Eurogamer Portugal published a gameplay video from Dante's Inferno PS3 demo.

i have to admit the game is better than i expected, but Dante is so uninteresting, and im not even talking about cutscenes, i mean while playing, when u dismount one of the dudes to ride the big monster the only thing on my mind was "man, kratos wouldve done this so much better" but even though its basically a diabolic carbon copy, i liked it.

I thought the demo was ok. The gameplay felt a bit stiff to me and trying to be too much like GOW but in a boring way. I might get it when the price drops. Too many games I want in Q1 in 2010. (GOW3, White Knight Chronicles, FF13, Bioshock 2, Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, Yakuza 3)

Yeah I wish Dante's Inferno is executed better as a game, I love the design and the setting, but it ended up just to be another simple button masher. Personally I don't even like GoW's game play and was hoping Dante's would be more interesting/challenging like Ninja Gaiden/DMC. Guess I shouldn't have hoped for too much after all the vid indicate they are trying to make the gameplay just like GoW.

Still planning on getting the game on the basis of the beautiful and dark design, and story is pretty much gonna be guaranteed to be good.

Game play-wise I just now gotta hope GoW3 will step up their game and make the game play even better than before.

I am getting the Divine Edition for sure after the demo. The game may "borrow" many different aspects from GOW, however it does it better than most other GOW clones; something I think many of us can agree with. I'm pleasantly surprised by the demo- it became a "buy" instead of a "pass."

Curious- is anyone else excited about reading the actual novel on PS3? Joking aside, I sure as heck am :-p I was going to get Dante's Inferno for 360, on account of getting GOW 3 on PS3 in March, however the extras in the special edition are too good.

This game is a straight clone the riding of the beast was the last straw. There isnt much that it does fresh for itself BUT i enjoyed the demo and the setting..... Like many have mentioned above, i believe gow3 to be a more complete package. nice homage though

I agree, Dante was a very expressionate character in the book (well..narrator) usually shocked by what he sees.

Even though Kratos is hard core and rough, Dante should be a bit reluctant, taken-aback and slightly startled by what he sees, but i doubt they would do that as it would weaken him as a char, but tbh, there isn't much "character" here =/

NOW do people believe that it's a GOW ripoff? I played a different demo to this at the Eurogamer Expo, and I've gotta say, it definitely looks a lot better than it did back then.

I don't like that it plays exactly like GOW, except with slightly worse pacing. The character of Dante is also just not as interesting imo, Kratos sounds like a badass name, and Ghost of Sparta sounds even better. Even in his actions and voice acting there are major bad assery issues.

As I've said before, this game is like GOW + Ninja Gaiden, and now hopefully others see that too. I may or may not get this game (it looks great, but there are too many great games coming), but I will definitely be getting GOW3. I think most people (with a PS3) would probably say the same.

I'm more worried about the deluge of 3rd person action games coming after new year. I love these kind of games and there has been few good ones this year. Wolverine and NGs2 are the best I have played this year.

But next year we have Darksiders, Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno GoW3 and Castlevania to name the largest. And most of these come out in january, most likely to beat GoW3. It's the most established and successful ip of the lot, so it's not surprising.

But Darksiders, Bayonetta and Dante's Inferno will probably only cannibalize each other sales during this short period. Darksiders will probably be the biggest looser, depending on the reviews.

I will play all these games, but since they come out at almost the same time some will be purchased later, possibly after a price reduction.

That's what I hate. When I first saw Dante's Inferno at E3 I thought it would be amazing. The actual historic story is amazing and I thought making a game from it would be a great idea, but sadly it does look like a carbon copy of god of war. I was hoping for more, it had so much promise.

Agree, you can easily see the GoW influence. Althought that isn't necessarily a bad thing considering GoW 1 and 2 are some of the best action games available. I'll wait for the reviews but I would say based on the demo alone it's at least worth renting if nothing else. The graphics were awesome.

Okay so i was playing GOW collection while this was DL and as soon as i started this up, it felt pretty much the same, I mean i'm not even joking first level after the ship one it felt just like it, The barrier of fire the green and red vase (GOW chest) even the controls, But over all i liked it, i can say its a GOW game set in the Crusades time, rather greek mytholgy. I liked how the CGI looked like in this game, im going to be honest it looked real (that is untel the character poped up then u can tell it was fake), I hope this game has a great story im thinking of picking this up.

Judging from the demo this is a blatant (borderline illegal) copy of GOW. I don't mind being inspired by other games but comeon everthing in this game was copied, even the rolling wheel wehre you have to kill all the enemies to escape the wheel. Same controls, same combos, same upgrades, same hud, same sort of pacing, rage mode, quick time kills and everything else in between. Unfortunately it doesn't have the epic feel, the soul, the story, and the fluidity of GOW. I will pass.

You know if God of War wasn't an exclusive, a lot more people would be getting this game. Last time I checked, Dead Space is pretty much a rip-off of Resident Evil....just in space, and yet so many people loved that game. Why? Because it wasn't competing with an exclusive franchise. 360 fans are usually going to support Dante's Inferno, and PS3 fans are going to trash Dante's Inferno.

That is why Visceral Games released the demo earlier for PSN, and is selling that exclusive edition of the game on PS3. They are trying to get on the good side of PS3 fanboys. Smart move from them to be honest.

Dead Space is not a RE ripoff. The game was inspired by RE, but not a copy. Like someone said above, It is fine when a game is inspired by other games, but not when they copy every inch of it, and actually, Dead Space improved on everything RE did right, and got right everything RE has wrong.

The game being exclusive or not, doesn't have anything to do with success. 360 owners would praise the game because they don't have GOW, and PS3 owners would trash DI, because they took the best Hack and Slash game in history and did a CTRL+C CTRL+V thinking they would get away with it.

Dante's Inferno might be a great game, but it will never ever be as good and epic as GOW..

The Necromorphs is not zombies first of all, and second of all Dead Space did a hell of a better job of scarying people then Resident Evil ever did. It has Zero Gravity, the gameplay is different, and you have to dismember your enemies. In Resident Evil you can't do that. Dead Space is not a copy of Resident Evil, but I can't say the same for Dante's Inferno. I have to admit it is a copy of God of War. The moment you see Dante open the chests and the button sequence remind me way too much of God of War. The demo was great, but man its like playing Kratos in hell instead of Greek mythology. Judging by your comment, you probably never really experienced RE and DS in its entirety. RE comes no where close to the fear factor and immersion of DS. Having said that, if you could see the differences between RE & DS you would know that Dante is an obvious blatant copy of GoW, from the health/mana "chests", the QTEs, the moves "upgrade" scheme, the R1 magic usage. Heck it even got the boobies and the double jump platforming.

The demo was really intense. Killing Death (weird saying that lol) was brutal. Really easy to notice that its gameplay takes alot of inspiration from God of War. Which isn't a bad thing for this game, because it does it well. The only thing Visceral games have to worry about now is what Santa Monica Studios is adding on top of God of War 3, and after the event that HHG had gone to and giving us his impressions, who knows if it'll top GOWIII?. But enough of my comparisons between the two, Dante's Inferno is really a game I would purchase. Learning little of what's happening in the limited story offered from the demo was really interesting. You can really see Dante being ashamed and regretful for all the things he had done during the Crusade massacre. Now he has to save his loved one who has been taken to hell. Just damn, really cool. I'll get this to get me ready for GOWIII.

This isn't really my type of game but I did like it, the gfx are okay but the effects of moves and such is well done and the environments is a strong point...the after-demo trailer looked great and intriguing 'Go To Hell' hahah that cracked me up! The art direction really stood out to me as it will definitely be one of the high points of this title when venturing thru the 9 circles of Hell, there will be a lot of sights to take in no doubt. Even my 55yr old dad enjoyed the demo! He was more interested in it than I ever was, and he just couldn't wait to download the demo.

It's ripping off God of War too much and I see nothing here that God of War hasn't done and God of War did and does everything twice as better. Most games are inspired by other games these days, and they will take 1 or 2 things from other games and polish it up in their game, but they flat out copy almost everything from gow. Even that room where you fight off the enemies to open up that gate before that thing crushed you was in gow.

I see I'm not the only one not really impressed with the graphics. The fluid motion ta 60fps is nice, but the character models could use some work. The textures could be better. Assassin's Creed 2 has better graphics and considering all the stuff that game has on screen with multitudes of people in addition to the environment and textures on the building, this game could definitely have looked better.

I'm very impressed with this game, I didn't expect much, the graphics are very good for a multiplat; EA seems to be hitting their stride. The stories hard to follow but not bad, we don't see cg very much anymore, it's really cool they're using it a lot in this game- and the visuals don't seem out of place between cg and gameplay. They really like to use the nudity(boobs) in this one EA seems to be doing that with all their games now. It is clear they use a lot of the same systems GOW uses, the green life and life chest look like they should be in a GOW game. Along with the button timing finishes.
It does rip off GOW, clearly big time, but it's still a good game by itself.

On a side note this game would be really really awesome if it had co op, why don't we see those kind of games at this level of quality anymore...? It would be a perfect golden axe.

So just now i played DI,yes its alot like GOW games but its not a bad game,the combat its not so fluid like on GOW3 demo and the graphics can't compare to GOW3 demo,there is a scene where u fight outside ur house and they look like a PS2 game,in general they are nice but not impressive

Just played the demo,

Liked: the art direction, cg cutscenes. the controls and gameplay are a god of war ripoff no doubt, but it also made it easy to pick up, with minimal learning curve for anyone who is familiar with gow.

Disliked:
the cartoon/comic drawings, some of the enemy designs felt a bit generic.

Final thoughts: The concept art i saw around e3 was very impressive. i feel like the game is going to lack the depth of the concept art. i'll have to check it out when it drops to fully judge the game. probably a rental.

The first thing I noticed is that the textures in DI just don't hold a candle to what I saw in the GoW3 demo. I mean, the graphics aren't bad, but they just don't have the polish of GoW.

Dead Space is not an RE rip off. it was very unique and it scared the crap out of you, something that survival horror fans wanted for a long time.

now as for DI, it is a GOW clone to the ultimate. i knew it from the point it showed me the controls. now is it a good clone? hell yea! EA\Visceral is doing a good job out of it. better than i expected (yes i know insert POPE jokes lol).

but mainly because i was so amused by how blatantly it pays "homage" to the God of War series.

to me, if you are going to copy somebody, at least copy the best.

i played the Bayonetta demo today also for the first time, and i have to say it left me underwhelmed. besides the gratuitous and uncomfortable levels of T&A, the game just wasn't that great. it was like it was programmed with a "win" button.

Dante's Inferno on the other hand, was rather enjoyable, although i wish they had gone with a more distinct control scheme. outside of blocking, the entire control scheme is God of War, from dodging, to heavy attacks, to light attacks, to interacting with doors and health and mana fountains.

that's not a knock against the game however, and the demo actually sold me on the game, whereas before, i wasn't even going to buy it.

i'll be getting both Dante's Inferno and God of War 3 when they release.

i have the GoW3 demo also, and Dante doesn't hold a candle to Kratos in terms of character and presentation, but it was fun.

for PS3 owners and GoW fans, i'd definitely recommend the Dante's Inferno demo. i know a lot of people will dismiss it because it's multi-plat, but at least EA has been creating new IP this generation.

besides, Dante is being made by Visceral Games, the Dead Space guys, and we know how quality Dead Space was on all platforms.

since Action/Adventure games are my favorite genre outside of RPGs, i welcome more additions to the genre beyond just God of War, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry.

i'm willing to give Bayonetta more time, but it just didn't grab me. i feel like it was specifically made to target me when i was 15 years old and full of raging hormones. i play it now that i'm 30, and i feel awkward, and not in the good way. my wife was oddly amused by Bayonetta's odd proportions also.

Wow glad I'm not alone on this. For some reason, the music, the concept, the art direction, the whole getting naked thing while attacking was just too much cheese for me. I enjoy a hot naked lady on my TV screen like the next guy, but for some reason this game's over the top nature really didn't click with me. I'm 25 btw.

LOL, yes, it seems as the years go by. Ones taste somewhat change with that. I still stick with my fantasy adventures, demons, dragons and Metal Gear type games myself. Not to big on War FPS, cheesy immature level types so much anymore. Recently I've been playing UC2's online looking to max the online levels before moving to the next game. I'm 6 a way from that. Dante's Inferno OR Bayonetta.

i enjoyed some of the over the top stuff in Bayonetta, but the gratuitous cheesecake just made me feel really kind of silly. i usually don't feel embarrassed when playing video games (i mean, i love Flower for Christ's sake, and i play the hell out of that game in front of anybody; it's too unique and amazing to not show off to guests), but Bayonetta was just so over the top it was absurd. it's not like Lara Croft, who has a more subdued sensuality, Bayonetta was just blatantly designed for oversexed teenage Otakus. her body proportions are too absurd to be sexy to me.

and Dante's Inferno was a lot of fun. i wish it was out now, instead of coming out a few weeks before God of War 3, but i'll certainly see about picking it up.

i was really intrigued by the Holy/Unholy power upgrade tree. it seems like their may be more than one ending depending on how you upgrade your abilities.

i'm torn about the animated cutscenes. despite being a comic artist myself, i don't really think the pseudo Mike Mignola animation gelled with the rest of the game's art design.

the graphics don't come anywhere NEAR matching the graphics in the God of War demo (the muscles in Krato's knee joins bend and stretch while he moves; now THAT'S attention to detail), but they were sharp and crisp, and certainly not ugly.

ultimately, they won a customer with the demo. like i said before, i was simply ready to ignore Dante's Inferno, because most copy-cats aren't even anywhere in the same ballpark as what they are copying (see the many poor GTA clones out there, oddly enough, most of them from Activision), and while Dante's Inferno is still more like the bastard cousin of God of War, it's the bastard cousin that you still have a lot of fun with when he comes over. lol.

The Good:

certain visual effects are nice, cross "blasts" and whatnot; the framerate was solid and the gameplay is fun. The "Beast" thing looked much better than the other enemy models and it was animated well. Interesting use of source material, it's a bit obvious at times, but they adapted it well (Judas Coins...! :) smiley)

The Bad:

ugly textures, flat environments (especially stone), papery 2d flame effects (very PS2, or Call of Duty: MW2 if you like!), mostly ugly character models, odd choice for voice actor to play the Reaper dude. Though it was only the beginning and I know the real deal is when Dante gets to hell (I've seen all the diaries and there really are some cool levels further in), the environments were simply boring as, well, hell.

Overall I think it will be a fun game, the crazy demons and stuff will be where this game shines, but the rest is pretty lackluster WITHOUT even comparing it to GoW III.

this game will be incredibly magnificent! Alright, given that it seems like it is Kratos under that armor with a little slimmer look (even the way he runs looks like him), but overall the experience was amazing. I found that the beast controlling feature in Dante's Inferno (coincidence) was much more appealing than in GOW-III demo, providing that was the full gist of it: maybe they've made changes since the E3 demo (I hope).

There was only one minor annoyance though, the button-sequences got a bit confusing. They need to change the look of the icon that appears above the screen or at least that white back ground behind the button-map. It was not easy to distinguish between "Square" and "Circle" buttons in the heat of the battle and I can only assume the battles are going to get tougher so we'd need better layout than that because we can't spare to look at it for a good while.

Dante's graphics arent great , they are ok but seems to lack some sort of polish . I know it's not true given some details and giant structure and creature i've seen in trailers , but judging on the demo , it looks a bit as if they took god of war psp or ps2 and made it hd , only a little step further than the gow 1-2 re-release .

It still looks good mind you (except for the awfully design hero) and very inspired , but lacking .

The rest of the game is good obviously , but then again the original copy was , they would have some nerves to f*ck it up .

So far my only gripes are :

some of the animations . It seems as if they flash forward x2 gow's animation to mix some gow and dmc , and it looks off ... while still good .

dante's design . As actually a fan of the book and the whole Divine Comedy , i felt it deserved a better treatment than some muscular moron proving that he is indeed a moron by sewing a cross on his bare chest .

The original Dante Alighieri sure might have not fit videogames standards , even if he did fought a war ... especially i you're dead set on aping Kratos and conan in the worst way possible but still something could have been done design wise getting inspired by his original renaissance look :

That's all well a great but... I seem to remember how Heavenly Sword, a 1st gen PS3 exclusive was labeled a GoW clone (which it was absolutely not) and presented a way better and more innovative gaming experience than DI.

When considering relative time frames, Heavenly Sword out does DI in virtually every department from graphics, voice acting, gameplay and general presentation. So tell me, how come HS was treated so harshly and call a GoW wannabe and given 7.9s cause "it was too short" an excuse which was total BS cause many games like Halo, gears etc have had even shorter SP campaigns and not editorial reviewer even mentions these as a flaw and these are 3rd&4th gen established titles.

The gaming community is filled with S* heads. Why didn't you support HS, which is a better gaming experience to DI back then? Yes, cause it was a PS3 exclusive and every PS3 exclusive has to be held to insane standards before it can be considered for 8.9 talk less of 9s.

I didnt care then and enjoyed a rather awesome action game , and it plays inded better or as least well as DI so far , while having it's own style .

However i disagree with the idea that it plays better than Bayo . Again even if Bayo was "ONLY" a dmc clone , it's hardly a bad thing .

Gow/Hs/Di's gameplay can't touch DMC/bayo and it's amount of possibilities . I often hear the term button mashing throw at dmc/bayo ... but you certainly mash much more in gow/di . When you dont you're in many QTE . And you can easily beat the game with a small set of moves .

What set gow truly apart is it's epic atmosphere , story and realisation and of course level of polish . In contrast DMC/byao only got a more complex gameplay system and focus on style , but who cares or remember their plot ? .

But when someone playing gow 3's demo act as if it's infinitely better , when it's more of the same until further info , i'm laughing inside . it's obviously a great game already but stop exagerating .

bottom line there are more than enough rooms for both dmc's and gow's specific genre of gameplay , and HS rocked

Good rant. I tried telling people HS was great back then. Unfortunately, the die-hard PS fanboys were the only ones to really embrace it. Aside from them, everyone brushed it off as a GoW clone, ESPECIALLY the gaming media. "Female Kratos" was a term I heard a lot back then. I think the only real similarity was the fact that you used light and strong attacks. Nariko didn't even have a jump function, so I failed to see her as a female Kratos.

Ive played the demo several times and I have really enjoyed it. It definitely feels a lot like GOW though. However that isnt such a bad thing considering how good it plays and looks. Ill be buying the GOW 3 Ultimate Edition in March but I also plan on buying Dante's Inferno. After all there is more than enough room on my shelf for both games.

God of War with a Diablo mod. It is like Kratos went to hell or something. I still had fun with the demo, but they so far failed with making me connect with the character at all. Maybe the full game will offer more to make up for that.

The only thing I have to say about Beastmaster part is that either A) I had an insane amount of life on the demo, or B) the Beast is wayyy too powerful when you are riding him. Before I took control of the beast, I was hit a few times... not taking much damage at all. Now when I was riding the beast, I killed enemies in 1 hit? It made no sense, but it was to my advantage, so I didn't care much, I just noticed a huge inconsistency there, and it is a demo, so maybe they will fix that.

Edit: @ DragonPrince - It is such a blatant copy, I will be surprised if they are not sued later. Even the HEALTH is GREEN!!! They couldn't even switch up the COLORS?!?! At least the magic is purple instead of Blue. But I was almost relieved when I saw the first health station and it was a fountain instead of the chest that God of War has. But when I got to it, why did I need to break it by pressing "O" a bunch of times the same way Kratos opens a chest? I laughed out LOUD so hard @ the people not calling this a clone.

I had fun with the game, but I am afraid that a lawsuit may pop up from this kinda copy and likeness. The crazy thing is, it really wasn't necessary. They coulda changed the heath fountain color to red or orange, but nope, they kept it green to appeal to God of War fans(I guess), so this could be that "inbetween" game before God of War 3. But it is a shameless copy to the point, that God of War fans may feel a bit uncomfortable, it is like you are cheating. lol

I am glad that I am not the only one who felt uncomfortable playing this game because of "too much" likeness. It did not help that I just finished playing God of War 2 earlier this week, that really tainted the Dante experience for me... cause I was like "Didn't I just finish playing this game, except it wasn't in hell it was at Mount Olympus?"

At least Darksiders, Bayonetta, NGS2, etc. all have distinct differences.

I really tried to like it. And to some extent I did. I gotta say the magic attacks and the cross attacks were a lot of fun to use. Everything else sort of felt like.. Ninja Gaiden or GoW. I even noticed that they used the same sort of cutscenes in Dante's Inferno as GoW. The panning and zooming cutouts, presented like a live action illustration. Very GoW-ish.

The health and mana fonts were something straight out of GoW. The way they're used is almost identical. I won't be the one praising God of War as the greatest game ever or anything like that, but there's certainly too many similarities between the two games.

In closing... I don't know what to really think about Dante's Inferno. The circle attacks and magic was cool. Aside from that, I felt like I played the game before.

The biggest problem I have is how Dante fights. Why is a knight in heavy armor moving as fast as a mythic ninja? He is too damn fast. It is a nice style of combat. Loved it in NG2, but it doesn't make sense in this one.

This is supposed GOD of WAR 3 is supposed to be the last GoW in the series. EA assumes this, and knows that there will be a seat available for a similar gameplay experience. think of Dante's Inferno as the first installment in a trilogy. they are trying to beat sony to a spiritual sucessor to GoW. It's not a dumb thing to do. The game looks good, and if they make a huge jump from this one to the next, like Dice with battlefield we're all instore for something very good. This game is pretty good in most areas, and can use some more iteratons to be something special. Which we are almost certain to see.

i actually really enjoyed the demo but a few problems with it...

- the graphics seem really bland, especially in comparison to the really nice CGI cutscenes.

- the story seems interesting but made no sense what so ever lol (hopefully this is cus levels in the demo were stuck together and bits were left out to avoid spoiling the story.
