higher specs.

Higher specs =/= better.

In your point where you claim OOT is legendary, do you even realize you are talking about a game that is 2 generations old, yet you are worried about a Zelda title on the Wii?

Are you on drugs? seriously.

Mista T5256d ago

I agree, the wii just has nothing going for it in terms of games

hobokiller5256d ago

Zelda didn't "ruin" anything.

multipayer5256d ago

Zelda + Physics, lighting, improved AI, 1080p.. Which would mean there is more things on the screen for your wii cursor to interact with the higher resolution, those things would have physics, and improved AI from those around you watching.

Wii did ruin what could of been, but at least we got Oblivion and Fable... I guess....

PS3Freak5256d ago

The wii really lacks in games right now. I havn't played mine since wii sports resort came out, save for the occasional Brawl/Kart race.

All they need to do is release a new star fox and i'd be happy for a while.

SpoonyRedMage5256d ago

You know apart from the 1080P the Wii can do all that. Look at FF:CC: Crystal Bearers. It's very, very interactive(very few, if any, PS3/360 games are as interactive), it has a physics engine, in fact I think it's Havok which is what most PS3/360 games use and it has pretty advanced AI, in fact the AI is very similar to Fable.

This video shows it all off actually:

ChickeyCantor5256d ago (Edited 5256d ago )

" Zelda + Physics, lighting, improved AI, 1080p.. Which would mean there is more things on the screen for your wii cursor to interact with the higher resolution, those things would have physics, and improved AI from those around you watching. "

You are assuming things they might not even do.
Wii seems to handle nice physics anyway, hell even GCN did it nicely with windwaker.
It all comes down to the design of the game, just because you can give your characters a more advanced AI, it doesn't mean your game will actually need it by definition.

multipayer5256d ago (Edited 5256d ago )

Twilight Princess didn't really mix up the formula at all though, and it really needs change, but the hardware hardly allows it... You know the next gen zelda would push like one thousand gannon troops on screen at once just for atmosphere. This isn't a budget game, but they are developing on budget hardware. *sigh* It's basically ruining gaming IMO.

SpoonyRedMage5256d ago

Why would they have thousands of troops? That isn't what Zelda is about, it's not a hack and slash game, it's an action/adventure game. Plus 1000 troops is possible on the Wii, Kingdom Hearts 2 had a 1 vs 1000 fight on the PS2, which is a lot weaker than the Wii.

What the Wii is contributing is brand new, unparallelled controls with the motion plus, it will be more immersive and they've already said they're going to be changing the structure of it and the Wii doesn't affect the ability of deveopers to make a different game.

evrfighter5256d ago

Yes OOT is 2 generations old. However the Zelda fanbase is growing up. I would estimate that a huge huge portion of zelda fans are over 18 years old.

When you take that into consideration. These gamers expect the next big Zelda release to be as big as how final fantasy fans are expecting ff13 to be.

The Wii will not make this possible. The most it will do is make it fun for 6 year olds. Complete with gimmicky wiimote swordfights and other mini games found in Hyrule.

Everything about a Zelda release on the Wii screams major gimmick.

I'm sure the hardcore Zelda fans would not want to see this happen.

multipayer5256d ago (Edited 5256d ago )

I'm just saying the big open fields in twilight princess left alot to be desired, even if you weren't fighting 1,000 it would have added alot to the atmosphere. I feel I havn't played an impressive zelda for awhile. Maybe the wii exclusive zelda will kick it up a notch, but considering how much detail of interaction you can even fit in 480p, I have my doubts.

ChickeyCantor5256d ago

" Maybe the wii exclusive zelda will kick it up a notch, but considering how much detail of interaction you can even fit in 480p"

And the 640P games that are on the PS3 and 360 are sh/t too right?

multipayer5256d ago (Edited 5256d ago )

You got that right, it sucks when not even PS3 or 360 can perform well enough to run games the way their developers intended. It is about physics aswell, the amount of objects that move in the pc versions and are simply nailed down for consoles kind of kills the immersion. That is proof that wii is struggling though. I'd expect full arm control with motion plus from the next zelda, which will be a HUGE change of pace, but the world it will take place in will probably remain the same or scaled back given the extra power it will take for that kind of technology.

So, we will have full arm control, but the level interaction will be exactly the same? I expect really linear levels to be honest.

ChickeyCantor5255d ago (Edited 5255d ago )

Linear?
Like zelda always have been?
Dont tell me you think the older zelda games weren't linear and now we are talking about the Wii it will be?

The Game is made to fit the Wii, its not made for the PC first and then down to the Wii. They aren't designing their game with specs higher than that of the Wii, so why cry it will pull down the franchise?

Non would have ever known what kind of a game it would have been if it were on the PS3 and 360.

Its like saying Sonic the hedgehog needs heavy physics and super AI, just because its on the PS3/360. while both things aren't needed with in the design of the game itself.

Games like Windwaker and Ocarina of time/Majoras mask, did awesomely great. Why assume anything less?

multipayer5255d ago

I'm saying I think it won't even have a HUD or villages and large open fields this time, maybe just a way of testing the waters and mega hype a zelda for Wii 2 with these controls...

Everything is really made with a PC and ported down if you ever look at Nintendo's concept art, or the emulated Twilight Princess that actually brings out the textures at a higher resolution. I have a comparison, but it is stored on my PS3, I'll send it to your ID if I don't forget.

Regardless, it'll be a great game for sure, but I want one of my favorite franchises to surpass all existing games in every aspect. Power and Prowess being very important these days.

ChickeyCantor5255d ago

you are kidding right?
This time around they said they want to utilize the overworld more than they wanted in TP , this alone says its going to be a bigger adventure.

Looking at how New super mario bros is,you cant say they will ever rape Zelda.

multipayer5255d ago

Rape.. Zelda? There are pics of that too. Nintendo doesn't really stick to any specific formula from what I've seen, last gen mario was a third person shooter and zelda is bound to become an FPS with these new controls. I'm thinking Mirror's Edge esc...

terrible article, according to this article the Conduit and Madworld are there best example of core gaming on the Wii? It seems most gamers forgot what "hardcore" means, it dosen't mean a generic sci-fi fps, a bloody beat-am-up, its titles like Muramasa, Little King, NSMBWii, Zelda, Puch-Out that are best examples of core games on the Wii. It seems the only way for a game to be "hardcore" these days is to have guns, blood, and a 6 hour campaign.

Redempteur5256d ago

After playing NEW super mario bros i don't think nintendo lost it's touch making good core games..

they just aren't exposed enough or ( for now ) not enough to outsell the number of thing happening on 360 or ps3

Still waiting for no more heroes 2 and the cristal bearers ...

pcz5256d ago

I don't like how the writer speaks for all wii users, i didn't buy a wii with the sole purpose of playing Zelda. In my opinion there is a degree of taking a leap of faith when you are an early adopter of any console, the success of a console doesn't rest on one title.

eagle215256d ago

Nothing new, that's just the gift and the curse of it's quality. The Wii has plenty of core games I want.

Shnazzyone5256d ago

I bought the wii because of the endless amount of retro appeal and genius update to video game controls. While I love the zelda franchise, it is a ridiculous leap of faith to say it's the only reason I want and continue to hold onto the wii. This guy should just shutdown this site... there really is only so much you can say about legend of zelda and articles like these prove he's running out of ideas and it's doomed to be an auctioned off .com before long.

Zelda Replay: Majora's Mask

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Is Ocarina of Time as legendary as I remembered it? For the most part, yes. In spite of a handful of missteps — a few obtuse puzzles, some tedious backtracking, and a clunky stealth sequence — I don't believe the last 23 years have been unkind to it. Ocarina remains a brilliant example of the medium, a landmark game that shaped the future of its own franchise and 3D gaming in general. After more than two decades it retains its inventive dungeon design, challenging puzzles, dynamic combat, wistful storyline, unforgettable music, and empowering open-air freedom. I feel confident calling it one of the greatest games of the fifth generation, even if I'm no longer prepared to list it among the five best games ever made."

Pure unadulterated fun. They don't make them like this anymore...especially not the triple A industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago

Back when video rental was a thing, I rented out Majoria's Mask, I never finished it though. I did buy the 3DS version before the eshop shutdown, so maybe one day I'll finally play through the whole thing, it's amazing how well these games hold up though. I briefly played Ocarina of Time for a while and it was really fun.

Honestly I really changed my mind on Fi with the remaster because they didn't make her interrupt your gameplay every 5 seconds, that drastically changed my views on her

Inverno87d ago

Technically she's in ToTK but obviously can't take any other form than the sword she was made into. Also the companion feature has been done plenty of times in Zelda, I don't think it'll add anything new. If anything should be brought back it should be the Minish.
