I don't necessarily disgaree with Nintendo's choice of using cartridges for the N64. Would Goldeneye 007 have got its 10 million sales if it was on a standard CD and easy to pirate? No doubt N64 games had a particular look- blocky, jerky and lacking texture but it also seemed to bring out the best in game design from Rare e.g. Banjo Kazooie - it was a comedown in some respects from the beautiful 2D visuals of Donkey Kong Country but that was true about most games that weren't on the Dreamcast.
(I also respected Nintendo for shunning standard CDs with the Gamecube and using smaller proprietary discs. Not only were they undeniably cuter looking but the the likes of the Resident Evil remake showed that the Gamecube could do a lot of detail and display great lighting effects).
