Dragon Age: Origins - ZTGD Review (PS3/360)

The Wombat writes: On their journey towards becoming a household name in the gaming community, Bioware cut their teeth and built a sizable fan base by developing fantastic PC RPG's like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights. Over the years while they've been busy growing the company and wowing people with everything from Sci-Fi masterpieces like KOTOR and Mass Effect to Chinese legends in Jade Empire, many fans have been clamoring for a return to classic D&D style high fantasy. Thankfully, Bioware has answered the call with Dragon Age: Origins, a brilliant fantasy adventure in a brand new universe that manages to feel both fresh and familiar.

I've finished one playthrough and had to take a break from it.

I'm sure I'll play through it a couple of more times at least...

ThanatosDMC5278d ago (Edited 5278d ago )

My first playthrough and i havent finished it and im at 58 hours. I like to be thorough. I'm an city elf rogue. I'll probably try to be a dwarf warrior next time. Then a human mage later. I need to have a female character to sleep with Alister to get the trophy.

Why cant we have "relations" with all the companions? I know, obvious...

legendkilla5277d ago

It took me 35 hours too play through the first time. I didn't do many of the side quest's. I'm about 15 hours into my next character

Jamescagney5278d ago

I've taken a break for a few days, I just wasn't getting things done. Bloody addictive game.

artsaber5278d ago (Edited 5278d ago )

I think it has terrible graphics. It looks like Champions of Norrath for the PS2. No offense, but after playing Demon Souls, this game is a bit hard on the eyes. I rented this game and took it back the next day.

Maybe I will pick it up again in the future when I am bored.

Jamescagney5278d ago

Maybe you won't, biggest question though is 'Who cares?'

funkycoldmedina5278d ago

@artsaber - I agree the graphics are very inconsistent and very noticeable on HDTV. Sometimes it looks good, but never great and other times just looks washed out and low quality like PS2 games. Sometimes it doesn't even look as good as FFX on PS2 (SDTV) from what I can remember of that game, which also had a female mage character Morrigan some what resembles. Noticeable frame-rate drop during screen filled battle effects and a lot of clipping or pop ups. The graphics can be a big turn off after playing UC2, KZ2, NGS series, Bayonetta demo, etc. on current consoles, but if you can get past it DA is quite fun.

I like the game quite much but I don't know about all these 9/10 scores. There are a lot of noticeable technical flaws that other games get docked for. A lot of dialogue cutscenes that can't be skipped and have to sit through again if you want a different outcome to certain events or activities. Being a City Elf ain't easy. lol

chrisulloa5278d ago

This game is much better than Demon Soul's, believe me. Also, if you're worrying about graphics on an RPG game you need to stop playing RPG's all together. Plus, if you have a good computer you can max out the settings and it blows Demon Soul's away.

Ravage275277d ago

to adjust to the gfx, that's is why i always play UC2 mp after playing some DragonAge, and never before :p

Bolts5277d ago

Demon Soul is nothing more than an Asian GRIND FEST featuring a difficulty curve that consists of losing all of your experience and gold (called souls in this game) when you die twice in a roll. But thats not a deal breaker for me yet until I found that I had to grind levels that I previously completed again and again, AGAIN in order to advance. After that I quickly kicked this Japanese turd to the curve. This kind of "gameplay" belongs in 1991 not in 2009.

To further compound the boredom the levels that you're expected to repeat a billion times for souls due to death or grind are not randomly generated. All the enemies are the same place doing the same boring crap.

and i give it a 100 out of 10

Nihilism5278d ago

I've put over 100 hours into 2 playthroughs and I would rate it an 8/10, fallout 3 for me was a 9-10/10

How'd fallout not make the list. Atleast over cyberpunk, tales , and halo. Fallout been around since what 96 98 and has 5 6 games into it. It's full of lore when you play it. I'd even add star ocean to a point.

robtion502d ago

Agree Fallout should be on there.

MadLad502d ago

And somehow Planescape Torment doesn't even make the list.

Crows90502d ago

Hollow knight surpasses these.

shinoff2183502d ago

In lore? I must be missing something

Crows90502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

Yes in lore. Easily missed... absolutely. Never played a game that had me loving the world and lore behind it as much as that one. Most of course wouldn't be able to experience it since it is a more difficult game.

DarXyde502d ago

I can't speak for all titles on this list, but by the time you get to Dark Souls III, the lore is a bloody tapestry of intricacy

Crows90502d ago

Played them all. Im not saying the games on the list dont have good lore...I just think hollow knight had more lore that is hidden but present and more easily explored and accessed. The souls games have tremendous lore but theyre mostly hidden and stay that way unless you look for it and research it. The lore is not very accessible.

DarXyde502d ago

Crows90,

I think that's a somewhat fair assessment. For me, the Souls games are less upfront about the lore, but it does invite your fascination through NPCs, items, locations, bosses, etc. There's this kind of natural progression where the picture becomes just clear enough by doing the essential tasks, but it really makes you want to explore every inch of the world.

TheColbertinator502d ago

Suikoden and Legend of Heroes also have massive lore setups.

agent13502d ago

narration is more important than lore i'd rather watch the story and characters in a more cinematic way instead of searching for notes and stuff that's why i love sony exclusive games like uncharted and gow and hate from software games

shinoff2183502d ago

The article was top ten lore in video games. I think they did a bad job picking games out. I know what you mean though. I just like a variety of games and genres.
