Top 5 Games of 2009 that Could Have Sucked...But Didn't

"Each year, there are certain video games that players just know will be awesome. For instance, months before games like Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2 or even original properties like Dragon Age: Origins, hit shelves, everything from their gameplay trailers to their developer's pedigree suggested that those games would be instant hits.

On the other hand, there are video games that look like they're not going to be any good. Maybe it's because the developers aren't exactly renowned for making quality titles, or maybe it's just because the graphics don't look up to par. Maybe the gameplay appears to be bland and derivative. For whatever reasons, these games looked simply unappealing.

Early impressions, though, can be entirely wrong, as the following five titles clearly indicate. Despite not looking particularly stellar at first, these video games defied all expectations by being pretty awesome instead of being terribly mediocre. "

Call me a hater if you want, but I totally thought Killzone 2 was going to suck like Haze.

Was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.

Ah . . . Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood kinda sucked. O_o

Hellsvacancy5265d ago (Edited 5265d ago )

I didnt like Batman or Call Of Juarez, im entitled 2 my opinion as i bought and completed (then soon sold) them both

joydestroy5265d ago

i def thought NFS Shift was gonna be crap but i was surprised with that one. great racer.

rockleex5265d ago (Edited 5265d ago )

Come on.

EVERYONE expected From Software to fail once again.

The graphics were average, although much better than Dragon Age Origins and somewhat better than Oblivion. The environments and surroundings looked grim and depressing.

The animations didn't leave a good impression on the combat system.

Guess what, Demon's Souls turns out to have one of the best combat systems ever in action RPGs.

The enemies required tactical approaches in order to be defeated. Even the maps/levels forced you to watch your step at every moment. The customization for your weapons were ridiculous(in a good way). The souls system forced you to be scared of death.

Words can not describe the kind of experience you get from this game. O_O

I was pretty much the same way, i played Killzone1 a few times before Kz2 was released and i hated it. Then comes Killzone 2 and i thought it was something special and wasnt like all the other generic shooters.

everyone was suprised by killzone 2

Saaking5265d ago

The only people who thought KZ2 would suck are the anit-Sony morons. Other than that, it was clear the game would be amazing.

I had a blast with Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood.
It's a beautiful looking game, as well.

I'm playing Batman right now (about 4 hours into it) and I'm not quite digging it as much as everyone else.
I think it's a very solid game, just not the "9" or "10" that a lot of people say it is.

I actually expected Killzone 2 to be awesome (it was the main reason I bought my PS3) but the horrible controls killed the game for me.

as opposed to a game that could have been good but sucked.
MW2

tehk1w15265d ago

Aw snap.

But yeah. MW2 could have been epic. Instead, it turned out to be a series of cool scenes thinly connected by a terrible story.

No Russian was supposed to be OMGWTF. Instead it was kind of like "Why the hell am I even here?"

StanLee5265d ago

Can anyone tell me how and why in the middle of Modern Warfare 2, the game's main antagonists becomes Shepherd rather than Makarov and what the hell happened to Makarov? Seriously, MW2 single player blows.

Pennywise5265d ago

MW2 has revolutionized the glitching genre... What chu talkin bout Willis?

ico925265d ago

MW2 is the 1st game i've ever played where i felt the single player was tacked on ..i mean wow its usually the other way round

evrfighter5265d ago

MW2 single-player was a result of a bunch of dudes getting drunk and saying

"Lets make a list of the greatest action movies ever and lets put the coolest scenes in our game...who cares if we can't tie it all together, it'll sell either way"

A list Uncharted 2 can't win because failure is never an option.

I'd personally add Battlefield 1943 to that list it could have sucked IF

It was the PC version where I'd spawn and some pro would swoop it at a million miles an hour in a plane flip eject, no scope and land back in the plane as it does the roll and them bomb me as I respawn.

ZombieAutopsy5265d ago

all i can say is what the f@ck how did he do that.

mrv3215265d ago

He makes Grizz look ALMOST average. That was crazy, I could never do that.

tehk1w15265d ago

I finally got around to playing Uncharted 2.

I've changed my pants three times. Words can not describe how fun that game is.

DuneBuggy5265d ago

I would have added Ghostbusters to the list. Basically for the same reason they gave for Batman. Movie games tend to suck too.
I was cautiously optomistic though and enjoyed Ghostbusters myself.

iceman065265d ago

It was refreshing in it's gameplay...plus the script actually took me back to when Ghostbusters was the hit summer movie. Theme song was EVERYWHERE...from MTV to the mall arcades. Those were good days!!!*L*

bjornbear5265d ago

I thought infamous was going to suck when I first saw it...then when i took a closer look I got blown away, and when I played it, it became one of my top games ever =)

Pleasant Surprise =D
