IncGamers - MMO Weekly: Why Guild Wars 2 Will Rock

IncGamers' Jeff Hollis discusses Guild Wars, it's downfalls and why Guild War 2 will make its own mark.

"The problem with GW is that it has committed two mortal, deadly sins. The first of its major sins was that it launched within six months of another huge, successful MMO - in this case, World of Warcraft. GW dropped off the radar because WoW was simply so big and successful at that time."

More diversity in the MMO market is very welcome!

ChrisW5263d ago

As long as there are also no monthly fees, such diversity will be welcomed!

Haven't played in a while. The best part is PvP for sure. In my opinion it is way more in depth and engaging than WoW. I think the only thing that I didn't like about it was that only Rangers could have pets. That's lame.

Dorjan5263d ago

GW2 trailers all look boring thus far

Malfurion5263d ago

You obvioulsy didn't see the last one :P

Leord5263d ago

Really? I thought they were quite nice...

SuperStrokey11235263d ago

Is that a joke? Cause so far they have been pretty freaking epic.

Fyzzu5263d ago

Guild Wars 2 is looking very, very nice, but I'm still a bit wary. I had problems with some of the core concepts of the first game, and never got into it that deeply.

Leord5263d ago

I disagree. It's a little Diabloesque, but more PvP, very cool.

Maticus5263d ago

I'd agree and disagree with that statement above. It was a free game, compared to WoW's subscription one. It was also prettier than WoW (in some people's opinions). I played it when it launched, but moved to WoW because everyone I knew played that - I think that's the same story the world over :)

Leord5263d ago

Tsue, but in essence, I think Mr Hollis is right. Another timing there had been very beneficial. Also, now everyone knows about WoW, and I think many are prepared to try something new :)

It wasnt a matter of timing at all . GW did as much as a game that actually wasnt a MMO at all , and basically a team pvp focused diablo could .

I dont like this rewriting of history ... the game had a stellar launch and stellar sales with almost imedialtely a million worldwide . And no it wasnt a low and moderate success in the west . the original game : Gw Prophecies remained numbers one in all pc charts for at least 6 weeks , and remained in the top 10 for the rest of 2005 .

When it"s first expansion , faction arrived , the game was way over 2 million players ... and each addon sold pretty much as well .

By february 2008 GW had sold more than 5 millions worldwide . Looking back all those years , GW was each time doing around half WoW's numbers . Wich is a very impressive feat .

I played Guild Wars more than I played WoW. I never fell into the hype of WoW I always thought it wasn't that great of MMO. I did however like how Guild Wars was done. It just made it easier to drop in and out of the game when I had little time to play. With games like WoW and Everquest they made it very difficult to play when you were strapped for time. I am hoping Guild Wars 2 keeps that so I can enjoy it.

Baka-akaB5263d ago (Edited 5263d ago )

i see such change as inevitable . I have utmost confidence in Arena , however with the game becomeing a true mmo , and with the market's standards such as EQ2 , LOTR , WAR ,AIon and last but not least WoW , i see GW aping them , in their own style and uniques features , but still ultimately loosing part of the first game while gaining something extra .

Wich is why GW2 wont please every GW1 players imo . And why GW1 will remains very active in the years to come , much like diablo .

Gw2 will probably loose a portion of the original base not looking for persistant adventures and pvp wars , but gain support from those other MMOs players .

Hell i wouldnt be surprised if GW still get one or two more expansion pack after gw2's release .

very much so... "blank" is still a thing" is also still a thing as you can can surmise.

Anet also announced the 5th expansion. "We’ve already started applying lessons from the development of Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure to our fifth expansion, which we expect to be released next year." From their site, been with this game since 1st beta, and announcing the 5th expansion so soon, the game is doing very well, plus the graphics are improved a bit now that it's on DX11🙃

TGG_overlord252d ago

Correct, and yes. Imo, they've done very well for themselves, and I'm very impressed with what they have achived with GW2 since the game launched.
